Cheikh Lô is one of the great mavericks of African music. A superb singer and songwriter as well as a distinctive guitarist, percussionist and drummer he has personalised and distilled a variety of influences from West and Central Africa, to create a style that is uniquely his own. Incorporating Senegalese mbalax with elements of salsa, Zairian/Congolese rhumba, folk, and jazz, Lô has created an infectious, hook-laden style of pop music. Born in 1955, to Senegalese parents in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, not far from the border with Mali, where he grew up speaking Bambara (language of Mali), Wolof (language of Senegal) and French. At 21 he started singing and playing percussion with Orchestra Volta Jazz in Bobo Dioulasso, and spent much of the 1980s working as a session musician in both Dakar, Senegal and Paris, France, while also developing his own repertoire. In 1995, Youssou N’Dour helped to produce his second solo record, and signature sound – a semi acoustic, Spanish-tinged take on the popular mbalax style – was an instant success in Senegal, gaining him a dedicated local following and subsequent international success.

Cheikh Lô will also perform two sets at the Blue Llama Jazz Club on Saturday, January 25 (7pm & 9pm). Visit https://www.bluellamaclub.com/event/cheikh-lo for ticket information for these performances.

This Artist Q&A is co-sponsored by Center for World Performance Studies and African Studies Center.

2019 | 105 Minutes | Min-ho Cho

Free | Open to the public | In Korean with English subtitles

“Director Jo Min-ho’s “A Resistance”…focuses on the last year and a half in the life of Yu Gwan-sun, one of South Korea’s most famous and revered female freedom fighters. The film begins with the teenaged Yu Gwan-sun’s arrival at the Seodaemun Prison. Flashbacks tell us of her active participation in the organisation and execution of the March 1st Protests, one of the earliest instances of Korean public resistance against the Japanese, where she lost both of her parents and which resulted in the arrest of her elder brother and herself for shouting “Long Live the Korean Independence”. Once at Seodaemun, she is kept in Cell No.8, stuffed in with dozens other women in a room that’s barely enough for three or four people at most. Ever the free spirit, Gwan-sun continues to proclaim that she is free as long as she has free thought and refuses to give in to the demands of the Japanese to confess, much to the chagrin of the Japanese as well as Korean-origin soldier Nishida.” – RHYTHM ZAVERI, Asian Movie Pulse

How can we make intelligent decisions about our increasingly technology-driven lives if we don't understand the differences between the testable hypotheses of real science and myths, unproven "science" and fundamentalist zealotry?
In the book, "The Demon-Haunted World--Science as a Candle in the Dark", author and scientist Carl Sagan debunks fallacies such as witchcraft, faith healing, demons and UFOs. He advocates viewing all phenomena through proven facts.
Sagan focuses primarily on myths and not religion; he felt religion should not play a role in pseudoscience and he argues against fundamentalism.
We will read this book and discuss its ideas. Gerry Lapidus has led more than 50 book discussion classes at OLLI. Please read through pg. 40 (Preface, sections 1 and 2) for the first meeting.
The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Mondays January 27 through March 9.

Abstract: The words "urban" and "inner city" typically conjure up images of densely populated neighborhoods, crime, mean streets, isolation, and human struggle. Popular media plays on these representations. Missing from this familiar story are the everyday stories of goodness that occur in cities. This presentation draws on interviews with people who live in urban areas, including highly under-resourced urban areas, to explore how the human capacity for love, forgiveness and compassion emerges in everyday life in urban America. I use these stories to explore how we are all transformed by everyday encounters with love and human goodness.

Bio: Jacqueline S. Mattis, Ph.D. is Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Michigan. Her research focuses on the role of religion and spirituality in the lives of African American and Afri-Caribbean youth and adults, and on the factors that are associated with positive psychological development of urban residing African Americans and Afri-Caribbeans. In particular, she explores the factors that contribute to altruism, compassion, empathy, forgiveness and optimism among urban-residing African American people.

“Liberty, Equality, Fraternity” is well-known as the stirring slogan of the French Revolution. In this study group, by means of an examination of the life and thought of pre-revolutionary visionary Jean-Jacques Rousseau and of the major events of the Revolution itself, we will reflect upon and wrestle with the internal tensions and, indeed, contradictions embodied in this slogan. To what extent, for example, does the quest for liberty impinge upon the longing for equality, and vice versa? To what degree, moreover, does the craving for fraternity compromise the desire for both liberty and equality? Instructor Barry Shapiro is a French revolutionary scholar and Emeritus Professor of History, Allegheny College, Meadville, PA. Classes will meet on Tuesdays from January 28 through March 31.

In this webinar, we explain which datasets are available and how researchers can gain access to these rich resources. Moreover, the German Research Data Centre (FDZ) of the German Federal Employment Agency at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) and the French Research Data Center “Centre d‘Accès Sécurisé aux Données” (CASD), in close collaboration, have evaluated cross-country comparability of data from both parts including data covering labor market issues and some other topics. As a result of this collaboration, presenters Marie-Christine Laible and Maria Alkhoury will point out the opportunities for cross-country research, and reveal a comparison of one example of similar data in depth.

Dr. Marie-Christine Laible is a researcher at the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) in Nuremberg, Germany. As a researcher at the Research Data Center (FDZ) of the Federal Employment Agency at the IAB, she works with complex administrative and survey data.

Maria Alkhoury is a political science graduate. She recently joined the French research Data Center “Centre d’accès sécurisé aux données.” As a CASD Data Manager, she guides researchers in their application procedure to access French data and controls the statistical confidentiality of the result they wish to publish.

Most social media sites sanction online harassment by removing content or banning users. However, these approaches largely write the targets of online harassment out of the justice-seeking process. If a person is harassed on social media, they are given no opportunity for acknowledgement or reparation. This talk will discuss how theories of justice can help social media sites to better support people who are targets of online harassment.

Dr. Schoenebeck is an Associate Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. She directs the Living Online Lab and co-directs the Social Media Research Lab. Her research
focuses on promoting more equitable and inclusive experiences online in domains ranging from online harassment to gender equity to children’s privacy. Her research has been covered in global media including the New York Times, the Washington Post, NPR, and elsewhere.

This is the fourth in a six-lecture series. The subject is Social Media Research: What We Know Now. The next lecture will be February 5, 2020. The title is: Why We Use Social Media: Evolution, Neuroscience, and Problematic Use.

Chief Justice Bridget McCormack, Len Niehoff, and John de Lancie: Theater of Justice (January 30, 2020 5:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70388 70388-17594435@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 30, 2020 5:10pm

This event brings together Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Bridget McCormack, legal scholar and practitioner Len Niehoff, and acclaimed actor John de Lancie to explore the work of the courts and the law; how the human impulse for narrative performance and drama informs the inner workings of the courtroom; and how the courtroom is represented on stage and screen.

Chief Justice Bridget McCormack joined the Michigan Supreme Court in January 2013, and became chief justice in January 2019. As the chief justice, McCormack has promoted statewide initiatives devoted to improving the courts’ service to the public, and in particular delivering on a promise that courts are independent, accessible, engaged with their communities, and efficient. Len Niehoff is a nationally prominent law practitioner, professor, and scholar in three fields: media law and the First Amendment; higher education law; and trial and appellate litigation. Niehoff is working on a book about the Salem witch trials. John de Lancie is best known for his role as “Q” on Star Trek: The Next Generation, however, his credits are numerous and include The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, The Fisher King, Breaking Bad, and The West Wing.  He was recently in a national tour of the “Scopes Monkey Trial” with Ed Asner where he played Clarence Darrow, and is the first recipient of the Clarence Darrow Award. De Lancie is currently at work on a play about the 2005 Kitzmiller vs. Dover School District trial.

Presented in partnership with University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA). This event heralds Witness Lab, a project by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan. This courtroom installation is activated from February 15 through May 17, 2020, in UMMA’s Stenn Gallery.

The last film by Yasujiro Ozu was also his final masterpiece, a gently heartbreaking story about a man’s dignified resignation to life’s shifting currents and society’s modernization. Though the widower Shuhei (frequent Ozu leading man Chishu Ryu) has been living comfortably for years with his grown daughter, a series of events leads him to accept and encourage her marriage and departure from their home. As elegantly composed and achingly tender as any of the Japanese master’s films, An Autumn Afternoon is one of cinema’s fondest farewells.

“’Kim-Gun’ searches for the whereabouts of a young man whose identity has sparked a national controversy over the 1980 May 18 Gwangju Uprising. Starting with the vague memories of those who had crossed paths with him during that time, the film tracks down those who participated in the Uprising as “Citizen Soldiers.” It also traces Kim’s final steps, based on photographic clues found in the firearms he carried and the “Surveillance Truck No. 10” in which he rode. By identifying Kim-Gun, we believe that we can find valuable leads to resolving the ongoing controversy over May 18. Why did a nameless young man join the Uprising? Why did he take up arms? Where has he gone afterwards? It is the answers to these questions that the film seeks.” –Letterboxd

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: UKirk@UMich

Join us for a monthly Taizé Prayer Service with First Pres Ann Arbor, now held virtually.

What is a Taizé Service?

This style of worship was developed at Taizé, a monastic community located in Taizé, France, founded in the 1940’s by a Swiss named Roger Louis Schütz-Marsauche or Brother Roger. The “brothers” of the community have taken a vow of celibacy and are committed to a lifetime of simplicity, service, and community. There is an ecumenical emphasis at Taizé, which says the community “wants its life to be a sign of reconciliation between divided Christians and between separated peoples.”

A Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, a period of silence, liturgical readings, and icons. There is no preaching. The style of prayer practiced at Taizé has attracted many worshipers from around the globe and from many different denominations. The prayers consist of “short chants, repeated again and again,” according to an introduction in a Taizé songbook. “The words are sung over many times.”

Taizé Services have been a practice of worshipping here at First Pres on Ash Wednesday. All are welcome!

Jim Ottaviani

Jim Ottaviani comes to the library to launch (no pun intended) his new book : Astronauts: Women on the Final Frontier. In this graphic novel Ottaviani and illustrator Maris Wicks capture the great humor and incredible drive of Mary Cleave, Valentina Tereshkova, and the first women in space.

The U.S. may have put the first man on the moon, but it was the Soviet space program that made Valentina Tereshkova the first woman in space. It took years to catch up, but soon NASA’s first female astronauts were racing past milestones of their own. The trail-blazing women of Group 9, NASA’s first mixed gender class, had the challenging task of convincing the powers that be that a woman’s place is in space, but they discovered that NASA had plenty to learn about how to make space travel possible for everyone.

This event is in partnership with Literati Bookstore and includes a signing with books for sale.

Jim Jarmusch and Carter Logan: SQÜRL (February 4, 2020 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70389 70389-17594436@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 4, 2020 7:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Special Event: Tuesday, February 4, 7:00pm / Michigan Theater, 603 E Liberty St, Ann Arbor, MI 48104

Acclaimed filmmaker Jim Jarmusch (Stranger Than Paradise, Down by Law, and Mystery Train) and multi-instrumentalist Carter Logan perform together as SQÜRL, a self-described “enthusiastically marginal rock band from New York City who like big drums and distorted guitars, cassette recorders, loops, feedback, sad country songs, molten stoner core, chopped and screwed hip-hop.” Logan works with Jarmusch as a producer and composer with credits including The Dead Don’t Die, Only Lovers Left Alive, Paterson, and Broken Flowers.

For this Speaker Series event, they will perform a live score to silent films by Dadaist and Surrealist artist Man Ray in addition to new sonic projects. Using loops, analogue synthesizers, and effected guitars, the duo create a semi-improvised ambient score for four of Man Ray’s dreamlike films. Of the project, Jarmusch says: “Man Ray’s films are very kinetic in the way they move. It’s like a kind of dream logic. Man Ray loves little details of daily life as the Surrealists did. He likes these strange things. A starfish in a jar. Or a scattering of a tailor’s pins” (Metro Times).

Supported by the University of Michigan Library, the Department of Film, Television, and Media, and the Ann Arbor Film Festival.

Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy has been clinically proven to be at least as effective as drugs for depression - in other words, it works! And it's not just for depression; it also works for people who are not depressed but who are struggling to keep up with the constant demands of this frantic world.
It promotes the kind of happiness and peace that gets into our bones. Mindfulness reveals a set of simple yet powerful practices that help break the cycle of anxiety, stress, unhappiness, and exhaustion.
We're going to be using the book "Mindfulness: An Eight-Week Plan for Finding Peace in a Frantic World" by Mark Williams and Danny Pennman.
This will be a six-week program. The class will be partly lecture, but you can look forward to lively discussions.
Mike Murray, a Clinical Psychologist, has taught mindfulness classes for OLLI for over ten years. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held Wednesdays February 5 through March 11.

Around two decades ago, Internet pioneers created online platforms that allow users to create profiles and interact with others. Today, almost 3 billion people worldwide use these social networking sites, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. This talk will explain why we are driven to use these sites, the neuroscience underlying our use of these sites, and how social media use may become excessive and problematic.

Prof. Dar Meshi is a cognitive neuroscientist investigating problematic social media use and how the brain processes social information. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Michigan State University in the Department of Advertising and Public Relations. He is also a faculty member in the Neuroscience Program. Prof. Meshi earned his B.S. in biology from the University of California at Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. from Columbia University in New York.

This is the fifth in a six-lecture series. The subject is Social Media Research: What We Know Now. The next lecture will be February 13, 2020. The title is: Is Technology Killing Privacy?

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) has a new program option known as a Shared Interest Group (SIG). A SIG brings people together who have a common interest that they wish to pursue indefinitely within a structure of meetings and activities designed primarily by the members of the group.

A SIG does not have a formal class syllabus. Members of a SIG determine the content and discussion of a SIG. A designated facilitator arranges meetings, takes attendance, and initiates the discussion among the SIG members on how the group will operate.

This group will meet to share time together working on their individual projects, be they knitting, embroidery, lace-making, crochet, needlepoint, or others. Encouraging interest in learning new skills, completing projects already underway, while enjoying each other’s company shall be chief goals of this Interest Group.

This Shared Interest Group will meet on the first Thursday of every month and be facilitated by Marcia Hallstrom & Marge Higley.

Following the collapse of his clan, an unemployed samurai (Tatsuya Nakadai) arrives at the manor of Lord Iyi, begging to be allowed to commit ritual suicide on the property. Iyi’s clansmen, believing the desperate ronin is merely angling for a new position, try to force his hand and get him to eviscerate himself—but they have underestimated his beliefs and his personal brand of honor. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s Special Jury Prize, Harakiri, directed by Masaki Kobayashi is a fierce evocation of individual agency in the face of a corrupt and hypocritical system.

Alvin Youngblood Hart calls himself "the Cosmic American Love Child Of Howlin' Wolf and Link Wray." What this means for you is a blues show with no boundaries and plenty of energy. An admirer of blues category-crosser Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Hart drops country, ska, and more into his shows without breaking a sweat. And at the root of it all is some great finger-picking Delta blues guitar. Whether he's playing a solo acoustic show or fronting an electric band, this Oakland-born guitarist who has appeared in films by both Wim Wenders ("The Soul of a Man") and Martin Scoreses ("The Blues") is a monster creative figure, and every show of his is an adventure ride. It's been many years since we last heard Alvin Youngblood Hart at The Ark, so don't delay on tickets for this.

Voters Not Politicians (VNP) is the nonpartisan grassroots citizens group that led the 2018 ballot initiative to pass an anti-gerrymandering constitutional amendment. The amendment established an Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission to draw maps for Michigan electoral districts: U.S. Congress and the State House and Senate. VNP is now working to ensure success for the Commission and it is also pursuing other initiatives to enhance democracy. These 3 classes will explain what VNP has accomplished, how VNP created a unique volunteer experience, and how citizens can continue to improve our democracy. Participants will learn how they can participate productively in making Michigan government work better.

Connie Cook has a Ph.D. in Political Science and recently retired from the University of Michigan. She now serves in a volunteer role as Regional Education Coordinator and Special Counsel to the Executive Director of Voters Not Politicians. Rena Basch has a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, and fifteen years-experience as an elections administrator, serving as the Ann Arbor Charter Township Clerk. During the VNP campaign for Proposal 2, Rena led the state-wide Outreach Committee, and currently volunteers as the leader of Community Engagement. Connie and Rena will be joined by additional VNP volunteers in sessions on Fridays from February 7 through 21.

“For we must consider that we shall be as a City upon a Hill, the eyes of all people are upon us,” declared John Winthrop as he travelled with his followers to Massachusetts in 1630. He marked the beginning of what was expected to be a grand experiment. Winthrop rightly anticipated that the colonial endeavors unfolding in North America presented a chance for self-determination, collective identity, and industriousness. And yet, he could not have conceived of the legacy of that experiment or the challenges that would come with it. In this study group, we will explore how diverse writers represented, challenged, and helped to create the dominant cultural narratives that remain influential in our nation today. We will read (in the following order): Charles Brockden Brown’s Wieland, Susanna Rowson’s Charlotte Temple, Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The House of the Seven Gables, Herman Melville’s Benito Cereno, Frank Norris’s McTeague, and John Niehardt’s Black Elk Speaks. Instructor Emelia Abbe-Robertson will lead classes on Fridays from February 7 through March 20.

Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Activist Love Letters is a participatory performance & workshop with artist Syrus Marcus Ware that invites participants to think about their role in sustaining a movement and supporting their communities. If you could reach out to one person who moves you by what they do, who would it be? What would you say?

This event is presented in partnership with the U-M Trotter Multicultural Center and the Spectrum Center LGBTQ Health & Wellness Week. Activist Love Letters will be held in the Sankofa Lounge. Refreshments will be served.

Syrus Marcus Ware is a Vanier Scholar, visual artist, community activist, researcher, youth-advocate and educator. For 12 years, he was the Coordinator of the Art Gallery of Ontario Youth Program. Syrus is currently a facilitator/designer for the Cultural Leaders Lab (Toronto Arts Council & The Banff Centre) and is the inaugural artist-in-residence for Daniels Spectrum (2016/2017). He is a core-team member of Black Lives Matter Toronto.

As a visual artist, Syrus works within the mediums of painting, installation and performance to challenge systemic oppression. Syrus’ work explores the spaces between and around identities; acting as provocations to our understandings of gender, sexuality and race. His work has been exhibited at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the Art Gallery of Windsor, the University of Lethbridge Art Gallery, Art Gallery of York University (AGYU), Gladstone Hotel, ASpace Gallery, Harbourfront Centre, SPIN Gallery and other galleries across Canada. Syrus holds degrees in Art History, Visual Studies and a Masters in Sociology and Equity Studies, University of Toronto. “Many crimes every year go undiscovered for different reasons, sometimes just because they are not discovered, other times because sadly nobody cares about the victims. It is what criminologists call the “dark figure of crime”, that opaque amount of unreported and consequentially uncared-for, crimes. Shifting the point of interest from the killer to the victims is what makes Kim Tae-kyun’s new film “Dark Figure of Crime” stand out from the abundance of South Korean serial killer movies. Based on a true story, the project was inspired by a TV program called “Unanswered” whose incredible quantity of source cases made director Kim Tae-kyun think about the families of the vanished victims and their suspended lives in a limbo of uncertainty, as he told us in the Q&A after the screening.” – ADRIANA ROSATI, Asian Movie Pulse

Michigan Emmy award-winning songwriter Kitty Donohoe was born into a large, creative family outside of Detroit and has been ‘making up’ songs for as long as she can remember. Describing her music as ‘folky, bluesy, Irishy, American, Canadianish’, she draws from her roots to create music that is uniquely her own ~ music that’s "haunting, melodic and literate" (All Music Guide_. With a love of language, an innate sense of melody, and the soul of a storyteller, she backs herself on piano, guitar and cittern with equal finesse, but she sees these skills as mostly providing the foundation for the music she writes, both songs and instrumentals. Kitty’s latest CD, The Irishman’s Daughter, combines her original pieces with some traditional music and is getting great reviews.

Dr. Awdish’s near-death experience revealed a dark hole at the center of what was otherwise highly-proficient, astoundingly skillful care. What she learned was that, though the healing potential of knowledge is magical, it is also a lie: Medicine cannot heal in a vacuum; it requires connection. Her talk will focus on what is needed to heal medicine, and how medical training distances physician from patients. Ultimately, it is only by giving primacy to the patient narrative, building resilience in the physician, and forming a community that we can hope to reunite the pieces into a cohesive whole, with the power to heal us all.

Detroit, Michigan. She serves as Medical Director for both Care Experience and the Pulmonary Hypertension Program. In addition to her critically acclaimed, bestselling memoir, In Shock, she also has written for the Harvard Business Review, Huffington Post, and the New England Journal of Medicine. In 2017, she was named National Compassionate Caregiver of the Year by the Schwartz Foundation, and Physician of the Year by Press Ganey. Her work focuses on improving healthcare for both providers and patients, through compassionate communication, medical humanities, and finding joy in our shared purpose.

This is the fifth in a series of ten lectures covering various topics. One lecture is presented on the second Tuesday of each month during the academic year. The next lecture will be March 10, 2020. The title is: What About Weed? The Cannabis Controversy, Past, Present, and Future.

We urgently need a robust national conversation about the serious and imminent challenges facing the 2020 Census, underscoring the important role it plays in the political, economic and civic life of the nation. To avoid a failed count, we need strong, fact-based reporting to fuel this conversation, and to perhaps point to potential solutions and opportunities. But these are complicated issues, requiring knowledge from local communities as well as subject area experts. With support from the Knight Foundation, Prof. Mark Hansen of Columbia Journalism School and Prof. Mike Ananny from USC Annenberg School for Communication have started a project to help local newsrooms pair with academic researchers including social scientists, demographers, computer scientists and data scientists providing help to newsrooms as they find impactful, local stories about the census.

Presented by Dr. Mark Hansen, Director of the Brown Institute at Columbia Journalism School and ICPSR (at the U-M Institute for Social Research) Council Member.

The Mystery Book Club is all about mysteries. Mysteries are the only genre of literature where an author offers readers a chance to figure out the story for themselves. We all love identifying the villain before he or she’s revealed. But some authors do this better than others.

Our book club is unique in that we seek out authors who are not really in the public eye and then critique their ability to do just that, i.e. spin a tale that keeps the reader engrossed right up to the last page. We do have a long list of authors that our members have expressed an interest in reading. Each month we pick a different author from that list. Everyone is then free to read any number of this author’s works that they choose and submit their evaluation to the group at our meeting.

Opinions given are quite honest, always enlightening, and the resulting discussions are always lively. Each person’s review of the author ends by answering the question: “Would you recommend this author to a friend?”

This Shared Interest will be facilitated by Sydney Kaufman and will meet the second Wednesday of every month.

Privacy is dead! Or is it? This talk will explore the darker side of social media, smartphones, smart speakers. How and why do these technologies track your behavior online and in your homes? What can they know about you? Why do people struggle to protect their privacy? The talk further discusses research advances that can lead to better privacy protections and user controls, and what you can do now to take back your privacy.

Florian Schaub is Assistant Professor in the University of Michigan School of Information. His research combines privacy, human-computer interaction, emerging technologies, and public policy. He studies people’s privacy decision making and behavior, investigates technology-related privacy implications, and develops user-centric privacy solutions that help people better manage their privacy in technology contexts. Dr. Schaub holds a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Ulm, and was a postdoctoral fellow at Carnegie Mellon University.

This is the last in a six-lecture series. The subject is Social Media Research: What We Know Now. The next series will start February 20, 2020.The subject is The Power of Art.

Amanda Williams is a visual artist who trained as an architect. Her practice blurs the distinction between art and architecture through works that employ color as a way to draw attention to the political complexities of race, place and value in cities. The landscapes in which she operates are the visual residue of the invisible policies and forces that have misshapen most inner cities. Williams’s installations, paintings, video, and works on paper seek to inspire new ways of looking at the familiar, and in the process, raise questions about the state of urban space in America. Amanda has exhibited widely, including the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale, a solo exhibition at the MCA Chicago, The Art Institute of Chicago and the Pulitzer Arts Foundation in St. Louis. She is a a 2018 United States Artists Fellow, a Joan Mitchell Foundation Painters & Sculptors grantee, an Efroymson Family Arts Fellow, a Leadership Greater Chicago Fellow and a member of the multidisciplinary Museum Design team for the Obama Presidential Center. She is this year’s Bill and Stephanie Sick Distinguished Visiting Professor at the School of the Art Institute Chicago and has previously served as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Architecture at Cornell University and Washington University in St. Louis. She lives and works on Chicago’s south side.

Andres L. Hernandez is a Chicago-based artist, designer and educator who re-imagines the environments we inhabit, and explores the potential of spaces for public dialogue and social action. Hernandez is a 2018 Efroymson Contemporary Arts Fellow, and his recent projects include a 2018-2019 visiting artist residency with the University of Arizona School of Art, and Thrival Geographies (In My Mind I See A Line), a commissioned installation in collaboration with artists Amanda Williams and Shani Crowe for the U.S. Pavilion at the 2018 Venice Architecture Biennale. Hernandez is co-founder of the Revival Arts Collective, founder and director of the Urban Vacancy Research Initiative, and exhibition design team member for the Museum of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, IL. He received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Cornell University and a Master of Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he is an Associate Professor.

After their unscrupulous master is arrested, servant girl Osen and penniless young Sokichi must fend for themselves. They live together in Meiji-era Tokyo, and Osen’s love drives her to pay Sokichi’s way through medical school, finally turning to secret streetwalking on his behalf. Told in an elaborate flashback structure, The Downfall of Osen has been singled out as a transitional film that bridges director Kenji Mizoguchi’s early and middle periods, as well as the silent and sound eras.

Cinematographer: Shigeto Miki. Miki was Mizoguchi’s cameraman for all of his 1930s films. Miki started his career in 1916, when he shot his first film at the age of 14! After working for Mizoguchi for years, he was Makino Masahiro’s cameraman for the 40s through 60s.

This silent movie will be accompanied by a live benshi. At the birth of cinema, lecturers always accompanied silent films, but as films became complex enough to tell stories the lecturers disappeared – except in Japan. Silent films in Japan (and its colonies) had both live music and a benshi, who would stand to the left of the screen imitating voices and providing spectacular narration. The live benshi performer will be Kataoka Ichiro, Japan’s premiere benshi. Ichiro was in Ann Arbor for a season of silent Ozu some years ago, and tonight he will narrate Mizoguchi’s classic film.

Carbon pricing in the form of carbon taxes or cap-and-trade has been broadly embraced by economists for decades as the best policy option for mitigating the threat of climate change. But carbon pricing has struggled politically in the United States and abroad. It remains among the least likely climate policies to be adopted and among the most likely to be reversed if approved.

This lecture by Professor Barry Rabe will examine political challenges across each stage of the policy life-cycle, considering not only the impediments to carbon pricing, but also key design elements of the more successful and durable policies to date.

Professor Barry Rabe, J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Professor of Public Policy at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, is a political scientist trained at the University of Chicago. He is a non-resident senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and an elected fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration. He is also the author of five books, including “Can We Price Carbon?” (MIT Press, 2018) and is the recipient of four research awards from the American Political Science Association.

This is lecture #2 in five-part series "Facing the Future: The Challenge of Climate Change" which explores how climate change is impacting every corner of our earth, and every aspect of our lives.

EEB Museums Friday Seminar - How do quantitative genetics enhance our understanding of morphological evolution (February 14, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72448 72448-18007182@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 14, 2020 2:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Ecology and Evolutionary Biology

Evolutionary quantitative genetics provides a strong theoretical framework for connecting evolutionary processes, the underlying genetic architecture of traits, described in terms of variances and covariances, and the pace and direction of multivariate evolution. In this talk I will discuss the importance of considering a multidimensional phenotype and the within-species (co)variation to understand trait dynamics in populations, in terms of evolvability (i.e., the ability of a biological system to respond to selection) and evolutionary constraints. I will explore the evolution of the cranial covariance structure and the average morphology in the most noteworthy example of adaptive radiation in mammals, the New World leaf-nosed bats, by combining phylogenetic comparative methods and quantitative genetic approaches.

“At the centre of Soyoung Kim’s 2017 documentary “Goodbye My Love, North Korea (Gutbai mai leobeu NK)” is a group of eight North Korean filmmakers who sought political asylum in the Soviet Union in 1958. Initially sent to study at the Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (or VGIK) in 1952, the eight were critical of the Kim Il-sung regime and its consolidation of power following the 1956 August Faction Incident. Calling themselves the 8-Jin (paljin) or “Genuine 8,” the eight christened themselves both as individuals (with new surnames) and as a group with the Chinese character for truth, 眞. Truth, and especially filmic truth, is just one of “Goodbye My Love’s” many concerns, as it deploys historical found footage of the Soviet Union and North Korea, film clips, dramatic reenactments, readings of poetry and prose, as well as folk songs in relaying the account of the 8-Jin. But the bulk of the work falls on the shoulders of the two surviving members, cinematographer Kim Jong-hun (Kim Jin) and director Choi Kuk-in (Choi Jin), who are joined by Zinida Ivanova, widow to writer Han Dae-yong (Han Jin). Interviews with the three present an overview of the group’s experience from the Korean War to their initial study abroad, their public criticism of Kim Il-sung, to exile and beyond.” –SE-YOUNG KIM, The University of British Columbia Film Reviews, Northeast Asia

Did you hate math at school? Did it consist of rote learning, sheer drudgery, and application of procedures and formulas you did not understand? Did you solve quadratic equations or simultaneous equations or trigonometry by the “miracle method”— plug in the formula given you, and the right answer miraculously appears? Welcome to the “real” mathematics; there are “aha” moments, challenges to logical thinking, and an appreciation of beautiful logical structure. We do real mathematics requiring only the simplest minimal background, and show some applications to real life. The Study Group for those 50 and over led by Fred Beutler is held on Monday February 17.

Courtney McClellan: Observer v. Witness (February 17, 2020 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70391 70391-17594438@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 17, 2020 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Special Event: Monday, February 17, 5:30pm / Helmut Stern Auditorium, UMMA, 525 S State St, Ann Arbor 48109

Courtney McClellan is an artist and writer from Greensboro, North Carolina, and the 2019-2020 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. Her work addresses public ritual, institutional space, and objects that invite or demand speech. Her explorations result in sculpture, performance, installation, writing, and video. Her studio practice includes experimenting with materials, but also reaches into fields such as law, theater, and journalism. For the past five years she has studied legal simulation.

At UMMA, McClellan will mount Witness Lab, an architectural courtroom installation and performance series. The facsimile courtroom located in the glassed-in Stenn Gallery will host legal simulations from participating groups including the Trial Advocacy Society and the Oral Argument Competition from the University of Michigan Law School, as well as the undergraduate team of the Collegiate American Mock Trial Association. Additionally, court transcript readings and trial advocacy workshops will be performed in the gallery. Stamps students will observe and document the courtroom activity through drawing, text, photography, and video. The accumulated documents will result in a publication.

Witness Lab offers audiences a complex truth. By studying the courtroom as a space of performance, and the lawyers as agents of justice, participants and passersby consider the physical and social architecture of the law.

Presented in partnership with University of Michigan Museum of Art (UMMA), presenting Witness Lab, a project by Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence Courtney McClellan. This courtroom installation is activated from February 15 through May 17, 2020. Lead support for Witness Lab is provided by the University of Michigan Law School and the Office of the Provost.

Nam Center film presentation | Shusenjo: The Main Battleground of the Comfort Women Issue (February 17, 2020 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72725 72725-18068360@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 17, 2020 7:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Nam Center for Korean Studies

Director Miki Dezaki will lead a Q & A after the film!

Shusenjo is one of the most controversial films in the last decade, inspiring both lawsuits and bomb scares and death threats. It delves deep into the most contentious debates and uncovers the hidden intentions of the supporters and detractors of comfort women. Most importantly it finds answers to some of the biggest questions for Japanese and Koreans: Were comfort women prostitutes or sex slaves? Were they coercively recruited? And, does Japan have a legal responsibility to apologize to the former comfort women?

The “comfort women” issue is perhaps Japan’s most contentious present-day diplomatic quandary. Inside Japan, the issue is dividing the country across clear ideological lines. Supporters and detractors of “comfort women” are caught in a relentless battle over empirical evidence, the validity of oral testimony, the number of victims, the meaning of sexual slavery, and the definition of coercive recruitment. Credibility, legitimacy and influence serve as the rallying cry for all those involved in the battle. In addition, this largely domestic battleground has been shifted to the international arena, commanding the participation of various state and non-state actors and institutions from all over the world.

About the Director: Miki Dezaki is a Japanese-American director and graduate of the Graduate Program in Global Studies at Sophia University in Tokyo. He worked for the Japan Exchange Teaching Program for five years in Yamanashi and Okinawa before becoming a Buddhist monk in Thailand for one year. He is also known as “Medamasensei” on Youtube, where he has made comedy videos and videos on social issues in Japan. His most notable video is “Racism in Japan,” which led to numerous online attacks by Japanese neo-nationalists who attempted to deny the existence of racism and discrimination against Zainichi Koreans (Koreans with permanent residency in Japan) and Burakumin (historical outcasts still discriminated today). Shusenjo is his directorial debut.

Presented in Japanese, Korean and English with English subtitles.

Daniel Herwitz will be presenting an essay on the current and controversial topic of repatriation: the return of objects from European and American museums to their sites of origin. France has recently committed itself to the return of a significant number of objects to African nations, Greece has long demanded the return of the Elgin Marbles and not got them, the University of Michigan's Museum of Anthropology has repatriated native American burial remains back to Native American communities. The question of repatriation is--the essay will show--a window into larger and more luminous issues of intellectual and cultural property, demanding cosmopolitan negotiation in the name of historical justice.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Lifestage Environmental Exposures and Disease Center

In conjunction with the Feb 20 symposium, "From PBB to PFAS: Research and Action to Address Michigan’s Large-Scale Chemical Contaminations" this FREE event is sponsored by the National Wildlife Foundation and the Michigan League of Conservation Voters.

"No Defense" is a documentary that tells the story of the Americans who are fighting against one of the largest-known polluters in the country — the United States government. Since the 1990s, it’s been documented that a category of chemicals known as perfluorinated compounds (PFAS) are harmful to life, yet the government continues to mandate its use at hundreds of sites across the country, contaminating surface water and drinking water, with no plan in place to clean it up. This film highlights the people who are suffering, who are blowing the whistle, and who are fighting the United States military’s war on water.

The film focuses on the PFAS contamination problem in Oscoda, Michigan, as a case study into how the U.S. military has failed to protect human health and the environment around the nation and the world. The PFAS contamination in Oscoda was discovered nearly 10 years ago, making it the first PFAS site in Michigan and the first PFAS military site in the world. The film's director, Sara Ganim, is a former CNN correspondent who won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking the Jerry Sandusky sex abuse scandal at Penn State; she also has done extensive reporting on water issues in other communities in the U.S, including Flint.

Documentary. 270 min. Including Filmmaker Q&A. NR.

No Defense is directed by Pulitzer-Prize winning journalist Sara Ganim. Produced by Emmy-award winning journalist Lennart Bourin. Executive Producer Robert P. Ufer.

Film will be followed by a Filmmaker Q&A.

Joe Pug has collected plenty of the requisite Dylan comparisons over his career, but in his new music it's easier to hear the sway of contemporary influences from the likes of The Milk Carton Kids' Kenneth Pattengale, who produced Joe's new album. :The Flood In Color” has been nearly four years in the making. But the album started with the goal of focusing on the simplicity of musicians playing together, live, in the same room. Recently relocating back to his childhood home in Prince Georges County, Maryland after many years spent in Chicago and Austin, Joe wanted take a new approach. The partnership with Pattengale proved to be an irresistible opportunity to do just that. Come and check out this new direction from an Ark favorite! Matthew Wright opens.

Professor Sparling shares his late-career discovery of painting and how it has become a seamless translation of everything he’s learned as musician, poet, dancer/choreographer, and video artist. Six years ago, he began to translate his body knowledge via the stroke of the paint brush: to experience how that stroke issues from the same impulses that guide his dancing body. For him, there is no difference in their creative processes and in the essential act of making art.

Peter Sparling is Rudolf Arnheim Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Dance at the University of Michigan. A graduate of Interlochen Arts Academy and the Juilliard School, Sparling danced with the companies of Jose Limon and Martha Graham and directed Peter Sparling Dance Company. His videos have been screened globally, including festivals in New York City, Lisbon, and Paris. He is a published poet/essayist and has shown his paintings in three solo exhibits.

This is the first in a six-lecture series. The subject is the Power of Art. The next lecture will be February 27, 2020. The title is: The Art and Science of Creating a New Museum.

Note: This presentation will take place at Rackham Auditorium, 915 Washington St., Ann Arbor, MI.

As one of America’s most performed composers, David Lang has “solidified his standing as an American master,” as The New Yorker puts it. His catalog of work is extensive, and his opera, orchestra, chamber, and solo works are by turns ominous, ethereal, urgent, hypnotic, unsettling, and emotionally direct. In 2008, the New York-based composer was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for the little match girl passion, a score for four voices and a few percussion instruments, played by the singers, based on the children’s story by Hans Christian Andersen. Additionally, Lang’s score for Paolo Sorrentino’s film Youth received Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations, among others. Other recent work includes man made, a concerto co-commissioned by the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the BBC Symphony; the loser, an opera based on the novel by Thomas Bernhard, which opened the 2016 Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music; and prisoner of the state, an opera co-commissioned by the New York Philharmonic, De Doelen concert hall in the Netherlands, the Barbican Centre in London, l’Auditori concert hall in Barcelona, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra in Germany, the Concertgebouw in Belgium, and Malmö Opera in Sweden. Lang is co-founder and co-artistic director of Bang on a Can, a New York-based organization dedicated to the support of experimental music.

David Lang’s appearance is courtesy of the William Bolcom Guest Residency at the U-M School of Music, Theater, and Dance.

In this jazzy gangster film, reformed killer Tetsu’s attempt to go straight is thwarted when his former cohorts call him back to Tokyo to help battle a rival gang. Director Seijun Suzuki’s onslaught of stylized violence and trippy colors is equal parts Russ Meyer, Samuel Fuller, and Nagisa Oshima—an anything-goes, in-your-face rampage. Tokyo Drifter is a delirious highlight of the brilliantly excessive Japanese cinema of the sixties.

“Downstream from Here” by Charles Eisendrath (February 21, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/70597 70597-17609141@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 21, 2020 10:00am

Tom Brokaw calls Eisendrath “a reporter’s reporter” and the book, “lyrical.” Jeff Daniels adds “prepare to be inspired.” Ellen Goodman says, “Too often we are told we have to choose between living wide or living deep, between traveling across the surface of the earth, or coming to truly know and love one place. But Charles Eisendrath has done both in his rich life. This is the memoir of a foreign correspondent and journalism mentor and yet a man who is spiritually rooted at his beloved Overlook Farm. The essays he has written about this life are a joy!”

Charles R. Eisendrath grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, in a family that had vacationed in Charlevoix County since the 1890’s. One of the loves of his life is Overlook Farm near East Jordan, Michigan, which produces timber, maple syrup, and tart cherries. He is a passionate sportsman and canoeist. Many of those subjects are the focus of “Downstream from Here: A Big Life in a Small Place”. It is a collection of essays originally intended as a personal history to be shared with friends and family. It is a meditation on a life well lived, a deep love of family, and the love of a very specific place in the world.

Eisendrath was the first Director of the Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellowships at the University of Michigan. He is a Yale graduate, a former Time magazine correspondent, and founder of the Livingston Awards, known as the Pulitzer Prize for journalists under 35 and known for providing early recognition for major talents.

Join the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies and the Rackham Program in Public Scholarship as we hit the road to engage history on display at the Detroit Historical Museum. Stepping outside of our regular meeting place, we will spend time examining questions of audience and public engagement. Using the museum’s exhibits on Detroit’s early history and the 1967 rebellion, as a starting point, this event aims to spark conversations with Detroit Historical Society staff about the meaning of historical work in the public sphere. We will consider the benefits of doing historical work in public and the landscape of public history in general, as it continues to shift in response to current events, community advocacy, and scholarship.

Presenters/discussants:
Joel Stone (Senior Curator, Detroit Historical Society)
Kalisha Davis (Director of Community Outreach and Engagement, Detroit Historical Society)
Billy Wall-Winkel (Assistant Curator, Detroit Historical Society)

This event is part of the Friday Series of the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies. It is made possible by a generous contribution from Kenneth and Frances Aftel Eisenberg. Presented in partnership with the Rackham Program in Public Scholarship.

The Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is a global campaign to improve representation of cis and transgender women, feminism, and the arts on Wikipedia. It is a communal editing event that focuses on recognizing the accomplishments of women and non-binary people and collectives in arts and activism. There will be a talk and live DJ set by Detroit-based artist, educator and community organizer, Mother Cyborg. It is presented in partnership with the U-M Libraries.

About Mother Cyborg

Born in Chicago, raised in the small town of Frankfort, Indiana, transplanted to Detroit in 2008 38-year-old Diana Nucera is Mother Cyborg. Nucera’s day job involves working in accessible technology education, and she has a background in teaching high school students in media and audio production and is the director of the Community Technology Project. Her stage name is Mother Cyborg. She DJs under the same name at her monthly gig at Temple Bar, appropriately named Temple of Cyborg.

Detroit has influenced the way in which she sees and think about the future, mainly because people are working with what they have, envisioning a future that they literally have to make themselves. Maybe it’s because she came out of the DIY punk movement, but that feels good to her. She says, “Let’s make our own future and not have Apple make it for us.”

About the Feminist Futures: Art, Design & Activism Event Series

Feminist Futures: Art, Design and Activism is an ongoing event series exploring the role of feminism in art, design, scholarship, and politics. The series brings together multigenerational artists and thinkers in contemporary art, design, art history, and related fields who have shaped, and are shaping, current discourses on gender and the fight for equality.

Feminist Futures: Art, Design & Activism Series is organized by Stamps Gallery and co-sponsored by the Center for the Education of Women+ (CEW+) Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund with support from the Institute for Research on Women & Gender (IRWG) and U-M Libraries.

Design by Ouliana Ermolova.

“What were you doing in secondary school? Most of you were probably studying, playing video games, or working up the courage to talk to your crush. In 1950, South Korean students were either volunteering or being drafted into the Korean War, to fight against a North Korean invasion. “Battle of Jangsari” highlights the role that a company of student soldiers played in enabling the Incheon beach landings, by diverting North Korean military attention to Jangsari beach. Jangsari isn’t the first Korean movie to feature student soldiers (2010 hit 71: Into the Fire owns that honor) but it does tell a story of a battle that was previously hidden under the covers of national security.” –RICHARD YU, Cinema Escapist

Abstract: What is it about twentysomethings today? Popular media portray young adults as selfish slackers who never want to grow up. Although the concept of delayed adulthood has some basis in reality, it can be argued that an extended period of exploration might be adaptive in the 21st century. In this talk, we will explore the impact of this slower transition to adulthood on the health and well-being of youth today as well as the diversity of their experiences as they seek to define themselves. Dr. Jodl will also offer some practical advice to parents on how to best support their young adults as they navigate the transition to adulthood.

Bio: Kathleen M. Jodl is the Jacquelynne S. Eccles Collegiate Lecturer of Psychology at the University of Michigan. She joined the Michigan community in 1997 after earning her doctorate in developmental psychology from the University of Virginia. Her research interests focus on family influences on adolescent development and the transition to adulthood. Over the last 10+ years, Dr. Jodl has taught thousands of undergraduates in a wide range of courses at UM including a gateway course in developmental psychology, social development, and a popular seminar on emerging adulthood. She brings a wealth of hands-on experience “living the dream” as the mother of four young adults ranging in age from 15 to 21 years.

“Working to Understand White Fragility”: In Preparation for and Reflection on Robin DiAngelo (February 25, 2020 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/70596 70596-17609124@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 25, 2020 10:00am

This two-session course is designed as an accompaniment to the March 13th campus visit by Robin DiAngelo, author of “White Fragility”. Maren Oberman, who will offer a pre- and post- session course to prepare for and reflect on DiAngelo’s talk is a clinical assistant professor at the UM School of Education whose work focuses on anti-racist educational leadership and policy.

The pre-session on February 25 will focus primarily on DiAngelo’s conceptualization of racism, with the aim being to reconsider our existing ideas and definitions. The dialogue will draw mainly from chapters 1 and 5 of “White Fragility”.

In the post-session on March 17, participants will have an opportunity to reflect on DiAngelo’s talk, to pose further questions, and to articulate their own individual commitments to anti-racism.

Participants are encouraged to read Peggy McIntosh’s seminal anti-racist article, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” prior to the first session. Both sessions will function as interactive dialogues with opportunities for participants to reflect individually, talk in small groups, and engage in large group discussion.

Maren Oberman is clinical assistant professor at the University of Michigan School of Education. Oberman’s areas of expertise include: anti-oppressive pedagogy; anti-racism in education; cross-racial communication; understanding identity; leadership growth and development, teaching and teacher policy issues; and coaching, mentoring, and instructional leadership. Her goal is to increase the quality and effectiveness of the U.S. K-12 educator force through the development of anti-racist educational practice, self-awareness and reflection, inquiry-based improvement strategies, and strategic collaboration. Maren earned her doctorate in educational leadership (EdLD) at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, including a residency at the central office in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She has served as a K-12 teacher and instructional coach in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Illinois. Maren holds a BA in African-American Studies from Yale University and a master’s in Library Science from Simmons College.

Resilience dialogues are conversations that occur among people with diverse perspectives who have agreed to work together to increase community and ecological resilience. Planning and facilitating resilience dialogues requires skills in collaboration, stakeholder engagement, and conflict management.

The Resilience Dialogues project looked across a decade of collaborative science projects to distill key lessons learned and best practices used to build resilience. This webinar shares successful collaborative techniques that worked to engage the diverse expertise of stakeholders, develop a shared language around commonly held values, and craft solutions-based science that respected local knowledge and the concerns of vulnerable communities. Results of the project have been used to develop training and resources for facilitators of collaborative processes and to guide the transfer of collaborative science projects to new audiences.

Shared housing programs are making a re-emergence amidst the rapid aging of our nation’s population. This is due in part to the desire of many older adults to “age in place;” or remain in the home as they age, rather than explore traditional senior housing options. This lecture will discuss the concept of shared housing, and look at a few programs from across the country, with an emphasis one right here in Michigan. Brittney M. Williams, LLMSW is a geriatric social worker, and the coordinator of the HomeShare Program in the Housing Bureau for Seniors at Michigan Medicine. The Study Group for those 50 and over is held on Wednesday February 26.

Gory revenge is raised to the level of visual poetry in Toshiya Fujita’s stunning Lady Snowblood. A major inspiration for Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill saga, this endlessly inventive film, set in late nineteenth-century Japan, charts the single-minded path of vengeance taken by a young woman (Meiko Kaji) whose parents were the unfortunate victims of a gang of brutal criminals. Fujita creates a wildly entertaining action film of remarkable craft, an effortless balancing act between beauty and violence.

If the international film community has yet to grow tired of the prolific auteur’s semi-annual comedies — bitter scrambles of soju and self-reflexivity that often revolve around horny male filmmakers, the women they refuse to understand, and the alcohol that forces their respective frustrations to the surface — that’s because Hong continues to find playful new ways of organizing his obsessions. He’s got a natural genius for rearranging the furniture, and it makes a virtue of the fact that he’s always working inside the same house. In that light, the relatively gentle, meditative, and straightforward “Hotel by the River” is like everything and nothing that Hong has made before; to say that it’s “just another Hong” movie is an accurate way of emphasizing what makes it special.” –DAVID EHRLICH, IndieWire

Mountain Heart offers bluegrass and more. This band as been fearlessly revolutionizing the way acoustic music can be presented and played. The band's name has been synonymous with cutting-edge excellence in bluegrass circles since the group's creation. Widely known throughout the music industry for continually redefining the boundaries of acoustic music, the band has gained legions of loyal fans as a result of both their superlative musicianship and their incendiary live performances. Mountain Heart's music always fell just barely under the bluegrass umbrella, and now, from large outdoor folk music, Americana, jam band, and bluegrass festivals, to sold-out shows opening for Southern rock icons like The Marshall Tucker Band, The Tedeschi Trucks Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Mountain Heart has been making an undeniable connection with wider audiences. Whenever they come to The Ark, they tear the house down—and at last year'sAnn Arbor Folk Festival, they just had a bigger house to tear down.

This course will introduce participants to the principles of Mindful Self-compassion (MSC). Self-compassion can be defined as learning to treat yourself the way you would treat a good friend when they suffer, fall short, or fail in some way. MSC combines the skills of mindfulness and self-compassion, providing a powerful tool for emotional resilience. Mindfulness is the first step in emotional healing. It’s being able to turn toward and acknowledge our difficult thoughts and feelings (such as inadequacy, sadness, anger, confusion) with a spirit of openness and curiosity. The Study Group for those 50 and over led by Bernadette Beach is held Mondays March 2 through April 6.

Crystal Bowersox's emotive folk-rock-country style was catapulted from the cramped coffeehouses and cavernous subway tunnels of Chicago to millions of homes across America when she placed second in Season 9 of American Idol. Along with her old soul of a voice, her carefree style and "don't mess with me" attitude set her apart from the other contestants and eventually landed the self-taught songstress performances with the like of the legendary Joe Cocker, Harry Connick, Jr., and Alanis Morrissette. Crystal started out in Toledo's folk clubs and coffeehouses, notably the Village Idiot in Maumee. Now she's moved to Nashville, added an Americana element that fits her voice beautifully, and is ready to take on the world!

Presenter: Maureen Coleman, University of Chicago
Title: Linking microbial communities and biogeochemistry across the Laurentian Great Lakes

About the presentation: The Laurentian Great Lakes hold 20% of Earth’s surface freshwater and provide essential ecosystem services. Moreover, as an interconnected waterway that spans strong environmental gradients, the Great Lakes represent a unique natural laboratory for understanding how physical, chemical, and biological forces interact to shape microbial communities and biogeochemistry. Here we explore the drivers of microbial diversity and activity across the Great Lakes, using samples collected as part of an ongoing multi-year time series. First we characterized community composition across lakes, depths, seasons, and years. We found that depth and light are strong drivers of community structure in stratified water columns. Across surface waters, we found distinct microbial signatures in each of the Great Lakes, reflecting their biogeochemical variability. To explore metabolic functions, we reconstructed hundreds of microbial genomes and created a microbial tree of life for the Laurentian Great Lakes. We mapped ecological distribution patterns for these genomes and found distinct distributions for taxa and metabolisms across lakes and depths. We focus here on two important groups for ecology and biogeochemistry, the cyanobacteria and nitrifying Bacteria and Archaea. Our work represents the first picture of microbial diversity across the entire Laurentian Great Lakes and is an essential baseline from which to monitor future ecosystem change.

About the speaker: Dr. Coleman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of the Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago. She is a microbial ecologist who studies the causes and consequences of microbial diversity in aquatic systems. Currently her lab is busy characterizing microbial communities, genomic diversity, and biogeochemistry across the Laurentian Great Lakes. She is also cultivating new microbial lineages and developing genetic tools to study their biology. She holds an undergraduate degree in biology from Dartmouth College and a Ph.D. in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT. She was a postdoc at MIT & Caltech before joining the University of Chicago in 2012.

The Future of Healthcare in the U.S. (March 4, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70356 70356-17586182@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 4, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (50+)

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) has a new program option known as a Shared Interest Group (SIG). A SIG brings people together who have a common interest that they wish to pursue indefinitely within a structure of meetings and activities designed primarily by the members of the group.

A SIG does not have a formal class syllabus. Members of a SIG determine the content and discussion of a SIG. A designated facilitator arranges meetings, takes attendance, and initiates the discussion among the SIG members on how the group will operate.

Healthcare is undergoing radical changes. Consider robotic surgery, immunotherapy for cancer, the staggering cost of new drugs, whole genome sequencing, detailed imaging of the brain, walk-in clinics in drug stores, and telemedicine.

Participants in this SIG will consider one aspect of such changes each month and discuss the consequences for their families and on a national basis. Health practitioners are encouraged to register for the SIG in order to enrich the discussion with their personal expertise and knowledge.

This Shared Interest Group will be facilitated by Bruce Friedman and will meet on the first Wednesday of each month.

Three decades into an illustrious and multifaceted career, Kevin Griffin finally decided to write and record his very first full-length solo album, "Anywhere You Go." The Better Than Ezra frontman, award-winning songwriter, and Pilgrimage Festival co-founder has added yet another persona to his resume: solo troubadour. Buoyed by minimal production, sweeping vocal harmonies, and narrative lyricism, he’s penned some of his most intimate, inimitable, and irresistible tunes to date.“My guiding rule was to do something different…” says Griffin. “…to just do the opposite of my first instinct. I wanted to bring all the music that I’m moved by into a collection of songs that didn’t pull from my usual bag of tricks. I started with no expectations, considerations, or concessions other than just wanting to make music that I loved, and I think because of that the whole process has been a joy."

In this Teach-Out you will experience some of our extraordinary planet's natural beauty and examine how climate change impacts one of the most vulnerable places on earth, the isolated Arctic island of Greenland. In June 2019, a team of students, faculty, and staff from the University of Michigan embarked on an expedition to conduct experiments and learn about how climate change is impacting this area of the planet. In this Teach-Out, you will join a group of students on their personal and professional journeys through Greenland, you will learn from leading climate scientists about how climate change is impacting Greenland and other parts of our planet, and will have the opportunity to share your stories about how you engage with the natural environment in your own backyard.

One of the best live acts to come out of Ireland in recent years is the multi-awarded winning We Banjo 3. With a seven-time all-Ireland banjo champ, a four-time banjo champ, another member who is an all-Ireland champ on both fiddle and bodhran, and with a passionate lead vocalist like a young Springsteen adopted by the Chieftains (yes, they're a quartet, but there are three banjos), the result is unforgettable. On both sides of the Atlantic the word is out about this group! WB3 performed at the “Friends of Ireland” luncheon on Capitol Hill attended by House Speaker Paul Ryan, President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny, and has headlined virtually every major U.S .Celtic fest for several years in a row. With a strong bluegrass influence (they call their music "Celtgrass"), the band is rapidly gaining favor in the worlds of bluegrass and Americana as well, as evidenced by their invites to Merlefest, ROMP Fest, Sisters Folk Fest, Old Settlers Fest, Four Corners Fest, and more! They come to Michigan with a new release, "Haven.
