Increasingly, hiring committees are interested in how prospective faculty job candidates will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion. As a result, many academic employers have begun to request a “diversity statement” as part of the faculty job application process. In this interactive session, you will bring a draft of your diversity statement and spend time giving and receiving feedback on it with your peers using a rubric. If you have not yet written a draft diversity statement, you will be better served by first attending “Writing a Diversity Statement.”

However, we know that networking is understood differently in diverse cultural contexts. In this session, a career development expert will 1) share what networking means in the American context and 2) address how students can engage in career activities in comfortable ways. Participants will discuss with peers how networking is different in their cultural contexts, and identify ways that they can successfully network in the American context. This session is a collaboration between Rackham Graduate School, Graduate Rackham International (GRIN), and the Engineering Career Resource Center (ECRC).

Rackham North: It’s in the Syllabus and Other First-Generation College Student Experiences (October 3, 2019 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65419 65419-16597553@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 3, 2019 3:00pm
Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

An immersive, playfully disorienting encounter, It’s in the Syllabus and Other First Generation College Student (FGCS) Experiences offers participants a complex view of a heterogenous identity group: students who are the first generation in their family to attend college. Because this session focuses on interventions instructors can make in the classroom, it is appropriate for faculty, graduate student instructors, and staff who have an instructional role. Participants witness several different intersecting stories about FGCS experiences and challenges, which confront stereotypes about who FGCS are and what they bring to the classroom. Through facilitated activities and discussion, instructors strategize about ways to make their classrooms more inclusive and foster belonging for FGCS.
**The theatrical portion of this session contains strong language.
In this session, participants will:

Discuss barriers that create challenges for FGCS.
Identify specific classroom strategies to better support FGCS.
Consider how to deploy resources on campus relevant to FGCS.

**Early departures can be disruptive to the performance and other participants. Please only register if you are able to attend the entire workshop.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/qgg3e.

Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering

This event is co-sponsored by Rackham Graduate School

Are you interested in the link between science and society? Curious about pathways that allow you to broaden your research? Do you want to learn how to bridge the gap between improved scientific understanding and societally relevant solutions to problems in space and climate science?

This workshop will address these questions, with the goal to consider and develop plans to broaden dissertations that venture beyond basic science research and start to bridge gaps between physical science and societally relevant solutions, including mitigation, adaptation, building resilience, and policy changes. This workshop is the first of three in a series this academic year. It is targeted towards Ph.D. students, although we also encourage interested undergraduates, MS and MEng students to attend.

The workshop will include (1) a panel discussion of four former students who are currently working in applied science, policy, or science communications positions outside of academia to discuss how they charted their path at UM and describe their current positions, and (2) round-table discussions to allow for small-group interactions with these alumni.

PANELISTS:
:: Samantha Basile - Climatologist, Great Lakes Integrated Sciences and Assessments (GLISA)
:: Jared Ferguson - Legislative Aide for Assemblymember Muratsuchi, California State Assembly
:: Amanda Graor - Chief Innovation Officer, Mid-America Regional Council
:: Lizz Ultee - Postdoctoral Fellow, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Rackham North: Distress Signals—Supporting Students Facing Mental Health Challenges (January 23, 2020 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/70233 70233-17552075@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 23, 2020 3:00pm
Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Distress Signals unpacks a common interaction—Jade visits her professor during office hours to discuss an extension for a paper—into a complex meditation on mental health and instructor responsibility. The performance (which at first unfolds chronologically and then repeats certain interactions with different faculty behavioral choices) is interspersed with facilitated discussion. Together, audiences examine the productive and problematic behaviors and attitudes on display in the instructor’s choices, and receive research-based strategies and campus resources to help them better support students. This session is appropriate for faculty, graduate student instructors, and academic leaders.
In this session, participants will:

Familiarize themselves with current information about the landscape of student mental health issues.
Identify principles that can productively shape instructor interactions with students in mild to moderate distress.
Reflect on how their own practice of supporting students in distress might be informed by these principles.
Receive information about relevant campus resources, proactive ways of supporting student well-being, and steps to take to support a student in high distress.

An active attacker situation can cause panic and disbelief. Knowing what to do in advance increases your chances of surviving and your reaction matters. While you may have received ALICE active attacker training during your previous educational experiences, the university’s training is very different. The university—unlike primary education settings—is an open environment in the middle of a city. In addition, the training you receive in this session will apply to how you respond to an active attacker in other contexts—at a place of worship, at a movie theater, etc. A representative from the Division of Public Safety and Security will be on hand to conduct training in the event of an active attacker and to field questions from graduate students.

The Role of Creative Media in Hong Kong Protests (February 18, 2020 7:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/72963 72963-18107870@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, February 18, 2020 7:00am
Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Hong Kong Human Rights Concern Group

Creative media became a form of passive protest and connected people who shared the same emotions during social unrest in Hong Kong. In this exhibition, we will explore the incredible artworks created in this democratic movement.

Since June, protests have been ongoing in Hong King, sparked by The Fugitive Offenders and Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Legislation (Amendment) Bill 2019. In one of the demonstrations, over two million Hongkongers, which is more than a quarter of the population, went on the streets to express their objection to the bill, and later led to a large scale democratic movement. It is important to note, however, that physical protests and demonstrations were not the only methods Hong Kong people used to voice their opinions. Creation of promotional art pieces, music, videos, and memes were sparked by the protests and played a significant role in the democratic movement.

After 2/12, this exhibit will be available for viewing from 2/18 through 2/27 in the Pierpont Commons Piano Lounge.

Neurulation is a key embryonic developmental process that gives rise to neural tube (NT), the precursor structure that eventually develops into the central nervous system (CNS). Understanding the molecular mechanisms and morphogenetic events underlying human neurulation is important for the prevention and treatment of neural tube defects (NTDs) and neurodevelopmental disorders. However, animal models are limited in revealing many fundamental aspects of neurulation that are unique to human CNS development. Furthermore, the technical difficulty and ethical constraint in accessing neurulation-stage human embryos have significantly limited experimental investigations of early human CNS development.
I leveraged the developmental potential and self-organizing property of human pluripotent stem cells (hPSCs) in conjunction with 2D and 3D bioengineering tools to achieve the development of spatially patterned multicellular tissues that mimic certain aspects of human neurulation, including neuroectoderm patterning and dorsal-ventral (DV) patterning of NT.
In the first section, I report a micropatterned hPSC-based neuroectoderm model, wherein pre-patterned geometrical confinement induces emergent patterning of neuroepithelial (NE) and neural plate border (NPB) cells, mimicking neuroectoderm patterning during early neurulation. My data support the hypothesis that in this hPS cell-based neuroectoderm patterning model, two tissue-scale morphogenetic signals, cell shape and cytoskeletal contractile force, instruct NE / NPB patterning via BMP-SMAD signaling. This work provides evidence of tissue mechanics-guided neuroectoderm patterning and establishes a tractable model to study signaling crosstalk involving both biophysical and biochemical determinants in neuroectoderm patterning.
In the second section, I report a human NT development model, in which NT-like tissues, termed NE cysts, are generated in a bioengineered neurogenic environment through self-organization of hPSCs. DV patterning of NE cysts is achieved using retinoic acid and/or Sonic Hedgehog, featuring sequential emergence of the ventral floor plate, p3 and pMN domains in discrete, adjacent regions and dorsal territory that is progressively restricted to the opposite dorsal pole.

For students dreaming of careers in science, technology, engineering and math fields, at public research universities like the U-M, introductory courses in these subjects are the first steps on a path to a STEM degree.

The class sizes are huge. They also can be challenging, causing many students to stumble on these first steps.

As a result, students often shift course, abandoning their dreams of working in a STEM discipline, researchers say.

University of Michigan Engineering is excited to welcome Dr. Timothy McKay to our DEI lecture series for the month of February. His lecture will be focused on the Sloan Equity and Inclusion in STEM Introductory Courses (SEISMIC) project – a multi-university initiative to tackle equity and inclusion in STEM.

He will discuss ways that institutions can collaborate to ensure courses are diverse, equitable and inclusive for students.

Racial microaggressions can be uniquely harmful to their targets, and yet we often times find ourselves skirting around this subset of microaggressions due to the discomfort of openly discussing race, racism, and white supremacy. In this workshop we hope to foster an intellectually humble environment within which to unpack racial microaggressions, address common barriers to intervening when a racial microaggressions is inflicted, and provide tools for successfully intervening in the future.
This workshop is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Space is limited. For faculty and staff, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/mndqo.
