Join Black and Pink at SPH on Tuesday, September 26, from 6:30-8:00 pm at Neutral Zone in Ann Arbor for an evening of learning about what can exist beyond policing and prisons. We’ll kick off the event with a screening of the film collection, Beyond Walls. This series of short films examines prison abolition from a range of perspectives to inspire viewers to imagine and take action toward investing in community and not punitive practices. Following the films, a panel featuring the Coalition for Revisioning Our Safety (CROS), Care-Based Safety (CBS), and Groundcover will discuss the importance of community-led, unarmed non-police responses to public safety concerns in Washtenaw County. This event is generously sponsored by Working Films.  Refreshments will be provided. Films are closed captioned. Wheelchair accessible entrance is on the Fifth Ave. side of the building. Please reach out about additional access needs by September 12. RSVP for this event here. Feel free to invite your friends.

For this “Read and Look,” the Kelsey is joining other Museums for All organizations and the Association of Children’s Museums to partner with the ultimate expert in all things fun, Nickelodeon, for “Our World: Worldwide Day of Play” on September 30, 2023. This event is dedicated to bringing opportunities for joyful learning through play to member museums and their communities, with a focus on getting kids and their families up, out, and playing around!

Join us for a kid-friendly tour of the Kelsey Museum at our “Read and Look” program! We will begin by reading aloud *The Museum*, written by Susan Verde with illustrations by Peter H. Reynolds, then explore the galleries to find art and artifacts that make us want to sing, feel, dance, think, create, and connect with the people of the past. Take home a booklet of activities and coloring pages for further discovery. This tour is great for our younger visitors, ages 4–8. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

This event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield, South Carolina: Exhibition Tour with GUEST TBD (October 1, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110483 110483-21824973@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 1, 2023 2:00pm

.

Join exhibition co-curator and U-M Associate Professor of History Jason Young for an exploration of the dynamic exhibition Hear Me Now: The Black Potters of Old Edgefield South Carolina. Hear Me Now centers around the complicated history and continuing legacy of an African American ceramic tradition that emerged out of the plantation economies of Edgefield, South Carolina. As an artistic tradition rooted in the history of American slavery, the exhibition highlights the tangled histories of race, slavery and art in this country. The exhibition features historic work including monumental storage jars by the enslaved and literate potter and poet Dave, later recorded as David Drake as well as leading contemporary Black artists who have responded to or whose practice resonates with the Edgefield story. Established figures like Theaster Gates and Simone Leigh, as well as younger, emerging artists like Adebunmi Gbadebo, Woody De Othello, and Robert Pruitt, have contributed to the show. Working primarily in clay, these artists respond to the legacy of the Edgefield potters and consider the resonance of this history for audiences today.

Hear Me Now is organized by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with support from the Terra Foundation for American Art and the Henry Luce Foundation.

Lead support for UMMA's presentation of the exhibition is provided by Michigan Engineering, the U-M Office of the Provost, the U-M Office of the President, the Americana Foundation, the U-M College of Literature, Science, and the Arts, the U-M Inclusive History Project, and Michigan Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by Larry and Brenda Thompson and Melissa Kaish and Jonathan Dorfman.

Stop by for a free book! To mark Banned Books Week (https://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/banned) we're giving away copies of some recently published books that have been banned or challenged because they address sexuality, race, gender, and other topics. All are welcome, and we're inviting some campus VIPs to participate.

This year's theme, "Let Freedom Read!" faces off against the spread of book bans, both nationwide and here in Michigan. Along with free books (until we run out), you'll find information about actions you can take to fight back, because the freedom to read is essential to a functioning democracy.

Systems Thinking Workshop
part of the UMSI Theme Year on Water Conservation & Access

Facilitated by Paul Seelbach, Retired School for Environment and Sustainability Professor of Practice

Systems thinking is a method used to make sense of the complexity of the world by looking at it in terms of wholes and relationships rather than through evaluating separate parts. It has been used as a way of exploring and developing effective action in complex contexts, enabling systems change. In this workshop, students will explore and consider water-related challenges and complex water processes through a systems lens. This will involve an introduction to systems theory, considering patches and connectivity within systems, thinking about what role humans play within systems, and placing systems thinking in the information context. Students will be provided an interactive opportunity to apply learning within group activities. This event is part of the UMSI Theme Year: Water Conservation and Access series.

Stop by for a free book! To mark Banned Books Week (https://www.ala.org/advocacy/bbooks/banned) we're giving away copies of some recently published books that have been banned or challenged because they address sexuality, race, gender, and other topics. This year's theme, "Let Freedom Read!" faces off against the spread of book bans, both nationwide and here in Michigan. Along with free books (until we run out), you'll find information about actions you can take to fight back, because the freedom to read is essential to a functioning democracy.

Read and Look | Greece! Rome! Monsters! (October 7, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/112505 112505-21829032@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, October 7, 2023 2:00pm
Location: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

Join us for our “Read and Look” program in the museum galleries on select Saturdays. We will take over a corner of the museum to read the book *Greece! Rome! Monsters!* by John Harris, then find related artifacts and art on display. This tour is great for our younger visitors, ages 4–8. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

About the story: Everybody’s heard of a centaur, but not everyone has seen a blue centaur dressed to head out to a disco! He’s one of the updated mythological creatures who populate *Greece! Rome! Monsters!* This book presents twenty creepy creatures—from harpies to Medusa herself to the fire-breathing Chimera—in jazzy retellings by John Harris, with eye-popping illustrations by Southern California illustrator Calef Brown. Together, the words and pictures provide children (and grownups!) with close encounters of the mythological kind.

This event is free and open to all visitors. If you have any questions or concerns regarding accessing this event, please visit our accessibility page at https://myumi.ch/zwPkd or contact the education office by calling (734) 647-4167. We ask for advance notice as some accommodations may require more time for the university to arrange.

Title: Design Principles for Metalloprotein Chemistry

Abstract: Metalloproteins catalyze some of Nature’s most amazing and difficult chemical transformations. One such transformation, of interest to our laboratory, is the use of a high valent Fe-based oxidant to facilitate the functionalization of a traditionally inert C–H bond. Since this chemistry is vital to a variety of biochemical pathways, metalloproteins are recognized for their potential to build natural products with medical, environmental, and industrial relevance, and to degrade environmental contaminants. However, the practical applicability of metalloproteins, in many cases, is limited by a gap in knowledge regarding structure–function relationships. Within our broad interests of elucidating the structure and mechanism of understudied metalloproteins, I will highlight our work on the Rieske Oxygenases. I will showcase our progress toward identifying the architectural motifs that Rieske oxygenases employ to dictate site-selectivity, substrate specificity, and reaction outcome in different enzyme systems. Furthermore, I will detail our mechanistic work on a divergent Rieske oxygenase that catalyzes two iterative monooxygenation reactions. Collectively, this work adds to our fundamental understanding of Rieske oxygenase chemistry, provides predictive power for thinking about how other members of the 70,000-membered enzyme class can be custom-tuned to catalyze alternative reactions, and will facilitate rational engineering of these catalysts.

Powered by the U-M Sustainable Food Program (UMSFP) and the Campus Farm at Matthaei Botanical Gardens (CF), this project seeks to increase access to local food for students and engage the wider U-M community in food systems learning and engagement opportunities. Students receive a 30% discount and the proceeds from the Farm Stand go towards funding student-led sustainable food initiatives here at the U-M through UMSFP’s mini-grants for food justice program.
