Frontier Ruckus is Michigan's breakthrough Americana band! In the words of Cleveland Scene, Frontier Ruckus "delivers spirited, acoustic-based roots music driven by David W. Jones' banjo and fleshed out with saws, horns, and other left-field touches. Frontman Matthew Milia's vocals convey a dreamy, twangy quality, like someone who's wandering aimlessly through the woods at night. He recalls Michael Stipe in his vivid wordplay and oblique imagery." What's unique about this band is that they use country instrumentation to depict not a rustic utopia but life along the interstate as most of us live it, and as a rhymer Milia is in Cole Porter territory (really!). They've got an deep lyrical streak, and each of their albums so far has been brilliantly original in concept. Rolling Stone thinks Frontier Ruckus has "the perfect recipe for Gothic Americana."

We are working to build support for the Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (energyinnovationact.org). This comprehensive, bipartisan legislation is projected to reduce our carbon emissions by at least 40% in 12 years. Our meetings consist of dialing in to a national conference call (featuring different guest speakers each month), followed by local discussion of actions. Newcomers are welcome to come at 12:30 for a brief overview.

On a musical journey that began in 1982, Annie and Rod Capps have earned sincere praise for their songwriting and musicianship, with two albums topping the Folk DJ charts, multiple Detroit Music Award nominations, and as two-time Kerrville New Folk Finalists (2010 & 2012). Defining their "style" is not easy. It never ceases to be a moving target as they work continually to evolve with surprising new influences and inspirations, always striving for true musical and songwriting maturity. Nonetheless, for well over 30 years they've been cultivating a symbiotic sound that reflects their deep and intuitive understanding of each other, delivering songs about broken things and poignant little ponderings with a rootsy vibe, a touch of twang and a soulful groove.

(George Matthew, Jr.'s appearance has been postponed indefinitely due to travel concerns.)

A “virtuoso” (HKSNA) in command of a range of expression from “eerie sonance” (Diapason) to “jumpy athleticism” (Chicago Classical Review), Dr. Tiffany Ng is Assistant Professor of Carillon at the University of Michigan. Her concert career spans festivals in seventeen countries in Europe, Asia, Australia, and North America, where she has premiered over 60 acoustic and electroacoustic works, championed women composers, and pioneered models for interactive “crowdsourced” and environmental-data-driven carillon performances. She holds a doctorate in musicology and new media from the University of California, Berkeley, a master’s degree in organ from the Eastman School of Music, an artist diploma with great distinction from the Royal Carillon School in Belgium, and a bachelor’s degree from Yale.

Emphasis will be placed on using our identities to help us understand the identities and experiences of others.

In this session, participants will:
Identify the benefits of inclusive environments
Review key terminology related to diversity, equity, and inclusion
Reflect on the origin of identities, their intersectionality, and their meanings
Use our own identities as a window to understanding the identities of others to build more authentic, empathic relationships

Audience:
This session is open to all LSA Staff.

A Grammy/Juno winner and a singer-songwriter who is not tied to tradition, Alex Cuba sings in English and Spanish, and has a vast musical vision. His sugarcane-sweet melodies, pop-soul hooks, and powerful guitar riffs relinquish a conventional stereotype that exemplifies much of the Latin music landscape. Born Alexis Puentes in Artemisa, Cuba, Alex was immersed in music at a very young age, joining his father’s group of 24 guitarists. Alex then went on to study electric and upright bass and touring and recording nationally and internationally. Relocating to Canada in 1999, Alex went on to record his solo debut album, "Humo de Tobaco" (produced by Martin Terefe), which earned him a Juno award for World Music Album of the Year. He comes to the Family Room with a new album, "Sublime." Alex is very much like nothing you've heard before, and we think you'll really like him.

In this ISR Insights talk, Jessica Finlay (Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Social Environment and Health, ISR) and Lindsay Kobayashi (Assistant Professor, Center for Social Epidemiology and Population Health, School of Public Health) will discuss insights from the COVID-19 Coping Study of nearly 7,000 adults aged 55+ from across the country. The talk will share participants’ perspectives and diverse experiences during the first upswing of the pandemic, including major sources of stress and ways of coping.

If there is a topic you would like to see featured or have an idea for a future presentation, please email abeattie@umich.edu.

Policy Talks @ the Ford School

The current public health crisis has further exposed deep inequities in the United States, leaving millions unemployed and straining social services. While many Americans have seen an abrupt drop in income, those already living in poverty are facing additional hardships. Luke Shaefer, Ford School associate dean and director of Poverty Solutions, Alford A. Young Jr, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Department of Sociology and a professor of Afroamerican and African Studies, and Michael S. Barr, dean of the Ford School, will discuss some of the ways that policymakers and communities are attempting to combat poverty during this crisis. How can existing federal, state, and local programs expand to meet rapidly increasing needs? What policy approaches can effectively help those most in need? How can we learn from these extraordinary circumstances in order to more effectively alleviate poverty moving forward?

The Blalock Lecture Series and the Getting To Know ISR series are pleased to co-present Dr. Robert Taylor and David Thomas in a talk on ISR's Program for Research on Black Americans and the associated data archived at ICPSR.

Robert Joseph Taylor, MSW, Ph.D., is the Sheila Feld Collegiate Professor and the Harold Johnson Endowed Professor of Social Work at the University of Michigan. He is the Director of the Program for Research on Black Americans at the Institute for Social Research. He is currently on the editorial board of Society and Mental Health and Race and Social Problems and has served on the editorial boards of Journals of Gerontology: Social Sciences, the Journal of Marriage and Family, and Family Relations. Professor Taylor has published 3 books and over 175 journal articles in two major areas—African American family social support networks and African American religious participation. He has been Principal Investigator of several grants from the National Institute on Aging which examine the role of religion in the lives of Black and White elderly adults. He has been Co-Principal Investigator with James Jackson on several grants from the National Institute of Mental Health on the correlates of mental health and mental illness among Black Americans including the only major national probability surveys of Black Americans (The National Survey of Black Americans and the National Survey of American Life). He has been selected as one of the 250 Highly Cited researchers in the General Social Science Category by ISIHighlyCited.com (Creators of the Citation Index and Current Contents). The selection of a researcher is based on the total number of citations received by that individual as recorded in the ISI database between 1981-1999.

David Thomas supervises staff in both the General Archive and Resource Center for Minority Data (RCMD). He began his ICPSR career by processing ABC News/Washington Post and CBS News/New York Times polls. Now, his team is responsible for processing public opinion polls for ICPSR. In addition to polling data, his team processes the National Election Pool data, the American National Election Survey data, American Community Survey, and the Latino National Survey for ICPSR.

PENNY STAMPS SPEAKER SERIES + DPTV PRESENT STREET ARTIST AND ACTIVIST JOE CASLIN (July 17, 2020 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75218 75218-19338189@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, July 17, 2020 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

On Friday, July 17 at 8:00 pm ET, tune in at dptv.org or join us on the Penny Stamps Series Facebook page to view a presentation by Joe Caslin.

Designboom Magazine has Described the work of Joe Caslin as “towering works of art [that] appear like massive sketch books across the architecture of Ireland’s cities.” Caslin is the recipient of the 2013 Association of Illustrators award for New Talent in Public Realm Illustration. He creates highly accessible work that engages directly with the social issues of modern Ireland. Caslin confronts the subjects of suicide, drug addiction, economic marginalization, marriage equality, stigma in mental health, the Irish asylum system, institutional power, and most recently, sexual consent. The monochrome drawings Caslin creates live with us and against many of us for some time before washing away. They hold a mirror up to the kind of society that we are, while asking us individually what kind of society we want to be a part of. In 2018, Caslin worked with the National Gallery of Ireland to create Finding Power, a huge mural of the writer and activist Stephen Moloney installed in the gallery’s courtyard. His current project, Our Nation’s Sons, aims to persuade entire communities to address the very real problem of young male’s apathy and their mental well-being.

This veteran California songwriter was an Ark favorite as one-half of the duo Lowen & Navarro. But he was creatively silent for eight years after Lowen's death in 2012. First cousin of Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Dan recently reemerged with Shed My Skin, which No Depression called "a hauntingly beautiful album that evokes poignant regret, elusive identity, ambivalent passion, and palpable longing." This free show will be a way to renew an old acquaintance for many Ark listeners—and to make a new one for many others.

We first heard this songwriter as one half of the duo Sound an Echo, and now we welcome her to the Family Room for a solo show. Rachael Kilgour is a Minnesotan songwriter and performing artist whose sincere, lyric-driven work has been called both brave and humane. The 2015 grand prize winner of the esteemed international NewSong Music Performance & Songwriting Competition and winner of the 2017 Kerrville New Folk Contest, Rachael has been featured at NYC’s Lincoln Center, at The Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. and by the ASCAP Music Cafe at the Sundance Film Festival. Married in her early twenties, Rachael chronicled her life as a young parent in a same-sex partnership and addressed sociopolitical issues from government corruption to income inequality and religious hypocrisy. In 2014, divorce brought an unwanted end to her role as a member of the family she had helped to grow. In the aftermath, Kilgour found solace in songwriting. Rachael was awarded a 2020 Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant to focus on a songwriting project about the life and recent death of her father.

Free event; registration required to participate: https://bit.ly/2VAzu3I

Repression has skyrocketed in the Central American country of Honduras since the 2009 military coup that overthrew the reformist government of “Mel” Zelaya. In October 2019, a New York jury convicted the President’s brother, Tony Hernández, of drug trafficking; and prosecutors named the President, Juan Orlando Hernández, as a co-conspirator. Today 62% of Hondurans live in poverty, and the country has one of the world’s highest homicide rates. Join us for a discussion with two specialists on Honduras about the roots of Honduran migration, government complicity in drug trafficking, and the role of U.S. policy in contributing to social injustice and repression.

Amelia Frank-Vitale is a doctoral candidate in cultural anthropology at the University of Michigan. She has researched transit migration from Central America. Her dissertation research (supported by Fulbright and the Social Science Research Council, among others) is on Central American migration and violence, based on two years of ethnographic work in and around San Pedro Sula, Honduras. She is a collaborator with Dr. Jason De León's Undocumented Migration Project, currently housed at UCLA.

Mary Anne Perrone is a longtime activist who has worked with School of the Americas Watch to oppose militarization in the Americas, and has participated in numerous delegations to Honduras and El Salvador. She is active in Latin America solidarity and immigrant rights work with the Interfaith Council for Peace & Justice (ICPJ), Washtenaw Interfaith Coalition for Immigrant Rights (WICIR), and Washtenaw Congregational Sanctuary (WCS).

Psychological stress can damper your overall health, affecting your ability to remain resilient in the face of challenges. Evidence-based meditation has been shown to also reduce implicit age and race bias, reduce the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and pain, improve cognitive functioning, and assist in ending ruminating thought patterns.

Raised in a musical family in rural Maine, these brothers have honed a harmony-rich blend of contemporary folk and acoustic pop. On stage, Sean and Jamie create a surprisingly full sound with dynamic vocals, electric and acoustic guitars, octave bass, loops, and percussion. The brothers live in Maine but are often on the road performing, producing music videos, and dancing. Oshima Brothers' music fuses songwriting with production, engineering, multi-instrumentalism, and filmmaking. Their two albums and many videos were made mostly in their home studio in Maine. Oshima Brothers made their local debut at The Ark's Art Fair Stage in 2019.

Physics Graduate Student Symposium | Eliminating Artifacts in Astronomical Images Using Deep Learning (July 23, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/75256 75256-19379437@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, July 23, 2020 12:00pm

Polarization measurements done using Imaging Polarimeters such as the Robotic Polarimeter are very sensitive to the presence of artifacts in images. Artifacts can range from internal reflections in a telescope to satellite trails that could contaminate an area of interest in the image. With the advent of wide-field polarimetry surveys, it is imperative to develop methods that automatically flag artifacts in images. In this paper, we implement a Convolutional Neural Network to identify the most dominant artifacts in the images. We find that our model can successfully classify sources with 98% true positive and 97% true negative rates. Such models, combined with transfer learning, will give us a running start in artifact elimination for near-future surveys like the Wide Area Linear Optical Polarimeter (WALOP). This work was done at the Astronomy department of the California Institute of Technology in the US with Dr. Ashish Mahabal, Prof. Anthony Readhead, Prof. Kieran Cleary, Prof. A. N. Ramaprakash and Dr. Gina Panapoulou. This was a collaborative work with the PASIPHAE group which stands for Polar-Areas Stellar-Imaging in Polarization High-Accuracy Experiment. Pasiphae is an international collaboration between the University of Crete, Caltech, the South African Astronomical Observatory, the Inter-University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics, and the University of Oslo. This experiment aims to map, with unprecedented accuracy, the polarization of millions of stars at areas of the sky away from the Galactic plane, in both the Northern and the Southern hemispheres.

Therapeutic neuromodulation has an established history for clinical indications, such as deep brain stimulation for movement disorders and spinal cord stimulation for pain, despite an incomplete understanding of its mechanism of action. Novel neuroprosthetics have the potential to enable wholly new therapies, including sensory restoration and treatment of affective disorders. In order to fully realize the potential of these interventions, precise parameterization of stimulation, informed by better understanding of underlying processes, is required. This dissertation explores the temporal and spatial determinants of outcomes for stimulation within the context of clinical and experimental sensorimotor neuromodulation.

The first study of the dissertation defines a new functional target for subthalamic deep brain stimulation for Parkinson disease treatment. While optimal sites of stimulation are often analyzed as discrete points in space, therapeutic tissue activation is known to activate entire volumes of surrounding tissue. To identify markers of these volumes, we used machine learning tools to identify associations between features of wideband neural recordings and regions of clinically validated stimulation regions derived from patient-specific tissue activation models. The study identified several electrophysiological markers of therapeutic activation regions, providing a tool for efficient optimization of stimulation programming.

Despite the importance of spatially precise stimulation, conventional stereotactic methods are limited by intrinsic sources of error. The second study assessed a novel form of lead localization utilizing local impedance at deep brain sites. We demonstrated that in vivo impedance measurements generally match patterns observed in electrostatic simulations and showed that these values can be efficiently estimated using diffusion tensor data. Impedances measured using a clinical macroelectrode provided spatial information at the resolution of millimeters and could be used to roughly localize deep brain trajectories, presenting a prototype method to complement existing targeting technologies.

The final study evaluated a novel form of deep brain stimulation for modulation of pain. Previous rodent studies show that stimulation of zona incerta can provide analgesic effect, and clinical evidence suggests that stimulation of a nearby nucleus, nominally used to treat motor manifestations of Parkinson disease, often also results in improvement of pain symptoms. We directly tested the analgesic effect of zona incerta stimulation in humans and demonstrated that stimulation at the physiological spiking frequency of zona incerta selectively reduces perceived heat pain.

This week the nation is mourning the loss of Congressman John Lewis, who passed away last Friday after a battle with cancer. John Lewis was a civil rights leader and an American politician, serving Georgia’s 5th district since 1987. A member of the Democratic party leadership, Lewis served as Senior Chief Deputy Whip since 2003. Born the son of Alabama sharecroppers, Lewis’s childhood was filled with deeply inspirational moments, including the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the words of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. heard on radio broadcasts. As a college student, Lewis’s inspiration fueled his commitment to end legalized racial segregation; he was chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and was one of the “Big Six” leaders of groups who organized the 1963 March on Washington. His dedication to the highest ethical standards and moral principles won Lewis the admiration of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle in the United States Congress. Lewis dedicated his life to protecting human rights, securing civil liberties, and building what he called “The Beloved Community” in America. Lewis co-wrote his story with his then-Congressional Aid, later Digital Director and Policy Advisor, Andrew Aydin, in the form of the graphic novel trilogy, MARCH (2013). The collaborative work was illustrated by New York Times best-selling graphic novelist Nate Powell. In 2017, Lewis, Aydin, and Powell visited the University of Michigan campus to discuss MARCH in this special Stamps Speaker Series presentation at Hill Auditorium.

Since being proclaimed Songwriter of the Year by iTunes, Royal has continued to evolve and hone his musical craft—maintaining an unmistakable identity while uncovering and reinventing his sound. He has two albums that have debuted in the Top 30, multiple JUNO nominations, song placements on "Grey's Anatomy," and "Private Practice." Royal's new album, "Ever After the Farewell," is, Royal says, "not only deeply inspired by both loss and love, but is an ode to the classic styles of both Tin Pan Alley and Laurel Canyon.” Royal is donating proceeds from this performance to Black Lives Matter of Canada

Engineering large viable tissues requires techniques for encouraging rapid capillary bed formation to prevent necrosis. A convenient means of creating this micro-vascular network is through spontaneous neovascularization, which occurs when endothelial cells (ECs) and supportive stromal cells are co-encapsulated within a variety of hydrogel-based extracellular matrices (ECM) and self-assemble into an interconnected network of endothelial tubules. Although this is a robust phenomenon, the environmental and cell-specific determinants that affect the rate and quality of micro-vascular network formation still require additional characterization to improve clinical translatability. This thesis investigates how the proteolytic susceptibility of engineered matrices effects neovascular self-assembly in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels and provides characterization of changes to matrix mechanics that accompany neovascular morphogenesis in fibrin and PEG hydrogels.

Proteolytic ECM remodeling is essential for the process of capillary morphogenesis. Pharmacological inhibitor studies suggested a role for both matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)- and plasmin-mediated mechanisms of ECM remodeling in an EC-fibroblast co-culture model of vasculogenesis in fibrin. To further investigate the potential contribution of plasmin mediated matrix degradation in facilitating capillary morphogenesis we employed PEG hydrogels engineered with proteolytic specificity to either MMPs, plasmin, or both. Although fibroblasts spread in plasmin-selective hydrogels, we only observed robust capillary morphogenesis in MMP-sensitive matrices, with no added benefit in dual susceptible hydrogels. Enhanced capillary morphogenesis was observed, however, in PEG hydrogels engineered with increased susceptibility to MMPs without altering proteolytic selectivity or hydrogel mechanical properties. These findings highlight the critical importance of MMP-mediated ECM degradation during vasculogenesis and justify the preferential selection of MMP-degradable peptide crosslinkers in the design of synthetic hydrogels used to promote vascularization.

Matrix stiffness is a well-established cue in cellular morphogenesis, however, the converse effect of cellular remodeling on environmental mechanics is comparatively under characterized. In fibrin hydrogels, we applied traditional bulk rheology and laser tweezers-based active microrheology to demonstrate that both ECs and fibroblasts progressively stiffen the ECM across length scales, with the changes in bulk properties dominated by fibroblasts. Despite a lack of fibrillar architecture, a similar stiffening effect was observed in MMP-degradable PEG hydrogels. This stiffening tightly correlated with degree of vessel formation and critically depended on active cellular contractility. To a lesser degree, deposition of ECM proteins also appeared to contribute to progressive hydrogel stiffening. Blocking cell-mediated hydrogel degradation abolished stiffening, demonstrating that matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-mediated remodeling is required for stiffening to occur. EC co-culture with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in PEG resulted in reduced vessel formation compared to fibroblast co-cultures and no change in hydrogel mechanics over time. The correlation between matrix stiffening and enhanced vessel formation, and dependence on cellular contractility, suggests differences in vessel formation between fibroblasts and MSCs may be partially mediated by differences in cellular contractility. Collectively, these findings provide a deeper understanding of mechanobiological effects during capillary morphogenesis and highlight the dynamic reciprocity between cells and their mechanical environment.

The killing of George Floyd, in the wake of the horrific and obscene history of the killings of unarmed black people by the police, has focused attention like never before on the systemic anti-black racism of the criminal-legal system in the United States. To be sure, the massive expansion and militarization of policing and incarceration are in some ways of comparatively recent origin. Yet they also have a much deeper origin in, and are inextricably connected to, a longer history of the judicial and extra-judicial violence against black people in the continent. The racist inequities of the criminal-legal system, indeed, are not a bug, but a feature.

Our panel of experts, scholars of the United States at the University of Michigan, will help us explore, beyond the headlines, the reach of the long arm of the carceral state in society as well as the challenges and opportunities that have been thrown up by the contemporary protests against the systemic violence of the state. The stakes for understanding the working of the carceral state are documented by the Documenting Criminalization and Confinement project of the University of Michigan’s Carceral State Project. However, the momentous protests against anti-Black racism as well as the broad public support they have received both within the United States and across the world—the clamor heard round the world—have also created a novel opportunity for implementing and imagining futures beyond a blatantly rigged carceral framework.

• Melissa Burch, Anthropology, University of Michigan

Dr. Anton Reznicek (Curator of Vascular Plants at the U-M LSA Herbarium) will deliver the annual UMBS Bennett Endowed Lecture in Plant & Fungal Ecology.

It has become routine to predict the future of our biota by starting with present day distributions and broad-brush niches derived from these occurrences. Looking to the past and basing predictions on what has actually happened would seem to be very helpful in understanding the nature of the changes and refining approaches to studying change, but for plants we are typically hampered by lack of past floristic data. This is usually because we have little or no detailed information for floras before large scale European alteration of the landscape. Michigan, however, is unique in that immediately after becoming a State, in 1837, the State legislature, advised by forward thinking scientists, established the First Geological Survey of Michigan. The core idea was to produce detailed information on Michigan’s natural resources to provide a scientific foundation for the development of the State. Because at this time essentially all medicine was plant based, a detailed inventory of the Flora, supported by herbarium specimens, was a major thrust of the First Survey. Collating and studying this material laid the groundwork for understanding of our past flora in unusual depth. Three segments of this knowledge will be the primary focus. First, a review of the First Survey’s collecting activities (and those of a few other early collectors) and what we thus know about Michigan’s Flora in 1840. Second, a review of changes that have occurred that bring us, 180 years later, to the composition of our present day flora. In terms of species loss, this has been driven mostly by direct physical alteration of habitats, either complete elimination or drastic alteration of the hydrology and microhabitat conditions, especially in southern Michigan. Finally, knowing the operation of the past drivers of change, what can we infer about the changes we can expect in the
future?

Being present in the moment is a skill that can be learned when practiced on a regular basis and is especially important during these trying times.

Free and open to all levels of practice.

Underserved communities do not have the same level of access to transportation, including those with visual impairments. This can lead to a loss in opportunities for healthcare, education, and employment. This discussion is led by Assistant Professor, Robin Brewer, and Karl E. Weick Collegiate Professor of Information, Nicole Ellison. Professors Brewer and Ellison will be discussing their recently completed project titled, "Supporting People with Vision Impairments in Autonomous Vehicles". They will focus on the perceived barriers and design solutions of autonomous vehicles from the perspective of blind and low vision people. They will also examine the broader transportation ecosystem and how ridesharing services, a proxy to understanding AV use, are experienced by people with vision impairments. This free webinar will include a Q&A session.

Her words have held solace for weary hearts, offered a light in the darkness and held a lot of space for the pain and joy of being alive in these times. Mucosal surfaces in the lung interface with the outside environment for breathing purposes, but also provide the first line of defense against invading pathogens. The intricate balance of effective immune protection at the pulmonary epithelium without problematic inflammation is not well understood, but is an important consideration in complex lung diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although IPF is a fibrotic interstitial lung disease of unknown origin and COPD is an obstructive lung disease, they do share some similarities. Both are heterogeneous and progressive in nature, have no cure and few treatment options, advance through unknown mechanisms, and involve an aberrant immune response. As research has focused into the role the immune system plays in IPF and COPD, it has become clear that disease progression is caused by a complex dysregulation of immune factors and cells across the tissue compartments of the lungs and blood.

Data-driven modeling approaches offer the opportunity to infer protein interaction networks, which are able to identify diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers and also serve as the basis for new insight into systems-level mechanisms that define a disease state. Additionally, these approaches are able to integrate data from across multiple tissue compartments, allowing for a more holistic picture of a disease to be formed. Here, we have applied data-driven modeling approaches including partial least squares discriminant analysis, principal component analysis, decision tree analysis, and hierarchical clustering to high-throughput cell and cytokine measurements from human blood and lung samples to gain systems-level insight into IPF and COPD.

Overall we found that these approaches were useful for identifying signatures of proteins that differentiated disease state and progression better than current classifiers. We also found that integrating protein and cell measurements across tissue compartments generally improved classification and was useful for generating new mechanistic insight into progression and exacerbation events. In evaluating IPF progression, we showed that the blood proteome of progressors, but not of non-progressors, changes over time, and that our data-driven modeling techniques were able to capture these changes. Curiously, our models showed that complement system components may be associated with both COPD and IPF disease progression. Lastly, though our analysis suggested that circulating blood cytokines were not useful for differentiating disease state or progression, preliminary work suggested that cell-cell communication networks arising from stimulated peripheral blood proteins may be more useful for classification and gaining mechanistic insight from minimally invasive blood samples. Overall, we believe that this approach will be useful for studying the mucosal immune response present in other diseases that are also progressive or heterogeneous in nature.

Dark matter is a mysterious substance that pervades the universe and affects its evolution via gravity. The particulate nature of dark matter is unknown, although several theoretical candidates have been proposed. One such candidate is the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle (WIMP), which several experiments over the last decade have sought to discover. Among the forthcoming generation of these experiments is LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ), an underground tonne-scale detector employing liquid xenon to search for faint dark matter interactions. This talk will go over the operating principle of the detector, its sensitivity to physics beyond WIMPs, hardware challenges to achieve these science goals, and the simulation and analysis tasks in preparation for LZ's first data.

This engaging program will provide a platform for talented storytellers to share their powerful, true life experiences. These compelling stories will bring laughter, inspiration, and maybe even a few tears.

Big Hearts for Seniors was formed to support critical services for our aging community members. This collaborative is comprised of five community non-profit programs serving older adults: Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, Housing Bureau for Seniors, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Silver Club Memory Programs, and the Turner Senior Wellness Program. These programs help seniors access home-delivered meals, sustainable housing options, support to remain independent, learning in retirement opportunities, relief from social isolation, and programs for those with dementia.

Since 2006, Big Hearts for Seniors has raised sponsor support funds and generous community donations through various events including the Big House/Big Heart races, silent auctions, and documentary film screenings. All funds raised are used to provide needed services to older adults.
