The platform provides campus-wide access to research tools such as DataDirect and services such as consultation with scientific facilitators.

Attend a roadshow to learn how to access the platform and what you can do with it:

• Perform cohort discovery on a database of 4M+ patients
• Query a de-identified, structured dataset of ~60K patients
• Submit queries through the self-serve tool DataDirect
• Access output via a secure, HIPAA-compliant environment
• Request access to linked genetic data (with IRB approval)

“‘In the Future, Robots will Speak Chickasaw’: Indigenous Language Futurism and the Temporalities of Language Reclamation” (October 23, 2019 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/66069 66069-16686689@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, October 23, 2019 4:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

The revitalization or reclamation of Indigenous and endangered languages is often driven or shaped by what Debenport (2015) calls ‘hopeful nostalgia,’ where if “read through the lens of nostalgia, language revitalization can be seen as both a symptom and a cure, a way to diagnose the amount of cultural loss and a way to reinstate what has gone missing, what has been taken, and what is seen to be vital to the health of the community." By definition then, language reclamation looks to the past in order to understand the present and to imagine radical linguistic futures. While the past is often privileged in discussions of language revitalization as an anchor of authenticity and cultural continuity, present day language use in revitalization contexts also utilizes comics, gaming, memes, and other creative and technological domains that position Native American languages as always simultaneously ‘once and future,’ quondam and futurus. In this talk, I consider the role of these Indigenous linguistic and cultural temporalities in understanding Indigenous language activism with particular interest in linguistic futurisms, or the imagining of Indigenous languages in Indigenous perspectives of the future.

Jenny L. Davis is a citizen of the Chickasaw Nation and an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where she is the director of the Native American and Indigenous Languages (NAIL) Lab and an affiliate faculty of American Indian Studies and Gender & Women’s Studies. She is the 2019-2021 Chancellor's Fellow of Indigenous Research & Ethics, and serves as the UIUC campus NAGPRA officer.

As students of color at the University of Michigan, some experiences can cause or worsen stress, anxiety, and isolation. Everyday experiences of racism, discrimination, or just subtly being made to feel “different” or like we don’t belong can cause our academics and social lives to suffer. This negatively impacts our mental wellbeing. Many students of color face the challenge of finding supportive and trusting resources that relate to their mental health experiences. Finding the solution to this lack of support has been a conversation that's been halted on campus for too long. At Wellness in Color, we aim to tackle this challenge by facilitating dialogues to initiate the mental health conversation in our community.

We invite you to join us to talk about how students of color have persevered despite difficult moments at Michigan and how faculty and staff can play a role in creating a learning environment where students of color can thrive.

This student pre-conference is designed and facilitated by U-M students of color as part of the national Young, Gifted, @Risk, and Resilient Conference which aims to promote the mental health and well being among students of color.

Sponsors:
The Steve Fund, National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID), Program on Intergroup Relations (IGR), Trotter Multicultural Center (TMC), and the Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs (MESA) office.

Mark your calendars for the 2019 Young, Gifted, @Risk, & Resilient (YGARR) national conference at the University of Michigan! This day-long conference will bring together leading researchers, practitioners, administrators, faculty, and students to focus on campus climate and mental health among young adult/college students of color.

The current dialogue on mental health among college students has become a nationwide priority. Students of color in particular are tasked with navigating unique circumstances that can negatively influence their mental health, including racial/ethnic discrimination disparities in service utilization that can be exacerbated by discrimination experiences, treatment related to immigration status, and racialized sexual and gender marginalization. Yet, there is a relative dearth of scholarship specifically focused on the roles and impacts of campus climates characterized by these types of experiences on the mental health and well-being of college students of color. Such gaps in knowledge inhibit our ability to fully provide high quality, responsive, and equitable and inclusive supports and services.

This national conference is a collaboration between The Steve Fund, the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) at the University of Michigan. The conference curriculum is informed by the longstanding work of The Steve Fund and the latest research and insights from scholars and practitioners across the country. Conference participants will explore national and campus socio-political contexts and take away best practices in order to foster spaces and places that promote emotional well-being for students of color. We hope you will join us as we work towards advancing research and informing practice to better support students of color across the country.

We welcome you to visit the conference website to learn more. If you have any questions, please email Laura Sánchez-Parkinson at lasanche@umich.edu.

Research on the concept of dual-centric provides helpful guidance on strategies for balance. Studies show that people with a dual focus on work and personal life are less stressed and more successful than those whose primary focus is on just work, or just personal life. In this interactive workshop we will review the strategies these dual focused people follow to achieve balance, and engage in related exercises.
This workshop is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Space is limited. For faculty and staff, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/Boo87.
We want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time (one week preferred) to arrange for your requested accommodation(s) or an effective alternative.

Poverty and charity in medieval lslamic societies, territories and frontiers in the early and middle Islamic period, the theory and practice of jihad, and the economic history of Arabia at the rise of Islam - these were some of the main themes in the work of Michael Bonner (1952-2019), Professor of Medieval Islamic History, who passed away earlier this year. Michael Bonner was a truly encyclopedic scholar and intellectual, admired for his linguistic breadth and philological depth, and his attention to detail and awareness of the big picture. His enthusiasm, curiosity, and creativity affected many of his students. At this symposium former students, teachers, collaborators will gather to celebrate his work and his memory, and present new research carrying on his legacy.

Rebecca Lynn is a Two Spirit artist from the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, in Harbor Springs, MI. She studied sociology at the University of Michigan and is currently the owner and beader of QueerKwe Designs. Becca’s work aims to create representation for LGBTQ+ & Two Spirit indigenous folks by combining modern pride flags into her traditional beadwork. You can check out her work and mission on Instagram, @queerkwe, and Facebook, QueerKwe Designs.

This lecture will explore the complexities of gender and sexuality within Native American communities and the ways these views continue to be impacted by colonization efforts. Traditionally fluid and accepting nations were forced to conform to rigid, Western binaries through assimilation tactics, such as compulsory Christianity and Native American Boarding Schools. Today, LGBTQ2S+ and gender non conforming Indigenous people are reclaiming their space and traditionally sacred roles within their communities. Join us in learning about the emergence of Two Spirit identity, a contemporary term created to reject colonial binaries and embrace traditionally fluid ideas of gender and sexuality within our Native American communities.

The USS Liberty incident was an attack on a United States Navy technical research ship, USS Liberty, by Israeli Air Force jet fighter aircraft and Israeli Navy motor torpedo boats, on 8 June 1967, during the Six-Day War. The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crew members (naval officers, seamen, two marines, and one civilian), wounded 171 crew members, and severely damaged the ship. Lioness presents the untold story of the first group of women soldiers in US history to be sent into direct ground combat, in violation of official policy. Told through intimate accounts, journal excerpts, archive footage, as well as interviews with military commanders, the film follows five women who served together for a year in Iraq. With captivating detail, this probing documentary reveals the unexpected course of events that began with using US women soldiers to defuse tensions with local civilians, but resulted in the women's fighting in some of the bloodiest counter-insurgency battles of the war. Together the women's candid narratives and scenes from their lives back home form a portrait of the emotional and psychological effects of war from a female point of view. Lioness is the first film to bridge the gap between perception and reality of the role women in the military are playing in Iraq, capturing an historical turning point for American society.

Documentary followed by discussion by Cassie Michael: U-M student, Marine veteran and participant the Lioness program.

The annual Michigan Pre-College and Youth Outreach Conference (PCC) brings together leaders in education, workforce development, and government from around the state to cast a spotlight on the important role postsecondary institutions and community partners play in promoting college access.

The theme this year is Inclusion and Innovation in College Access: Cultivating Michigan Youth. We are inviting scholars, researchers and practitioners to examine the challenges to postsecondary attainment and success, explore opportunities to address these issues, and share the impact of promising approaches.

The Keynote speaker this year will be Dr. Kedra Ishop, Vice Provost for Enrollment Management at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. She is a nationally recognized expert, speaker, and advisor on issues in higher education related to diversity, affordability, assessment, admissions, and enrollment.

This annual one day conference rotates among colleges and universities across the state. Representatives from many colleges and universities, as well as other community partners, contribute to its planning.

Postsecondary education remains the best way for youth to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in our evolving global landscape. While 70% of jobs in Michigan now require training beyond high school, the state lags behind the nation’s average for college attainment and fewer than a quarter of the state’s high school graduates are college-ready.

Join us on Tuesday, November 19, at 6 p.m., for an exciting Dissonance event: Protecting Patient Privacy in Big Data. This panel discussion will take place in the Vandenberg Room, on the second floor of the Michigan League on the UM-Ann Arbor campus. There is no charge for this event and no need to register.

Electronic health records, connected medical devices, health tracking applications, and more have led to a tidal wave of medical data. How this data is being used to transform patient care, improve care quality and decrease healthcare costs, however, is not always evident. Michigan Medicine physicians and legal scholars will explore how medical care will change as digital health platforms evolve, the legal ramifications we might have to navigate, and the privacy and ethical issues that are unfolding today.

Fifty years ago Political Theory was the neglected step-child in departments of Political Science. Over the last fifty years the field has expanded widely. This symposium will explore first how ancient Greek political theory has come to speak to the modern world, and then the many ways that the study of political theory has changed (or not) in fifty years. We will ask how it has come to influence the ways in which we think about democracy, about the discipline of political science, about the challenges of integrating theory and practice.

Reception to follow in the Michigan League's Michigan Room (2nd Floor).

Full conference details available here: https://ii.umich.edu/lrccs/news-events/events/conferences/global-chinese-food---december-6--2019.html

Millions outside of China enjoy Chinese food each day. Even though they might all go out for a “Chinese” meal, there is little uniformity to what arrives on their plates, in their bowls, or at the tips of their chopsticks or forks. In Germany, “Chinese” food could mean ribs in hoisin sauce, served with pickled cucumbers; in India, deep-fried vegan cauliflower; and in South Korea, sweet brown sauce on a plate of beef noodles. What do these diverse examples tell about the nature of Chinese food? How does a global perspective deepen our understanding of culinary authenticity and heritage? These questions will be the focus of Global Chinese Food. The conference will bring scholars of Asian American, African, Chinese Studies, Latin American, and Japanese into a wide-ranging and exciting conversation. The conference is free and open to the public.

Organized by Professor Miranda Brown (@Dong_Muda), Asian Languages and Cultures.

This conference is sponsored by Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies with additional support provided by the Departments of History, American Culture, Asian Languages and Culture; the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; the Institute for Humanities; the Confucius Institute; Office of Research; and the School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Cheryl Brown Henderson talks about her personal experience with segregated schools and the story of how Brown v. Board of Education came to be.

The case was elevated to the U.S. Supreme Court, which in May of 1954 ruled unanimously that racial segregation in public schools violated the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution, which prohibits states from denying equal protection of the laws to any person within their jurisdictions. The decision declared that separate educational facilities for white and African American students were inherently unequal.

Brown Henderson is the daughter of the late Reverend Oliver L. Brown who in 1950, along with 12 other parents in Topeka, Kansas, and led by attorneys for the NAACP, filed suit on behalf of their children against the local Board of Education. Their case joined with cases from other states on appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, and became known as the landmark decision, Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas.

Organized By: International Youth and Students for Social Equality

2019 was a year of global mass protest in Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, France, Algeria, Lebanon, Sudan, Haiti and many other countries. Millions of people filled the streets against social inequality.

This global wave of social struggle swept through the United States, where 50,000 autoworkers engaged in the largest auto strike in more than forty years.

The word “socialism” is gaining popularity, especially among young people and workers. Billions are opposed to unending war, unprecedented levels of social inequality, the rise of fascism and authoritarianism, environmental degradation and all the consequences of capitalism.

But does socialism mean working within the same capitalist political parties who are responsible for inequality and war, as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claim? No. Genuine socialism means mobilizing the strength of billions of workers, dismantling the militaries, seizing control of the corporations and reorganizing the world economy to meet social need, not private profit.

This meeting will review the state of world politics and outline a program and perspective for the working class to fight back.

18th Annual Dimitris and Irmgard Pallas Modern Greek Lecture

Summary:
Since 2016, I have been carrying out an archaeological ethnography project on contemporary migration, focusing on the border island of Lesvos. In this talk, I will report on some of the findings of this project, showing how a sustained and detailed attention to the materiality and temporality of the phenomenon, to the sensorial, affective, and temporal properties of things, can offer insights that elude other kinds of research. Objects, spaces, buildings and landscapes are essential components in the formation of border assemblages, together with border crossers, volunteers, as well as border guards and security apparatuses. I will explore how the attention to such assemblages can not only help us understand what some scholars have described as the new Global Apartheid, but more positively, allow us to imagine a decolonial present and future.

Biography:
Yannis Hamilakis is Joukowsky Family Professor of Archaeology and Professor of Modern Greek Studies at Brown University. He worked previously at the Universities of Wales Lampeter (1996-2000) and the University of Southampton (2000-2016), and he has held research fellowships at Princeton University, Getty Research Institute, Cincinnati University, The Institute of Advanced Studies at Princeton, and the Remarque Institute at NYU. His research interests include Aegean prehistory, the socio-politics of the past, the bodily senses, archaeology and photography, contemporary archaeology, and the materiality of contemporary migration. His books include, The Nation and Its Ruins: Antiquity, Archaeology, and National Imagination in Greece (OUP, 2007, Edmund Keeley Book Prize 2009), and Archaeology and the Senses: Human Experience, Memory, and Affect (CUP, 2013). His most recent book is the edited volume, The New Nomadic Age: Archaeologies of Forced and Undocumented Migration. (Equinox, 2018). He co-directs the Koutroulou Magoula Archaeology and Archaeological Ethnography Project, and in 2020 he will be curating an exhibition at the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology at Brown University, entitled, Transient Matter: Border Assemblages in the Mediterranean.

Please join us for the annual Sarah Goddard Power & Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Awards Ceremony.

The Sarah Goddard Power & Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Awards are presented by the Academic Women’s Caucus, which was founded in its current form in 1975. Its initial charge was ” …to develop an inclusive organization of all women faculty members of the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses of the University of Michigan which will serve as a forum for the exchange of information about the status of faculty women at the University and as a focus for action necessary to the investigation and resolution of their special concerns.” To this end, the Caucus has met regularly during the academic year since 1976. It has responded to the concerns of its members by sponsoring informational and problem-solving sessions of various kinds and has provided support and a mechanism for exchange of ideas and action proposals.

2020 SARAH GODDARD POWER AWARD
Sarah Goddard Power was widely acclaimed as a major contributor to the advancement of higher education, an advocate for affirmative action and human rights, and a champion of freedom for the international press. As a Regent of the University of Michigan for more than 12 years, Sarah Goddard Power worked tirelessly to advance the position of women and minorities in faculty and administrative roles.

Regent Sarah Goddard Power originally suggested that the Academic Women’s Caucus present awards to such individuals. In 1984, an Awards Committee was established to select the first recipients of the Academic Women’s Caucus Awards. Thus, it seemed appropriate that the Academic Women’s Caucus Award be renamed to honor Regent Power. In 1988, Regent Philip H. Power graciously consented to allow the Caucus to rename its awards the Academic Women’s Caucus Sarah Goddard Power Award. In 1998, President Lee Bollinger enabled the Award to be offered with an accompanying stipend. Each year, nominations are selected for the Sarah Goddard Power Awards.

2020 Sarah Goddard Power Award Recipients:

Cathleen Connell, Professor, Department of Health Behavior and Health Education, is being honored for her significant achievement in addressing current challenges faced by women through distinguished leadership at the University of Michigan. Dr. Connell began her academic career as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health Behavior and Health Education in the School of Public Health at the University of Michigan in 1989, and rose through the ranks to become Professor in 2003. She has served in many leadership roles in her tenure at the University, including associate and senior associate dean of academic affairs, department and associate chair, and directorships. “Cathleen brings true kindness, empathy and graciousness to her leadership roles. With her attitudes and actions, she has helped make the Department and School a place where female scholars feel comfortable and can thrive personally and professionally,” said Mary Janevic, Ph.D., MPH, in a nominating letter. “Cathleen embodies the characteristics of an inspired leader. A patient listener, she has an innate ability to motivate teams to institute changes, meet goals, and achieve success,” Angela Beck, Assistant Dean for Student Engagement and Practice, School of Public Health, wrote.

Allison Steiner, Professor, Department of Climate and Space Science and Engineering, has provided breakthrough contributions towards developing a diverse and inclusive workforce both at the University of Michigan and in her own scientific field at a national and international level. She receives the Sarah Goddard Power Award for her tireless advocacy towards the advancement of women in Earth Sciences worldwide, and her leadership role in promoting equality for female faculty in the College of Engineering. Allison co-founded the Earth Science Women’s Network (ESWN), an international peer-mentoring network of women in the Earth Sciences, whose mission is to promote career development, build community, provide opportunities for informal mentoring and support, and facilitate professional collaborations. At the University and within the College of Engineering Steiner plays active leadership roles in a variety of programs and efforts to develop and implement strategies and plans to support diversity, equity and inclusion. She chaired the Dean’s Advisory Committee on Female Faculty, is a member of the CoE ADVANCE Advisory Committee and Co-Chaired last year’s NextProf Committee. “Looking through the list of the last few years Sarah Goddard Power Award winners is inspirational… Prof. Allison Steiner’s significant achievements in contributing to the betterment of current challenges faced by women through her leadership and community building roles clearly place her in the same company,” wrote Mark Moldwin, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Professor of Space Sciences and Engineering, in a nominating letter.

2020 RHETAUGH G. DUMAS PROGRESS IN DIVERSIFYING AWARD
The Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Award supports a long-standing vision of increasing the number of diverse women in the academy. Named after late Vice Provost Rhetaugh Dumas, it recognizes outstanding institutional initiative in demonstrating notable progress by academic units in achieving ethnic, racial and gender diversity among those pursuing and achieving tenure as professors, clinical professors, research professors, and research scientists.

Rhetaugh Dumas was an esteemed leader with vision, insight, and wise counsel who had a major impact in the advancement of nursing, healthcare, and academic programs at U-M. Vice Provost Dumas was only the second African-American to hold the position of a Dean at the University of Michigan when she was appointed in 1981, and the first African-American to be named a Dean. She was reappointed Dean of Nursing in 1986 and 1991 to second and third terms. Prior to that appointment, she was the first woman and first nurse to serve as a deputy director of the National Institute of Mental Health. Dumas was Deputy Director, Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Mental Health Administration (1979-1981) and before that Chief, Psychiatric Nursing Education Branch of the Division of Manpower and Training Programs (1972-1976). She was also a founding member, a Charter Fellow, and a former president of the American Academy of Nursing. Dumas served the University of Michigan for over 20 years with vision and a commitment to excellence.

2020 Rhetaugh G. Dumas Progress in Diversifying Award Recipient:
The U-M Women’s Studies Department has been selected for the Rhetaugh Dumas Award for its continued commitment to hiring and promoting a diverse faculty. In the fall of 2019, 50% of Women’s Studies faculty were black and/or people of color. Over the past five years, leadership in Women’s Studies has embodied and practiced an “institutional commitment to change.” Two recent department chairs - Elizabeth Cole and Rosie Ceballo, African American and Latinx, respectively – during those five years have moved on to Assistant, Associate, and interim dean positions at the College of LSA. Beyond their own leadership positions, they also made the effort to hire black women and/or women of color.

ASP Workshop | Afterlives of Catastrophes: “Western Armenia” in Comparative Perspective (February 13, 2020 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68928 68928-17197026@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 13, 2020 5:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Center for Armenian Studies

For complete workshop details, please see: https://ii.umich.edu/asp/news-events/all-events/workshops/february-2020--afterlives-of-western-armenia.html

As a geography and a concept, Western Armenia is a contested category. The same territory is at once imagined and claimed by disparate yet overlapping groups in often mutually exclusive ways as Western Armenia, Eastern Turkey, and Northern Kurdistan. This geography has been home to many peoples over centuries, including Armenians until the 1915 Catastrophe decimated the Ottoman Armenian community and scattered its survivors across the world, where they founded new homes in the diaspora.

As a result of the rupture of 1915, the Armenian Diaspora came into intimate contact with other communities across the globe. At the same time, on the ancestral lands of the exiled Western Armenians, the material and immaterial remnants of their community live on, animated by the memories and narratives recounted by the muslim Kurds, Turks, and Arabs who continue to live there. Taken together, these constitute two asymmetrically mirroring spaces in which afterlives of Western Armenia continue to develop in dynamic relationships with contemporary political and social processes. What are the afterlives of these histories, communities, and trajectories bound up in the notion of Western Armenia? What are the ongoing effects of the 1915 Genocide of Ottoman Armenians, both in the geography where the mass killing and expropriation took place a century ago and in the diasporic communities where Armenians continue to live today? How are histories of violence and exile inscribed both on the landscape through ruins and in the memories of local communities? And how are they reinterpreted and expressed through literature, art, and language?

Cosponsors: College of Literature, Science, and the Arts; Departments of Anthropology, Comparative Literature, and History; Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies; Global Islamic Studies Center; Global Theories of Critique; and Institute for the Humanities.

Behind the Screen: Content Moderation in the Shadows of Social Media (February 21, 2020 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71186 71186-17785588@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 21, 2020 2:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Digital Studies Institute

Faced with mounting pressures and repeated, very public crises, social media firms have taken a new tack since 2017: to respond to criticism of all kinds and from numerous quarters (regulators, civil society advocates, journalists, academics and others) by acknowledging their long-obfuscated human gatekeeping workforce of commercial content moderators. Additionally, these acknowledgments have often come alongside announcements of plans for exponential increases to that workforce, which now represents a global network of laborers – in distinct geographic, cultural, political, economic, labor and industrial circumstances – conservatively estimated in the several tens of thousands and likely many times that. Yet the phenomenon of content moderation in social media firms has been shrouded in mystery when acknowledged at all. In this talk, Sarah T. Roberts will discuss the fruits of her decade-long study the commercial content moderation industry, and its concomitant people, practices and politics. Based on interviews with workers from Silicon Valley to the Philippines, at boutique firms and at major social media companies, she will offer context, history and analysis of this hidden industry, with particular attention to the emotional toll it takes on its workers. The talk will offer insights about potential futures for the commercial internet and a discussion of the future of globalized labor in the digital age.

Sarah T. Roberts is an assistant professor of Information Studies at the UCLA School of Education and Information Studies, specializing in Internet culture, social media, and the intersection of media, technology and society. She is founding co-director, along with Dr. Safiya Noble, of the forthcoming UCLA Center for Critical Internet Inquiry.

Roberts researches information work and workers, and is a leading global authority on “commercial content moderation,” the term she coined to describe the work of those responsible for making sure media content posted to commercial websites fit within legal, ethical, and the site’s own guidelines and standards. She is frequently consulted on matters of policy, worker welfare, and governance related to content moderation issues and the broader social media landscape.

She is a 2018 Carnegie Fellow and winner of the 2018 EFF Barlow Pioneer Award in recognition of her work on commercial content moderation.

How Is Esports Building a Billion-Dollar Empire? (February 21, 2020 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72732 72732-18068367@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 21, 2020 5:30pm

What comes to your mind when you hear the word “Esports”? A billion-dollar empire being built? Causes of addiction and violence? Having come a long way from video gaming, Esports has evolved into a global phenomenon even though controversies persist.

Research shows that 65% of 8-12 years old teenagers play video games for more than 2 hours per day. About 41% of boys think they have spent too much time on video games. Being addicted to video games is only one of many reasons that people are against Esports. From many adults’ perspective, violent, bloody elements in video games are likely to negatively affect teenagers. Hence, Esports is an industry bearing prejudice and stereotypes.

However, as a burgeoning industry, Esports is gaining massive popularity across the globe in recent years. According to Newzoo, revenues of the global Esports industry exceeded $1.1 billion in 2019, which is an increase of 26.7% over the previous year. Asia-Pacific sees the highest proportion of Esports viewership (57%) and the major growth is being witnessed in China. North America is once again the largest Esports market where the major share is contributed by the United States. With more investors, favorable policies, and the potential access to the Olympics, Esports, a new era “gold rush” is redefining the world of games.

From game development, to corporate social responsibility, to higher education, how should Esports navigate the controversies? What factors have contributed to the rise of Esports? What is the future of this industry? Come join us at the Esports panel discussion with Professor Katherine Babiak, Professor Austin Yarger, Ph.D. student Luis Velazquez, Arbor eSports’ president Alexander Ball, and UM Esports program manager Cybbi Barton.

Town Hall Meeting: Socialism and the 2020 elections (February 24, 2020 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73071 73071-18138331@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, February 24, 2020 7:00pm

One word is dominating the 2020 election cycle: socialism.

Donald Trump and his fascist allies declare the US “will never be a socialist country.” Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg proclaim their desire to save the Democratic Party from socialists, while Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) claim socialism means working within the Democratic Party for mild reforms. The ruling class, presiding over a society dominated by inequality, war and state repression, increasingly views socialism as an immediate threat.

The Socialist Equality Party is running in the 2020 elections to explain what socialism really means. Join the SEP’s candidates—Joseph Kishore for President and Norissa Santa Cruz for Vice President—in the historic struggle to unite all workers internationally, independent of the political parties of the ruling class. The working class is the social force that can replace capitalism with international socialism.

This town hall meeting with Joseph Kishore is part of a national series of meetings being held across the United States, hosted by the IYSSE and the SEP.

James Webb Space Telescope: What Happens after the Hubble Space Telescope?

The Hubble Space Telescope has delivered beautiful images and great results for far more years than originally planned. NASA is working on a successor, JWST, which will be launched in 2021. Many technical challenges have had to be overcome to make this telescope a reality. Many of these challenges stem from the large size of JWST and its unique architecture. The science that it promises to deliver ranges from characterizing the atmospheres of planets orbiting other stars to finding the most distant galaxies.

Combating climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing today’s society, and the U.S. National Academy of Engineering has recognized the need to mitigate emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) as one of this century’s grand engineering challenges. Such action is needed to prevent potentially catastrophic shifts in regional temperatures, precipitation patterns, and sea level rise. This teach-in will introduce several emerging opportunities to (1) sequester human-derived CO2 emissions and (2) directly utilize CO2 to create value-added products. Topics will include geologic sequestration of CO2, use of CO2 to produce geothermal energy and store surplus renewable energy in subsurface reservoirs, and direct utilization of CO2 in durable concrete infrastructure products. The presentation will include several hands-on activities to explore these processes and discuss how we can leverage such engineering solutions to slow climate change.

Many job seekers are afraid of negotiation. According to a national survey, over 60% of recent graduates don’t negotiate a job offer, while 80% of those who negotiate are at least partially successful. International scholars may be hesitant to negotiate due to their additional challenges, such as visa considerations and cross-cultural nuances. In this interactive session designed specifically for international students and postdoctoral fellows, attendees will learn about the basic principles of negotiating a job offer, and how to navigate this process in the United States. This event is co-sponsored by Rackham Graduate International (GRIN), Rackham Graduate School, and the U-M Medical School’s Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

TODAY’S EVENT CANCELED: U-M Grad School Fair - Today, March 11

Due to our commitment to ensuring the safety of our students, broader U-M Community and attending grad school representatives, the LSA Opportunity Hub has decided to cancel this evening’s Grad School Fair.

We know there is a great interest in exploring and applying to grad schools, and we are extremely disappointed that you won’t be able to engage with program reps and current grad students as you intended. That access to people and information is invaluable. However, we had to make the difficult decision to cancel to ensure the safety of the broader community. We will work to identify alternative methods for connection to grad school information more broadly and will be sure to communicate those in a way that’s most effective over the coming weeks.

Please feel free to contact the LSA Opportunity Hub directly if you have any questions or concerns.

CANCELED: CLIFF 2020: (Counter)Narratives of Migration (March 13, 2020 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/72845 72845-18261079@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 13, 2020 9:00am
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Comparative Literature

This event has been canceled. Plans to postpone are TBD.

CLIFF is an annual conference organized by graduate students in Comparative Literature. This year’s conference theme, “(Counter)Narratives of Migration,” stems from the current migration crises around the globe, but is not restricted to the present moment. Our conference seeks to interrogate the narrativization, visibility, and media surrounding the movement of bodies, ideas and material objects across concrete and abstract boundaries. We will explore circulation in all its forms, through its various manifestations in the arts, critical theory, and new media.

We are very pleased to announce that this year's keynote speaker will be Ariella Azoulay, Professor of Comparative Literature and filmmaker and art curator, currently teaching at Brown University. Azoulay’s work explores visual culture, offering an in-depth critique of contemporary forms of violence, imperialism and body politics. Her films, exhibitions and scholarship address gendered and racial violence, the Israel-Palestine conflict, civil engagement and human rights. We will be screening her film "Un-documented--Unlearning Imperial Plunder" at 4:30 on Friday March 13th at Palmer, Great Lakes South.

As part of the conference, we will also host a graduate student creative reading on Saturday, March 14th from 7:30-9pm at Bar 327 Braun Court.

Join us for an armchair conversation with Robin DiAngelo, author and Affiliate Associate Professor at the University of Washington, and Elizabeth Moje, Dean of the University of Michigan School of Education. Dr. DiAngelo and Dean Moje will discuss themes and ideas stemming from Dr. DiAngelo's best-selling book, "White Fragility."

White people in the U.S. live in a social environment that protects and insulates them from race-based stress. This insulated environment of racial protection builds white expectations for racial comfort while at the same time lowering the ability to tolerate racial stress. DiAngelo calls this lack of racial stamina "white fragility." White fragility is a state in which even a minimal challenge to the white position becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive responses. These responses function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and maintain white control. DiAngelo will provide an overview of the socialization that inculcates white fragility and provide the perspectives and skills needed to build racial stamina and develop more equitable racial practices.

From the speaker's bio:

Dr. Robin DiAngelo is Affiliate Associate Professor of Education at the University of Washington. In addition, she holds two Honorary Doctorates.

A HISTORY OF RELIGION IN 5 1/2 OBJECTS: Spirituality Meets Sensuality
________________________________________
FRIDAY, MARCH 20
4:00-6:00pm
MICHIGAN LEAGUE
3rd Floor, Room D
________________________________________

Professor Plate takes a fresh and much-needed approach to religion. He
suggests that religious life and practice be understood as deriving from basic sensual experiences. Putting aside questions of belief and abstract ideas, he instead challenges us to begin with the incomplete human body, as he guides our focus toward five ordinary types of objects—stones, incense, drums, crosses, and bread.

His talk is based on his book, A History of Religion in 5 ½ Objects, which is a celebration of the materiality of religious life. Plate moves our understanding of religion away from the current obsessions with God, fundamentalism, and science— and toward the rich depths of this world, this body, these things. Religion, it turns out, has as much to do with our bodies as our beliefs. Maybe more.

A Presentation by S. BRENT PLATE
S. Brent Plate is a writer, editor, public speaker, and is an associate professor of religious studies, by special appointment, at Hamilton College. He is author/editor of fourteen books, including Religion and Film, and Blasphemy: Art that Offends. He is co-founder and managing editor of Material Religion: The Journal of Objects, Art, and Belief, and President of the Association for Religion and Intellectual Life/CrossCurrents.

Unfortunately and due to unforeseen circumstances, this event has been cancelled.

This talk will outline the main pleasure theories developed in early and middle-period China, before turning to discuss the institutions that the pleasure theorists decided must be put in place to foster productive and sustaining sociopolitical relations. It will also show that many of those institutions were put in place during the two Han dynasties, and that the theorists adapted the Five Classics and early masterwork to justify a surprising series of innovations (including voting).

Michael Nylan (Ph.D. '83) began her teaching career at Bryn Mawr College, in the History Department, with an affiliation with the Growth and Structure of Cities program and Political Science. There she began to learn political philosophy from Steven Salkever, an Aristotle expert. After more than a decade at Bryn Mawr, where she founded and led the major in East Asian Studies, in 2001 she moved on to the UC-Berkeley History Department, to work with graduate students in the company of one of the oldest and most distinguished of faculties of Chinese history. Now she writes in three main academic disciplines: the history of early China (roughly 300 BC-AD 300), early Chinese philosophy, and the art and archaeology of China. She has an abiding interest in the use and abuse of history in the modern period, as well as in the politics of the common good, the "logics of legitimacy" inscribed in the implied social contracts forged at different times and places between the rulers and ruled at different times and places. She began research on pleasure theory in early China some eighteen years ago, and because no one was writing on the topic at the time, she took her time with the project, to better understand the precise valences of the vocabulary and tropes the Chinese used to communicate their thoughts in a culture alive to pleasure. Her current projects include a reconstruction of a Han-era Documents classic, writing a general-interest study on the "Four Fathers of History," and compiling a study of the politics of the common good in early China.

Abstract: Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease diagnosed neuropathologically in individuals with a history of exposure to repetitive head impacts (RHI). CTE has received increased attention due to a growing number of deceased former NFL players being diagnosed with the disease postmortem. CTE can only be diagnosed by neuropathological examination. However, provisional clinical research diagnostic criteria have been proposed and studies are underway to develop neuroimaging and fluid biomarkers to diagnose CTE during life. This presentation will provide an overview of what is currently known about CTE, as well as critical knowledge gaps and current and future directions in research.

Light refreshments will be served.

Fundamental changes are unlikely to occur on college campuses without faculty buy-in, support and leadership. Faculty leaders are often much more compelling to their colleagues given their resonance for understanding the lives of other faculty. When changes such as diversity, evidence based teaching practices, and interdisciplinarity are proposed they are much more likely to be scaled if faculty leaders take up the mantle of change. In this session, we explore the role of faculty leaders in shared leadership processes and ways to encourage and support faculty change agents. Drawing on studies of campuses that have promoted key changes, the lessons learned for other campuses will be distilled.

With the existential crisis of our time, climate change, bearing down upon us, there is a need to develop constructive and sustainable solutions. Great strides have been made in generating awareness about climate change, overpopulation, mass extinction of species and other stressors on the environment. In 2019, the City of Ann Arbor declared a Climate Emergency. But how can we as individuals make a difference? Buddhism has always emphasized the interdependence of all living beings and the benefit of interacting compassionately.

The inaugural Jewel Heart Annual Earth Day Forum will present a dialogue between Tibetan Buddhist scholar and teacher, Demo Rinpoche, and eminent scientists and activists. The Forum will address the human and spiritual dimension of sustaining life on this planet.
