The world is changing and so is Jewish feminism. At this critical juncture, the University of Michigan School of Social Work’s Jewish Communal Leadership Program (JCLP) has brought together three unique individuals who center feminism as a Jewish value. Join JCLP and April Baskin, Rabbi Lizzi Heydemann and Sarah Hurwitz as we relate the legacies of Jewish feminism to what it means to confront today’s opportunities and challenges. The Polarization of Partisanship: A WeListen Staff Discussion (July 26, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/64331 64331-16316439@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, July 26, 2019 11:00am
Location: School of Social Work Building
Organized By: WeListen Staff

This WeListen session is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!

RSVP here: http://bit.ly/WLJuly19

Polarization has become a buzzword used to describe the current state of U.S. politics, and a perceived lack of dialogue across the political spectrum. People who gravitate toward political extremes tend to dominate news coverage, while the 'exhausted majority' who are more flexible in their views are often forgotten in public discourse.

Are we truly polarized with regard to our political views? Do the media play a role in this divide, whether perceived or real? And how does the two-party system contribute to polarization? Join us for a lively discussion on where we stand and where we're headed.

Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Questions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu.

This event is co-sponsored by the UM Office of DEI and the LSA DEI Implementation Leads. The planning committee includes staff members from the Ginsberg Center, the International Institute, LSA Psychology, UM Poverty Solutions, and the UM Shared Services Center.

Jewish Community, Race, and Social Justice with Ilana Kaufman (November 5, 2019 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/68611 68611-17105371@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, November 5, 2019 7:00pm
Location: School of Social Work Building
Organized By: Trotter Multicultural Center

Ilana Kaufman’s talk, “Jewish Community, Race, and Social Justice” will be presented free and open to the public on Tuesday, November 5 from 7-9 pm. The event will be held in the Educational Conference Center of the School of Social Work (1080 S University Ave). She will discuss the intersection of U.S. Jewish identity and race, as animated by modern movements for social justice. Informed by community pain-points such as Jewish communal reactions to the Women’s March and the Movement for Black Lives Platform, Kaufman will explore notions of anti-Semitism, community and movement-building, and how to effectively partner with groups despite some fundamental disagreements and tensions.

Ilana Kaufman is the Executive Director of the Jews of Color Field Building Initiative. Kaufman’s work aims to draw attention to those in the Jewish community who have diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, namely non-white and non-Ashkenazi heritage, or of multiple racial and ethnic identities. These individuals, many of whom identify as Jews of Color, have historically been underrepresented in our Jewish institutions and largely invisible in Jewish demographic studies. Through the Jews of Color Field Building Initiative, Kaufman develops more accurate demographic information about how many American Jews of Color there are and how to create more inclusive Jewish communities. She focuses on grantmaking to programs that support Jews of Color, research and field building, and community education.

The event is generously sponsored by the Jewish Communal Leadership Program in the School of Social Work, Trotter Multicultural Center, Michigan Hillel, The School of Social Work Office for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, LSA Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the Jean and Samuel Frankel Center for Judaic Studies.
