Happening @ Michigan https://events.umich.edu/list/rss RSS Feed for Happening @ Michigan Events at the University of Michigan. The Use of Medieval Mythology in Current Political Culture and Propaganda with Martin Shichtman (March 31, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/70338 70338-17584113@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 31, 2020 10:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Professor Shichtman studies the ways by which medieval symbols have been embraced by political movements to represent uncorrupted purity. What’s different about recent evocations of knightly signage is their visibility on the Internet where they have become weaponized to attract members and demean enemies.

The goal of the lecture is first to discuss symbols in the medieval period. The professor will then discuss how such symbols have resurfaced in the Nazi era and in the contemporary environment to serve the political and propaganda goals of various movements.

Dr. Martin B. Shichtman is Director of the Center for Jewish Studies and Professor of English Language and Literature at Eastern Michigan University. He has been a fellow at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and at Brandeis University’s Schusterman Institute for Israel Studies. Dr. Shichtman has co-authored two books, co-edited two collections, and published more than forty scholarly articles. He has presented more than 100 papers at international, national, and regional conferences. He is the recipient of EMU’s Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching and the Eastern Michigan University Alumni Association Award for Teaching Excellence.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: ICPSR at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research

This webinar applies to all researchers, including grads and postdocs who are currently or planning to collect data for research on drug use, alcohol, addiction, HIV, tobacco, and other related topics. This presentation offers a nice overview of how NAHDAP and ICPSR can help to support research and maximize the impact that researchers' data can have on their community. Also, this webinar will give an overview of how you can share your data with the archive, using ICPSR’s deposit system.

The National Addiction & HIV Data Archive Program (NAHDAP) has over 500 studies on its website that cover topics related to drug use, alcohol, addiction, HIV, tobacco, and more.

We will discuss why it is important to archive and share research, describe how to prepare data for deposit, and walk through how to submit your data and documentation with NAHDAP. The webinar will also cover the benefits of depositing data with ICPSR, including long-term preservation, curation, worldwide dissemination, bibliographic citations, and usage information.

Presenter: Amy Mehraban Pienta is a Research Scientist at ICPSR. She is also a research affiliate of the University of Michigan Center on the Demography of Aging and the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan. At ICPSR, she oversees collection development and directs several large data archiving projects. Pienta has studied women's retirement behavior, the joint retirement behavior of married couples, and the relationship between various social statuses and health. She directs the National Addiction and HIV Data Archive Program funded by NIDA and the Archive of Disability Data to Enable Policy research funded by NIH.

The US charitable food system is a network of food banks, food pantries, and meal programs that distributes billions of pounds of food to households experiencing food insecurity. Historically, the primary metric of success within this system was the number of pounds of food distributed, with limited attention to nutritional quality. However, in recognition of the high rates of diet-related illnesses among the people receiving this food, there is a growing movement to measure nutritional quality and promote healthier options. This presentation will describe efforts at the national, state, local, and community levels to measure and encourage the distribution of healthier foods, as well as research strategies to evaluate the impact of these changes. Finally, lessons learned and friendly advice for new researchers interested in this topic will be shared.

Please join us for a live-streamed discussion with Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny as he meets with International Institute/WCEE Distinguished Fellow Yevgenia Albats and students in her course, Political Science 489, "Why Nations Choose Autocrats: Authoritarian Backsliding in Post-Communist Countries."

Alexey Navalny is a Russian politician, lawyer, and founder of the Anti-Corruption Foundation. In 2017, he campaigned to be a candidate in the Russian presidential election but was banned by authorities from running over trumped-up charges of embezzlement. His YouTube channel has more than 3 million followers, and one of his investigative videos, "Don't Call Him Dimon," has over 33 million views. He continues to be one of the most prominent critics of corruption and Vladimir Putin.

Dr. Yevgenia M. Albats is a Russian investigative journalist, political scientist, author, radio host, and visiting U-M professor. Since 2007, she has served as Political Editor and is now Editor-in-Chief and CEO of “The New Times,” a Moscow-based, Russian-language independent political weekly. Since 2004, Dr. Albats has hosted “Absolute Albats,” a talk show on “Echo Moskvy." She graduated from Moscow State University and received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Harvard University. She has been a member of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) since its founding in 1996. Albats taught at Yale from 2003 to 2004 and was also a full-time professor at the Moscow Higher School of Economics, where she taught institutional theory of the state and bureaucracy until her courses were canceled at the request of top Kremlin officials in 2011. Albats is the author of four books, including one on the history of the Russian political police, the KGB. Yevgenia Albats is the inaugural International Institute Distinguished Faculty Fellow for 2019-2020 in partnership with the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia at the University of Michigan.

Live event canceled: To limit the potential spread of respiratory viruses and safeguard those at highest risk of catching COVID-19, the University of Michigan has canceled all live events with estimated attendance of over 100 people.

As a result, live Penny Stamps Speaker Series events will not take place as scheduled. When possible, our weekly presentations will be available online: video presentations will be announced via email and on the Stamps website (https://stamps.umich.edu/stamps).

New York-based artist Abigail DeVille creates immersive works and installations designed to bring attention to forgotten stories, such as with the sculpture she built on the site of a former African American burial ground in Harlem. With family roots reaching back at least two generations, DeVille’s work about New York City is both personal and political. Acting as an archaeologist, DeVille collects and reallocates found materials to give physical presence to unspoken stories and forgotten pasts. Her work often focuses around themes of displacement, migration, marginalization, and cultural invisibility. As an extension of her installation practice, DeVille also designs sets for theatrical productions, including the Stratford Festival in Canada and Harlem Stage. Her work is part of some of the most prestigious collections in the world and has been exhibited internationally, including at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York; the Pinchuk Art Centre in Ukraine; the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York; and the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. An honors fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, a Creative Capital grantee, and an OBIE Award for Design recipient, DeVille is currently in residence at the American Academy in Rome.

Co-presented with the U-M Institute for Humanities, presenting No Space Hidden (Under Heaven), an exhibition of work by Abigail DeVille, on view at the IH Gallery April 1–May 7, 2020. There will be an exhibition reception at the IH Gallery following this event. Additional support for this speaker series event from the University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA).

Organized By: University Students Against Rape/Take Back The Night (USAR/TBTN)

University Students Against Rape, Standing Tough Against Rape Society, and Literati Bookstore are delighted to welcome Jaclyn Friedman to the downtown branch of the Ann Arbor District Library for a reading and signing in support of her latest publication, Believe Me: How Trusting Women Can Change the World. This event is free and open to the public. A Q&A and book signing will follow the reading.

About the book:

In Believe Me, contributors ask and answer the crucial question: What would happen if we didn’t just believe women, but acted as though they matter? If we take women’s experiences of online harassment seriously, it will transform the internet. If we listen to and center survivors, we could revolutionize our systems of justice. If we believe Black women when they talk about pain, we will save countless lives. With contributions from many of the most important voices in feminism today, Believe Me is an essential roadmap for the #MeToo era and beyond.

Jaclyn Friedman is a writer, educator and activist, and creator of four books Yes Means Yes: Visions of Female Sexual Power and a World Without Rape (one of Publishers’ Weekly’s Top 100 Books of 2009), What You Really Want: The Smart Girl’s Shame-Free Guide to Sex & Safety, Unscrewed: Women, Sex, Power and How to Stop Letting the System Screw Us All, and her latest, Believe Me: How Trusting Women Can Change the World. Her podcast, also called, Unscrewed, is paving new paths to sexual liberation, and was named one of the Best Sex Podcasts by both Marie Claire and Esquire.

This illustrated lecture explores the power of African art through the prism of speaker Nii Quarcoopome’s personal experience. It offers insights into the language of African art by examining its materials, imagery, and symbolic functions. He will also share his changing perspectives about African art over time, from my childhood in Africa to his current role as an American museum professional, to the challenges posed by modernity, globalization, and the ongoing debate about restitution of African artifacts.

Dr. Nii Quarcoopome holds a doctorate in art history from the University of California, Los Angeles. He joined the Detroit Institute of Arts in 2002 as Curator of African Art and department head for Africa, Oceania, and Indigenous Americas. He has directed and contributed to successful African gallery reinstallations at several major museums and boasts the American Association of Museums’ highest honors for his 2010 groundbreaking exhibition Through African Eyes: The European in African Art, 1500-Present.

This is the last of a six-lecture series. The next series will start April 16, 2020. The subject is: Money,Trade and Power – What Makes the World go ‘Round.

Live Event Cancelled - CREES 60th Anniversary/Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series. Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies

We unfortunately had to postpone the visit of Gluklya, the CREES 60th Anniversary/Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series speaker, due to COVID-19. We are working to reschedule her campus visit, but in the meantime, enjoy this interview which was recently conducted by our alumna Dianne Beal (BA REES '79), curator and art advisor of Galerie Blue Square: https://youtu.be/QHO-gCuWQjY.

Gluklya (Natalia Pershina-Yakimanskaya) is a visual and performance artist. Her manifesto states: “The place of the artist is on the side of the weak.” She uses clothing, installations, video, participatory projects, text, and research to develop a concept of fragility. For Gluklya, fragility is interpreted not as “delicate beauty” but as “invisible strength.” Her work explores topics of social exclusion, untapped intuitive knowledge, mind-body connections, violation of human rights, and stereotypes. Considered a pioneer of Russian performance art, Gluklya is a co-founder of the Factory of Found Clothes (FFC) and the group Chto Delat (What is to be done?). In 2012, FFC became the Utopian Unemployment Union, a project that unites art, social science, and progressive pedagogy to give people from all social backgrounds an opportunity to make art together. Today, the artist participates in many international shows including the 56th edition of the Venice Biennale (2015) and Positions #4 at the Van Abbemuseum in the Netherlands (2018-19). She has been awarded numerous art prizes and grants, including a fellowship from the Joseph Brodsky Fellowship Memorial Fund in 2014 and support from the Mondriaan Fund for recent projects.

Presented in partnership with the Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series.

When Arlo takes the stage, prepare to feel every heart in the room begin to crumble under the weight of honesty and emotion in McKinley’s lyrics. He's been on the mission of writing truthful and honest songs since his self titled release Arlo McKinley & The Lonesome Sound (2014).

Arlo's songwriting crosses genres of country-folk/rock with gobs of soul and deep and profound introspection. Being billed alongside musicians such as Tyler Childers, John Moreland, Jason Isbell, Justin Townes Earle and many others have helped Arlo McKinley get his name outside his hometown of Cincinnati and has gained him fans across the US & Europe.

Arlo’s sophomore album is sure to continue cementing him as a one of the important voices in American music that speak to love, struggle, loss & redemption.

Title:
A Summary of Operations Research and Industrial Engineering Tools for Fighting COVID-19

Abstract:
Operations Research (OR) and Industrial Engineering (IE) approaches are widely used in industry and play important roles in improving the design and operations of many standard corporate activities such as supply chain management, job/staff scheduling, healthcare, mobility and transportation systems, energy systems, facility location, and resource allocation. In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, policymakers, companies, community workers and individual households have been designing new systems and procedures to fight the virus. Many problems related to optimizing these systems and their operations can be tackled by extending the traditional OR and IE approaches with new objectives, constraints, and input data. The purpose of this talk is to summarize potential scenarios one may encounter during the prevention, disease control, intervention and recovery phases during COVID-19 outbreaks, and point out the OR and IE models that can be applied for solving the related problems. Using these techniques, policymakers can better prepare for rare but catastrophic events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can better inform the public to perform “social distancing”, can better utilize resources and ensure medical supplies during the outbreak, and can improve the quality of life and work to mitigate economic losses. This talk is based on a recent article: http://www-personal.umich.edu/~siqian/docs/or-ie-fighting-covid19_v1.pdf

Bio:
Siqian Shen is an Associate Professor of Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan and also serves as an Associate Director in the Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery & Engineering (MICDE). She obtained a B.S. degree from Tsinghua University in 2007 and Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 2011. Her theoretical research interests are in integer programming, stochastic/robust optimization, and network optimization. Applications include optimization and risk analysis of energy, healthcare, cloud computing, and transportation systems. She is a recipient of the IIE Pritsker Doctoral Dissertation Award (1st Place), INFORMS IBM Smarter Planet Innovation Faculty Award, and Department of Energy (DoE) Early Career Award. Prof. Shen serves in the editorial board of journals like IISE Transactions, Networks, Service Science, INFORMS Journal on Computing. Rose Cousins just might be Nova Scotia's answer to Iris DeMent, or even to Kate Wolf. Says Lifestyle Nova Scotia: "Cousins writes songs strong on story, melody, and honest observations ... that demand an unaffected but beautiful voice." Her album "We Have Made a Spark" took home a Canadian Juno Award along with many other awards, including a spot on NPR's Top 10 Americana & Folk Albums list. Rose spends part of her time in Boston, where she's found strong support from the city's vibrant songwriting community, but she maintains strong ties to her Canadian roots. Rooted in authenticity and conviction of voice, the songs of Rose Cousins make you feel as though she sings for you, about your life. "We develop patterns that keep us from moving forward," Rose says. "It takes a deep breath and a bucket of courage to face the uncomfortable, painful things we work so hard to avoid. Reward comes from recognizing the obstacle exists and pushing through fear." She comes to Michigan with a new album, "Bravado."

“There is a certain tentativeness to the 14-year-old Eun-hee (Ji-hu Park) in writer-director Bora Kim’s sure-handed feature debut “House of Hummingbird,” a tender yet somewhat underpowered coming-of-age film set in the Seoul of 1994. Lonely, reserved, and stuck in a dysfunctional household among her frequently quarrelling parents (Seung-Yeon Lee and In-gi Jeong), her troublemaking sister Su-hee (Su-yeon Park), and bully of a brother Dae-hoon (Sang-yeon Sohn), eighth-grader Eun-hee seems to move through life involuntarily, like a bird with a pair of broken wings. And yet, she still copes with routine neglect behind a youthful shield of resilience — Kim slowly lays bare Eun-hee’s toughened spirit from a minimalist and acutely feminine perspective.” –TOMRIS LAFFLY, Variety

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) is a technique that can help individuals experiencing stress resulting from chronic physical and psychological conditions. Research has demonstrated MSBR has contributed to improved behavioral outcomes including better sleep, lower blood pressure, and fewer worries! This workshop is for clinicians who are interested in learning more about teaching MBSR or in seeking MBSR teacher certification.

This intense, interactive teacher training includes both experiencing sessions of MBSR and working in small groups to begin practicing teaching the MBSR program. Participants will strengthen their skills to embody a non-judgmental, present-moment focus with an understanding of how this supports and strengthens such mind states as kindness, compassion and equanimity. Daily meditation practice, yoga/mindful movement, and periods of silence are also part of the curriculum.

This training workshop is led by skilled mindfulness teacher trainers who are also experienced clinicians, mindfulness teachers, and retreat leaders. Join the Psych Clinic and Susan Woods, LCSW, a leader in Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction therapy, for this MBSR training workshop!

On April 22, 2020, our world celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual event meant to bring people together from across the world in protest, solidarity, and conversation about how we can collectively fight for a sustainable and just world. In this Teach-Out, you will explore the origins of Earth Day 1970 with student activists from Environmental Action for Survival (ENACT), an environmental student group from the University of Michigan, whose efforts led to a massive “Teach-In on the Environment” which drew tens of thousands of people. This was just one of many teach-in events that took place in 1970 and kicked-off Earth Day as we know it.

50 years later, you are invited to this “Teach-Out” to engage in an intergenerational and interdisciplinary conversion about what sustainability means across different sectors, disciplines, and lived experiences. You will explore themes including global sustainability efforts, climate change, environmental justice, and more, to inspire you to take action on Earth Day and beyond. Together, we will collectively develop visions for a sustainable, just, and peaceful world.

Write-Togethers will be running remotely every Monday on BlueJeans. The primary objective of the Write-Together—to provide a supportive community environment where you can make progress on larger writing projects—does not change in the move from in-person to remote. As we start redefining what our daily lives look like, having a virtual community in place to hold yourself accountable to your larger writing goals can be a potentially anchoring structure. If you are able to join us, we will look forward to touching base with you about your writing goals, and holding space for writing assistance as needed.
You can join the BlueJeans meeting by clicking on the link below, or dialing in by phone. This is set up to be a chat-only meeting, so that we don’t overtax the server, though we may enable cameras at later meetings if participants prefer it.

Write-Together sessions provide structure, space, and time for graduate writers working on writing at any stage, from papers to theses to journal articles to dissertations and more. Write-Together sessions bring graduate writers into a common quiet space to work. We will periodically offer helpful handouts on a range of writing and work productivity topics, and a Sweetland representative will also be on-site to answer any brief writing questions you may have. Breakfast refreshments will be provided.

Designed to prepare young leaders to deepen understanding between China and the rest of the world, Schwarzman Scholars is the first scholarship created to respond to the geopolitical landscape of the 21st Century. Whether in politics, business or science, the success of future leaders around the world will depend upon an understanding of China’s role in global trends.

With the inaugural class enrolled in 2016, the program gives the world’s best and brightest students the opportunity to develop their leadership skills and professional networks through a one-year Master’s Degree at Tsinghua University in Beijing – one of China’s most prestigious universities. Students pursue a Masters in Global Affairs, working with an academic advisor to design an academic plan that best suits his or her academic and professional goals.

Students spend a year immersed in an international community of thinkers, innovators and senior leaders in business, politics and society. In an environment of intellectual engagement, professional development and cultural exchange, they learn from one another and pursue their academic disciplines while building their leadership capacities.

This experience will expand students’ understanding of the world and create a growing network of global leaders that will build strong ties between China and the rest of the world.

For those ready to make their mark on the world, Schwarzman Scholars represents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Learn more by attending our online information session!

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Mary A. Rackham Institute

THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED: We are working on a reschedule date.

The bipartisan 2018 Farm Bill supports the one in four jobs related to food and agriculture in Michigan. It provides five years of certainty for Michigan’s farmers, fuel opportunity in rural communities and grow small businesses. It continues historic investments in land, water and wildlife conservation, will grow Michigan local food economies, and will support families working hard to make ends meet.

There is no single site in the community that tells its story with more drama than the cemetery. It is the one place where we can trace our ‘roots’ in what is becoming a ‘rootless’ society. There are pioneers, the rich and famous lying side by side with the poor and not so famous. There are scoundrels and saints, infants and centenarians. Each gravestone has a story to tell. Traveling from Alaska to Key West, from Hawaii to Canada, from New Zealand to England we have found examples of the myriad of burial customs and examples of symbolism on gravestones. Instructor Rochelle Balkam wishes to encourage communities to focus on one of their most significant resources - the local cemetery.

As part of the CEW+Inspire initiative, CEW+ holds mindful meditation sits virtually on Wednesdays at 12:15.

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times. Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Free and open to all levels of practice.

Organized By: Center for Academic Innovation

Title:
Network Revenue Management with Online Inverse Batch Gradient Descent Method

Abstract:
We consider a general class of price-based network revenue management problems that a firm aims to maximize revenue from multiple products produced with multiple types of resources endowed with limited inventory over a finite selling season. A salient feature of our problem is that the firm does not know the underlying demand function that maps prices to demand rate, which must be learned from sales data. It is well known that for almost all classes of demand functions, the revenue rate function is not concave in the products' prices but is concave in products' market shares (or price-controlled demand rates). This creates challenges in adopting any stochastic gradient descent based methods in the price space. We propose a novel nonparametric learning algorithm termed online inverse batch gradient descent (IGD) algorithm. For the large scale systems wherein all resources' inventories and the length of the horizon are proportionally scaled by a parameter $k$, we establish a dimension-independent regret bound of $O( k^{4/5} \log k)$. This result is independent of the number of products and resources and works for a continuum action-set prices and the demand functions that are only once differentiable. Our result guarantees the efficacy of both algorithms in the high dimensional systems where the number of products or resources is large and the prices are continuous. (This is a joint work with Dr. Yiwei Chen.)

This workshop will not be held in person but instead will be offered using Zoom technology. Please be sure to check your email the morning of the online workshop for the link to participate in the program.
Have you often succeeded at an academic task even though you were afraid you wouldn’t do well? Do you dread others evaluating your work? Do you tend to remember incidents when you haven’t done your best more than those when you have? Thoughts such as these are the hallmark of imposter syndrome thinking. Imposter syndrome thinking can be compounded for those from underrepresented populations who may also be subject to discrimination and situations that prime stereotype threat. This interactive session will share insights from the scholarship on imposter syndrome and related psychological constructs—including stereotype threat and performance anxiety—and provide strategies for overcoming imposter syndrome.

Njideka Akunyili Crosby, a 2017 MacArthur Genius Grant recipient, is a Nigerian-born visual artist working in Los Angeles. Crosby uses collage and photo transfer-based paintings to expose and explore moments of collision, moments of unity, and moments of hybridity found in cross-cultural relationships and in cultures of colonization. Crosby’s work is both personal and universal, as she draws upon her lived experience with interracial marriage, immigration, and dual ideas of home, and the deep traces of colonization in Nigeria. In 2019, Crosby was a participant in the Venice Biennale 58th International Art Exhibition, May You Live in Interesting Times, curated by Ralph Rugoff. Recent solo exhibitions include Njideka Akunyili Crosby: The Beautyful Ones at the National Portrait Gallery in London and Counterparts, which debuted at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 2017 before traveling to the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, in 2018. She received an honorary doctorate of art from Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania in 2019 and was named among the Financial Times’ “Women of the Year” in 2016.

Supported by University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA).

The Moradokmai Theatre Community of Thailand

A dramatization of the story of Nonthok, one of the most beloved episodes from the Thai epic, the Ramakien. Nonthok serves as foot-washer to the celestial angels, who tease him about his duties. He gets a magic finger from the higher God to protect himself, but ends up misusing it. The moral of the story: if everyone does their duty, the world will be safe and sound.

The Moradokmai Theatre Community is affiliated with a home school by the same name; the group is touring the U.S. to raise awareness of the needs of the elderly and disabled in its community.

Organized by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies; cosponsored by the Center for World Performance Studies and the Department of Asian Languages and Culture.

***Please note that events at AADL are currently postponed indefinitely.***

The Great Lakes region contains some of Earth’s oldest rocks as well as some of its youngest geologic features. Great Lakes Rocks: 4 Billion Years of Geologic History in the Great Lakes Region tells this 4 billion-year history starting with the hills, lakes and rivers that we see today and moving back in time through the advance and retreat of the glaciers, the formation of tropical seas and reefs, the rifting that almost split North America into two parts, and ending with the volcanism and mountain building that made one of Earth’s earliest continents. This history includes strange iron-rich and salt-rich oceans, an immense meteorite impact, a super-giant lava flow, and many ore deposits that lured early European settlers into the area. It also helps us predict the geologic future of the Great Lakes region, which will likely include earthquakes, meteorite impacts, changes in our rivers, lakes, and waterfalls and, most of all, in our climate. At this event, Stephen Kesler will showcase rock samples from around the Great Lakes.

Steve Kesler earned a PhD in geology from Stanford University and has taught at Louisiana State University, University of Toronto, Instituto de Recursos Norenovables (Mexico) and University of Michigan. Since joining U-M in 1977, he and many students have gone on field trips over most of the Great Lakes region. In addition to Great Lakes Rocks, he has co-authored several other recent books including Mineral Resources, Economics and the Environment; Metals and Society; and Future Global Mineral Resources.

Objectives
We have developed a novel anti-vascular technique, termed photo-mediated ultrasound therapy (PUT), which utilizes nanosecond duration laser pulses synchronized with ultrasound bursts to remove microvasculature through cavitation. The objective of the current study is to explore the potential of PUT in removing cutaneous microvessels.

Methods
The auricular blood vessels of two New Zealand white rabbits were treated by PUT with a peak negative ultrasound pressure of 0.45 MPa at 0.5 MHz, and a laser fluence of 0.056 J/cm2 at 1064 nm for 10 minutes. Blood perfusion in the treated area was measured by a commercial laser speckle imaging (LSI) system before and immediately after treatment, as well as at one hour, three days, two weeks, and four weeks post treatment. Perfusion rates of 38 individual vessels from 4 rabbit ears were tracked during this time period for longitudinal assessment.

Results
The measured perfusion rates of the vessels in the treated areas, as quantified by the relative change in perfusion rate (RCPR), showed a statistically significant decrease for all time points post treatment (p<0.001). The mean decrease in perfusion is 50.79% immediately after treatment and is 32.14% at four weeks post treatment. Immediately after treatment, the perfusion rate decreased rapidly. Following this, there was a partial recovery in perfusion rate up to 3 days post treatment, then followed by a plateau in the perfusion from 3 days to 4 weeks.

Conclusions
The study demonstrated that a single PUT treatment could significantly reduce blood perfusion by 32.14% in the skin for up to 4 weeks. With unique advantages such as low laser fluence as compared with photothermolysis and agent-free treatment as compared with PDT, PUT holds potential to be developed into a new tool for the treatment of microvessels in the skin.

Nuclear Energy Grand Challenge Pitch Competition (April 10, 2020 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72087 72087-17937815@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 10, 2020 1:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences

Nuclear power is an essential tool in the fight against climate change—producing massive amounts of energy without any greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, deploying nuclear power at scale worldwide represents the most efficient path to deep decarbonization. Despite this potential, the nuclear power industry is hindered by social, political, and economic challenges in many parts of the world. The Nuclear Energy Grand Challenge represents a series of prize competitions organized by the Energy Impact Center to spur a new approach to nuclear power deployment on a time frame that can make a difference.

The first prize competition, Reimagining Nuclear Waste, is taking place over the Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 semesters in partnership with the University of Michigan. It was designed to advance the clean energy economy by engaging collegiate innovators and entrepreneurs to tackle one of the most unique challenges facing the nuclear energy industry—the perception of nuclear waste.

The nuclear industry has historically responded to calls against its “waste” by offering solutions around concentrating, storing indefinitely, and separating it from humans, which only further—albeit counterintuitively—deepens the public’s distrust, misunderstanding, and wariness of the energy source at large. This prize competition represents the first of several efforts to flip the script on the byproducts of nuclear energy generation, by identifying new commercial opportunities to transform nuclear “waste” from a liability into an asset.

Interdisciplinary student teams were challenged to create technical business plan proposals to productize nuclear waste and incentivize the creation of new markets/uses that re-imagine how spent nuclear fuel can be utilized. At this public event, the teams will present their proposals to a panel of judges.

CANCELLED - Cedric Burnside (April 10, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72016 72016-17914155@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 10, 2020 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Cedric Burnside needs to cancel the April 10th performance and looks forward to returning to The Ark later this year to follow up on an incredible performance at Folk Fest. All ticket holders will receive a refund.

"My school was a juke joint, from a kid till I was grown, and blues is really all I ever known," sings Cedric Burnside on his new album, "Benton County Relic." And it's no wonder. The 39-year-old, though he's just back from a European tour, still lives on several acres not far from the Holly Springs, Mississippi, home where he was raised by "Big Daddy," his grandfather, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside, whom Cedric famously played with, just as his own father, drummer Calvin Jackson, did. Cedric was literally born to the blues, more specifically, the rhythmically unorthodox Hill country variant that emerged from Mississippi, where he grew up surrounded (and influenced) by Junior Kimbrough, Jessie May Hemphill, and Otha Turner, as well as Delta musicians T-Model Ford and Paul "Wine" Jones. Cedric has played and recorded with the North Mississippi Allstars (Luther Dickinson gave him his first electric guitar), Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, Bobby Rush, Hubert Sumlin, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears ,and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. But beyond that, he writes from personal experience, and he's bringing traditional blues to a new generation.

Mapache consists of Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci. Born and raised in Glendale, California, the duo offers breathtaking harmonies and a heartfelt sound that they dub cosmic West Coast Pop Americana. We make music that’s reflective of the landscape we grew up with in southern California,” says Clay. "It’s a big sweep of all the really rich influences you encounter around here: folk and psychedelic and country and Latin and rock and cowboy and Hawaiian. We’re drawing from a really deep well." Their sound is not an exercise in pop nostalgia, but rather a distinctly independent link in a chain that stretches far behind and ahead of them. Mapache comes to Michigan with a brand new release, "From Liberty Street."

Chair: Dr. Xueding Wang

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is an emerging biomedical imaging modality that combines optical and ultrasound imaging technologies. PA imaging relies on the absorption of electromagnetic energy (usually in the form of visible or near-infrared light) leading to the generation of acoustic waves by thermoelastic expansion, which can be detected with an ultrasound detector. PA imaging can be used to detect endogenous chromophores such as deoxyhemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin, or can be used together with external nanosensors for added functionality. The former is used to measure things like blood oxygenation, while the latter opens up many possibilities for PA imaging, limited only to the availability of optical nanosensors. In this dissertation, I employ the use of PA nanosensors for contrast enhancement and molecular imaging in in vivo small animal cancer models.

In the first section, I introduce a novel PA background reduction technique called the transient triplet differential (TTD) method. The TTD method exploits the fact that phosphorescent dyes possess a triplet state with a unique red-shifted absorption wavelength, distinct from its ordinary singlet state absorption profile. By pumping these dyes into the triplet state and comparing the signal to the unpumped dyes, a differential signal can be obtained which solely originates from these dyes. Since intrinsic chromophores of biological tissue are not able to undergo intersystem crossing and enter the triplet state, the TTD method can facilitate “true” background free molecular imaging by excluding the signals from every other chromophore outside the phosphorescent dye. Here, I demonstrate up to an order of magnitude better sensitivity of the TTD method compared to other existing contrast enhancement techniques in both in vitro experiments and in vivo cancer models.

In the second section, I explore the use of a nanoparticle formulation of a repurposed FDA-approved drug called clofazimine for diagnosis of prostate cancer. Clofazimine nanoparticles have a high optical absorbance at 495 nm and has been known to specifically accumulate in macrophages as they form stable crystal-like inclusions once they are uptaken by macrophages. Due to the presence of tumor associated macrophages, it is expected that clofazimine would accumulate in much higher quantities in the cancerous prostate compared to normal prostates. Here, I show that there was indeed a significantly higher accumulation of clofazimine nanoparticles in cancerous prostates compared to normal prostates in a transgenic mouse model, which was detectable both using histology and ex vivo PA imaging.

In the third and final section, I explore the use of a potassium (K+) nanosensor together with PA imaging in measuring the in vivo K+ distribution in the tumor microenvironment (TME). K+ is the most abundant ion in the body and has recently been shown to be at a significantly higher concentration in the tumor. The reported 5-10 fold elevation (25-50 mM compared to 5 mM) in the tumor has been shown to inhibit immune cell efficacy, and thus immunotherapy. Despite the abundance and importance of K+ in the body, few ways exist to measure it in vivo. In this study, a solvatochromic dye K+ nanoparticle (SDKNP) was used together with PA imaging to quantitatively measure the in vivo distribution of K+ in the TME. Significantly elevated K+ levels were found in the TME, with an average concentration of approximately 29 mM, matching the values found by the previous study. The results were then verified using mass spectrometry.

Join us for a monthly Taizé Prayer Service with First Pres Ann Arbor, now held virtually.

What is a Taizé Service?

This style of worship was developed at Taizé, a monastic community located in Taizé, France, founded in the 1940’s by a Swiss named Roger Louis Schütz-Marsauche or Brother Roger. The “brothers” of the community have taken a vow of celibacy and are committed to a lifetime of simplicity, service, and community. There is an ecumenical emphasis at Taizé, which says the community “wants its life to be a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and between separated peoples.”

A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, a period of silence, liturgical readings, and icons. There is no preaching. The style of prayer practiced at Taizé has attracted many worshipers from around the globe and from many different denominations. The prayers consist of “short chants, repeated again and again,” according to an introduction in a Taizé songbook. “The words are sung over many times.”

Taizé Services have been a practice of worshipping here at First Pres on Ash Wednesday. All are welcome!

The John Jorgenson Band, or J2B2 for short, is a bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary, award-winning musicians—John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen (The Dillards, Desert Rose Band) on banjo, acoustic guitar, and vocals; Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs' Kentucky Thunder) on bass; and Patrick Sauber ("A Mighty Wind") on acoustic guitar and vocals—delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band's high-powered live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship, incomparable songwriting, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock), and seasoned showmanship. This is the "high lonesome sound" of American roots music at its finest.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Academic Innovation

We hope you will tune into the online event to view the research projects being showcased! The website will be open to watch the videos, and there will be an opportunity to ask the researchers questions through our slack channel April 13th - April 19th. Our slack link is: cogscicommunity.slack.com. The channel for discussion is #research_showcase_discussion_Let us know if you have any questions regarding using slack.

We hope you’re all staying safe and healthy!
