Ada Lovelace Day is an international day celebrating the achievements of women in science, technology, engineering, and maths. At the University of Michigan Library, we’re celebrating Ada Lovelace Day by contributing to and improving Wikipedia articles related to intersectional feminism and technology, including women in STEM, underrepresented groups in technology, and other related topics.

We'll provide tutorials for the beginner Wikipedian, reference materials, and refreshments. It's free! Everyone welcome! No previous experience required! Please RSVP: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/ada-lovelace-day-wikipedia-edit-a-thon-tickets-37882488543

Bring your laptop, power cord, and ideas for entries that need updating or creation. For the editing-averse, we urge you to stop by and learn more about Wikipedia and discover hidden figures from the history of technology and computing.

Please create a Wikipedia account before the event (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:CreateAccount&returnto=Main+Page). Once you've created an account, visit our event page dashboard (https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/University_of_Michigan/Ada_Lovelace_Day_Edit-a-thon) and register by selecting “Join program” and entering the passcode: ada.

Want to get a head start with training? We’re offering three workshops (http://ttc.iss.lsa.umich.edu/ttc/?s=wikipedia) in preparation for the event, including one online delivered via BlueJeans for remote participants.

Students, nominated by their instructors, have been invited to read their own poems and short stories to a peer audience. For many student writers, Café Shapiro is a first opportunity to read publicly from their creative work. For others, it provides a fresh audience, and the ability to experience the work of students they may not encounter in writing classes.

Through its over 20 years of existence, Café Shapiro has evolved to become several nights of sharing among some of our best undergraduate writers, their friends, families, and the wider community. This year there are a total of 46 students participating over five days. We'll have light refreshments available. Please stop by!

This workshop from Justin Bonfiglio of the U-M Library Copyright Office serves as both an introduction and a deeper dive into resources like Cornell's Copyright Term and the Public Domain in the United States, the US Copyright Office's Online Catalog, and the Catalog of Copyright Entries. There are many good copyright resources available online, but some of them can be challenging to navigate. What is the US copyright term for a work published today? Do you know how to search for a copyright renewal record? How about a copyright registration?

Please register via TeachTech or by contacting Justin at jbonfig@umich.edu.

Join the International Youth and Students for Social Equality (IYSSE) as we participate in an international online May Day rally!

What: Gathering hosted by the IYSSE to listen and contribute remarks to an online May Day rally organized by the International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI) and the World Socialist Web Site
When: May 5 at 5pm
Where: Shapiro Undergraduate Library, Room 2124

May 5, 2018 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx, the greatest philosopher of modern history and the founder of scientific socialism. Marx's call: “Workers of the world unite!” resonates today amid an eruption of the class struggle on every continent. In the first four months of 2018, tens of millions of people have participated in the largest demonstrations and strikes in decades.

The capitalist system, based on the exploitation of the working class, is wracked by crisis.

All over the world, the ruling elites seek to protect their wealth and save this bankrupt system by resorting to war and repression. The governments and corporations are censoring the Internet out of fear that this revolutionary source for information and communication can link workers across the world in a common struggle against inequality, dictatorship and war.

The International Committee of the Fourth International (ICFI) and the World Socialist Web Site are commemorating Marx's birthday alongside May Day, the international day of working class solidarity, with an international online rally with participants from dozens of countries worldwide. Speakers will include leaders of the Fourth International from around the world.

Explore ways to design collaborative in-class activities that help students achieve course learning outcomes and develop a deeper understanding of the content.

Participants will walk away with ten activities they can use to engage students — today. Learn why the activities work and how each activity has been used in an actual college classroom.
