We all have triggers that set us off. Maybe it’s too much traffic or that certain someone who gets under your skin. To be human means sometimes getting caught by life’s irritations and disappointments.

But when that occasional reaction becomes a routine inner state of irritability, anger, anxiety, stress or sadness, you’re in trouble.

You either manage your triggers or your triggers manage you. Unfortunately, just understanding this doesn’t tell you how to change it. This workshop will delve into the reasons we get triggered and how to change our thinking and responses so that we can take back our power.

Through presentation, discussion, and exercises, we will work together to help you find strategies and solutions to help make the shift from your triggered self to your bigger self for a more effective and enjoyable life.

Military Support Programs and Networks (M-SPAN) is a portfolio of initiatives within the University of Michigan Depression Center and Department of Psychiatry dedicated to military and veteran mental health and wellness. M-SPAN integrates innovative approaches to outreach, overcoming stigma, and decreasing isolation, and includes the design and delivery of programs for service members, veterans and military families. Each flagship program was developed in response to identified gaps in services, and includes evidence-based approaches that have been tailored for specific populations. A rigorous program evaluation is integral to each initiative. Programs are incubated and evaluated at the University of Michigan, and disseminated through our partners to maximize impact. This session will cover the various M-SPAN programs serving veterans and their families, right here in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and how service members, veterans, spouses and partners can get involved with each one.

You’ve probably heard of life hacks that help you use your time more efficiently. Why not think about managing your time in the bigger picture? How are you actually using your time? This workshop is based on the book 168 Hours: You Have More Time Than You Think by Laura Vanderkam. You will complete a time-tracking exercise prior to the workshop to help you understand how you actually use your time. During the workshop, we will discuss our results in small groups and strategize ways to fit all the things we would like to into our day.
Registration is required by March 6 at https://myumi.ch/6eYVM.

Data is what drives our economy. We leave trails of personal data as we scroll, click, chat, shop, commute and exercise. In many ways, data is an emerging renewable commodity, as abundant as sunlight. The top 5 largest companies of 2017 are all considered “data companies” that rely on capturing, processing and distributing personal data to garner their market capitalization or pre-market valuation.

Author and Engineer, James Felton Keith will explore the two questions: If our personal data is a naturally occurring resource, just how valuable is it to the other +5 million companies in our economy? And, How much are people owed if they in fact own their data?

Increasingly, hiring committees are interested in how prospective faculty job candidates will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, many academic employers have begun to request a “diversity statement” as part of the faculty job application process. In this interactive session, you will bring a draft of your diversity statement and spend time giving and receiving feedback on it with your peers using a rubric. If you have not yet written a draft diversity statement, you will be better served by first attending “Writing a Diversity Statement.”
