So what exactly do electrical and computer engineers do? We do everything! We are there in all electronic devices (cell phones, computers, cars, appliances, etc). And we light up the world – efficiently of course!

It may seem obvious that ancient cultures living along the Mediterranean, would rely heavily on the sea, not only as a means of travel but as a plentiful food source. The fishing industry was especially valuable in trade for other commodities such as grains and olive oil.

The importance of fish to the ancient world is found in many subtle (and small) ways across many of the Mediterranean cultures represented at the Kelsey. Join us to learn about the fishing industry, as we view some "fishy" decorations.

Organized By: William L. Clements Library

As we celebrate the library’s centennial, this exhibit is an attempt to answer a question asked often by visitors, how do you decide what to acquire to add to your collections.

It builds on the landmark publication of the library’s 75th anniversary, One Hundred and One Treasures From the Collections of the William L. Clements Library, edited by former library director John Dann. This exhibit—and its expanded online version—pairs items from 101 Treasures with related items that have for the most part been acquired since 1998. Those that were acquired earlier are items about which we’ve learned new things in the intervening 25 years.

Location: William Clements Library

It is often said that the ancient Egyptians had no word for “art.” But does this mean they did not have art? Definitely not! In this tour, we will look at artifacts representing Egyptian art from the Predynastic period until the Graeco-Roman period. We will see pottery, statues, jewelry, reliefs, and more and will consider what these artifacts tell us about the ancient Egyptians.

The theme of this tour is “Tiny Objects, Big Stories.” Oftentimes, it’s the smallest artifacts that can tell us the most about the people of the ancient world. In this tour, we’ll focus on some of the smaller objects in the Kelsey Museum—oil lamps, Cippus of Horus, tiny figurines—and learn what they reveal about the ancient world.

Join us at the Kelsey Museum as we look at and talk about our replica Roman dining room based on the Villa of the Mysteries in Pompeii. Commissioned by Francis W. Kelsey and painted by Maria Barosso in the early 20th century, the vibrant watercolor reconstruction is one of the highlights of our collection. Learn about the rich imagery of the frescoes—depicting young women engaging in mysterious rituals—and the history of the Kelsey’s nearly life-size representation.

Location: William Clements Library

Join us as we uncover stories and debunk myths about the distinctive University of Michigan Law Quadrangle.

The tour starts on the southeast corner of State St. and N University. Please dress weather appropriate.

The Romantic Life at U of M Walking Tour takes you through some of the beautiful and notable portions of the Nichols Arboretum starting at the Peony Garden, as well as a few of the dorms surrounding the Detroit Observatory, where the tour ends. While you learn about the history surrounding these spots, you will also get to hear some stories of the romantic lives of some of our faculty, students, and alumni, as well as some other historical facts about events and lives here at the University of Michigan campus, with an accompanying slideshow filled with photos, scrapbook pages, and letters found here: https://myumi.ch/XnZrd

The tour is about 1.5 hours long with a total of a 1.3 mile walk. It should be noted that a portion of the walking tour has a steep hill, though there are stairs at the steepest section. Please also prepare for the weather, as it can be very hot or rainy during tours.

The starting point will be outside the Peony Garden entrance, at the Burnham House located at 1610 Washington Hts Ann Arbor, MI 48109.

Parking is available along the street on Washington Hts, in the Palmer Drive Parking Garage, or up off of Observatory St near Forest Hill Cemetery. The observatory is within 2 blocks of multiple city and campus bus stops.
