Saeed A. Khan is Senior Lecturer in the Departments of Near East & Asian Studies and Global Studies at Wayne State University - Detroit, Michigan, where he teaches Islamic and Middle East History, Politics and Culture, and where he also is a Fellow at the Center for the Study of Citizenship. He is also Adjunct Professor in Islamic Studies at the University of Detroit-Mercy and at Rochester College, co-teaching a course on Muslim-Christian Diversity. With areas of focus including US policy, globalization, Middle East and Islamic Studies, as well as genomics and bioethics, Prof. Khan has been a contributor to several media agencies, such as CSpan, NPR, Voice of America, the National Press Club and is a regular panelist on Turning Point.

The first year of the Trump presidency has been marked by considerable rhetoric and by shifts in long standing US foreign policy for the Middle East. Understanding the difference between mere rhetoric and reality matters in a complex, conflict-ridden international hotspot. This lecture will provide a historical survey of America’s role in one of the world’s most volatile areas as well as an analysis of current policy and trends, including assessments of what will be the consequences to regional and global security.

This is the fourth in OLLI’S distinguished lecture series for 2018-19. A total of ten lectures will be presented covering a variety of topics. The next lecture will be January 8, 2019. The topic will be: What To Expect In Health Policy After The 2018 Elections

2018 Christmas Tour Thoughts

One December, not long after Over the Rhine began recording and touring, we were invited to perform some seasonal songs on a public radio station. So we worked up a few carols and traditional tunes. It actually felt really good and conjured up an unusual mix of feelings from childhood: innocence, loss, wonder, joy, sadness. I think we were surprised.
On our 2018 tour, we will be performing as a trio, leaning into three-part harmonies and making an intimate but hopefully holy ruckus. It won’t be all Christmas music: we’ll certainly mix in tunes from many of our records along the way. But hopefully it’s still true; that you haven’t heard anything quite like it.

A Blackthorn show is a musical ramble across Ireland. Traditional songs of emigration, ballads, shanties and jigs and reels combine with some of Ireland’s best contemporary songs for a musical experience that is uniquely Irish. Each of the band’s five members plays multiple instruments, including flute, accordion, tin whistle, fiddle, banjo, cittern, bodhran, and more. These instruments complement the lead vocal of Belfast native Richard McMullan and the band’s tight blend of four-part harmony. This band has been bringing a rich tapestry of Celtic music to southeast Michigan and beyond for 30 years, and they're a must-see for those who want to know the deep traditions of Irish music in Michigan. And, this being December, there may be a holiday tune or two!

Mood Lifters: A new approach to mental health care.

"Everyone faces problems with relationships, work, life transitions (such as job loss), and other challenges that make life less joyful. In fact, at any given time, 70% of people report feeling stress and over 30% report symptoms of anxiety and depression. Many people do not feel comfortable visiting a psychologist or psychiatrist to get help. They want to get better on their own. They are afraid to be labeled as “crazy” or seen as weak. Others cannot afford the high cost of traditional mental health care. Further, many people can’t find well trained providers who provide the latest, scientifically proven care. There are simply too few providers who can provide effective mental health care when it is needed. The lack of comfort, high cost, long waiting lists and shortage of providers are constant barriers to getting help with these common problems. You will hear about Mood Lifters is a new, peer-led, instant access, affordable and science-based program designed to improve mental wellness and decrease sadness and anxiety. Mood Lifters weaves together the most effective biological, psychological and social techniques, based on cutting edge research, to provide strategies that people can use to make changes, develop healthy habits and live the life they want. Mood Lifters was developed by a University of Michigan professor and is scientifically proven to reduce depression and anxiety and increase joy and empowerment.

Jerry Davis is Associate Dean for Business+Impact, and the Gilbert and Ruth Whitaker Professor of Business Administration at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business. He is also Professor of Sociology. Prof. Davis received his Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and taught at Northwestern and Columbia before moving to U. of M. He has published widely in management, sociology, and finance

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) have drastically shifted the costs of organizing work in different ways. It is increasingly feasible to “rent” workers through temporary and contract work, often through online platforms such as Uber. In the U.S., jobs replaced careers, and now gigs are increasingly replacing jobs, creating a precarious new class of employment. This presentation will describe how this shift happened, and speculate on what comes next.

This is the first of a six-lecture series. The subject is The Future of Work. How Will Your Grandchildren Make a Living? The next lecture will be January 10, 2019. The subject is: Renewed Activism for the Labor Movement.

Maite Tapia is Assistant Professor at Michigan State University’s School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Her research centers on the organizing strategies of trade unions and community organizations in the U.S. and Europe, and on work, migration, and the concept of intersectionality. She has published her work in several academic journals and is co-editor of the 2014 Cornell University Press book, "Mobilizing Against Inequality: Unions, Immigrant Workers, and the Crisis of Capitalism".

Prof. Tapia will discuss a multi-year study on young workers and their level of involvement in the labor movements of four countries: France, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Results suggest that two key variables affect involvement level: The openness and encouragement of unions to the leadership development of young workers, and the persistence and creativity of groups of young workers in promoting their own engagement. Young workers embody labor’s potential for movement-building and for resistance to authoritarianism and populism.

This is the second of a six-lecture series. The subject is The Future of Work. How Will Your Grandchildren Make a Living? The next lecture will be January 17, 2019. The subject is: Human Thriving in the New World of Work.

Announcement:

Dear Friends,

I am so sorry I won’t be able to get on a plane today and play these shows with my wonderful 3WATT friends Gretchen Peters and Mary Gauthier. Last night at 2 a.m. I rolled over and felt a stabbing pain in my upper right torso. Things went downhill from there into full blown shingles by dawn, the kind that never erupt on the surface but stay under your skin, causing agonizing nerve pain. Yikes!

The good news is the show will go on in grand style-I know Mary and Gretchen will kill it as they always do-two of my favorite songwriters and performers in the world, both of them Grammy nominated and at the top of their game. And if that ain’t enough Austin’s biggest buzz, singer-songwriter Jaimee Harris will be on board to play her heart out as well. Barry Walsh will also be joining Mary and Gretchen on piano at the Ark in Ann Arbor and at Chicago City Winery - making for one great night of music.

I’m sure you will enjoy this show, and please know I will be back around as soon as I am able.

Thank you!

Eliza Gilkyson

Eliza Gilkyson

Twice Grammy Nominated folksinger Eliza Gilkyson has just released her 20th album, Secularia, a collection of songs old and new that reflect her ongoing search for meaningful spirituality without the constraints of traditional religious belief systems, replacing dominant ideology with a more inclusive perspective that embraces compassion, self-awareness and respect for the natural world in a culture she feels is “wavering between collapse and reinvention”. Produced by her son, Cisco Ryder, (Nocturne Diaries, Roses at the End of Time, Red Horse), with a spare urban approach, the recording features songs of grief, gratitude and wonder, a call for accountability and a true moral compass for these divisive times.

“Secularia is a series of poems and hymns, deeply spiritual songs that praise the wonder and beauty of the world, that lament its destruction, and that celebrate the joy of the mystery that lies behind its wild wonder.”

Gretchen Peters

For two decades, Gretchen Peters has been one of Nashville's most beloved and respected artists. Inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in October 2014 by singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell, who called her "a songwriter and a poet (who) sings as beautifully as she writes” Peters has accumulated accolades as a songwriter for artists as diverse as Etta James, Bonnie Raitt, The Neville Brothers, Patty Loveless, George Strait, Bryan Adams and Faith Hill. In 2015, The Telegraph (UK) named her one of the greatest 60 female singer-songwriters of all time.

“…songs that manage, with deft use of language, to cram a whole epic into three minutes. Astonishingly good writing.” – Pop Matters

“With songwriting as powerful as hers, there’s no need to go looking for qualifiers. She’s a unique, intrinsically valuable musical voice. And there’s never a surplus of those.”
— Randy Lewis, Los Angeles Time

The Associated Press named Mary Gauthier as one of the best songwriters of her generation. Her songs have been recorded by dozens of artists, including Jimmy Buffett, Blake Shelton, Tim McGraw, Bettye Lavette Mike Farris, Kathy Mattea, Bobby Bare, Amy Helm and Candi Staton, and have appeared extensively in Film and Television, most recently on Yellowstone. Her album, Filth and Fire (2002) was named Best Independent CD of the year by the New York Times, and Mary was signed to Universal Lost Highway. Her following 5 records were listed in both the LA Times and NY Times top three releases of the year. She was awarded New Artist of the year by The Americana Music Association in 2005, and her record Mercy Now was named in the top 5 records of the decade by No Depression magazine. Her most recent release, Rifles & Rosary Beads ( a collection of sons co-written with wounded veterans) was nominated for 2018’s record of the year by the Americana Music Association as well she was nominated for a Grammy in 2018 for Best Folk Recording category.

Abstract:

Recent theoretical explorations of music as affective labor in post-Fordist economic systems from Hardt and Negri provide a deeper understanding of the relationship between musicking and social, political and economic systems. However, these approaches are hampered by subsuming various forms of effort into a totalizing view of labor. I propose re-theorizing aesthetic affective work as distinct from generalized and flat considerations of labor, thus bringing to light changes in economic and political systems of exchanges, governance and control. Understanding musical effort as craftsmanship in relation to aesthetic affective work enable us to document the ways that changes from early to late capitalism in mediatized and mechanized forms of effort and compensation that are increasingly replacing aesthetic work with exploited forms of labor.
To illustrate the power of a theory of affective musical work, I offer two seemingly quite different case studies. An effort-centered analysis of the Bach family’s musical activities in 17th - 18th century Western Europe illuminates significant economic and social changes that in turn shaped individual musical subjectivities, as their musical output shaped society and economic treatment of musicians. The second case study examines various strategies over time of the Sesler family, a Roman professional musician kin group from 1920s – 2010s in Serres, Greece and Turkey. The purpose of these case studies is not to provide definitive insights into each of these areas, but rather to suggest a theorization of affective work based on nuancing the categories of musical effort according to local concepts and evaluations. Such theoretical considerations would be applicable to and productive for divergent musical genres, time periods and places.

"In the fight for human rights and democracy, a single spark can ignite a mighty flame, as illustrated by “1987: When the Day Comes,” a star-studded, fact-based political thriller that reconstructs a turning point in South Korean history triggered by the death of a student. Directed by Jang Joon-hwan with a combination of humanistic ardor and intelligent insight comparable to the measured procedural mode of “Spotlight,” this is a compelling depiction of how brave individuals from all walks of life mobilized a whole nation to bring a recalcitrant dictator and his henchmen to their knees." - Maggie Lee, Variety

In the 1960s, when the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was on the front line of the civil rights movement in the South, Bettie Mae Fikes, Marilyn Lowen, and Martha P. Noonan were there, too.

They will share their experiences at “Fighting for Our Rights: Three Young Women Facing Southern Racism in the 1960s.” This 2019 Martin Luther King Jr. Day Symposium is presented by the Department of History, Department of Afroamerican and African Studies (DAAS), and Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies, with additional support from the Kalt Fund for African American and African History.

Bettie Mae Fikes was born in Selma, Alabama, and began singing gospel alongside her mother at age four. At sixteen she became a student leader for SNCC, eventually performing with the SNCC Freedom Singers. She was jailed for several weeks in 1963 for protesting during the voting rights struggle in Selma. Ms. Fikes has graced the stages of Carnegie Hall, the Newport Jazz Festival, and the Library of Congress, as well as performing for Democratic National Conventions in 1964 and 2004. She has performed with Joe Turner, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Albert King, James Brown, Bob Dylan, and Mavis Staples, among others.

Marilyn Lowen is a poet, writer, teacher and lifelong human rights worker. Born in Detroit in 1944, she began protesting racial injustice at eight years old. In high school she picketed Woolworth’s in downtown Detroit in solidarity with SNCC sit-ins in 1960-1961. At Bennington College she started a civil rights group to support SNCC and the Northern Student Movement. She left school to work full time in the movement, first with NSM in Harlem, next in SNCC’s Atlanta photo department, then moving to Tougaloo, Mississippi, to continue working with SNCC and the Child Development Group of Mississippi. She relocated to New York City in 1968, finishing her undergraduate and master's degrees, and teaching in the city’s public schools at all levels.

Martha Prescod Norman Noonan became involved in Students for a Democratic Society and SNCC while an undergraduate at the University of Michigan in the 1960s. Born and raised in Providence, Rhode Island, Noonan’s family moved to Detroit after she graduated from high school. An undergraduate history major at the University of Michigan, she earned a master’s degree in history from Wayne State University and for over two years pursued a PhD in history at U-M until a series of family emergencies interrupted her studies. Ms. Noonan coedited Hands on the Freedom Plow: Personal Accounts by Women in SNCC (University of Illinois Press, 2012).

Presented by the Afroamerican and African Studies, History, and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

Kenda Mutongi is Professor of Africa History at Williams College. She is the author of MATATU: A History of Popular Transportation in Nairobi (University of Chicago Press, 2017); and Worries of the Heart: Widows, Family, and Community in Kenya (University of Chicago Press, 2007), which received an Honorable Mention from the African Studies Association’s Melville J. Herskovits Award for the best scholarly book on Africa in all disciplines. She has also published articles in the main African studies journals.

Her current project focuses on the history of secondary schooling in Kenya. The study focuses on post-colonial Kenya but also looks back to the turn of the twentieth century when the first schools were established in Kenya. The study will help provide a picture of what it has been like for the students to grow up in a Kenya that is buffeted by all the fears, expectations, and contradictions of a new African nation.

Mutongi has been a Member at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, and a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard, and at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in Amsterdam. She has also received grants from the NEH, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation.

Mutongi has served as chair of the Africana Studies and the Africa/Middle Eastern Studies Programs at Williams, and is on the editorial boards of several journals in African Studies.

She teaches a wide range of courses in the history of 19th and 20th century Africa.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Germanic Languages & Literatures

UROP International at Aachen is designed for students from North American universities who wish to gain research experience by conducting research projects at RWTH Aachen University. It takes place during a ten-week research summer school between the middle of May and the end of July.

UROP International at Aachen consists of three components: a research project at one of RWTH Aachen's research institutes or labs is at the core.

Additionally, students are offered a comprehensive accompanying program: an intensive German course and workshops on intercultural learning, scientific methods, and research practice to prepare them for their respective research project.

Furthermore, the international guests participate in a number of leisure activities to gain a look at German history and culture and meet German and international students at RWTH. Regular get togethers, excursions in the region, institute visits, and much more, form the framework of the students' stay in Aachen.

The program’s duration is ten weeks. The first week is dedicated to a Fit for UROP at Aachen workshop, introducing participants to research and culture, as well as to an intercultural training, which allows the students to gain an initial impression of German culture and informs about intercultural differences. Moreover, the first week is used to settle organizational issues and to make students familiar with RWTH Aachen University and with life in Aachen. Each student is assigned a RWTH student, who serves as a buddy and mentor during the first steps in Aachen.

From the second week to the end of the program, students work on their research project full time. The German language course starts during the first week and ends at the end of the eighth week. It takes place twice a week in the morning.

The program is supplemented by numerous leisure activities and excursions with the buddies. All communication is in English.

Students will receive a certificate for both their research project and the language class upon successful completion of the program, marked by the submission of a report and participation in the closing UROP at Aachen Symposium, where students present project results as part of a research conference. A total of 60 students can annually participate in UROP International at Aachen.

This program is open to all LSA students but is not administered through the University of Michigan. You will be eligible to receive German 351 credits (Fall 2019). Talk to a German advisor about language credits.

Dr. Spreitzer is the Keith E. and Valerie J. Alessi Professor of Business Administration in the U. of M. Ross School of Business. Her research focuses on employee empowerment and leadership development, particularly within a context of organizational change and decline. Her recent work looks at positive deviance and how organizations enable employees to thrive. This work fits within a larger effort at Ross to develop a Scholarship of Positive Organizing. She has co-authored several books, including How to be a Positive Leader, and The Handbook of Positive Organizational Scholarship.

Today the experience of work is radically changing. Almost 40% of workers are in nonstandard jobs such as freelance or contract work. People are working remotely, connecting to each other through text, email, and collaboration technology. Work can seemingly be accomplished anytime, anywhere. In this interactive talk we will explore these changing dynamics and how they impact thriving at work.

This is the third of a six-lecture series. The subject is The Future of Work. How Will Your Grandchildren Make a Living? The next lecture will be January 24, 2019. The subject is: Artificial Intelligence and the (Vanishing?) Future of Work.

Full of energy and surprise, wit and subtlety, Twisted Pine has quickly become one of the most acclaimed young string bands in the Northeast. Audiences across the U.S. and beyond have been drawn to their forthright songwriting, lush harmonies, and musical daring. In its early days, Twisted Pine hewed close to its bluegrass origins, but over time the quartet has developed a unique, infectious style without limits. Moving beyond the standard verse-chorus-solo structure of traditional string bands, Twisted Pine is a multilayered ensemble that brings the enveloping sound and pop hooks of indie music to an acoustic instrumental setting. They come to Michigan with a new album, "Dreams."

Abstract
“Those diseases that medicines do not cure are cured by the knife. Those that the knife does not cure are cured by fire. Those that fire does not cure, must be considered incurable.” Hippocrates in 370 BC made the first recorded mention of the use of heat as a therapeutic. To this day, the effect of temperature on the body is of interest to clinicians, athletes, researchers, and perhaps anyone that has lived through Georgia summers or Michigan winters. The body maintains temperature homeostasis by the process of thermoregulation. The body’s ability to thermoregulate is an important coping mechanism to withstand various physiological states, such as fever, and environmental exposures such as the weather. The cardiovascular (CV) system plays a vital role in thermoregulation because of its influence on heat transfer via forced convection and conduction by changes in blood distribution, blood velocity, and proximity of tissues. It remains unclear how the allocation of blood in various compartments (such as the innermost core, fat, muscle, and skin) changes with temperature. Challenges in measuring core vasculature have resulted in a lack of empirical information regarding how it might change with core temperature. Therefore, to fully understand the CV system’s role in thermoregulation, this thesis focuses on using murine models to study the effect of temperature on core vasculature. The overall purpose is to provide a novel and physiologically accurate approach to studying thermoregulation by incorporating structural and functional changes in the CV system occurring in the core. Using murine models and MRI, we noninvasively quantified structural and functional vascular response in core arteries and veins to increasing core body temperature. We also studied the effects of sex and age on the CV response to increasing temperature. Using a PID-controlled heater to blow hot air across the animals, core temperature was controlled from mild hypothermia (35 °C) to mild hyperthermia (38 °C). At each temperature, we imaged three to four locations of the body from head-to-toe, and quantified blood flow and velocity, vessel area, and
measured circumferential cyclic strain of the core vessels. Overall, we have shown: 1) that increases in flow occur in most arteries and veins, which is opposite to current hypotheses regarding the venous response; 2) that the magnitude of increased flow varies based on anatomical location; and, 3) that the increase in flow sometimes involves cross-sectional area and velocity and other times involves only one or the other. These vascular responses are also influenced by sex and age. It is important to incorporate the cardiovascular changes occurring in the core into future bioheat or computational fluid dynamics modeling because blood flow is critical in heat
generation and transfer in vivo. This research can help researchers, clinicians, and others interested in temperature’s effect to better model and predict cardiovascular outcomes.

Mountain Heart offers bluegrass and more. This band as been fearlessly revolutionizing the way acoustic music can be presented and played. The band's name has been synonymous with cutting-edge excellence in bluegrass circles since the group's creation. Widely known throughout the music industry for continually redefining the boundaries of acoustic music, the band has gained legions of loyal fans as a result of both their superlative musicianship and their incendiary live performances. Mountain Heart's music always fell just barely under the bluegrass umbrella, and now, from large outdoor folk music, Americana, jam band, and bluegrass festivals, to sold-out shows opening for Southern rock icons like The Marshall Tucker Band, The Tedeschi Trucks Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mountain Heart has been making an undeniable connection with wider audiences. Whenever they come to The Ark, they tear the house down—and at last year'sAnn Arbor Folk Festival, they just had a bigger house to tear down.

Perhaps the most impressive Korean debut at Busan this year, the thoughtful and entertaining Microhabitat is a convincing showcase for star Esom and and an even more impressive calling card for director Jeon Go-woon, who becomes the first woman in the Gwanghwamun Cinema group to helm a feature, and her debut may well be the collective's best yet.

Miso is a 31-year-old housekeeper who lives strategically on a small budget but leaves enough aside for her daily vices, which includes a pack of cigarettes and a glass of whiskey. When New Year's Day in 2014 brings about a 2,000 won ($2) across-the-board price hike on cigarettes, rather than cut back on the habit, she gives up having a roof over her head and begins to surf through the couches of her old college friends, each of whom has their particular circumstances that don't allow her to stick around for long." - Pierce Conran, ScreenAnarchy
