Humans are always learning new tasks from demonstrations, instructions, and even trial and error. In contrast, current AI systems are bound to the specific tasks for which they were originally programmed. We have seen great advances in the ability of AI systems to learn to do individual tasks at human expert levels (e.g., Chess, Go, and video games), but they are hopeless when presented with a new task. As AI systems become more prevalent, we need to start asking how can we teach them to do what we want. Join us for an evening to discuss research on how we are building AI systems that learn new tasks through natural language instruction and demonstrations.

What is the state-of-the-art in teaching robots new tasks through natural interaction?
What are the key challenges?
What are the potential applications and who will benefit?

Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

Presented by The Ark
A haggis is a tasty Scottish dish consisting of sheep heart, liver, and lungs, mixed with oatmeal, onion, suet, and spices, and then boiled inside the sheep's stomach. The Canadian-Scots band Enter the Haggis (bagpiper Craig Downie is from Scotland) has just about as much variety in their style, a high-speed collision of Celtic music, rock, bluegrass, funk, and world music. An Enter the Haggis live show is a musical feast—dynamic and emotionally uplifting. Alternating between upbeat rock numbers with sing-along choruses and slower, more introspective alt pop songs, the band plays progressive and lyrically driven music that’s strongly rooted in Celtic tradition—from the storytelling to the bagpipes. Enter the Haggis returns to The Ark with an as-yet-untitled new release—be the first one on your block!

Presented by The Ark
Birds of Chicago, the husband-and-wife duo of JT Nero and Allison Russell, reassert the simple notion that beautiful words and music can still tap deep veins of emotion. With stark, elemental imagery that feels like scripture, or a lost folk song recovered, The Birds draw heavily on the gospel tradition, and they call their music secular gospel. For Birds of Chicago, every word counts. Every note counts. No gold-dusting, no filler. Music is the good news, and the music of this duo has a quiet but seismic urgency. Birds of Chicago alternate moody rock swagger with ghostly soundscapes. Their music is melancholy but never shoe-gazing. raw and soul-rich. Birds of Chicago have developed a fervent following, touring 200 nights a year since their formation in late 2012. They're coming to Michigan with an ambitious new release, "Love in Wartime," that they call "a rock and roll suite with a cinematic sweep." It's co-produced by Nero and Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars).

UM Psychology Community Talk: The Science of Choking Under Pressure: Why we fail and how to succeed when it matters (November 25, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67441 67441-16855672@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 25, 2019 7:00pm

Organized By: Department of Psychology

Abstract: Just in that moment when we want to do our best and the pressure is on, we often fail to live up to our potential. From sports to public-speaking to test-taking, many of us have experienced and witnessed "choking under pressure". What is happening in your brain and body when you choke in stressful situations? Is there anything we can do about it? In this talk, UM Psychology Professor Taraz Lee shares insights from the fields of Psychology and Neuroscience that shed light on the phenomenon of "choking under pressure" including some of the psychological tools you can use to perform at your best when it matters most.

Bio: Taraz Lee is an Assistant Professor in the Psychology Department at the University of Michigan in the Cognition and Cognitive Neuroscience Area and the head of the Cognition, Control, and Action (CoCoA) Lab. Using a variety of techniques such as functional neuroimaging, non-invasive brain stimulation, behavioral studies, and computational modeling, Prof. Lee and his lab study how motivation and executive control processes both help and hurt performance in a variety of domains. Many people have the intuition that exerting too much control over well-learned actions can be harmful, especially when under pressure to perform. At the same time, most day-to-day activities clearly benefit from goal-directed control and enhanced motivation. The CoCoA Lab is interested in understanding this apparent paradox. How do the mechanisms of executive control and motivation both support and potentially hamper the activity of neural systems needed for successful performance?

CBT Group for Social and Performance Anxiety (November 26, 2019 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/67160 67160-16909309@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 26, 2019 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Mary A. Rackham Institute

Registration is open for the University Psychological Clinic’s fall CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) group for adults with social or performance anxiety. People with social anxiety often worry about seeming incompetent, unintelligent, or awkward in social situations. Symptoms like heart pounding, shaking, sweating, dry mouth, or “blanking out” are common symptoms. People with social anxiety may continue to worry about how they came across to others long after the event is over. This group can help you build skills to counter the effects.

If you think social anxiety is negatively affecting your relationships, your work, or your overall mental health, this group might be the next step for you. Clinicians at the Psychological Clinic use evidence-based group therapy to help participants learn to identify and shift unhealthy thinking patterns. You will build coping skills and increase confidence in a supportive environment and at your own pace. The group will meet on Tuesdays, beginning October 15, 2019, for eight weeks, with an additional follow-up booster session a month after the program’s conclusion.

If you think this group is the right fit for you, call the Psych Clinic at (734) 764-3471 to schedule an individual, preliminary screening. This screening will take 30-60 minutes. Some insurance is accepted to cover the cost. Without insurance the screening cost is $20. This screening allows you to work with a clinician to determine if the group is right for you.

Please send referrals by faxing a brief treatment summary or evaluation report to the Psychological Clinic, attention Michelle Van Etten Lee, Ph.D. The fax number is (734) 764-8128.

Your Thanksgiving weekend in Michigan isn't complete without hearing Matt Watroba! Matt is the kind of guy who makes friends easily. Not only is he on a first-name basis with most of the major folk musicians in North America after a few decades of sharing stages with them, but he also has the kind of rapport with audiences that makes them feel as if they're sitting among friends in a living room. Matt's local shows have had the feel of a homecoming for Michigan folk music, with great songs and warm memories for all—and often special guests!

Presented by The Ark
Born in Flint and a true Michigan institution, Mr. B (Mark Braun) is a rare living link to the early days of boogie woogie, having learned directly from legends like Little Brother Montgomery and Blind John Davis. He plays in concert halls, he plays outdoors, he's even played on a piano being paddled out to Mackinac Island, but wherever you heard him, it's an exciting show. Each year Mr. B stops in at The Ark for a Thanksgiving weekend concert, and it always brings something new. Mr. B often brings in musicians from around southeast Michigan and beyond for a boogie and jazz blowout to kick off the holiday season with a big dose of boogie woogie joy. You may think every town has a Mr. B, but you would be very, very wrong!

Presented by The Ark
Gemini is the much-loved duo of Sandor and Laszlo Slomovits. They've been performing since 1973 and are now playing music for the third—or is it fourth?—generation of young fans and families. They write and perform acoustic music for children and families, celebrating with their audiences the warmth, fun, and joy of family life. A Gemini concert is a kinetic event, filled with rousing singalongs, hand motion tunes, folk tales, and music from around the world. "If the Pied Piper had been twins, chances are he would have been Gemini," says the Detroit News. Since 1979 San and Laz have released numerous recordings for adults and children and families. This is Gemini's annual Thanksgiving Weekend Benefit Concert for Mott Children’s Hospital. We’ll be joined by our “Good Mischief Band” (Brian Brill on piano and Aron Kaufman on drums) and special guest Emily Rose on violin and vocals. Emily, San’s daughter, was born and cared for in the Holden NICU of Mott 25 years ago.

Presented by The Ark
Bill Kirchen is an Ann Arbor-bred guitar god, a Telecaster titan who whirls through a whole gallery of country and rock styles over the course of an evening. After a stint as lead guitarist with Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, he's gone on to an acclaimed solo career, and when he returns to town at the holidays his concerts turn into joyous reunions celebrating the glory days of the Ann Arbor honky-tonk scene, with special guests often on hand. Some things haven't changed—the Austin American-Statesman recently praised his "no-nonsense diesel guitar attack, powered by great booming, bottom-heavy licks still covered with axle grease." But Bill has evolved into a very funny rockabilly and country songwriter as well. This honky-tonk holiday show, which has often featured special guests, will get you in the mood for New Year's Eve a few weeks early!

Honors joins the university in participating in #GivingBlueday, an annual opportunity for online giving. Donated funds benefit students involved in HELA - Honors in Engaged Liberal Arts (333462) as well as students applying for research and travel grants through the Strategic Fund (309547).

From the Director's Letter in the 2019 Forum:
"Our new LSA Dean, Anne Curzan, emphasizes the importance of joy, play, and gratitude in our academic lives. Dean Curzan and I have known one another for twenty-one years — we both have our Ph.D.s from U-M and defended our dissertations just weeks apart — so maybe it’s no surprise that I share those commitments. In the Honors Program, it’s easy to experience both joy and gratitude, and as I begin my second term as Director, going to campus every day feels more like getting to play than going to a job. Our students, our staff, our faculty, and you, our alums, are the reason for it.

Play doesn’t mean a lack of seriousness. Our students, in particular, confront a world that is more competitive and more uncertain than that many of us faced at their age. (By “us” I mean those of us who need more than their fingers and toes to count the years since college graduation.) But it is exactly the younger generation’s creativity, grit, and innovativeness that move us, too, to be playful...The Honors Program both maintains its traditional strengths and builds new ways of focusing on our core values: intellectual curiosity and academic rigor. [Additional content at lsa.umich.edu/honors/news and in the 2019 Forum Vol. 23.]

Joy and gratitude, indeed. I feel it every day, getting to work and play with our students, the Honors staff, our faculty and graduate instructors. And joy and gratitude to you, as well, our alums and friends, who make so much of it possible. Thank you!"

"New Ways" is a new album by Montreal’s Leif Vollebekk, whose music has been described as inhabiting a space between Sigur Rós and Bob Dylan. Two years ago, things were changing fast, and the songwriter didn’t want to forget. "I often think of Leonard Cohen’s line, 'I hope you’re keeping some kind of record,'" Leif says. "So I did." It was like he was pretending you can compose a soundtrack to your own life (which perhaps you can). In the end, "New Ways" is a document of everything felt, the way each moment arrived and moved through him. Whereas his Polaris Prize–winning "Twin Solitude" was about self-reflection, "New Ways" is about engaging and changing, touching and being touched. It’s a physical record, with louder and tighter grooves, and the rawest lyrics the musician has ever recorded. A portrait of beauty, desire, longing, risk, remembrance—without an instant of regret. "She’s my woman and she loved me so fine," goes the chorus to one tune. "She’ll never be back."

Civic engagement, civic discourse, and civic education have become increasingly popular research topics in recent years. Researchers from a wide variety of disciplines study civic education, civic action, and the many relationships between the two. For the past several years, Civic Learning, Engagement, and Action Data Sharing (CivicLEADS) at ICPSR has been helping researchers share and access high-quality datasets to study civic education and involvement. This free webinar provides information on the collection of publicly-available data archived at CivicLEADS.org as well as use cases of how other researchers are using our resources. As a webinar participant, you will:

• Learn about CivicLEADS and how to access the data and tools the project provides;
• See clear examples of how the tools and resources of CivicLEADS can facilitate and further your own research; and
• Provide feedback to CivicLEADS’s staff on how the project can better support your work.

While CivicLEADS is a resource for all civic education, engagement, and action researchers, early career researchers and graduate students may find this webinar particularly useful.

Taught jointly by faculty of the Ross School of Business and the Stamps School of Art & Design, the annual Integrated Product Design course challenges seven cross-disciplinary student teams from the College of Engineering, Ross School of Business, Stamps School of Art & Design, and School of Information to design, build, and market a brand new product, and then to face free market competition through the IPD Trade Show.

The current IPD challenge: Design and produce a tangible product suitable for use by working adults, which may be used to build healthy living habits, so as to improve quality of life, health maintenance and outcomes; and be profitable at a consumer cost of less than $200.

Members of the University of Michigan community and the general public are invited to meet the student design teams, test out prototypes of their new technologies, and vote for the “best of the best” at the 2019 Integrated Product Development Trade Show, December 4 at the Ross School of Business in Ann Arbor.

In 2018 Michigan made history with its 61% vote for an Independent Redistricting Commission to end the gerrymandering that caused legislative district boundaries to serve partisan interests. But much remains to be done. The speaker will review the problem of gerrymandering and the amendment in Proposition 2 designed to stop it. He will also discuss the implementation of the provisions in Proposition 2, including the impact of recent lawsuits challenging them, how the new citizen redistricting commission will operate and why every OLLI member should apply to be in the pool of citizens from which its membership will be drawn.

Kevin Deegan-Krause is Associate Professor of Political Science at Wayne State University in Detroit. His research focuses on political parties, and he is currently completing a book on new political parties in Europe. His community engagement focuses on local governance, and he has served on Ferndale’s library and school boards. His professional and civic interests intersect in his active volunteering for Voters Not Politicians which in 2018 ensured the passage of Proposition 2 against gerrymandering.

This is the fifth in a six-lecture series. The subject is Voting in America: Perennial Issues, Current Developments. The next lecture will be December 12, 2019. The title is: Race, the Party System, and Elite Incentives in American Elections

The first session of this course for those 50 and over will help to revive memories of simpler times when laundry was always hung to dry outdoors -- when folks went “online” without the Internet! There will be washday history, sociological issues of ethnic stereotypes in the laundry industry, the role of feminism, industrialization, culture, and ecology. Instructor Anne Lawrence will share laundry poetry, personal stories, and the opportunity to consider the clothesline in ways never before appreciated. The second session will illustrate how artists and photographers have captured the beauty of the clothesline in a wide variety of ways, and how the routine of hanging laundry out to dry sets minds free to create.

Instructor Lawrence has been a clothesline historian and hobbyist for over 30 years.

In keeping with the traditions of her Mauritanian home, the announcement of Verida’s impending arranged marriage brings with it the beginning of gavage—the ritual of over-eating in order to attain a fuller figure more desirable to her future husband. As the obedient daughter of two loving parents, Verida at first accepts the intense physical strain of gavage with little resistance. But as the ritual’s requirements become increasingly all-consuming, Verida feels her resistance to the intense expectations of both her mother and culture push toward a breaking point.

Director Michela Occhipinti’s narrative feature debut, Flesh Out (2019) is an intensely resonant look at one woman’s struggle to find an identity for herself outside of the suffocating pressure to conform.

On our 2019 tour, we will be leaning into three-part harmonies and making an intimate but hopefully holy ruckus. It won’t be all Christmas music: we’ll certainly mix in tunes from many of our records along the way. But hopefully it’s still true; that you haven’t heard anything quite like it.

Forum on Defense and Diplomacy in Afghanistan (December 6, 2019 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/69715 69715-17390844@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, December 6, 2019 8:30am
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Weiser Diplomacy Center

This forum will engage policymakers, military officials, academic experts, diplomats and other thought leaders to examine challenges and opportunities at the intersection of defense and diplomacy during this crucial transitional period in Afghanistan. It will feature three public panels and a pair of keynote sessions, as well as a smaller, closed-door academic workshop in the afternoon. The conversation will be wide- ranging but will focus on a few major themes:

● Recalibrating in defense and diplomacy. How should the roles and responsibilities of U.S. allied military forces and resident diplomats evolve to reflect the changing political conditions in Afghanistan?

● Keeping the peace. What types of diplomatic arrangements will be necessary to help maintain any cease-fire between the Afghan government and the Taliban and help promote a lasting peace? What form of U.S. and/or international military engagement will be appropriate in that context?

● Promoting democracy, development and the rule of law. What priorities should the international community set for domestic developments in Afghanistan looking forward? How might a political transition in Afghanistan challenge democratic governance, inclusive development, human rights and the rule of law? What tools are available to meet these challenges and seize opportunities?

This course will discuss the development of a gene-therapy strategy that enables the human body to fight malignant brain cancer and, potentially, other solid cancers by employing a highly disabled virus to deliver therapeutic cargoes. Genetically engineered viruses (vectors) kill the cancerous tumor cells and elicit an anti-tumor immune response. The presenter will also discuss the preliminary results of the Phase I clinical trial at the University of Michigan – the first-in-human, first-in-the-world clinical trial using two different gene-therapy vectors.
Maria G. Castro, instructor, is the R.C. Schneider Professor of Neurosurgery, Professor of Cell and Developmental Biology, and Program Director of the Cancer Biology Training grant at the University of Michigan Medical School. She dedicates her research to novel treatments for adult and pediatric brain cancer, including immune-mediated gene therapy. Hailed as “Midwestern rock heroes” by American Songwriter, Red Wanting Blue has spent the last twenty years establishing themselves as one of the indie world’s most enduring and self-sufficient acts, notching appearances everywhere from Letterman to NPR and reaching #3 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart, all while operating largely outside the confines of the traditional music industry. For their powerful new album, ‘The Wanting,’ the band handed production duties over to acclaimed singer/songwriter Will Hoge, who helped them create their most ambitious, fully realized collection yet. Recorded in Nashville, TN, the record draws on many of the group’s traditional strengths—indelible melodies, infectious hooks, explosive performances—even as the making of it pushed them far outside their comfort zone and forced them to take an unprecedented, nearly year-long break from touring.

Presented by The Ark
Livingston Taylor picked up his first guitar at age 13, beginning a 50-year career that has encompassed performance, songwriting, and teaching. Born in Boston and raised in North Carolina, Livingston is the fourth child in a very musical family that includes Alex, James, Kate and Hugh. Including top-40 hits "I Will Be in Love with You" and "I’ll Come Running," to "I Can Dream of You" and "Boatman," both recorded by his brother James, Livingston’s creative output has continued unabated. His musical knowledge has inspired a varied repertoire, and he is equally at home with a range of musical genres—folk, pop, gospel, jazz—and from upbeat storytelling to touching ballads. Liv's relaxed on-stage presence belies the depth of his musical knowledge, and fans may often be treated to a classic Gershwin or something from the best of Broadway.

Abstract: Did you know that by the time a child is two or three years old they can tell a simple story? These early storytelling skills can help children develop a strong foundation for building later reading and writing skills. Research suggests that opportunities to practice telling stories helps children develop stronger language skills and a better understanding of how stories are structured. This presentation will review seven ways that young children's storytelling skills can impact their literacy development. The presentation will also share tips on how best to support young children to become better storytellers.

Bio: Nicole Gardner-Neblett, Ph.D., is a developmental psychologist whose work focuses on the individual and contextual factors that promote children’s language and literacy development. She adopts a strengths-based approach to understanding children’s development and identifying effective practices to transform the early learning experiences of young children. In particular, Dr. Gardner-Neblett’s work examines the oral narrative, or storytelling, skills of African American children and the implications for literacy development and educational practice.

According to the conventional wisdom that has grown up around the public image of Franklin D. Roosevelt in the post-Watergate era, he became president only by fooling the public about the paralysis he suffered as a result of poliomyelitis. In fact, the author’s research shows that FDR made masterful use of his disability as he recovered from the disease and rose to the White House.

After earning a Ph.D. in history at the University of Michigan, lecturer James Tobin spent 20 years as a newspaper reporter and freelance writer. His books include “Ernie Pyle’s War” (1997), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award in biography; “To Conquer the Air: The Wright Brothers and the Great Race for Flight” (2003); and “The Man He Became: How FDR Defied Polio to Win the Presidency” (2013). He is currently a Professor of Journalism at Miami University.

This is the fourth in OLLI’S distinguished lecture series for 2019-20. A total of ten lectures are presented covering a variety of topics. Lectures are held on Tuesday mornings once each month. The next lecture will be held January 14, 2020. The title is Living Transgender: The Struggles and Rewards.

From Dispatch, which he started in his early 20s; to his politically driven band, State Radio; to his nascent solo project, Chadwick Stokes and the Pintos, Chad has committed himself to using music as a vehicle for social and political change. Along with his wife, Sybil, he founded Calling All Crows, a nonprofit organization dedicated to engaging music fans around women's issues both at home and abroad. They've worked to bring awareness to the worldwide refugee crisis, to the proliferation of violence against women and to the persistence of sexual violence within the music industry.

It happens in the middle of Michigan in the heart of December. Since 2007, it has become a yearly tradition for The Ragbirds to present this unique family-friendly holiday show called Ebird & Friends. The songs and artists change from year to year, but the spirit of the event is community, the soul is creativity and the show is unforgettable. "Ebird"is Erin Zindle, lead singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist of The Ragbirds. Erin’s budding childhood love of music was sparked at Christmastime. The holidays were the one time each year that the entire Zindle family gathered to make music together, and that early communal experience of music took deep roots. Fiddles, horns, bagpipes, guitars, and instruments from all over the world will be sounding their voices together in harmony. Expect to be entertained, surprised, cheered, and warmed by this collaborative artistic performance of new and old songs, including Ragbirds' original songs inspired by the holiday. This show has become a phenomenon—it's up to four presentations this year for its 12th anniversary, and it shows no signs of slowing down.

A new era of Honky Tonk has arrived with what Zachariah Malachi & The Hillbilly Executives are bringing to the table.

With the biblical name his daddy gave him, Zachariah Malachi weaps tales of heartache, love and struggle that will remind you of a time where honky tonk music was widely used as a coping mechanism for everyday life.

The Hillbilly Executives are deserving of their name. As true masters of their craft, they bring the sound of bygone days to life as they back the words and emotion evoked one song at a time.

She's been featured by the New York Times Popcast, played numerous times on NPR and shared the stage with artists such as Jewel, Sarah McLachlan and jazz drummer Max Roach. The New York Times music podcast called her music "absolutely gorgeous" and with "To the Light," her seventh studio album, due out this November, Heaton is surrendering to her love of collaboration more than ever before.

The father-daughter duo of San & Emily Slomovits have been playing music together since Emily was a young child. San, along with his brother Laz, as the duo Gemini, have been a highly popular folk act throughout Michigan and the United States since 1973, and Emily began joining them on stage when she was just eight years old. Now 25, Emily is an accomplished violinist, at ease in a variety of genres from classical to folk, pop and jazz, while her exceptional voice and experience as an actor allows her to convincingly present styles ranging from folk to tunes from Broadway musicals. San and Emily’s beautifully blended, genetically enhanced harmonies and warm stage presence are hallmarks of all their shows. Emily recently moved to Chicago, but regularly returns to Ann Arbor to continue playing music with her dad and other musicians. For this concert San and Emily will be joined by two of their favorite collaborators, bassist Jacob Warren and pianist Brian Brill. One set will feature San, Emily and Jacob playing virtuosic arrangements of classical, folk, klezmer and pop tunes, while in the other set San, Emily and Brian will perform songs from classic Hollywood movies and Broadway musicals such as Oklahoma, The Sound of Music, Fiddler on the Roof, The Wizard of Oz and more.

Brother Joscephus and the Love Revolution play a foot stomping gumbo of roots rock, old-school soul, New Orleans rhythms, and feel-good secular Gospel. Since 2007, they have been on a musical mission to make the world a more righteous place! The two main visionaries of this musical explosion of love, Brother Joscephus and his eccentric cohort the Right Reverend Dean Dawg, dip heavily into a gumbo rich with New Orleans rhythms, old-school soul, classic rock stylings, and feel-good gospel music. They combine all this with a message of righteousness, urging us toward acceptance and love for one another. From their home base in Brooklyn, New York, BroJo has brought its Love Revivals to cities all over the country. When you combine the music and the message with a one-of-a-kind high-energy stage spectacle, you've got the makings of a revolution!

Kick off the new year with not one but eight Michigan songwriters: "One Shining Moment" composer David Barrett, Detroit native and Great American Song Contest winner Jim Bizer, contemporary country-folk road warrior Annie Capps, Irish-American chanteuse Kitty Donohoe, four-time Detroit Music Award winner Jan Krist, Michael Hough and David Tamulevich of the "Music to Cure What Ails You" duo Mustard's Retreat, and southeastern Michigan folk veteran Matt Watroba. The Yellow Room is the "brilliantly yellow" living room of Tamulevich's house on Ann Arbor's Old West Side, where gang members meet monthly for musical brainstorming and mutual critique. Come and be a fly on the wall as the exchange of creative ideas flows freely! "To have any one of these songwriters perform at Trinity House is a real treat," says promoter Bill Keith.

Mix the Hot Club of Paris with the sweaty soul of Dixieland, a couple blades of bluegrass, a pinch of ragtime beat, and a western swinging swagger, and you've just conjured the washboard-driven sound of The Appleseed Collective. The Appleseed Collective is poised to become the new sound of string music. Riding the wave of the bluegrass revival beyond newgrass and into a strange new genre-bending territory, they explore the full range of dark and light, old and new, composition and improvisation in a deeply theatrical stage show that transports audiences through time. "The blends of swing, bluegrass, Dixieland ditties and alluring gypsy-folk whirls—is something close to a transcendent listen ... you're there, on some dirtroad, being led on by these songs," says reviewer Jeff Milo of iSpy magazine. The Appleseed Collective has been getting attention from as far away as the UK, and this is a Michigan band that's going places!

British guitar legend Albert Lee, regarded by many as one of the world’s finest guitar players, with a career spanning more than 50 years, needs no introduction for country music, blues, and rock fans. Widely hailed for his fingerstyle and hybrid picking technique, Albert Lee helped to redefine country guitar for a whole generation of players with his song "Country Boy." Albert’s many career highlights include two Grammy wins, five years in the Eric Clapton band, and stints with the Rolling Stones' Bill Wyman, The Crickets, the Everly Brothers, Joe Cocker, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell and many more. Take it from Emmylou, who says, "When Saint Peter asks me to chronicle my time down here on earth, I'll be able to say—with pride if that's allowed—that for a while I played rhythm guitar in a band with Albert Lee."

Climate change is becoming THE challenge of the 21st century, and is likely to impact most of the human enterprise, as well as planetary life support systems, in increasingly unprecedented ways.

Professor Jonathan T. Overpeck will discuss global implications, including the imperative to act quickly on climate change, or risk major Earth system tipping points. He’ll then drill down to the scale of the U.S. and Great Lakes region to provide a more relatable sense of what is at stake.

Professor Overpeck, William B. Stapp Collegiate Professor of Environmental Education and the Samuel A. Graham Dean of the University of Michigan School for Environment and Sustainability, is an interdisciplinary climate scientist and has written over 210 published works on climate and the environmental sciences. He served as a Working Group 1 Coordinating Lead Author for the Nobel Prize winning IPCC 4th Assessment (2007). He is a Fellow of AGU and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and tweets about climate-related issues @GreatLakesPeck.

This is lecture #1 in the "Facing the Future: The Challenge of Climate Change" Friday themed lecture series which will explore how climate change is impacting every corner of our earth, and every aspect of our lives.

Come celebrate the work of artists in the exhibition Taking a Stand, featuring work by micha cárdenas, Oliver Husain, Elizabeth LaPensée, Meryl McMaster, and Syrus Marcus Ware. Refreshments will be served. At 6:15pm there will be a special performance by Detroit-based artist Sacramento Knoxx in collaboration with Bianca Millar & White Feather Woman.

Taking a Stand is a group exhibition that brings together lively and energetic work that highlights the ways in which artists build solidarity and shape contemporary culture as active participants in our society. The works in the exhibition encompass photography, interactive drawings, augmented reality, and 3-D film installation. The collectivist impulse of the projects recast the gallery as a catalyst, a site of action and possibility for urgent and meaningful dialogue on culture and politics. The immersive and interactive installations don’t just represent social concerns from our cosmopolitan present, they delve into playful and poetic exchanges with public audiences on empathy and decoloniality to imagine just and equitable futures. Drawing on the themes of science fiction, artists in the exhibition invite audiences to time travel, blurring fact with fiction, weaving fantastical narratives and desires with ancestral knowledge, collective memories, and stories from their natural and urban environments. They acknowledge the vitality of recuperating Indigenous, migrant, and LGBTQ subjectivities and practices to better understand how to heal our damaged planet. Even though these installations are temporary and ephemeral, they foster vibrant liminal spaces for the public to explore what could be done during this time of ever-present ecological and political change. Taking a Stand is curated by Srimoyee Mitra.

Tonight's show brings together two legendary alt-rock frontment, Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket) and Chris Barron (Spin Doctors).

Glen Phillips has always been a courageous and inviting songwriter. During his years as lead singer of Toad the Wet Sprocket, the band’s elegant folk/pop sound and his honest, introspective lyrics helped them forge a close bond with their fans. Since starting his solo career, Phillips has pared his music down to its emotional core, concentrating on the simple truths of love and relationships, with a profound spiritual understanding.

The zeitgeist is a moving target, and Chris Barron has always been a crack shot. The New York songwriter is no longer the debutant who set out on the circuit’s sharp end in 1988 with $100, a battered acoustic and a headful of the alt-rock anthems that would elevate Spin Doctors to global stardom. He’s a veteran approaching 50, living in a world changed beyond recognition, compelled to write the music that chronicles the here-and-now. As far back as he can remember, he’s had a hunger driving him onward, towards something just out of reach. His latest album, "Angels and One-Armed Jugglers," is the culmination of a lifetime’s craft and a record both contemporary and classic.

This discussion group seeks an inside view of how U.S. foreign policy is made, drawing on cases developed by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) – Model Diplomacy Program. Our aim will be to understand organizations and agencies involved in the foreign policy process; second, how foreign policy decisions are made at the highest level within the National Security Council (NSC); and lastly, to obtain an understanding of the history/context for the policy issues under discussion.
The heart of the class will be role-playing, with participants taking on the positions of their chosen role, interacting with fellow participants, and making final foreign policy recommendations. Selected readings and background materials matched to the case involved, along with tips/guidance from the CFR Model Diplomacy program will help all participants in their preparation.
Apart from the first organizational meeting, each subsequent session will focus on a different foreign policy issue from the CFR case library. If the group wishes, we may substitute a foreign policy issue of our own choosing to role play.
Instructor John Fogarasi is both a lecturer and practitioner of U.S. foreign policy, having taught political science/international affairs earlier in his career and later as a senior U.S. diplomat with over 30 years-service in Europe, Asia, and North America.
Class will meet Monday afternoons from January 20 through February 17th.

This group will engage true stories that force us to think in new and unexpected ways about basic categories of human experience. To say it differently, these stories blow our minds. The stories include: Rubinstein, the “mad jester” of the Warsaw Ghetto; Chang and Eng: the original “Siamese twins’’; and American philosopher William James’s mysterious (to him) mystical experience in the Adirondack forest. Participants are invited to bring in stories that they believe have the same “mind-blowing” potential. Hank Greenspan is a psychologist, oral historian, essayist, and playwright recently retired from a teaching career at UM. He believes that to live is to schmooze. And to schmooze is to teach and to learn, together. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Tuesdays January 21 through February 25 (no class Feb. 18).

The quest to understand man’s underlying purpose has been proposed by Victor Frankl in "Man’s Search for Meaning" from which he gave his quest further definition by coining the name Logo Therapy to essentially utilize meaning to help overcome obstacles and handicaps. To establish this foundation, the instructor will first talk about definitions and how they can assist in creating common denominators but at the same time can interfere with the understanding of reality and meaning. Along with definitions, we will turn our attention to human physiology and how organs can be looked upon in alternative ways that include phenomenology. In effect, looking at organs in terms of strengths and weaknesses and how they can serve us in our quest for meaning. The Study Group for those 50 and over led by Eric Amberg is held Tuesdays January 21 through April 28.

Within a relatively short time span, online social networks have rapidly changed the way people interact, providing new opportunities to study socio-emotional dynamics. This talk will review findings from a multi-method program of research that examines how interacting with these networks influences people’s emotional lives, focusing specifically on Facebook.

Ethan Kross, PhD is an award-winning Professor of Psychology at the University of Michigan and the Director of the University of Michigan Emotion and Self-Control Laboratory. He received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and his PhD from Columbia. His research explores how people can control their emotions to improve our understanding of how self-control works, and to discover ways of enhancing self-control in daily life.

This is the third in a six-lecture series. The subject is Social Media Research: What We Know Now. The next lecture will be January 30, 2020. The title is: Restoring Justice to Targets of Online Harassment.

Cullen Washington Jr.: Abstract Meditations on the Grid and Humanity (January 23, 2020 5:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70387 70387-17594434@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 23, 2020 5:10pm

Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Cullen Washington Jr.’s work offers meditations on human interconnectivity and “the universal framework that undergirds all things.” Fusing seemingly disparate concepts via the connective tissues of mixed media, Washington uses nonrepresentational abstraction to understand order, chaos, social relationships, and other natural phenomena. The work takes audiences on a vibrant journey through and with materiality — a concerted and haptic interplay between gestures of painting and drawing and the modes of reproduction. In the exhibition Cullen Washington Jr.: The Public Square, his most recent series, Agoras, explores the “agora” — the ancient Greek public space — as a central “gathering place” for activated assembly that functions as the heart of the commercial, spiritual, and political life in the city, where the displaced can find a place. Washington’s work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and has been exhibited at the Queens Museum in New York, the Saatchi Gallery in London, and the Studio Museum in Harlem. He has been an artist in residence at Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture in Maine, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Yaddo artists’ community in New York, and the Joan Mitchell Foundation. He has also received a Joan Mitchell Foundation Award.

Presented in partnership with UMMA as part of the 2020 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Symposium.

Cullen Washington Jr.: The Public Square will be on view at UMMA January 25–May 17, 2020.

Lead support for the UMMA exhibition Cullen Washington Jr.: The Public Square is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Michigan Medicine, and the Institute for the Humanities. Additional generous support is provided by the Department of the History of Art.

Profound and often confusing transformations have taken place in the last 20 years in the way the healthcare delivery system is structured. While not all of the changes are readily apparent to patients, an understanding of them can help consumers make sense of what has happened and understand what is likely to come. A key to making sense of these changes is to understand the shifts in financial risk that have occurred between insurers, providers, and patients. Instructor Azzolini will lead the class.

Organized By: Michigan Artificial Intelligence Laboratory

Advances in Artificial Intelligence are being felt throughout society and our economy. Some of the most significant impacts are in the domain of finance, including financial markets, financial services, and the financial system more broadly. Autonomous agents have made major inroads through algorithmic trading in financial markets, and AI methods are playing an increasing role in lending decisions and detecting financial malfeasance. Understanding the implications of AI for finance is important in its own right, and as a case study for AI implications more broadly. Join Michael P. Wellman, the Lynn A. Conway Collegiate Professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Michigan, as he discusses Artificial Intelligence & finance, focusing on:

What are the ways that AI may impact finance: present and future?
What are the benefits and risks of AI in finance?
How can we understand and regulate AI systems in finance?
Michael P. Wellman received a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1988 for his work in qualitative probabilistic reasoning and decision-theoretic planning. For the past 30 years, his research has focused on computational market mechanisms and game-theoretic reasoning methods, with applications in electronic commerce, finance, and cyber-security. He is a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence and the Association for Computing Machinery.

Prof. Rada Mihalcea, Director of Michigan AI, will moderate the discussion.

Cheikh Lô is one of the great mavericks of African music. A superb singer and songwriter as well as a distinctive guitarist, percussionist and drummer he has personalised and distilled a variety of influences from West and Central Africa, to create a style that is uniquely his own. Incorporating Senegalese mbalax with elements of salsa, Zairian/Congolese rhumba, folk, and jazz, Lô has created an infectious, hook-laden style of pop music. Born in 1955, to Senegalese parents in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, not far from the border with Mali, where he grew up speaking Bambara (language of Mali), Wolof (language of Senegal) and French. At 21 he started singing and playing percussion with Orchestra Volta Jazz in Bobo Dioulasso, and spent much of the 1980s working as a session musician in both Dakar, Senegal and Paris, France, while also developing his own repertoire. In 1995, Youssou N’Dour helped to produce his second solo record, and signature sound – a semi acoustic, Spanish-tinged take on the popular mbalax style – was an instant success in Senegal, gaining him a dedicated local following and subsequent international success.

Cheikh Lô will also perform two sets at the Blue Llama Jazz Club on Saturday, January 25 (7pm & 9pm). Visit https://www.bluellamaclub.com/event/cheikh-lo for ticket information for these performances.

This Artist Q&A is co-sponsored by Center for World Performance Studies and African Studies Center.

2019 | 105 Minutes | Min-ho Cho

Free | Open to the public | In Korean with English subtitles

“Director Jo Min-ho’s “A Resistance”…focuses on the last year and a half in the life of Yu Gwan-sun, one of South Korea’s most famous and revered female freedom fighters. The film begins with the teenaged Yu Gwan-sun’s arrival at the Seodaemun Prison. Flashbacks tell us of her active participation in the organisation and execution of the March 1st Protests, one of the earliest instances of Korean public resistance against the Japanese, where she lost both of her parents and which resulted in the arrest of her elder brother and herself for shouting “Long Live the Korean Independence”. Once at Seodaemun, she is kept in Cell No.8, stuffed in with dozens other women in a room that’s barely enough for three or four people at most. Ever the free spirit, Gwan-sun continues to proclaim that she is free as long as she has free thought and refuses to give in to the demands of the Japanese to confess, much to the chagrin of the Japanese as well as Korean-origin soldier Nishida.” – RHYTHM ZAVERI, Asian Movie Pulse

How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don't understand the differences between the testable hypotheses of real science and myths, unproven "science" and fundamentalist zealotry?
In the book, "The Demon-Haunted World--Science as a Candle in the Dark", author and scientist Carl Sagan debunks fallacies such as witchcraft, faith healing, demons and UFOs. He advocates viewing all phenomena through proven facts.
Sagan focuses primarily on myths and not religion; he felt religion should not play a role in pseudoscience and he argues against fundamentalism.
We will read this book and discuss its ideas. Gerry Lapidus has led more than 50 book discussion classes at OLLI. Please read through pg. 40 (Preface, sections 1 and 2) for the first meeting.
The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Mondays January 27 through March 9.

Abstract: The words "urban" and "inner city" typically conjure up images of densely populated neighborhoods, crime, mean streets, isolation, and human struggle. Popular media plays on these representations. Missing from this familiar story are the everyday stories of goodness that occur in cities. This presentation draws on interviews with people who live in urban areas, including highly under-resourced urban areas, to explore how the human capacity for love, forgiveness and compassion emerges in everyday life in urban America. I use these stories to explore how we are all transformed by everyday encounters with love and human goodness.

Bio: Jacqueline S. Mattis, Ph.D. is Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of African American and Afri-Caribbean youth and adults, and on the factors that are associated with positive psychological development of urban residing African Americans and Afri-Caribbeans. In particular, she explores the factors that contribute to altruism, compassion, empathy, forgiveness and optimism among urban-residing African American people.

“Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” is well-known as the stirring slogan of the French Revolution. In this study group, by means of an examination of the life and thought of pre-revolutionary visionary Jean-Jacques Rousseau and of the major events of the Revolution itself, we will reflect upon and wrestle with the internal tensions and, indeed, contradictions embodied in this slogan. To what extent, for example, does the quest for liberty impinge upon the longing for equality, and vice versa? To what degree, moreover, does the craving for fraternity compromise the desire for both liberty and equality? Instructor Barry Shapiro is a French revolutionary scholar and Emeritus Professor of History, Allegheny College, Meadville, PA. Classes will meet on Tuesdays from January 28 through March 31.

Access to the French confidential microdata is now in part open for North America; a secure remote access to these data has been implemented at the ICPSR enclave where researchers can access these data in addition to German data. In this webinar, we explain which datasets are available and how researchers can gain access to these rich resources. Moreover, the German Research Data Centre (FDZ) of the German Federal Employment Agency at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) and the French Research Data Center “Centre d‘Accès Sécurisé aux Données” (CASD), in close collaboration, have evaluated cross-country comparability of data from both parts including data covering labor market issues and some other topics. As a result of this collaboration, presenters Marie-Christine Laible and Maria Alkhoury will point out the opportunities for cross-country research, and reveal a comparison of one example of similar data in depth.

Dr. Marie-Christine Laible is a researcher at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg, Germany. As a researcher at the Research Data Center (FDZ) of the Federal Employment Agency at the IAB, she works with complex administrative and survey data.

Maria Alkhoury is a political science graduate. She recently joined the French research Data Center “Centre d’accès sécurisé aux données.” As a CASD Data Manager, she guides researchers in their application procedure to access French data and controls the statistical confidentiality of the result they wish to publish.

Most social media sites sanction online harassment by removing content or banning users. However, these approaches largely write the targets of online harassment out of the justice-seeking process. If a person is harassed on social media, they are given no opportunity for acknowledgement or reparation. This talk will discuss how theories of justice can help social media sites to better support people who are targets of online harassment.

Dr. Schoenebeck is an Associate Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. She directs the Living Online Lab and co-directs the Social Media Research Lab. Her research
focuses on promoting more equitable and inclusive experiences online in domains ranging from online harassment to gender equity to children’s privacy. Her research has been covered in global media including the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR, and elsewhere.

This is the fourth in a six-lecture series. The subject is Social Media Research: What We Know Now. The next lecture will be February 5, 2020. The title is: Why We Use Social Media: Evolution, Neuroscience, and Problematic Use.

This event brings together Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget McCormack, legal scholar and practitioner Len Niehoff, and acclaimed actor John de Lancie to explore the work of the courts and the law; how the human impulse for narrative performance and drama informs the inner workings of the courtroom; and how the courtroom is represented on stage and screen.

Chief Justice Bridget McCormack joined the Michigan Supreme Court in January 2013, and became chief justice in January 2019. As the chief justice, McCormack has promoted statewide initiatives devoted to improving the courts’ service to the public, and in particular delivering on a promise that courts are independent, accessible, engaged with their communities, and efficient. Len Niehoff is a nationally prominent law practitioner, professor, and scholar in three fields: media law and the First Amendment; higher education law; and trial and appellate litigation. Niehoff is working on a book about the Salem witch trials. John de Lancie is best known for his role as “Q” on Star Trek: The Next Generation, however, his credits are numerous and include The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, The Fisher King, Breaking Bad, and The West Wing.  He was recently in a national tour of the “Scopes Monkey Trial” with Ed Asner where he played Clarence Darrow, and is the first recipient of the Clarence Darrow Award. De Lancie is currently at work on a play about the 2005 Kitzmiller vs. Dover School District trial.

Presented in partnership with University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). This event heralds Witness Lab, a project by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan. This courtroom installation is activated from February 15 through May 17, 2020, in UMMA’s Stenn Gallery.

The last film by Yasujiro Ozu was also his final masterpiece, a gently heartbreaking story about a man’s dignified resignation to life’s shifting currents and society’s modernization. Though the widower Shuhei (frequent Ozu leading man Chishu Ryu) has been living comfortably for years with his grown daughter, a series of events leads him to accept and encourage her marriage and departure from their home. As elegantly composed and achingly tender as any of the Japanese master’s films, An Autumn Afternoon is one of cinema’s fondest farewells.

“’Kim-Gun’ searches for the whereabouts of a young man whose identity has sparked a national controversy over the 1980 May 18 Gwangju Uprising. Starting with the vague memories of those who had crossed paths with him during that time, the film tracks down those who participated in the Uprising as “Citizen Soldiers.” It also traces Kim’s final steps, based on photographic clues found in the firearms he carried and the “Surveillance Truck No. 10” in which he rode. By identifying Kim-Gun, we believe that we can find valuable leads to resolving the ongoing controversy over May 18. Why did a nameless young man join the Uprising? Why did he take up arms? Where has he gone afterwards? It is the answers to these questions that the film seeks.” –Letterboxd
