Presenter: Maureen Coleman, University of Chicago
Title: Linking microbial communities and biogeochemistry across the Laurentian Great Lakes

About the presentation: The Laurentian Great Lakes hold 20% of Earth’s surface freshwater and provide essential ecosystem services. Moreover, as an interconnected waterway that spans strong environmental gradients, the Great Lakes represent a unique natural laboratory for understanding how physical, chemical, and biological forces interact to shape microbial communities and biogeochemistry. Here we explore the drivers of microbial diversity and activity across the Great Lakes, using samples collected as part of an ongoing multi-year time series. First we characterized community composition across lakes, depths, seasons, and years. We found that depth and light are strong drivers of community structure in stratified water columns. Across surface waters, we found distinct microbial signatures in each of the Great Lakes, reflecting their biogeochemical variability. To explore metabolic functions, we reconstructed hundreds of microbial genomes and created a microbial tree of life for the Laurentian Great Lakes. We mapped ecological distribution patterns for these genomes and found distinct distributions for taxa and metabolisms across lakes and depths. We focus here on two important groups for ecology and biogeochemistry, the cyanobacteria and nitrifying Bacteria and Archaea. Our work represents the first picture of microbial diversity across the entire Laurentian Great Lakes and is an essential baseline from which to monitor future ecosystem change.

About the speaker: Dr. Coleman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago. She is a microbial ecologist who studies the causes and consequences of microbial diversity in aquatic systems. Currently her lab is busy characterizing microbial communities, genomic diversity, and biogeochemistry across the Laurentian Great Lakes. She is also cultivating new microbial lineages and developing genetic tools to study their biology. She holds an undergraduate degree in biology from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT. She was a postdoc at MIT & Caltech before joining the University of Chicago in 2012.

Join us for a monthly Taizé Prayer Service with First Pres Ann Arbor, now held virtually.

What is a Taizé Service?

This style of worship was developed at Taizé, a monastic community located in Taizé, France, founded in the 1940’s by a Swiss named Roger Louis Schütz-Marsauche or Brother Roger. The “brothers” of the community have taken a vow of celibacy and are committed to a lifetime of simplicity, service, and community. There is an ecumenical emphasis at Taizé, which says the community “wants its life to be a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and between separated peoples.”

A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, a period of silence, liturgical readings, and icons. There is no preaching. The style of prayer practiced at Taizé has attracted many worshipers from around the globe and from many different denominations. The prayers consist of “short chants, repeated again and again,” according to an introduction in a Taizé songbook. “The words are sung over many times.”

Taizé Services have been a practice of worshipping here at First Pres on Ash Wednesday. All are welcome!

In this Teach-Out you will experience some of our extraordinary planet's natural beauty and examine how climate change impacts one of the most vulnerable places on earth, the isolated Arctic island of Greenland. In June 2019, a team of students, faculty, and staff from the University of Michigan embarked on an expedition to conduct experiments and learn about how climate change is impacting this area of the planet. In this Teach-Out, you will join a group of students on their personal and professional journeys through Greenland, you will learn from leading climate scientists about how climate change is impacting Greenland and other parts of our planet, and will have the opportunity to share your stories about how you engage with the natural environment in your own backyard.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) has a new program option known as a Shared Interest Group (SIG). A SIG brings people together who have a common interest that they wish to pursue indefinitely within a structure of meetings and activities designed primarily by the members of the group.

A SIG does not have a formal class syllabus. Members of a SIG determine the content and discussion of a SIG. A designated facilitator arranges meetings, takes attendance, and initiates the discussion among the SIG members on how the group will operate.

Healthcare is undergoing radical changes. Consider robotic surgery, immunotherapy for cancer, the staggering cost of new drugs, whole genome sequencing, detailed imaging of the brain, walk-in clinics in drug stores, and telemedicine.

Participants in this SIG will consider one aspect of such changes each month and discuss the consequences for their families and on a national basis. Health practitioners are encouraged to register for the SIG in order to enrich the discussion with their personal expertise and knowledge.

This Shared Interest Group will be facilitated by Bruce Friedman and will meet on the first Wednesday of each month.

Three decades into an illustrious and multifaceted career, Kevin Griffin finally decided to write and record his very first full-length solo album, "Anywhere You Go." The Better Than Ezra frontman, award-winning songwriter, and Pilgrimage Festival co-founder has added yet another persona to his resume: solo troubadour. Buoyed by minimal production, sweeping vocal harmonies, and narrative lyricism, he’s penned some of his most intimate, inimitable, and irresistible tunes to date.“My guiding rule was to do something different…” says Griffin. “…to just do the opposite of my first instinct. I wanted to bring all the music that I’m moved by into a collection of songs that didn’t pull from my usual bag of tricks. I started with no expectations, considerations, or concessions other than just wanting to make music that I loved, and I think because of that the whole process has been a joy."

One of the best live acts to come out of Ireland in recent years is the multi-awarded winning We Banjo 3. With a seven-time all-Ireland banjo champ, a four-time banjo champ, another member who is an all-Ireland champ on both fiddle and bodhran, and with a passionate lead vocalist like a young Springsteen adopted by the Chieftains (yes, they're a quartet, but there are three banjos), the result is unforgettable. On both sides of the Atlantic the word is out about this group! WB3 performed at the “Friends of Ireland” luncheon on Capitol Hill attended by House Speaker Paul Ryan, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, and has headlined virtually every major U.S .Celtic fest for several years in a row. With a strong bluegrass influence (they call their music "Celtgrass"), the band is rapidly gaining favor in the worlds of bluegrass and Americana as well, as evidenced by their invites to Merlefest, ROMP Fest, Sisters Folk Fest, Old Settlers Fest, Four Corners Fest, and more! They come to Michigan with a new release, "Haven.

Tartan Terrors (March 7, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71539 71539-17836354@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, March 7, 2020 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

The Tartan Terrors are not a band but, in the words of the organizers, "North America's premiere Celtic event, featuring the best in music, comedy and dance." Amazed by the blistering chops of a two-time world champion bagpiper, the driving tones of drums from around the world, and a guitar played unlike any you've ever heard, standing-room-only audiences come to understand why Dig This magazine declares the Terrors "one act to keep an eye on!" Combine all the music with championship-caliber Highland Dancers and internationally recognized comedic performers, and this Celtic group goes beyond the ordinary. Members of The Tartan Terrors have performed on four different continents; in some of the most prestigious festivals, Highland Games, and theaters in North America, for a U.S. president and Britain's Queen, and on Good Morning America. Experience the phenomenon of the Tartan Terrors and see why Celtic Beat hails them as "the heirs apparent to the mayhem"!

Shodo-Japanese Calligraphy (March 9, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/70818 70818-17654649@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 9, 2020 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Shodo-Japanese Calligraphy: Shodo is the art of drawing characters with brush and ink to express spiritual depth through the beauty of the brush strokes. Calligraphy began in China, but in Japan, both Kanji (Chinese characters) and Kana (Japanese phonetic characters) are combined and devised to create a uniquely Japanese art. With the brush soaked in ink, the thickness and the tone of the characters can be controlled. In this way, a calligrapher expresses his or her own spirit and thought. In the class, students will express and practice the art of Japanese calligraphy with a brush and black ink, learning both Kana and Kanji characters. The drawing process itself encourages a calming of the mind and peacefulness, similar to a form of meditation. Tools provided for classroom only. This is an art class with black ink, so you might want to wear a smock or cloth that can be washed. Konomi Shinohara Corbin taught the first Calligraphy class offered at the University of Michigan some years ago. She has taught Japanese Language at both the University of Michigan and at Eastern Michigan University.

You will learn to recognize the tiles, read and understand the “hands”, and practice playing with ongoing review and support. The course is taught by Miriam Shaw, an expert player of many years’ experience. The purchase of a current Mah-Jongg card is included in the class price. Classes run on Mondays from March 9 through 30.

Toronto born Noah Reid is known mostly for his work on television, film and stage. It wasn’t until recently that the world got a glimpse of his serious musical talent.

In 2015, Reid was nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Original Song in the feature film People Hold On. In 2017, his soulful acoustic cover of Tina Turner’s pop hit The Best on CBC’s Schitt’s Creek cracked #3 on the iTunes Canada Charts. That directed fans all over the world to Reid’s 2016 debut solo album Songs From A Broken Chair.

With a songwriting style that touches on the singer-songwriters of the seventies and an honest, contemporary delivery, Noah Reid is a combination of old and new, of polished and rusted over. A second studio album produced by Matthew Barber is underway and expected to be released in 2020.

The Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) Study (March 10, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73095 73095-18140512@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 10, 2020 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research

MIDUS is a U.S. national, longitudinal study which focuses on the role of psychological, social, and biological factors in accounting for age-related variations in health and well-being among two national samples of Americans.

The MIDUS data are available through NACDA (the data archive on aging populations), part of ICPSR. MIDUS and NACDA are both funded by the National Institute on Aging. MIDUS is the most frequently downloaded dataset from NACDA, and one of the most frequently downloaded data series from ICPSR.

This free webinar provides an overview of the MIDUS data series we have archived within NACDA and will guide users on how to discover MIDUS resources, as well as highlight the research potential of this multi-scope, longitudinal collection. A substantial portion of the talk will demonstrate how Data Documentation Initiative (DDI) tools have enabled MIDUS to adhere to FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, reproducible) principals.

This webinar will feature:
- A presentation about MIDUS (background and general use) directly from researcher and Co-PI, Dr. Barry Radler from the University of Wisconsin-Madison
- How to access MIDUS data from NACDA, both public and restricted data versions
- Information about the MIDUS Colectica Portal

Participants will also have the opportunity to provide feedback and ask questions.
This webinar is free and open to the public.

Just how much phosphorus can a wetland absorb and retain over the long run? That’s the question that researchers have spent the past two years investigating as part of an effort to reduce the phosphorus loading that is fueling algal blooms in Lake Erie. A research team from Old Woman Creek Reserve and the University of Toledo developed a Bayesian hierarchical modeling approach to calculate the phosphorus retention capacity of wetlands with limited datasets.

In this webinar, the team will share some of their key findings, management implications, and potential for other practitioners to use their monitoring guide and statistical codes to calculate the nutrient retention capacity of their wetlands. In addition to taking audience questions, the team will offer some ideas about how their work informs an ambitious new water quality initiative in Ohio.

Karan Casey has long been one of the most innovative provocative and imitated voices in Irish folk music. Since embarking on her solo career after a stint as lead vocalist of the legendary band Solas, she has released six solo albums, a duo album, and a children's album and has appeared on more than 50 albums in total. She has toured constantly throughout North America, Europe and Japan, performing solo, with her own band and with many other artists, often from outside the realm of Irish music. Her adventurous spirit results from the varied influences--classical music, jazz, and American pop--that Casey has made her own since growing up amid Irish traditional music in Ballyduff Lower, County Waterford. Karan Casey, says the Associated Press, has "a voice so beautiful, it's almost impossible to avoid falling under her spell." She comes to Michigan with a recent album, "Hieroglyphs That Tell the Tale."

Natural disasters losses have accumulated to over four trillion U.S. dollars and nearly three million fatalities in the past four decades. The number of disasters continues to increase, partly due to increases in frequency, size, or extent of the hazards themselves, but also from increasing vulnerability and/or decreasing resiliency of society. This course will explore vulnerability and resiliency to natural hazards, past and future outlooks, and the role of urbanization and corruption, highlighted by several recent earthquakes and hurricanes.
Mr. Hetland is an associate professor in the UM Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, specializing in natural hazards, effects of climate change, and vulnerability. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Thursdays March 12 through March 26.

Live event canceled: To limit the potential spread of respiratory viruses and safeguard those at highest risk of catching COVID-19, the University of Michigan has canceled all live events with estimated attendance of over 100 people.

As a result, live Penny Stamps Speaker Series events will not take place as scheduled. When possible, our weekly presentations will be available online: video presentations will be announced via email and on the Stamps website (https://stamps.umich.edu/stamps).

Dr. Alex Dehgan’s contributions to the fight against climate change are prolific, solutions-oriented, and built to a global scale. As CEO and co-founder of Conservation X Labs, an innovation and technology start-up focused on conservation, Dehgan and his team apply science, technology, open innovation, design, and engineering to try to end human-induced extinction and address the planet’s biggest environmental challenges. Dehgan holds a PhD and master’s degree from the University of Chicago’s Committee on Evolutionary Biology, and a law degree from the University of California, Hastings. He was chosen as an “Icon of Science” by Seed magazine in 2005, received the World Technology Award for Policy in 2011, and has been recognized through multiple awards from the US Departments of State and Defense, and USAID. In 2013, the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) selected Dehgan as one of its 40@40 fellows out of 2,600 AAAS Science Policy Fellows as an individual who has shown “exemplary dedication to applying science to serve society, was a creative, innovative, and collaborative problem solver in addressing global challenges, and was an uncommon ambassador for the role of science and technology.” He is the author of The Snow Leopard Project: And Other Adventures in Warzone Conservation (PublicAffairs, 2019).

The tale of an eccentric band of culinary ronin who guide the widow of a noodle-shop owner on her quest for the perfect recipe, this rapturous “ramen western” by Japanese director Juzo Itami is an entertaining, genre-bending adventure underpinned by a deft satire of the way social conventions distort the most natural of human urges—our appetites. Interspersing the efforts of Tampopo (Nobuko Miyamoto) and friends to make her café a success with the erotic exploits of a gastronome gangster and glimpses of food culture both high and low, the sweet, sexy, and surreal Tampopo is a lavishly inclusive paean to the sensual joys of nourishment, and one of the most mouthwatering examples of food on film ever made.

Fabricating the Network Case in Russia (March 13, 2020 6:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73547 73547-18258850@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 13, 2020 6:30pm

Solidarity action with Russian anti-fascists.

As part of a broader crackdown preceding the 2018 Russian presidential election and the FIFA World Cup, the Russian Security Service (FSB) kidnapped six people in Penza and two in Petersburg. FSB agents tortured the arrestees into signing confessions. This became the "Network Case." On the basis of these "confessions," the Russian courts drew up convictions of years--or decades--in prison. But they were not expecting widespread public outcry in Russia or unceasing international attention. By applying pressure from abroad, online, and in letters to prisoners, we can do our part to keep these political prisoners in the spotlight, and out of the shadows!

There will be a short informational slide-show. Come hear the compelling stories of the activists caught in these cases; the cruel, absurd, and, sometimes, comical nature of the charges; and the creative resistance and solidarity strategies that activists developed in an increasingly repressive climate. Talk led by Ania Aizman (U-M Slavic).

There will be materials for making art and writing short letters of support of the political prisoners, as well as information about direct donations to the Russian prisoners' advocacy group. And good food!

Ever since winning the Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition, Trout Steak Revival has quickly become a quintessential Colorado band. The band won an Emmy Award for a soundtrack they contributed to a Rocky Mountain PBS. They collaborate with school children in mentoring programs in Colorado and nationwide as part of the Can’d Aid Tunes Ambassador Program. Their music is featured on Bank of Colorado’s radio and television advertisements.

Speaker: Clark McCall, Citizens' Climate Lobby

Part 1- Understanding what we need to do to address the problem of climate change:

We know climate change is here. We can see serious effects throughout the world already. We know we have a narrow window of time to make changes to avoid the very worst results by limiting the global temperature rise to 1.5-2.0℃. But what exactly will it take to stay within this limit? What changes have the greatest impact? Electric vehicles? Eating a vegetarian diet? Subsidies for solar? A fee on carbon? With the help of a trained facilitator using a policy simulator tool, session attendees will have a chance to discuss different options and explore what impact they will have. Come to this session with your ideas for making an impact and leave knowing what different changes have the most impact.

Part 2- How does a fee on carbon and dividend support environmental justice?

Experts agree that a fee on carbon and a dividend is one of the best policies for addressing climate change. But how does an added fee affect our budgets? How can people with low income manage a carbon fee? This session will examine the economic and personal impacts of a carbon fee and dividend on both the climate and on people.

Write-Togethers will be running remotely every Monday on BlueJeans. The primary objective of the Write-Together—to provide a supportive community environment where you can make progress on larger writing projects—does not change in the move from in-person to remote. As we start redefining what our daily lives look like, having a virtual community in place to hold yourself accountable to your larger writing goals can be a potentially anchoring structure. If you are able to join us, we will look forward to touching base with you about your writing goals, and holding space for writing assistance as needed.
You can join the BlueJeans meeting by clicking on the link below, or dialing in by phone. This is set up to be a chat-only meeting, so that we don’t overtax the server, though we may enable cameras at later meetings if participants prefer it.

Write-Together sessions provide structure, space, and time for graduate writers working on writing at any stage, from papers to theses to journal articles to dissertations and more. Write-Together sessions bring graduate writers into a common quiet space to work. We will periodically offer helpful handouts on a range of writing and work productivity topics, and a Sweetland representative will also be on-site to answer any brief writing questions you may have. Breakfast refreshments will be provided.
Co-sponsored by the Rackham Graduate School and the Sweetland Center for Writing.

Webinar: Advancing the Use of Blue Carbon for Coastal Systems (March 17, 2020 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73424 73424-18217168@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 17, 2020 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Graham Sustainability Institute

Coastal wetlands capture carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and permanently store carbon in wetland soils. This “blue carbon” service can be used to inform and incentivize wetland restoration; however, the science behind blue carbon and the role of carbon finance in support of coastal restoration and conservation are still emerging.

Over the past 12 years, the National Estuarine Research Reserve System and its partners have been filling key information gaps and fostering collaborations to advance understanding and application of blue carbon for the management of coastal wetlands. Recent projects are helping to quantify the carbon storage potential of coastal wetlands, predict greenhouse gas fluxes, and assess the market feasibility of using carbon offsets to support wetland restoration.

In this webinar, panelists representing four regions across the United States will share lessons learned from their work leading blue carbon projects, and offer ideas for advancing the use of blue carbon for coastal wetland management.

Food Literacy for All is a community-academic partnership course started in 2017. Structured as an evening lecture series, Food Literacy for All features different guest speakers each week to address challenges and opportunities of diverse food systems. The course is designed to prioritize engaged scholarship that connects theory and practice. By bringing national and global leaders, we aim to ignite new conversations and deepen existing commitments to building more equitable, health-promoting, and ecologically sustainable food systems.

The course is co-led by Cindy Leung (School of Public Health), Jerry Ann Hebron (Oakland Ave. Farm) and Lilly Fink Shapiro (Sustainable Food Systems Initiative). In partnership with Detroit Food Policy Council and FoodLab Detroit.

In spring 1944 Yiddish poet Avrom Sutzkever, witness to the destruction of the Vilna Ghetto, was airlifted from the partisan forest to Moscow. At the urging of Soviet journalist Ilya Ehrenberg, Sutzkever wrote a memoir of the ghetto experience which was subsequently published in Moscow and Paris in 1945. How does Sutzkever's early account of Jewish destruction and heroism establish a particular Yiddish memoryscape? And what are the challenges of translating such a work for a 21st-Century readership?

With a sweetly mellifluous soprano echoing Blossom Dearie’s lighter-than-air
approach as well as her gift for evocative songwriting, Kat Edmonson is a rare
artist who embodies the spirit of the past while remaining resolutely au courant.
Her unusually charming and seamless blend of old and new has garnered
attention on “NPR Tiny Desk Concerts”, “Austin City Limits”, and “A Prairie Home
Companion”.
The vintage pop and jazz vocalist’s new album Dreamers Do is out February 7,
2020 with a forty-city, U.S. tour to follow. The album blends original
compositions and reimagined mid 20 th century classic Disney songs, and tells a
story which takes place over the course of one sleepless night. Dreamers Do
follows the release of 2018’s Old Fashioned Gal, which Billboard calls “an
intimate journey from doubt to resolve and implied triumph.”

The Dustbowl Revival has always been about pushing the boundaries of what American roots music can be. In many ways, they could have continued creating joyful, booty-shaking songs and cut-to-heart folk-rock ballads that lift up their transcendent live shows—and mining new energetic material from the place where folk music, funk, and soul meet. But the band’s newest album, "Is It You, Is It Me," is something different entirely. Produced by Sam Kassirer [Lake Street Dive, Josh Ritter] and engineered by Brian Joseph [Bon Iver, Sufjan Stevens], it represents the latest stage in a band that never stops evolving and refuses to stand still. The album tackles uneasy topics—often where the political feels personal, especially in the defiant "Get Rid of You," which was inspired by the student activists who emerged from the tragic Parkland High School shooting in Florida. The ominous driving brass groove of "Enemy" hones in on a painful generational split between a daughter and her parents who may have voted in a tyrant, and have become strangers to her. This yearning search for common ground pervades the record as a whole.

We build Lagrangian continuum models that utilize vehicle trajectory data obtained via V2X connectivity. These models are able to capture three important features of traffic flow: (i) the propagation of congestions in time, (ii) the propagation of congestions in space, (iii) the string instability/stability, that is, the amplification/decay of traffic waves while having only three tunable parameters. These models also enable us to study the large-scale impact of connected automated vehicles on traffic flow control.

Gabor Orosz is an Associate Professor for the Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Michigan. Gabor's research interests include Nonlinear dynamics and control, time-delay systems, networks and complex systems, dynamics and control of connected vehicles, ground robots and autonomous vehicles, neural networks, gene-regulatory networks.

In light of COVID-19 and in alignment with university policy, Rackham is delivering our professional and academic programming when possible in alternative formats. This workshop will not be held in person but instead will be offered using Zoom technology. Please be sure to check your email the morning of the online workshop for the link to participate in the program.
Increasingly, hiring committees are interested in how prospective faculty job candidates will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, many academic employers have begun to request a “diversity statement” as part of the faculty job application process. In this interactive session, we will discuss best practices for writing diversity statements, examine sample statements, and work through activities designed to help participants start writing their own statement.
This workshop is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Space is limited. For faculty and staff, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/XeD0b.
We want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this online event, please indicate your accommodation requirements in the registration page for this event.

Shaka Senghor is a leading voice in criminal justice reform. His memoir, Writing My Wrongs: Life, Death, and Redemption in an American Prison, was released in March 2016 and debuted on The New York Times Best Seller list as well as The Washington Post Best Seller list. Writing My Wrongs chronicles Senghor’s personal experience with the criminal justice system after being sent to prison at age 19 on second-degree murder charges. An unforgettable tale of forgiveness and second chances, Senghor’s book reminds us that our worst deeds don’t define who we are or what we can contribute to the world. Senghor’s story has inspired thousands and serves as a compelling testament to the power of hope, compassion, and unconditional love.

Senghor is the recipient of numerous awards, including the 2016 EBONY Power 100 list and the 2016 NAACP Great Expectations Award. Senghor was also a 2014 TED Prize finalist for The Atonement Project (a program that aims to promote healing and understanding between victims of violence and violent offenders), is a former MIT Media Lab Director’s Fellow, and is a current fellow in the inaugural class of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Community Leadership Network. He shares his story of redemption around the world through his company, Shaka Senghor Inc., dedicated to shifting societal narratives through storytelling with deep social impact.

Supported by the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan, presenting the 25th Annual Exhibition of Art by Michigan Prisoners, on view at the Duderstadt Center Gallery March 18–April 1, 2020.

Brian Vander Ark is the lead singer of the Verve Pipe, which became one of Michigan's biggest rock bands of the last decade with songs like the number-one hit "The Freshmen." In 2001 he appeared as part of the band Blood Pollution in the Mark Wahlberg movie "Rock Star." Then he lit out on his own, selling all his possessions and rediscovering his love of performing. He has charisma to spare! On his studio albums, plus several more or less official live releases (an Ark show is a good place to pick up the more obscure items), Brian has taken up personal themes of family, love, and loss. The Grand Rapids Press hails Brian's way of "adroitly meshing acoustic grace with penetrating rock and pop power." Oh, and his name means "of The Ark" in Dutch. If you haven't seen this rock legend's solo show yet, what are you waiting for?

She earned a JD from Yale Law School, an MA from Oxford University, and a BA from The College of Wooster.

This is lecture #3 in the five-part series "Facing the Future: The Challenge of Climate Change" which explores how climate change is impacting every corner of our earth, and every aspect of our lives.

Harnessing the Geospatial Components in Social Science Research Data (March 20, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73699 73699-18298296@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 20, 2020 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: ICPSR at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research

In this webinar, co-organized by the American Association of Geographers (AAG) and The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR), we will take a look at ICPSR’s data archive from a “geospatial” perspective. This webinar is free and open to anyone interested in accessing data or services related to social science research and/or wants to learn more about geospatial aspects of these data.

The webinar will consist of an overview of AAG and ICPSR, followed by a demo on different ways of searching for geography-related data in ICPSR’s archive and a few examples of data containing geospatial identifiers. Finally, a short overview of other scholarly services at ICPSR will be provided, such as the development of ICPSR’s geospatial virtual data enclave (GVDE) infrastructure, leadership and training for the social science research community in data access, curation, methods of research data analysis, and guidance to members about managing their data responsibly and ethically to support research.

Presenters: Bing She (ICPSR), Coline Dony (AAG), and Stuart Hutchings (ICPSR) will take any questions from attendees related to searching and accessing ICPSR data as well as questions on how to harness the geospatial component in these research data. If you are interested to read more details about the AAG or ICPSR’s, and their data archive, we recommend this recent AAG Newsletter article: http://news.aag.org/2019/12/icpsr-provides-access-to-carefully-curated-geography-related-data/

This virtual workshop will also be offered at the Annual Meeting of the AAG in Denver, more info at this link: http://myumi.ch/518WB

Perspectives Ensemble, in cooperation with the Center for Armenian Studies, presents a musical evening featuring the performances of Zulal, a vocal trio composed of Teni Apelian, Anaïs Alexandra Tekerian, and Yeraz Markarian, and Perspectives Ensemble members, Artistic Director and flutist Sato Moughalian, harpist Stacey Shames, and guest percussionist Mike List.

“Dark Eyes/New Eyes” celebrates Armenian music in a program that embraces ancestral village songs, as well as other traditional and composed pieces by historic and contemporary composers. The concert pays homage to the journeys of our families, ancestors and departed ones. Six musicians offer lively and contemplative music, including sharagans (Armenian hymns), work songs, humorous songs, and folk songs preserved by the great Armenian composer-musicologist Gomidas Vartabed, in his own transcriptions, as well as new arrangements, languidly beautiful melodies of 18th-century troubadour/composer Sayat-Nova, the music of Alan Hovhannes, and the beloved "Lullaby" from Aram Khatchaturian’s ballet "Gayane"--one of several new arrangements by Yerevan-based composer Artur Akshelyan.

After winning a Grammy for his soulful ballad "Walking in Memphis," Marc Cohn solidified his place as one of this generation's most compelling singer/songwriters, combining the precision of a brilliant tunesmith with the passion of a great soul man. He's a natural storyteller, balancing the exuberant with the poignant, and able to distill universal truth out of his often romantic, drawn-from-life tales. Marc has become an Ark favorite, one of those artists who form a unique bond with audiences in the special Ark space, and his shows sell out early. Come by and pick up a copy of Marc's new release, "Work to Do," recorded with the famed Blind Boys of Alabama.

“The documentary My Name Is Kim Bok Dong opened in Korean theaters on August 8, during a time of already tense relations over trade issues between Korea and Japan. The film's topic relates to another ongoing and contentious negotiation between the two governments, concerning compensation for the enslaved Korean women forced to serve as “comfort women” for Japanese soldiers during World War II. The subject of the film, human rights activist, Kim Bok Dong, died in January 2019, at the age of 93, after a 27-year-battle to get Japan to acknowledge its wartime actions. Although exact numbers are hard to document, it’s estimated that as many as 200,000 Korean women were forced into sexual servitude during the war, an enslavement that resulted in physical and psychological trauma. Many women died. Kim, who grew up in what she once described as a “tight knit family,” said she was taken away by the Japanese military at the age of 14, ostensibly to work in a factory. Instead, she said that she was forced to become a sex slave.” –JOAN MACDONALD, Forbes

Rainbow Girls are an eclectic trio comprising three unique musical talents—Vanessa May, Erin Chapin, and Caitlin Gowdey—who seamlessly combine heart-wrenching harmonies, emotive guitar work, and poignant lyrical content into an unusually beautiful sonic tapestry. Hailing from the golden countryside just north of California's Bay Area, they make music that delves deeply into themes of the human experience: hopeful love, honest self-reflection, and pursuits of social justice. Their latest album, "American Dream," crystallizes these ideas in acoustic amber, encapsulating a beautiful new direction for their evolving sound. Originally formed in Santa Barbara in 2010, Rainbow Girls have spread their musical wings both internationally and domestically, from busking on the streets of Europe and playing pubs and theaters in the UK, to house concerts, festivals, and shows in the US. Rainbow Girls have also gained recognition on NPR's Tiny Desk concert series and KQED radio's "The California Report."

Language-Driven Video Understanding (March 23, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73904 73904-18393018@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 23, 2020 12:00pm

Abstract: Video understanding has advanced quite a long way in the past decade, accomplishing tasks including low-level segmentation and tracking that study objects as pixel-level segments or bounding boxes to more high-level activity recognition or classification tasks that classify a video scene to a categorical action label. Despite the progress that has been made, much of this work remains a proxy for an eventual task or application that requires a holistic view of the video, such as objects, actions, attributes, and other semantic components. In this defense, we argue that language could deliver the required holistic representation. It plays a significant role in video understanding by allowing machines to communicate with humans and to understand our requests, as shown in tasks such as text-to-video search engine, voice-guided robot manipulation, to name a few. Our language-driven video understanding focuses on two specific problems: video description and visual grounding. What marks our viewpoint different from prior literature is twofold. First, we propose a bottom-up structured learning scheme by decomposing long video into individual procedure steps and represent each one with a description. Second, we propose to have both explicit (i.e., supervised) and implicit (i.e., weakly-supervised and self-supervised) grounding between words and visual concepts which enables interpretable modeling of the two spaces.

Diabetic patients suffer from a long-term condition that results in high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia). Many medications for diabetes lose their glycemic control effectiveness over time and patient compliance to these medications is a major challenge. Glycemic control is a vital continuous process and is innately regulated by the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems. There is an opportunity for developing an implantable and automated treatment for diabetic patients by accurately detecting and altering neural activity in autonomic nerves. The renal and vagus nerves contribute in glycemic control and are potential targets for this proposed treatment. This dissertation investigated stimulation of renal nerves for glycemic control, assembled an implantation procedure for neural interface arrays designed for autonomic nerves, and demonstrated high-fidelity physiological signals in the vagus nerve of rats.

Stimulation of renal nerves at kilohertz frequency (33 kHz) showed a notable average increase in urine glucose excretion (+24.5%). In contrast, low frequency (5 Hz) stimulation of renal nerves showed a decrease in glucose excretion (−40.4%). However, these responses may be associated with urine flow rate.

Kilohertz frequency stimulation (50 kHz) of renal nerves in diabetic rats showed a significant average decrease (-168.4%) in blood glucose concentration rate, and an increase (+18.9%) in the overall average area under the curve for urine glucose concentration, with respect to values before stimulation.

An innovative procedure was assembled for the chronic implantation of novel intraneural MIcroneedle Nerve Arrays (MINAs) in rat vagus nerves. Two array attachment approaches (fibrin sealant and rose-bengal bonding) were investigated to secure non-wired MINAs in rat vagus nerves. The fibrin sealant approach was unsuccessful in securing the MINA-nerve interface for 4- and 8-week implant durations. The rose-bengal coated MINAs were in close proximity to axons (≤ 50 μm) in 75% of 1-week and 14% of 6-week implants with no significant harm to the implanted nerves or the overall health of the rats.

Using Carbon Fiber Microelectrode Arrays (CFMAs), physiological neural activity was recorded on 51% of inserted functional carbon fibers in rat vagus nerves, and 1-2 neural clusters were sorted on each carbon fiber with activity. The mean peak-to-peak amplitudes of the sorted clusters were 15.1-91.7 µV with SNR of 2.0-7.0. Propagation of vagal signals were detected in the afferent direction at conduction velocities of 0.7-1.0 m/sec, and efferent signals at 0.7-8.8 m/sec, which are within the conduction velocity range of myelinated and unmyelinated vagus fibers. Furthermore, changes in vagal nerve activity were monitored in breathing and blood glucose modulated conditions.

Overall, this dissertation investigated modulation of neural activity for glycemic control, assembled a new chronic implantation procedure for nerve interface arrays, and monitored physiological signaling in an autonomic nerve. Future work is needed to fully understand the physiological neural signaling, and evaluate the long-term tissue reactivity and recording integrity of implanted electrodes in autonomic nerves. This work supports the potential development of an alternative implantable treatment modality for diabetic patients by modulating and monitoring neural activity in autonomic nerves.

This study group will read one memoir/month written by women. Several will focus on aging and old age, some on grief and loss, some on childhood or the middle years. Each month there will be group discussion of the selected memoir followed by a short reflective writing experience related to the issues raised by the memoir. This is not a memoir-writing class.
It’s an opportunity to use other women’s reflections on their lives to examine our own. Beth Spencer, instructor, a mostly-retired geriatric social worker, developed and facilitated Women & Aging through Literature & Reflective Writing for several years. This Study Group for those 50 and over meets Wednesdays, 10:00 am–12:00 pm on March 25, April 22, May 20, and June 24

Oftentimes when we think of focused ultrasound, we imagine using it to heat and kill tissue. Unlike thermal ablation, histotripsy uses focused ultrasound to mechanically disrupt the target tissue without heating. Histotripsy turns the tissue into liquid-appearing acellular debris – which is absorbed by the body over one to two months – resulting in effective tissue removal.

Histotripsy has been shown to stimulate a powerful immune response in cancer treatment studies. In the treatment of neurological diseases, transcranial histotripsy can produce well-confined focal treatment in a wide range of locations and volumes in the brain, offering the potential to increase the treatment envelope while decreasing treatment time.

Please register to join us at 10:00 AM Eastern on Wednesday, March 25, when Zhen Xu, PhD, will discuss the basic mechanism, instrumentation, bioeffects, and applications of histotripsy. She will also cover the latest preclinical and clinical trial results of developing histotripsy for the treatment of cancer and neurological diseases.

About the Speaker

Zhen Xu, PhD, is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Michigan and a primary inventor and pioneer in histotripsy.

She has received many notable awards, including:
IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society Outstanding Paper Award (2006)
American Heart Association Outstanding Research in Pediatric Cardiology (2010)
National Institutes of Health (NIH) New Investigator Award at the First National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB) Edward C. Nagy New Investigator Symposium (2011)
The Federic Lizzi Early Career Award from The International Society of Therapeutic Ultrasound (ISTU) (2015)
Fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (2019)
Dr. Xu is currently an associate editor for three notable journals: IEEE Transactions on Ultrasound, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control (UFFC); Frontiers in Bioengineering; and BME Frontiers. She is an elected board member of ISTU, a charter member of the US NIH study section, and a principal investigator of grants funded by the Focused Ultrasound Foundation, NIH, American Cancer Association, Office of Naval Research, The Hartwell Foundation, and The Coulter Foundation.

She received her PhD from the University of Michigan in 2005.

This event has been canceled.

In the first half of the twentieth century, the Yiddish speakers looked to vegetarianism as a way of creating better and more rational world. While some writers explicitly linked radical eating to radical thinking, many otherwise revolutionary journals and newspapers were more likely to look upon growing enthusiasm for vegetarianism as a threat to continuity in traditional Jewish cooking. Jochnowitz will examine serious articles addressing the perceived dangers of a vegetarian diet and biting satire poking fun at the ridiculousness of vegetarianism.

Abstract:

Bayesian methods exhibit a number of desirable properties for modern data analysis---including (1) coherent quantification of uncertainty, (2) a modular modeling framework able to capture complex phenomena, (3) the ability to incorporate prior information from an expert source, and (4) interpretability. In practice, though, Bayesian inference necessitates approximation of a high-dimensional integral, and some traditional algorithms for this purpose can be slow---notably at data scales of current interest. The tutorial will cover the foundations of some modern tools for fast, approximate Bayesian inference at scale. One increasingly popular framework is provided by "variational Bayes" (VB), which formulates Bayesian inference as an optimization problem. We will examine key benefits and pitfalls of using VB in practice, with a focus on the widespread "mean-field variational Bayes" (MFVB) subtype. We will highlight properties that anyone working with VB, from the data analyst to the theoretician, should be aware of. And we will discuss a number of open challenges.

Volumetric muscle loss (VML) is the traumatic or surgical loss of skeletal muscle comprising 20-30% or more of the total muscle volume. By definition, VML exceeds the muscle’s capacity for self-repair and results in persistent functional deficits. Significantly, no treatment options exist that can fully restore native structure and function. To address the limitations of current treatments, our laboratory has developed tissue-engineered skeletal muscle units (SMUs) as a novel treatment for VML repair. SMUs have shown promising regenerative potential in a rat VML model; however, limitations of rodent models necessitated transitioning our technology to a large animal (sheep) model.

Despite substantial heterogeneity of muscle progenitor cell populations obtained from craniofacial, trunk, and limb muscle, engineered skeletal muscle tissues are almost exclusively fabricated from cells derived from hindlimb muscle, making the effects of cell source on engineered muscle tissue unknown. Thus, we conducted a comparison of SMUs fabricated from muscle cells isolated from both craniofacial and hindlimb muscle sources and evaluated the effects of these cell sources on SMU structure and function. Specifically, we showed that the semimembranosus muscle was the most clinically relevant muscle source for the fabrication of SMUs.

We also sought to develop a method to scale our SMUs to clinically relevant sizes. We developed a modular fabrication method that combines multiple smaller SMUs into a larger implantable graft. Consequently, we successfully fabricated of one of the largest engineered skeletal muscle tissues to date while avoiding the formation of a necrotic core. To treat peripheral nerve injuries that often accompany VML, we also developed engineered neural conduits (ENCs) to bridge gaps between healthy native nerve and the injury site. We used scaled-up SMUs and ENCs to treat a 30% VML in the ovine peroneus tertius muscle. After a 3-month recovery, SMU-treated groups restored muscle mass and force production to a level that was statistically indistinguishable from the uninjured contralateral muscle.

Lastly, we evaluated the efficacy of SMUs in repairing craniofacial VML. Despite reported differences in the regenerative capacity of craniofacial muscle compared to limb muscle, prior to my thesis there were no models of craniofacial VML in either large or small animal models. Thus, we introduced the first model of craniofacial VML and evaluated the ability of SMUs to treat a 30% VML in the zygomaticus major muscle. Despite using the same injury and repair model in both implantation studies, results showed differences in pathophysiology between craniofacial and hindlimb VML. The fibrotic response was increased in the facial muscle model, and there was tissue tethering and intramuscular fat deposition that was not observed in the hindlimb study. The craniofacial model was also confounded by concomitant denervation and ischemia injuries which was too severe for our SMUs to repair. This study highlighted the importance of balancing the use of a clinically realistic model while also maintaining control over variables related to the severity of the injury.

Overall, this work significantly contributed to the field of skeletal muscle tissue engineering by evaluating the effects of muscle source on the structure and function of SMUs, created a modular fabrication method for tissue scale-up, and introduced a new large animal model, and a craniofacial model of VML. The success of this technology demonstrates its potential for treating clinical VML in the future.

From its high point of affluence and influence and a population of nearly two million in the 1950s, Detroit suffered decades of devastating civil unrest, economic crisis, governmental corruption, and the loss of nearly two-thirds of its population. Today - from bankruptcy and blighted neighborhoods - a new Detroit is arising, enlivened by the creativity of artists whose work is transforming the city, inspiring its residents, and bringing about a sense of renewal and hope.

Dr. Marion “Mame” Jackson, Professor Emerita, Art History, Wayne State University and The University of Michigan, focuses on relationships between art and community and art’s role in preserving culture and nourishing spirit. Lack of a dense network of charging infrastructure is a major barrier to the growth of the plug-in electric vehicle market. Electric vehicle drivers value public charging availability since, among other benefits, it reduces range anxiety. This talk introduces drivers’ willingness to pay functions for public charging infrastructure availability, conditional on electric vehicle type and range, annual travel mileage, energy prices, vehicle efficiency, and household income. At the same time, public charging deployment creates investment opportunities for station operators and electric utilities. Hence, in the last part of this talk, operating costs for fast charging stations are estimated, leveraging utility rates data across the United States. Cost mitigation technologies, such as solar panels and energy storage, are also identified.

Title:
Constant Regret Algorithms for Online Decision-Making

Abstract:
I will present a simple algorithm that achieves constant regret in many widely studied online decision-making problems, including online resource-allocation and pricing, generalized assignment, and online bin packing. In particular, I will consider a general class of finite-horizon control problems, where we see a stream of stochastic arrivals from some known distribution, and need to select actions, with the final objective depending only on the aggregate type-action counts. For such settings, I will introduce a unified algorithmic paradigm, and provide a simple, yet general, condition under which these algorithms achieve constant regret, i.e., additive loss compared to the hindsight optimal solution which is independent of the horizon and state-space. The results stem from an elementary sample-path coupling argument, which may prove useful for a larger class of problems in online decision-making. Time permitting, I will illustrate this by showing how we can use this technique to obtain simple data-driven implementations of the above algorithms, which achieve constant regret with as little as a single data trace.
