The Great Lakes region contains some of Earth’s oldest rocks as well as some of its youngest geologic features. Great Lakes Rocks: 4 Billion Years of Geologic History in the Great Lakes Region tells this 4 billion-year history starting with the hills, lakes and rivers that we see today and moving back in time through the advance and retreat of the glaciers, the formation of tropical seas and reefs, the rifting that almost split North America into two parts, and ending with the volcanism and mountain building that made one of Earth’s earliest continents. This history includes strange iron-rich and salt-rich oceans, an immense meteorite impact, a super-giant lava flow, and many ore deposits that lured early European settlers into the area. It also helps us predict the geologic future of the Great Lakes region, which will likely include earthquakes, meteorite impacts, changes in our rivers, lakes, and waterfalls and, most of all, in our climate. At this event, Stephen Kesler will showcase rock samples from around the Great Lakes.

Steve Kesler earned a PhD in geology from Stanford University and has taught at Louisiana State University, University of Toronto, Instituto de Recursos Norenovables (Mexico) and University of Michigan. Since joining U-M in 1977, he and many students have gone on field trips over most of the Great Lakes region. In addition to Great Lakes Rocks, he has co-authored several other recent books including Mineral Resources, Economics and the Environment; Metals and Society; and Future Global Mineral Resources.

On April 22, 2020, our world celebrates the 50th anniversary of Earth Day, an annual event meant to bring people together from across the world in protest, solidarity, and conversation about how we can collectively fight for a sustainable and just world. In this Teach-Out, you will explore the origins of Earth Day 1970 with student activists from Environmental Action for Survival (ENACT), an environmental student group from the University of Michigan, whose efforts led to a massive “Teach-In on the Environment” which drew tens of thousands of people. This was just one of many teach-in events that took place in 1970 and kicked-off Earth Day as we know it.

50 years later, you are invited to this “Teach-Out” to engage in an intergenerational and interdisciplinary conversion about what sustainability means across different sectors, disciplines, and lived experiences. You will explore themes including global sustainability efforts, climate change, environmental justice, and more, to inspire you to take action on Earth Day and beyond. Together, we will collectively develop visions for a sustainable, just, and peaceful world.

Objectives
We have developed a novel anti-vascular technique, termed photo-mediated ultrasound therapy (PUT), which utilizes nanosecond duration laser pulses synchronized with ultrasound bursts to remove microvasculature through cavitation. The objective of the current study is to explore the potential of PUT in removing cutaneous microvessels.

Methods
The auricular blood vessels of two New Zealand white rabbits were treated by PUT with a peak negative ultrasound pressure of 0.45 MPa at 0.5 MHz, and a laser fluence of 0.056 J/cm2 at 1064 nm for 10 minutes. Blood perfusion in the treated area was measured by a commercial laser speckle imaging (LSI) system before and immediately after treatment, as well as at one hour, three days, two weeks, and four weeks post treatment. Perfusion rates of 38 individual vessels from 4 rabbit ears were tracked during this time period for longitudinal assessment.

Results
The measured perfusion rates of the vessels in the treated areas, as quantified by the relative change in perfusion rate (RCPR), showed a statistically significant decrease for all time points post treatment (p<0.001). The mean decrease in perfusion is 50.79% immediately after treatment and is 32.14% at four weeks post treatment. Immediately after treatment, the perfusion rate decreased rapidly. Following this, there was a partial recovery in perfusion rate up to 3 days post treatment, then followed by a plateau in the perfusion from 3 days to 4 weeks.

Conclusions
The study demonstrated that a single PUT treatment could significantly reduce blood perfusion by 32.14% in the skin for up to 4 weeks. With unique advantages such as low laser fluence as compared with photothermolysis and agent-free treatment as compared with PDT, PUT holds potential to be developed into a new tool for the treatment of microvessels in the skin.

Nuclear Energy Grand Challenge Pitch Competition (April 10, 2020 1:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72087 72087-17937815@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 10, 2020 1:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences

Nuclear power is an essential tool in the fight against climate change—producing massive amounts of energy without any greenhouse gas emissions. In fact, deploying nuclear power at scale worldwide represents the most efficient path to deep decarbonization. Despite this potential, the nuclear power industry is hindered by social, political, and economic challenges in many parts of the world. The Nuclear Energy Grand Challenge represents a series of prize competitions organized by the Energy Impact Center to spur a new approach to nuclear power deployment on a time frame that can make a difference.

The first prize competition, Reimagining Nuclear Waste, is taking place over the Fall 2019 and Winter 2020 semesters in partnership with the University of Michigan. It was designed to advance the clean energy economy by engaging collegiate innovators and entrepreneurs to tackle one of the most unique challenges facing the nuclear energy industry—the perception of nuclear waste.

The nuclear industry has historically responded to calls against its “waste” by offering solutions around concentrating, storing indefinitely, and separating it from humans, which only further—albeit counterintuitively—deepens the public’s distrust, misunderstanding, and wariness of the energy source at large. This prize competition represents the first of several efforts to flip the script on the byproducts of nuclear energy generation, by identifying new commercial opportunities to transform nuclear “waste” from a liability into an asset.

Interdisciplinary student teams were challenged to create technical business plan proposals to productize nuclear waste and incentivize the creation of new markets/uses that re-imagine how spent nuclear fuel can be utilized. At this public event, the teams will present their proposals to a panel of judges.

Due to an unforeseen scheduling conflict, Cedric Burnside needs to cancel the April 10th performance and looks forward to returning to The Ark later this year to follow up on an incredible performance at Folk Fest. All ticket holders will receive a refund.

"My school was a juke joint, from a kid till I was grown, and blues is really all I ever known," sings Cedric Burnside on his new album, "Benton County Relic." And it's no wonder. The 39-year-old, though he's just back from a European tour, still lives on several acres not far from the Holly Springs, Mississippi, home where he was raised by "Big Daddy," his grandfather, the late singer/songwriter/guitarist R.L. Burnside, whom Cedric famously played with, just as his own father, drummer Calvin Jackson, did. Cedric was literally born to the blues, more specifically, the rhythmically unorthodox Hill country variant that emerged from Mississippi, where he grew up surrounded (and influenced) by Junior Kimbrough, Jessie May Hemphill, and Otha Turner, as well as Delta musicians T-Model Ford and Paul "Wine" Jones. Cedric has played and recorded with the North Mississippi Allstars (Luther Dickinson gave him his first electric guitar), Widespread Panic, Jimmy Buffett, Bobby Rush, Hubert Sumlin, Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears ,and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. But beyond that, he writes from personal experience, and he's bringing traditional blues to a new generation.

Mapache consists of Clay Finch and Sam Blasucci. Born and raised in Glendale, California, the duo offers breathtaking harmonies and a heartfelt sound that they dub cosmic West Coast Pop Americana. We make music that’s reflective of the landscape we grew up with in southern California,” says Clay. "It’s a big sweep of all the really rich influences you encounter around here: folk and psychedelic and country and Latin and rock and cowboy and Hawaiian. We’re drawing from a really deep well." Their sound is not an exercise in pop nostalgia, but rather a distinctly independent link in a chain that stretches far behind and ahead of them. Mapache comes to Michigan with a brand new release, "From Liberty Street."

You will explore themes including global sustainability efforts, climate change, environmental justice, and more, to inspire you to take action on Earth Day and beyond. Together, we will collectively develop visions for a sustainable, just, and peaceful world.

Hello everyone!

Are you interested in viewing research related to cognitive science or other related fields? We invite you to attend this year’s Cognitive Science Colloquium!

The Cognitive Science Community is excited to announce that we’ll be hosting our 4th annual colloquium online!  In light of COVID-19 and social distancing, we will not be holding an in-person Colloquium this year. Instead, we will be moving the showcase to an online format which will be open for viewing April 13th - April 19th.

We hope you will tune into the online event to view the research projects being showcased! The website will be open to watch the videos, and there will be an opportunity to ask the researchers questions through our slack channel April 13th - April 19th. Our slack link is: cogscicommunity.slack.com. The channel for discussion is #research_showcase_discussion_Let us know if you have any questions regarding using slack.

We hope you’re all staying safe and healthy!

Best,
Cognitive Science Community

Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Write-Togethers will be running remotely every Monday on BlueJeans. The primary objective of the Write-Together—to provide a supportive community environment where you can make progress on larger writing projects—does not change in the move from in-person to remote. As we start redefining what our daily lives look like, having a virtual community in place to hold yourself accountable to your larger writing goals can be a potentially anchoring structure. If you are able to join us, we will look forward to touching base with you about your writing goals, and holding space for writing assistance as needed.
You can join the BlueJeans meeting by clicking on the link below, or dialing in by phone. This is set up to be a chat-only meeting, so that we don’t overtax the server, though we may enable cameras at later meetings if participants prefer it.

Write-Together sessions provide structure, space, and time for graduate writers working on writing at any stage, from papers to theses to journal articles to dissertations and more. Write-Together sessions bring graduate writers into a common quiet space to work. We will periodically offer helpful handouts on a range of writing and work productivity topics, and a Sweetland representative will also be on-site to answer any brief writing questions you may have. Breakfast refreshments will be provided.
Co-sponsored by the Rackham Graduate School and the Sweetland Center for Writing.

Self-massage is a safe, therapeutic hands-on approach to self-care that everybody can benefit from. Due to the intensity of our work, our muscles tend to be overused or misused. In this workshop, we will be focusing on releasing tension in the neck, upper shoulders, feet, and calves. You will need a mat, or a chair, loose attire, and curiosity of how the body will feel before and after.

This study group will read and discuss short stories by six writers from the past whose works are still today significant and powerful. All of the stories are available on the internet or in inexpensive editions that can be purchased from Amazon.

Photoacoustic (PA) imaging is an emerging biomedical imaging modality that combines optical and ultrasound imaging technologies. PA imaging relies on the absorption of electromagnetic energy (usually in the form of visible or near-infrared light) leading to the generation of acoustic waves by thermoelastic expansion, which can be detected with an ultrasound detector. PA imaging can be used to detect endogenous chromophores such as deoxyhemoglobin and oxyhemoglobin, or can be used together with external nanosensors for added functionality. The former is used to measure things like blood oxygenation, while the latter opens up many possibilities for PA imaging, limited only to the availability of optical nanosensors. In this dissertation, I employ the use of PA nanosensors for contrast enhancement and molecular imaging in in vivo small animal cancer models.

In the first section, I introduce a novel PA background reduction technique called the transient triplet differential (TTD) method. The TTD method exploits the fact that phosphorescent dyes possess a triplet state with a unique red-shifted absorption wavelength, distinct from its ordinary singlet state absorption profile. By pumping these dyes into the triplet state and comparing the signal to the unpumped dyes, a differential signal can be obtained which solely originates from these dyes. Since intrinsic chromophores of biological tissue are not able to undergo intersystem crossing and enter the triplet state, the TTD method can facilitate “true” background free molecular imaging by excluding the signals from every other chromophore outside the phosphorescent dye. Here, I demonstrate up to an order of magnitude better sensitivity of the TTD method compared to other existing contrast enhancement techniques in both in vitro experiments and in vivo cancer models.

In the second section, I explore the use of a nanoparticle formulation of a repurposed FDA-approved drug called clofazimine for diagnosis of prostate cancer. Clofazimine nanoparticles have a high optical absorbance at 495 nm and has been known to specifically accumulate in macrophages as they form stable crystal-like inclusions once they are uptaken by macrophages. Due to the presence of tumor associated macrophages, it is expected that clofazimine would accumulate in much higher quantities in the cancerous prostate compared to normal prostates. Here, I show that there was indeed a significantly higher accumulation of clofazimine nanoparticles in cancerous prostates compared to normal prostates in a transgenic mouse model, which was detectable both using histology and ex vivo PA imaging.

In the third and final section, I explore the use of a potassium (K+) nanosensor together with PA imaging in measuring the in vivo K+ distribution in the tumor microenvironment (TME). K+ is the most abundant ion in the body and has recently been shown to be at a significantly higher concentration in the tumor. The reported 5-10 fold elevation (25-50 mM compared to 5 mM) in the tumor has been shown to inhibit immune cell efficacy, and thus immunotherapy. Despite the abundance and importance of K+ in the body, few ways exist to measure it in vivo. In this study, a solvatochromic dye K+ nanoparticle (SDKNP) was used together with PA imaging to quantitatively measure the in vivo distribution of K+ in the TME. Significantly elevated K+ levels were found in the TME, with an average concentration of approximately 29 mM, matching the values found by the previous study. The results were then verified using mass spectrometry.

Join us for a monthly Taizé Prayer Service with First Pres Ann Arbor, now held virtually.

What is a Taizé Service?

This style of worship was developed at Taizé, a monastic community located in Taizé, France, founded in the 1940’s by a Swiss named Roger Louis Schütz-Marsauche or Brother Roger. The “brothers” of the community have taken a vow of celibacy and are committed to a lifetime of simplicity, service, and community. There is an ecumenical emphasis at Taizé, which says the community “wants its life to be a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and between separated peoples.”

A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, a period of silence, liturgical readings, and icons. There is no preaching. The style of prayer practiced at Taizé has attracted many worshipers from around the globe and from many different denominations. The prayers consist of “short chants, repeated again and again,” according to an introduction in a Taizé songbook. “The words are sung over many times.”

Taizé Services have been a practice of worshipping here at First Pres on Ash Wednesday. All are welcome!

The John Jorgenson Band, or J2B2 for short, is a bluegrass supergroup featuring four legendary, award-winning musicians—John Jorgenson on acoustic guitar, mandolin and vocals; Herb Pedersen (The Dillards, Desert Rose Band) on banjo, acoustic guitar, and vocals; Mark Fain (Ricky Skaggs' Kentucky Thunder) on bass; and Patrick Sauber ("A Mighty Wind") on acoustic guitar and vocals—delivering bluegrass like no one has ever heard it before. The band's high-powered live shows have received stellar reviews and have the bluegrass world buzzing. The four combine forces to form a spot-on union of impeccable musicianship, incomparable songwriting, incredible harmony vocals (a fresh twist combining bluegrass with elements of West Coast folk rock), and seasoned showmanship. This is the "high lonesome sound" of American roots music at its finest.

Best,

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times. Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

This is why the Hub is here to support you as you actively make decisions about your next steps and work to further your career goals.

Our team of coaches can work with you on creating a game plan, whether that’s developing virtual job search strategies, setting achievable goals for a gap year, exploring the possibility of grad school — or carving an alternative path that best serves your interests.

RSVP now to receive a short survey by email; this is an opportunity to share your pressing questions and concerns about post-grad plans. A coach will reach out shortly with carefully-crafted resources that will help answer these questions and provide must-have information. You’ll also have a chance to set up a one-on-one virtual coaching appointment for additional guidance and support.

A 2019–2020 Carillon Studio DEI initiative, Global Rings features student carillon compositions and arrangements of folk tunes, stories, and issues from around the world. In Global Rings, students and visiting carillonist Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra diversify the carillon repertoire, lift up marginalized and underrepresented voices, reveal injustices, broaden perspectives, build bridges, and welcome audience members from around the world.

Global Rings themes include First People tunes, African American spirituals, folk tunes from Taiwan, Korea, China, Nicaragua, Russia, and Japan; Hebrew songs and lullabies from Basque people, Armenia, and Venezuela; songs and stories of protest, climate change from the South African water crisis to the Jamaican earthquake, standing up against oppressive governments, trafficking and violence against women in Venezuela and India, a bluegrass song and a piano rag, a Jewish partisan song from the Holocaust, a piece telling the story of the lonely whale, Hertz 52, a piece influenced by the jaunty rhythms and close harmonies of Bulgarian choral music, and new compositions about global luminaries MLK Jr., Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, the Dalai Lama, and Toni Morrison.

Bring a picnic and enjoy the concert while sitting or strolling around the engineering campus, or take the Lurie elevator to the 3rd floor to see the global ringers close-up.

Organized By: Center for Academic Innovation

The promise of precision health is typically associated with the early detection of disease, and the identification of an individually tailored therapy to extend healthspan while also reducing costs. I will discuss our work on immune engineering, as the immune system is essential to health, and consequently immune dysregulation can lead to disease. Autoimmune disease has been increasing in prevalence for the past few decades, and results from the immune system attacking healthy tissues, such as in Type 1 Diabetes or Multiple Sclerosis. Current treatments typically involve suppressing the entire immune system, despite the immune system attacking specific proteins. Based on the function of the immune system, we have developed nanoparticles that re-program immune responses to specific antigens leading to tolerance to those antigens and leaving the remainder of the immune system intact. The nanoparticles maintain the antigen until internalization by immune cells, with subsequent presentation of the antigen coincident with down-regulation of the co-stimulatory factors and up-regulation of negative co-stimulators. In addition to reprogramming specific immune responses, a need exists for technologies that can detect autoimmune disease initiation prior to substantial destruction of healthy tissues. We have applied tissue engineering principles to generate tissues subcutaneously that function as an immunological niche, which can be accessed easily to avoids risks associated with biopsy of native tissues (e.g., brain,) and thereby report on immune status within tissues. Technologies for detecting disease at the earliest stages combined with reprogramming specific cellular responses represent major opportunities for Precision Health to improve health while containing costs.

David Hyland
Professor Emeritus of Texas A&M University
President of Augusta Quantum Electrodynamics, Inc.

The advance of civilization will require substantially more powerful sources of energy than are presently available. Aside from the Earth’s supply of radioisotopes and fossil fuels, the abundant supply of fusion-based energy produced by the sun remains to be efficiently harvested. The collection of solar energy in space could potentially be an order-of-magnitude more effective than ground-based technology because in space, solar insolation is continuous and not attenuated by the atmosphere. These potential advantages have motivated efforts to design space solar power systems since the early 1960s.
A solar power system consists of a space segment that collects solar energy, converts the energy into radiation (typically in a wavelength band to which the atmosphere is mostly transparent), then transmits the radiation to a ground facility that converts the radiation into electrical power. Since the ground-based power collection technology is (relatively) well developed, we concentrate here on the space segment, called the Solar Power Satellite(s) (SPS).

In this presentation, an SPS is assumed to be a space system in geostationary orbit that collects solar power via photovoltaics and transmits it to ground collection stations using microwave radiation. Previous system designs developed over the past several decades entail gigantic, articulated structures with many (in some cases, thousands of) moving parts and require on-orbit infrastructure and in-space construction using advanced robotics. The concept described here combines solar cell / microwave patch antenna printing technology with well-established inflatable satellite technology (based upon the Echo relay satellites). A Power StarTM is a large, deployable, thin-skinned balloon upon which solar cells and microwave transmitters are printed. For launch, the system is compactly folded into a spherical canister. Once attaining orbit, the canister is opened; the balloon inflated via sublimation of an interior coating; the skin rigidified, and the balloon finally evacuated. I review the state of manufacturability in printing technology, inflatable satellite technology, the retro-directive phased array technology for beam direction and shaping, and the power distribution design to address the “elbow problem”. Considerations of solar pressure effects, orbit maintenance, and thermal response are also presented.

In summary, while capable of substantial power generation, even with low efficiency solar cells, the design has no moving parts, requires no in-space construction, and can be packaged in many existing launch vehicle payload fairings. With these features, and according to current economic analyses, the design can provide a first revenue system in one launch.

CANCELLED - The Sweet Remains (April 16, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/69656 69656-17376509@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 16, 2020 8:00pm

Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

The Sweet Remains consist of three gifted and charismatic singer-songwriters, each of whom contribute to the writing and the three-part harmonies that define the band's sound. Driven by strong lyrical and melodic writing, their songs easily appeal to fans of modern folk-rockers like Jason Mraz, Ray Lamontagne, and John Mayer. However, it is their lush harmonies, that distinguish The Sweet Remains from the throngs of guitar-toting troubadour, harking back to supergroups of the 60's and 70's like CSN, the Eagles, and Simon & Garfunkel. When Rich Price, Greg Naughto, and Brian Chartrand met for a chance jam session in a Rhode Island hotel room in 2008, the three instantly recognized a musical blend and kinship that would eventually overcome geography (and solo careers) to form The Sweet Remains. Since then they've toured as far away as Denmark and Germany, and gained critical raves from the likes of the Boston Herald, which wrote that "it's been a long time since three-part harmonies this lush were yoked to songs this melodically gorgeous." Come and luxuriate in the sounds of the harmony trio of the year! The Sweet Remains come to town with new music—they've been releasing a song a month.

Solutions to the climate change challenge must come from the market (as comprised of corporations, the government, non-governmental organizations, and others), the most powerful institution on earth, and from business, which is the most powerful entity within it. Though government is an important arbiter of the market, it is business that transcends national boundaries, possessing resources that exceed those of many nations.

Professor Andrew Hoffman will discuss the ways in which climate change is altering and will alter markets, and the kinds of resulting responses from the business sector.

Professor Hoffman, Holcim (U.S.) Professor of Sustainable Enterprise, University of Michigan Ross School of Business and University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability, performs research using organizational behavior models and theories to understand the cultural and institutional aspects of environmental issues for organizations. He has published over 100 articles/book chapters, as well as 16 books, which have been translated into six languages.

This is lecture #4 in the five-part series "Facing the Future: The Challenge of Climate Change" which explores how climate change is impacting every corner of our earth, and every aspect of our lives.

Violence is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century, as it
has always been. How can we resolve conflict and manage serious differences without assaulting and killing each other? Among the reasons suggested for why we are violent is that religion tells us to do so. What is the link between religion and violence? Does religion necessarily involve violence? Can religion help us to curb violence? Are some religions more violent than others? Why? Why not? These are some of the questions we shall consider in this course in lectures and discussions. Kenneth E. Phifer is a retired Unitarian Universalist minister. He served 25 years as minister of the Ann Arbor congregation and has degrees from Harvard College and the University of Chicago Divinity School. He is the author of numerous articles and books. He has 17 grandchildren. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Fridays April 17 through May 15.

This will be an interactive lecture/discussion. The presenter is Martin Friedburg, whose 25-year career in the wine industry included Sales Manager at two Michigan wineries, ownership of an Ann Arbor wine importing and distribution company and serving as a wine judge. To limit the potential spread of respiratory viruses and safeguard those at highest risk of catching COVID-19, the University of Michigan has canceled all events with estimated attendance of over 100 people.

While we previously announced that the 2020 Stamps Senior Exhibition would move forward, with only the opening reception canceled, the scale of current circumstances now require that we cancel the exhibition entirely — including the screening and performances. We simply do not have the resources necessary to carry out such an ambitious project during this difficult time. We are exploring ways to showcase Stamps Senior work online and will provide more details at a future date.

The 2020 Stamps Senior Exhibition features work in a range of media by graduating BA, BFA and Interarts students at U-M’s Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. The exhibition unfolds during the month of April in various sites in the Art & Architecture Building.

Deformable Object Manipulation: Learning While Doing (April 20, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/74263 74263-18609325@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 20, 2020 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Robotics

This dissertation is motivated by two research questions: (1) How can robots perform a broad range of useful tasks with deformable objects without a time consuming modelling or data collection phase? and (2) How can robots take advantage of information learned while manipulating deformable objects?

To address the first question, I propose a framework for deformable object manipulation that interleaves planning and control, enabling complex manipulation tasks without relying on high-fidelity modeling or simulation. Each part of the framework uses a different representation of the deformable object that is well suited for the specific requirements of each component. The key idea behind these techniques is that we do not need to explicitly model and control every part of the deformable object, instead relying on the object's natural compliance in many situations.

For the second question, I consider the two major components of my framework and examine what can cause failure in each. The goal then is to learn from experience gathered while performing tasks in order to avoid making the same mistake again and again. To this end I formulate the controller's task as a Multi-Armed Bandit problem, enabling the controller to chose models based on the current circumstances. For the planner, I present a method to learn when we can rely on the robot's model of the deformable object, enabling the planner to avoid generating plans that are infeasible.

This framework is demonstrated in simulation with free floating grippers as well as on a 16 DoF physical robot, where reachability and dual-arm constraints make the tasks more difficult.

Dale's research interest include machine learning, controls, and motion planning. He is currently working on applying ideas from these fields to deformable object manipulation and related topics. In particular Dale is interested in algorithms that enable robots to perform tasks such as folding clothes, or making a bed, that are easy for humans to master, but are extremely challenging for robots. Dale graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with both college and university honors, and is also the recipient of the Frank J. Marshall Scholar Award.

Sheila Coursey, the English Department's Frederick Donald Sober Postdoctoral Fellow, will give a public lecture through Blue Jeans. Please use this link to attend: https://bluejeans.com/724046777. (Participant Passcode: 6533)

Abstract: Nice Wanton is a Tudor moral interlude that would put even the most lurid public service announcement to shame: truant schoolchildren are destined for lives of crime and misery, sexually transmitted diseases are fatal markers of moral failing, and a great deal is blamed on lax parenting. The interlude's pedagogical message is recursive and explicit; the Prologue offers the play as a dramatization of the axiom “spare the rod, spoil the child,” a message repeated by several of the virtuous characters within the play. However, given the uncertain multiplicities of the play’s history, it’s difficult to ascertain exactly where, by whom, and for whom the zealous moralizing of Nice Wanton was performed. Instead, this paper focuses on Nice Wanton’s surprisingly robust afterlife in performance anthologies or series. Given time constraints, I am going to focus on the 1911 New Theatre production, which offered Nice Wanton as one performance in a multi-part series that introduced American audiences to the history of early English drama. This series also included the Chester play “Noah’s Flood,” and excerpts from The Winter’s Tale, The School for Scandal, and The Thunderbolt. In this paper, I attempt to trace the history of this performance of Nice Wanton and explore why this interlude resonated with an excerpted theatrical series with an eye towards audience pedagogy. More specifically, I argue that the central time-lapse structure of Nice Wanton, especially when put in dialogue with other excerpted plays, puts pressure on the work of excerpting, and ellipses as meaning-making. Ironically, the features of Nice Wanton that make it particularly attractive in performance anthologies or series— it’s length, it’s boisterous pedagogical simplicity—also create the conditions to make visible the narrative instability of the interlude.

Organized By: Center for Academic Innovation

Children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) must undergo multiple surgical stages to reconstruct the anatomy to a sustainable single ventricle system. Stage I palliation, or the Norwood procedure, enables circulation to both pulmonary and systemic vasculature. The aorta is reconstructed and attached to the right ventricle and a fraction of systemic flow is redirected to the pulmonary arteries (PAs) through a systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunt. Despite abundant hemodynamic data available 4-5 months after palliation, data is very scarce immediately following stage I. This data is critical in determining post-operative success. In this work, we combined population data and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to characterize hemodynamics immediately following stage I (post-stage I) and prior to stage II palliation (pre-stage II). A patient-specific model was constructed as a baseline geometry, which was then scaled to reflect population-based morphological data at both time-points. Population-based hemodynamic data was also used to calibrate each model to reproduce blood flow representative of HLHS patients.

The post-stage I simulation produced a mean PA pressure of 22 mmHg and high-frequency oscillations within the flow field indicating highly disturbed hemodynamics. Despite mean PA pressure dropping to 14 mmHg, the pre-stage II model also produced high-frequency flow components and PA wall shear stress increases. These suboptimal conditions result from the need to ensure adequate PA flow throughout the pre-stage II period, as the shunt becomes relatively smaller compared to the growing patient size. In the future, CFD can be used to optimize shunt design and minimize these suboptimal conditions.

Conservation and restoration of coastal foundation species has become a global priority, to protect and enhance the habitats and services they provide. The oyster native to the west coast of North America between Baja California and British Columbia is Ostrea lurida, the Olympia oyster, a species quite unfamiliar to many people, even those that live in the region. Unlike oysters in other regions, this one is quite small, and does not form high profile reefs. Nevertheless, it is a vital part of bays and estuaries along the Pacific coast, providing food for humans and other species and enriching diversity. Recently, a community of practice has formed to rebuild populations of Olympia oysters to maintain their legacy for future generations.

The Native Olympia Oyster Collaborative (NOOC) was supported in the past year by funding from the National Estuarine Research Reserve System’s Science Collaborative. NOOC created a website (https://olympiaoysternet.ucdavis.edu) to serve as a portal for resources about native oyster science, restoration, and education. NOOC also compiled the first comprehensive archive of Olympia oyster restoration projects, creating an ARC GIS Story Map (https://projects.trnerr.org/oystermap/) to highlight them, and conducting a synthesis of approaches and lessons learned.

This webinar introduces the unique ecology of the Olympia oyster, the challenges it faces, and approaches taken to restoration. NOOC’s accomplishments to date will be highlighted, including the development of the web portal and story map. Finally, presenters will share lessons learned from the synthesis of twenty years of restoration projects conducted along over 2000 km of coast line. These lessons apply to restoration of any coastal foundation species anywhere: the importance of a structured decision-framework to match goals to approaches, the opportunities for community engagement, the need to consider ecosystem processes, and the value of a regional network for strategic planning.

The group explores indigenous hunter-gatherer societies in the 21st century, and how marginalized communities can drive solutions to the challenges they face. The identity of the Baka of Cameroon is deeply tied to the disappearing forest. Marginalized by society, they lack literacy and the language skills to defend their rights. Today, Baka children must “chase two rabbits at once”: learn survival in the forest, and receive formal schooling. The presenter recounts 10 years of firsthand experience working with Baka communities to bring both “rabbits” within children’s reach, and touches on child development, anthropology, and social justice. Photos, video, and everyday artifacts will be used. Ann Arbor native Sarah Strader (nee Tucker) got her B.A. from Georgetown University in 2011. In 2011-12 she had a Fullbright fellowship to live and research in remote Baka villages. In 2012 Chasing Two Rabbits was created and as a 2019 Echoing Green fellow, Sarah continues her work among the Baka to expand the reach of Two Rabbits.

Tinnitus is the disorder of phantom sound perception, while hyperacusis is abnormally increased loudness growth. Tinnitus and hyperacusis are both associated with hearing loss, but hearing loss does not always occur with either condition, implicating central neural activity as the basis for each disorder. Furthermore, while tinnitus and hyperacusis can co-occur, either can occur exclusively, suggesting that separate pathological neural processes underlie each disorder.

Mounting evidence suggests that pathological neural activity in the cochlear nucleus, the first central nucleus in the auditory pathway, underpins hyperacusis and tinnitus. The cochlear nucleus is comprised of a ventral and dorsal subdivision, which have separate principle output neurons with distinct targets. Previous studies have shown that dorsal cochlear nucleus fusiform cells show tinnitus-related increases in spontaneous firing with minimal alterations to sound-evoked responses. In contrast, sound-evoked activity in ventral cochlear nucleus bushy cells is enhanced following noise-overexposure, putatively underlying hyperacusis. While the fusiform-cell contribution to tinnitus has been well characterized with behavioral and electrophysiological studies, the bushy-cell contribution to tinnitus or hyperacusis has been understudied.

This dissertation examines how pathological neural activity in cochlear nucleus circuitry relates to tinnitus and hyperacusis in the following three chapters.

In the first chapter, I characterize the development of a high-throughput tinnitus behavioral model, which combines and optimizes existing paradigms. With this model, I show that animals administered salicylate, a drug that reliably induces tinnitus at high doses in both humans and animals, show behavioral evidence of tinnitus in two separate behavioral tests. Moreover, in these same animals, I show that dorsal-cochlear-nucleus fusiform cells exhibit frequency-specific increases in spontaneous firing activity, consistent with noise-induced tinnitus in animals.

In the second chapter, I show that following noise-overexposure, ventral-cochlear-nucleus bushy cells demonstrate hyperacusis-like neural firing patterns, but not tinnitus-specific increases in spontaneous activity. I contrast the bushy-cell neural activity with established fusiform-cell neural signatures of tinnitus, to highlight the bushy-cell, but not fusiform-cell contribution to hyperacusis. These analyses suggest that tinnitus and hyperacusis likely arise from distinct neural substrates.

In the third chapter, I use computational modelling of the auditory periphery and bushy-cell circuitry to examine potential mechanisms that underlie hyperacusis-like neural firing patterns demonstrated in the second chapter. I then relate enhanced bushy-cell firing patterns to alterations in the auditory brainstem response, a sound-evoked electrical potential generated primarily by bushy cells. Findings in this chapter suggest that there are multiple hyperacusis subtypes, arising from separate mechanisms, which could be diagnosed through fine-tuned alterations to the auditory brainstem response.

Earth Day at 50 Teach-Out (April 23, 2020 12:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/73274 73274-18188465@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 23, 2020 12:00am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Center for Academic Innovation

This year, we have 64 undergraduates representing a broad array of majors including Psychology; Biopsychology, Cognition, and Neuroscience (BCN); Public Health; and Neuroscience. Each poster represents a research project conducted by an undergraduate student alongside a Psychology Department faculty mentor! Many of these posters depict the outcomes of a year-long thesis project that is often the culmination of 3 or 4 years of laboratory work. On this website, visitors can listen to audio clips of the students describing their work, as well as ask questions. This virtual event will be available from 4/20-4/26.
