Ghostly Labor in the Levantine Prism of Jacqueline Kahanoff (March 9, 2017 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/39497 39497-8093890@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 9, 2017 4:00pm
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Mary A. Rackham Institute

Living in colonial Egypt, Jacqueline Kahanoff had a unique experience shared by the members of her class and generation. Kahanoff was a Jewish Francophone and Anglophone writer from Egypt born to Tunisian grandparents who owned a famous department store. Taking the store as a model for citizenship, she suggests an alternative notion of Mediterranean culture and Egyptian identity, which sought to decentralize European hegemony, a notion which she later dubs “Levantinism.” Amr Kamal analyzes her 1951 novel, Jacob’s Ladder, to examine the process through which Levantine culture developed amid several competing imperial and nationalist projects. In particular, he shows how the novel’s depiction of Levantine spaces documents the marginalized role of the working class in the education of elite Levantine society and its acquisition of cultural capital. His analysis also explores how the construction and sustenance of a celebrated image of the Levantine past depended on the racialization of labor, or what he calls “ethnic classism.” Through this latter process, a labor force made up of other Levantines was Orientalized and relegated to the background where it served to highlight a European-like Levantine cosmopolitanism.

Amr Kamal is Assistant Professor of French, Arabic, and Comparative Literature, at The City College of New York, CUNY. In 2013, he received his PhD in Comparative Literature, from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is currently working on his book, Empires and Emporia: Fictions of the Department Store in the Modern Mediterranean.

German Club: German Studies Panel Presentation

Wednesday, March 15,
4 p.m.,
MLB 2011

The German Club has organized this event, where students will have the opportunity to hear from a panel of professors in the German Department here at the University of Michigan to learn more about the classes taught in Fall 2017 and to learn more about the research fields of the German professors.

Additionally, this event is particularly useful for students (most likely first-year students or sophomores), who are still on the fence about pursuing a German major or minor, are perhaps overwhelmed with the task of getting to know professors within the department, or are interested learning more about the variety of interesting (and oftentimes cross-listed) courses that the department has to offer.

If you have any questions, please contact Brittany (brittboy@umich.edu).

All too often the career of J. J. Winckelmann has been isolated from the wider context which made his career possible: the libertine culture of aristocratic neo-classicism which spread from Italy to France, England, and the Germanies in the eighteenth century and, more importantly, the booming Roman art market which served the Grand Tour. Winckelmann, who had seen almost nothing but Baroque (and medieval) art before arriving in Rome, spent most of his first years in Rome among artists and restorers, who taught him a great deal about the technicalities of classical art. Winckelmann befriended many restorers—including Rome’s most successful, Bartholomeo Cavaceppi—as well as art dealers, men for whom the discernment of styles, authenticity, and iconography were professional and vital requirements. We may not ever know just how much Winckelmann learned from the Roman makers and collectors of casts, copies, and forgeries, or from the dealers, but it was certainly a significant amount. Finally, we need to see Winckelmann’s work too in the context of mercantile attempts to make ‘national’ luxury goods salable on wider European and world markets; the porcelain industry, with its emphasis on ‘whiteness,’ is especially relevant to the making of neoclassical taste.

Anja Burghardt, Assistant Professor of Slavic Studies, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich

"One Soviet Nation? Capturing Ethnic Diversity in Photography of the 1920s and 1930s"

In the early Soviet Union photography played a prominent role in shaping the new society. In the 1920s this new medium was supposed to allow everyone who was part of the Socialist project to participate in photographic expression, either as a photographer or as a subject. Photography captured daily life experience of different people was and made it known to people in distant regions. But how much room was there for self-portrayal of those who were not in the (European) centres of the USSR? By examining photographs of non-Russian ethnic groups, mainly in Central Asia, this presentation discusses choices of motifs and artistic devices, value attributions and ideological implications in shaping the Soviet Nation in photography.

Sabahattin Ali’s theoretical reflections on translation and his role as German to Turkish translator for the state-sponsored Translation Bureau form a central, but largely overlooked aspect of his literary legacy. This paper explores the overlap between Ali’s positions as author and translator vis-à-vis the World Literature in Translation publication series (1940-1966) he helped to both shape and execute. As a case study, I examine the relationship between Ali’s final novel Kürk Mantolu Madonna (1943) (Madonna in a Fur Coat) and his translation of “Die Verlobung in St. Domingo” (1811) (The Betrothal in Santo Domingo). Through an attention to critical narrative gaps in each of these texts, I call attention to the subtle manner in which Ali was able to resist dominant paradigms of translation—such as smooth translatability and civilizational transfer—through his position as a state employee. As such, I document an alternative history of translation in the modern Republic of Turkey that emerges from within a state-sponsored project of culture planning.

Free and open to the public.

“Posthuman Scenarios in Victor Pelevin”

This talk knits together a number of Pelevin’s works from the 1990s to the present, using the prism of posthumanism. It analyzes Pelevin’s representation of the human and the social collective a) in biomorphic and zoomorphic terms b) in terms of machinery. Both scenarios, animalistic and mechanistic, allow the writer to explore his core problematic—that of (un)freedom in contemporaneity.

The Romance Creoles are Not Bastard Tongues; they are Legitimate Offspring of their Lexifiers! (April 12, 2017 4:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/40366 40366-8527309@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 12, 2017 4:30pm

Abstract

It has become both elusive and illusive to characterize creole vernaculars as unique based on their structures or on the nature and/or role of language contact in their emergence. If anything, their emergence is telling us loud and clear how inadequately genetic linguistics has overlooked population movements and language contact as actuators of systemic changes and language speciation. It has not underscored (sufficiently) the significance of substrate influence, systemic hybridization, and typological realignment in language speciation. Focusing on French creoles, I show that the Romance creoles are new Romance vernaculars that diverge from their lexifiers in ways similar to the divergence of the latter from Vulgar Latin. In some ways, the creoles are less divergent from their nonstandard lexifiers than the traditional Romance languages are from theirs, prompting us to factor in the significance of layers of language contact (during their longer history) in shaping the structures of neo-Latin vernaculars in Europe. Their non-rectilinear and non-unilineal evolutions also remind us of the competition that obtained among the numerous neo-Latin vernaculars within their national borders and the particular role of academies in aspiring at linguistic unity and artificially influencing their evolution. Otherwise, creole vernaculars should help us better understand how the Romance languages have evolved! And the ultimate conclusion is that creole vernaculars are far from being “bastard tongues.”

For all too long, waiting has lingered below the threshold of our historical perception. Despite the fact that “waiting is … a key dimension of modernity,” as Craig Jeffrey claims, it “is a temporal region hardly mapped and badly documented” (Harold Schweizer). The moment has come to delve into how those who waited increased their awareness of time as well as of themselves and their place in the world. By bringing waiting in history to the fore, this proect seeks to lead the debate on time away from the existential themes that have dominated its exploration. This first foray into this new terrain is therefore less interested in the final truths about time’s essence than in the temporal poetics of the everyday.

On its face, weather sounds like the most banal and mundane thing possible. When people talk about the weather, we usually take that as a sign of nothing to talk about. This talk aims to show that the accusation that talking about the weather is intellectually empty is hardly the case in the age of climate change, and even dangerous. The history of human interaction with weather is also a history of cultural techniques and media technologies. Dramatists and divines have sought meaning from atmospheric events. Reading the skies is one paradigm case of human-nature interaction, and studying weather can stand in as part for whole as an inquiry into the environments humans have made or unmade. The history of modern weather forecasting is also a history of the militarization of the sky and oceans, and is co-extensive with the history of modern telecommunications and computation. Weather raises two questions of profound interest to recent media theory: how mundane infrastructures are full of meaning and how vaporous or evanescent entities can be tracked, recorded, and programmed. In this way, studying the weather is a special case in media theory’s more general study of how media help constitute the world.

Dagmar Kročanová: Repairing the World in Gejza Vámoš´s Writing

Dagmar Kročanová is associate professor of Slovak literature at Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovak Republic, where she also earned her PhD in theory and history of Slovak literature. She is currently working on an anthology of Slovak modernist and avant-garde drama. Professor Kročanová is currently a Weiser Professional Development Fellow at the University of Michigan working on her project, “Modernism in Slovak Literature between 1900 and 1948,” in cooperation with Benjamin Paloff, associate professor of Slavic languages and literatures and comparative literature.

Gejza Vámoš (1901, Hungary – 1956, Brazil), a Slovak writer of a Hungarian Jewish origin, was once described as an Enfant terrible of Slovak literature. A physician with a PhD in philosophy, Vámoš challenged traditional values of bourgeois society represented by religion, family, and nation. His fiction dealt with issues that were considered shocking and incompatible with the Slovak cultural tradition, such as sexuality, diseases, and women´s emancipation. Vámoš strove to find a unifying principle of universe that would heal the current broken state of mankind. But as his novel Broken Branch (1934) shows, the gap between his dream of repairing the world and the actual state Europe was too deep to be bridged.

The event will start at 6:30pm with a light supper followed by the presentation at 7pm. Please RSVP to slavic@umich.edu.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact the Slavic department (slavic@umich.edu or 734-764-5355) at least 4 days in advance. This talk will examine the short life of German naturalism through a look at the early work of Arno Holz. More even than his literary heroes Émile Zola and Henrik Ibsen, Holz draws on a particular aesthetics of presence with roots in the theater’s placing of real bodies on a real stage in real time. However, Holz’s writings also actively work to destroy any sense of the auratic quality of such presence — not to mention, of art as “Verklärung,” as proposed by the practitioners of German realism and pugnaciously argued against by Holz in his own theoretical works. This talk will examine both the weirdness and the prescience of Holz’s attempts at an anti-apotheotic art in the context of the era’s debates around naturalism vis-à-vis realism, looking also at the fraught legacy of the theater in Germany and the residues of the Baroque stage on the cusp of literary modernism.

Weitzman's book Irony’s Antics: Walser, Kafka, Roth and the German Comic Tradition (Northwestern University Press, 2015) explores the crucial but largely neglected role of the comic and its relation to irony in German-language literature from the Romantic era to the early twentieth century, through an examination of the works of Robert Walser, Franz Kafka, and Joseph Roth, and theories of comedy in Freud, Hegel, and others.

She is also co-editor and contributing author of the volume Suspensionen. Über das Untote (Fink, forthcoming), which considers “the undead” as a figure that challenges not only the life/death binary but also the regimes of knowledge that this structures.

Her current project, tentatively titled “At the Limit of the Obscene: Realism, Profanation, Aesthetics,” deals with how the concept of obscenity relates to questions of representation, perception, and knowledge in nineteenth-century German and European realism and beyond.

Lecture held Thursday, October 12, 2017 from 4-6pm in the RLL Commons.

This paper is an exercise in the history of reading and textual production across early
modern Europe and the Muslim world. Through the analysis of a very short and fascinating miscellaneous manuscript, I aim to disentangle the complex and intertwined relations between European orientalism, Italian intellectual history and Muslim exegesis of the Qur’an in seventeenth-century Florence. Despite its fragmentary nature,
the material, linguistic and doctrinal features of this miscellaneous manuscript
shed a new light on the scholarly practices of the early modern world. This document,
I argue, offers an in-depth understanding of a crucial moment in the development of European orientalism.

Jindrich Toman: The Jewish Town as Represented Space: Prague, 1820s-1830s

Early decades of the nineteenth century provide a number of journalistic and literary sources that describe Prague's Jewish Town. The present talk uses them to determine the range of strategies used in the social construction of urban territoriality. Analysis is based on texts written by local Gentile authors, Czech and German, but also on nostalgic descriptions by Jewish authors who were actually born in the Jewish Town. Based on this, a contrast between insiders and outsiders, or participation and observation, can be worked out. Other perspectives revolve around the concept of the border and its subversion.

The event will start at 6:30pm with a light supper followed by the presentation at 7pm. Please RSVP to slavic@umich.edu

Closed Forms and Canonic Matter: Ending Music at the Turn of the Trecento (November 30, 2017 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/46663 46663-10578199@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 30, 2017 5:00pm

This paper charts an itinerary of concern about the relation between form and matter in the musical thought and compositional processes of trecento Italy. It takes as its starting point the Cronica of Salimbene of Adam, a neglected source of musical commentary on questions central to fourteenth-century ontologies of music: about the status of the voice as a natural instrument; the reliability of sense perception; and the shadowy affinities between music and language. Salimbene’s vivid, often macabre anecdotes about music’s material and formal properties echo in Dante’s poetics and in the music theory of Marchetto da Padova. I then turn to the compositional practices of trecento composers, to show how the earliest generation of Italian polyphonists imported these concerns into aspects of compositional design in ways that foreground closure as a defining potential of form. The form and forming of sound in the Middle Ages were inevitable correlates to considerations of sound as matter. In making this claim, I mean to contribute to a growing recognition of the links between modern critical practices (here sound studies, the history of the senses) and the intellectual history of the Middle Ages.

No More Scantrons and Blue Books!: Electronic Exams in Canvas (December 1, 2017 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/46514 46514-10512732@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, December 1, 2017 10:00am

Electronic exams in Canvas offer several advantages over Scantron and Blue Book exams. For example, it is much easier to read student writing on an electronic exam. Today’s students are use to composing on a keyboard, so it no surprise their penmanship is not always legible. And because students are so proficient with their laptops, it is likely they will compose higher quality writing during an electronic exam. There are other benefits to using electronic exams in Canvas. The Speedgrader feature allows instructors to type responses more efficiently, providing substantive feedback when appropriate. Multiple choice and true/false type questions are graded automatically and sent directly to the gradebook. Exams and grades are preserved for future reference—for example, the next time a student asks for a letter of recommendation. Electronic exams can replace Scantrons and Blue Books, saving faculty and staff a substantial amount of time.

LSA has also added a security feature to Canvas that can lock down the testing environment and preserve academic integrity.

This workshop will introduce participants to the various question types and settings available in Canvas. Participants will also get to explore more advanced features in Canvas, including embedding images and media, setting timed exams and allowing for student accommodations, grading essay questions, and enabling the LockDown Browser. This session is recommended for anyone who wants to learn more the testing features in Canvas; therefore, it is suitable for both faculty and support staff.

Sergei Alipov has been among Russia’s leading sculptors since his first exhibits in the late 1970s. Among his many widely-praised works are his 1991 monument to Alfred Nobel (St Petersburg) and his 2016 monument to the poet Nikolai Klyuev in the poet’s hometown, Vytegra (Vologda region).

Alipov will talk about the highly contentious erection of new and removal of old public statues across the former Soviet Union – a process which has, in the last two decades, been one of the most visible signs of the ongoing disputes about history, responsibility, nationality, and identity. His talk will provide the opportunity not only to reflect on these processes in the post-Soviet space, but also on somewhat analogous issues that are proving to be very contentious in the United States today.

Light refreshments will be served.

This presentation is part of the Winter Colloquium of the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures.
A pre-circulated paper in English is available upon request.

Matthew Handelman will share new work on Gershom Scholem, preeminent scholar of Jewish mysticism with widespread impact on twentieth-century Zionism, culture, and thought. Handelman will highlight the importance of mathematical concepts for understanding Scholem's ideas of aesthetics and negativity and their relationship to critical theorists such as Franz Rosenzweig and Siegfried Kracauer.

Matthew Handelman is an Assistant Professor of German and a member of the Core Faculty in the Digital Humanities at Michigan State University. His research interests include German-Jewish literature and philosophy in the early twentieth century, the intersections of science, mathematics and culture in German-speaking countries, as well as the digital humanities and the history of technology. Matthew has published on these topics in international journals such as The Germanic Review, Scientia Poetica and The Leo Baeck Yearbook. He is currently finishing a manuscript called Negative Mathematics: German Jewish Intellectuals and the Origins of Critical Theory. It explores the underdeveloped possibilities of mathematics in critical theory, focusing on Gershom Scholem, Franz Rosenzweig, and Siegfried Kracauer. A second book project, which explores the relationship between necessity and narration in scientific and aesthetic thought after 1800, is also in the works.

Use What You Have: Art Practice and Survival (February 16, 2018 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/48844 48844-11543703@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, February 16, 2018 10:00am
Location: Modern Languages Building
Organized By: Rackham Interdisciplinary Workshop on Transnational Comics Studies

LECTURE POSTPONED TO FRIDAY 10-12PM REPLACING THE WORKSHOP!

"I would rather talk more generally about art/writing practice and how it fits in with my "civilian" life: why I tell stories and the tools I use in telling them - from autobiographical material, to drawing, to other people's work. I would discuss the difficulties of having an authentic multi-disciplinary art practice and the necessary flexibility in a literary culture that is increasingly about branding and increasingly without pay."

The Thursday lecture will be moderated by prof. Mikhail Krutikov (Slavic/Judaic) and prof. Maya Barzilai (Judaic/German).

The Friday workshop will offer the opportunity to interact with the artist in a less structured and more conversational discussion. Students and general public are welcome to RSVP to vinsalv@umich.edu.

Anya Ulinich is the author of the novel Petropolis (2007) and the graphic novel Lena Finkle's Magic Barrel (2014), both published by Penguin Books. Her stories and essays have appeared in The New York Times, Zoetrope: All-Story, n+1, and PEN America Journal. Ulinich attended the Art Institute of Chicago, holds an MFA from the University of California, Davis, and has taught at NYU and at the Gotham Writer’s Workshop.
