Dissertation Defense: Inquiring Further: Essays on Epistemic Normativity (May 31, 2022 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/94782 94782-21767868@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, May 31, 2022 9:30am

ABSTRACT:
My dissertation defends the importance of epistemic norms on what I call ‘inquiring further.’ Inquiring further is a familiar practice we all engage in when we redeliberate, gather more evidence, or double-check our beliefs. Nonetheless, many philosophers have argued that norms governing when we should gather evidence or reinquire are at most practical or moral norms. Against this, I argue that norms on inquiring further are central to our conception of responsible epistemic agency. I do this by appealing to both the roles of epistemic evaluations and our practices of holding agents epistemically accountable. My dissertation thereby expands and enriches our understanding of epistemic evaluations and normativity.

Dissertation Defense: Symmetry and Reformulation: On Intellectual Progress in Science and Math (June 3, 2022 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/94783 94783-21767869@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, June 3, 2022 1:00pm

Elvang, Henriette (cognate, Physics)

ABSTRACT:
Scientists and mathematicians routinely make progress by reformulating their problem-solving plans. Whereas many philosophers focus on competing theories, methodologies, or foundations, I focus on what I call "compatible formulations." In these cases, different problem-solving plans peacefully coexist, mutually illuminating their subject matter. My dissertation defends an account of the nature and value of compatible formulations. I argue that reformulations often provide a kind of objective, non-practical, epistemic value, which I call "intellectual significance." Meeting the constitutive aims of science and mathematics requires reformulating.

Of course, not all reformulations are intellectually significant: some are trivial notational variants. To distinguish trivial from significant reformulations, I consider four different accounts of the value of reformulating, based on instrumental, intellectual, explanatory, and metaphysical value. According to what I call "conceptualism," reformulations are significant when they provide an epistemically distinct plan for solving problems. The intellectual value of reformulating does not require corresponding explanatory or metaphysical differences, and it goes beyond practical or instrumental value. To avoid more weighty commitments, I provide expressivist accounts of (i) what it means for one formulation to provide better understanding than another and (ii) what it means for one formulation to be more fundamental. Finally, I analyze what it means for a formulation to make a property manifest or perspicuous, e.g. by "wearing it on the sleeves."

Nobel Prize laureate Toni Morrison's "Recitatif: A Story" is a beautifully crafted, arresting piece about a multi-decade relationship between two women, whose races are never identified. Her only published short story, Morrison wrote it was "an experiment in the removal of all racial codes from a narrative about two characters of different races for whom racial identity is crucial." A free PDF copy of this very brief work (20 pages) is available online for download here: https://www.cusd80.com/cms/lib/AZ01001175/Centricity/Domain/1073/Morrison_recitatifessay.doc.pdf

In-Person Saturday Sampler Tour | Digging into the Meaning of "Archaeology" (June 25, 2022 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/94337 94337-21734388@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, June 25, 2022 2:00pm
Location: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

Movies and TV often show archaeologists searching for mummies and huge golden artifacts. But is that what archaeology is really all about? Have you ever wondered how real-life archaeologists learn about the lives of ancient people? Or what a “museum of archaeology" is, anyway?

In this tour, we explore how archaeologists use ancient artifacts such as writing tablets, foods, and household goods—in combination with their contexts—to better understand the lives of people in the ancient world.

Masks are optional inside the Kelsey Museum. For more information about our COVID procedures and how to prepare for your visit, please visit our website, https://myumi.ch/9PG1P.

Saturday Sampler tours are free and open to all visitors. If you are a person with a disability who requires accommodation to attend this tour, please contact the education office (734-647-4167 or kelsey.ed@umich.edu) at least two weeks in advance. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

Inspired by Nature: 20 Years of Art by Hava Gurevich
Hava Gurevich’s canvases pulsate with life. Bright colors and botanical motifs dance and tangle in abstract environments that bear resemblance to microscopic scans of cellular structures. “I am inspired by the elegant intricacy of patterns in nature that repeat on both small and large scales across a variety of lifeforms, from single cell amoebas to entire ecosystems.” The creative process for these works begins with drawing and photography. Images of daily encounters with nature and sketches of textures and details morph into lines, shapes and colors in acrylic paint. Patterns are abstracted and undulate across the canvas, forming the foundation of Gurevich’s visual language. Images from the imagination blend with botanical elements in vivid color combinations. These works capture the dynamics of nature and the constant state of growth and decay; the passage of death and the birth of new life.

These works capture the dynamics of nature and the constant state of growth and decay; the passage of death and the birth of new life.

In this tour we explore some of the early U-M excavation sites that were personally chosen by Professor Francis Kelsey. Why were these sites chosen? What did we find there? How did they contribute to the field of archaeology and our understanding of daily life in the ancient world? Join us at the Kelsey to learn the answers.

Masks are optional inside the Kelsey.

On display, free to public from July 2 through September 11th at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48105

Powered by the U-M Sustainable Food Program (UMSFP) and the Campus Farm at Matthaei Botanical Gardens (CF), this project seeks to increase access to local food for students and engage the wider U-M community in food systems learning and engagement opportunities. Students will receive a 30% discount and the proceeds from the Farm Stand go towards funding student-led sustainable food initiatives here at the U-M through UMSFP’s mini-grants for food justice program. Follow @umfarmstand on Instagram to up-to-date announcements and weekly product availability.

On display, free to public from July 2 through September 11th at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48105

The Farm Stand is a weekly pop-up market and education project that sells produce grown by students for students. It’s held from July through October on State St outside of the U-M Museum of Art.

On display, free to public from July 2 through September 11th at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48105

Join us for an afternoon of special drop-in programming about rivers and watersheds. Dip your hands into our 10-foot stream table and contribute to a collaborative art activity as we learn how rivers form and what it takes to keep these vital parts of our environment healthy. How does pollution spread? How do we limit erosion? How do different forms of settlement and land use affect a river? Build a river and watch what happens during a flood.

Free, no registration required. Recommended age: 5 and up.

This event is offered in partnership with the University of Michigan Museum of Art and the Watershed exhibition. In Watershed, fifteen contemporary artists explore the interconnected histories, present lives, and imagined futures of the Great Lakes region. On view June 4th to October 23rd in the A. Alfred Taubman Gallery I at UMMA.

On display, free to public from July 2 through September 11th at Matthaei Botanical Gardens. 1800 N. Dixboro Rd. Ann Arbor, MI 48105

Patterns are abstracted and undulate across the canvas, forming the foundation of Gurevich’s visual language. Images from the imagination blend with botanical elements in vivid color combinations. These works capture the dynamics of nature and the constant state of growth and decay; the passage of death and the birth of new life.

Making Sense of Mechanisms: Studies on Learning Organic Chemistry (September 8, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/95970 95970-21791508@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 8, 2022 4:00pm

Organized By: Department of Chemistry

Learning is a difficult, multidimensional process; educators have a responsibility to be aware of our students’ learning progress and respond to that awareness in ways that further promote learning. For the Raker Research Group, we are focused on understanding how novices develop and use the language of organic chemistry, i.e. how learners come to make sense of reaction mechanisms. This broader outcome for our course requires the activation and integration of multiple concepts and skills that have been shown to be difficult for learners. The focus of our work is on foundational concepts including acidity and basicity, and nucleophiles and electrophiles in the context of studying how learners make sense of mechanisms. We develop rubrics to measure learning and evaluate instruction, and construct learning experiences that supplement and complement instruction. We have been successful in using our rubrics to develop computer-based scoring models to evaluate 20,000+ written reaction mechanism explanations across the undergraduate organic chemistry curriculum. For our Lewis acid–base scoring model, we have demonstrated that the model can be deployed in adaptative tutorials to provide and promote targeted learning. While our work has specifically focused on organic chemistry, implications of our work extend to all areas of chemistry: to provide meaningful learning experiences for our students, we must have good tools to measure learning and work to create experiences that better and best promote that learning. Thus, molecular orbital diagrams in inorganic chemistry, phase diagrams in physical chemistry, or enzyme-substrate kinetics in biochemistry, for example, all provide contexts in our courses for reflecting on and responding to learning that requires integration of concepts and skills similar to how we do chemistry.
