Everyone thinks they know what digital means. So pervasive are digital technologies in the 21st century that it is difficult to find critical distance from this immersive new world of ubiquitous connectivity, social media feeds, smartphones, mobile apps, responsive design, algorithmic recommendation systems, and voice-controlled home shopping assistants. While the question “what is the digital?” is compelling, the more pressing question might be instead: what does it mean to be alive in the digital age?

The 2019 Michigan Meetings will be a year-long event that critically engages with the big issues, urgent consequences, and radical possibilities for grappling with the meaning of life in this era of digital ubiquity. Whether defined as “animated corporeal existence,” “vitality,” or “to continue, to remain,” we see a profound opportunity to approach the digital world through a spectrum of the meaning of life-ness - alive, liveness, animated, lifelike, life-adjacent, consciousness, awareness, attention, awoke.

Digital culture reconfigures the way we know our bodies, our selves, our work, our objects and living spaces, our politics, and our sense of community. Like prior technologies, the digital gives rise to distinct new modes of experiencing time and space. Life is lived through constant network connectivity, GPS positioning, software databases, biotechnologies and wearable activity trackers, ‘smart’ buildings, cities, and homes, migrant digital labor, computational modeling, and the management of unfathomable streams of big data, and artificial intelligence. Subsequently, life is also lived through anxieties about identity theft, hacking, online harassment, piracy, surveillance and drone warfare.

Across campus, these questions will emerge in courses, colloquia, lectures, and informal conversations among students, faculty, staff, and peers. We aim to support meaningful and rewarding work in the technology industries or in academic research by giving students and faculty the history, critical perspective, and rigorous deep-dive into humanistic questions of “new” media life with this 2019 theme.

Panel Speakers:
Andre Brock, Georgia Tech
Carmen Aguilar y Wedge, HyphenLabs
Lionel Robert, U-M School of Information
Sophia Brueckner, U-M Art and Design

In a 2018 study of social media use in America, the Pew Research Center found that 18-to 24-year-olds "stand out for embracing a variety of platforms and using them frequently." They use multimodal platforms more frequently than their elders and they are more likely to use platforms that are visually dominant (YouTube, SnapChat, and Instagram).

Are their skills in visual and multimodal communication evident in their academic engagement? How do our disciplinary curricula help them develop technical skills and prepare them to be critical practitioners in visual culture? What challenges and opportunities lie on the horizon, why does it all matter - and how does the study of comics apply?

Sponsored by the University of Michigan Library, the Duderstadt Center, the Ann Arbor District Library, the University of Michigan Arts Engine, and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design.

Michigan Engineering Design Expo (December 6, 2018 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/56937 56937-14032733@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, December 6, 2018 12:00pm
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Multidisciplinary Design Program

See how Michigan Engineering students are designing solutions to our world's challenges.

The College of Engineering Design Expo is held twice a year to provide a public forum for engineering students to demonstrate applications of their studies to real-life needs. Students gain valuable experience by presenting their work.

Through this venue, the greater University community and general public has the opportunity to learn how Michigan's students are contributing in significant ways to solving major technology challenges across various disciplines.

These student projects consist of internal University of Michigan projects, non-profit community projects, and industry-sponsored projects. Many of these projects are part of Senior Design Project Courses, but other project groups are welcome and encouraged to participate. Student groups that would like to present must register for a first-come, first-served spot by November 1st.

This event is held in multiple North Campus locations including the Duderstadt Center, Bob & Betty Beyster Building, Pierpont Commons, EECS Building, G.G. Brown Building, and Chrysler Center.

For more information, contact Lindsey Dowswell in the Multidisciplinary Design Program office at lindsd@umich.edu or (734) 763-0818.

Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Runyonland Productions

For the Record is an original work written by Broadway performer and University of Michigan faculty member Geoff Packard. Runyonland Productions has been workshopping the show with the playwright, and this production will be the piece’s world premiere. Taking place in the Duderstadt Video Studio, For the Record explores the world of a young man trying to escape the history of his family, haunted by the genetic disposition of Huntington’s disease. He learns no matter how hard you try, you can’t escape what’s written in your DNA.

Geoff is delighted to be debuting the production in Ann Arbor with Runyonland, stating,

“I believe that Thomas Laub and his Runyonland Productions, are an exciting blend of positive energy, tenacity, and grit--all things necessary when bringing new works into the world. In the theatre, we ought to have a nurturing environment for the often-painful process of creating new works. I am optimistic that both the immense talent of its artists, and the intelligence of its audiences, will make Ann Arbor a nurturing environment for artistic achievement and a great incubator for new work.”

Acoustical Methods for Cavitation Control in Shockwave Lithotripsy and Histotripsy (January 25, 2019 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/59701 59701-14780081@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, January 25, 2019 10:00am
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Biomedical Engineering

The overall goal of the work presented in this dissertation is to develop acoustic mechanisms to modulate, or manipulate, cavitation events in histotripsy and lithotripsy therapies in order to achieve efficient and fast histotripsy, high shock rate lithotripsy, and active tissue protection. We investigated the effects of applying properly tuned low pressure acoustic pulses before and during therapy in order to control the cavitation threshold, the shape of the resulting bubble cloud, and the behavior and interactions of residual microbubbles.

Histotripsy is a tissue ablation method that utilizes focused high amplitude ultrasound to generate a cavitation bubble cloud that mechanically fractionates tissue. Effective histotripsy depends on initiation, control, and maintenance of cavitation bubble clouds in the targeted area. The work in this dissertation seeks to develop active tissue protection techniques by modulating the pressure threshold of bubble cloud initiation and focal sharpening using bubble suppressing pulses. We demonstrated that by applying a properly tuned low pressure pulse sequence before and/or during shock scattering histotripsy therapy, both the cavitation initiation pressure threshold and the growth of the cavitation bubble can be modified. This mechanism can be used to produce well defined lesions with minimal collateral damage. It can also be a way to actively protect soft tissue from cavitation damage during both lithotripsy and histotripsy by increasing the pressure threshold for bubble cloud initiation in the periphery zone.

Cavitation also plays a significant role in the efficacy of stone comminution during shockwave lithotripsy (SWL). Although cavitation on the surface of urinary stones helps to improve stone fragmentation, cavitation bubbles along the propagation path may shield or block subsequent shockwaves and potentially induce collateral tissue damage. At low firing rates, there is sufficient time for the majority of the bubbles to passively dissolve, while at high firing rates the per shockwave efficacy is significantly reduced due to pre-focal persisting bubbles. We investigated acoustic methods for removing residual bubble nuclei in order to avoid shielding effects. Previous in vitro work has shown that applying low amplitude acoustic waves after each shockwave can force bubbles to consolidate and enhance SWL efficacy. In this work, the feasibility of applying acoustic bubble coalescence (ABC) in vivo was examined. We further optimized the parameters of bubble coalescing pulses, and conducted a feasibility investigation of bubble dispersion by forcing the residual bubble nuclei to disperse from the propagation path away or toward the targeted area before the arrival of the next therapy pulse. These results suggest that manipulation of residual bubbles after each shockwave can be further optimized by acoustic bubble coalescence and dispersion, which can reduce the shielding effect of residual bubble nuclei more efficiently than relying only on immediate coalescence of residual bubbles, resulting in a more efficient SWL treatment.

This workshop will provide an overview of several different types of interviews and how to best prepare for each, including behavioral, technical, case, and phone/Skype interviews. We will review strategies for answering interview questions, such as the STAR format, and discuss what to emphasize when answering interview questions. Preparing for common interview questions is only one part of the process - learn what to wear and bring to an interview and how to follow up with an employer after the interview. Come learn how to ace the interview!

This is a College of Engineering event.

Productiv is an Accel-backed Series A company. The same people who built Google Analytics/Maps/Search, YouTube Monetization, eBay Marketplaces, Amazon Infrastructure, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Facebook React, Postmates, Polyvore, TiVo, and Microsoft Teams are re-thinking how enterprises unlock application productivity for their people.

We are defining the new standard for SaaS application productivity. In a world where an explosion of enterprise SaaS adoption has created new organizational challenges and opportunities, we provide an intelligent platform to solve both. Easy to setup, simple and intuitive, and yet incredibly powerful to seamlessly scale. We help enterprises get the most out of their SaaS applications and unlock application productivity for their people.

We are early in our journey with a much larger vision. For you, there are a lot of challenging problems to solve, a lot to learn, and a lot of fun to be had.

Stop by our table to meet some of our co-founders and engineers. We look forward to adding more University of Michigan alumni to our team, for both full-time and summer internship positions in our downtown Palo Alto and Bellevue offices.

How do we define memes? How have they come to define us? How can we critically analyze these ubiquitous pools of relief from near-constant existential dread? Navigate your browser/person to the Duderstadt Center Design Studio at 7 PM on Wednesdays for this interactive discussion + workshop with Michelle Sheng.

This series is a Duderstadt Center MicroFellowship project lead by Michelle Sheng, a senior in Computer Science and Art & Design who grew up on the internet. Virtual spaces and languages are her home away from home. She hopes to analyze it as critically as any other space that shapes people. As a digital citizen, her favorite hobbies are checking international Google doodles, ranking meme variants, and bookmarking webpages she'll never read like clipping photos out of travel magazines. What is fair use and why is it so important for scholarship, expression, inquiry, and more? Fair use is a unique feature of American copyright law that supports freedom of speech under the First Amendment of the US Constitution. Other countries are adopting fair use — South Korea and recently South Africa, for example. Join us for a conversation with Melissa Levine, Director of the U-M Library’s Copyright Office. Organized with Sheila Garcia and Gabriel Duque.

Lunch will be provided. If you have any questions about the event, please contact copyright@umich.edu.

Macquarie Correctional Centre, based in Wellington New South Wales (NSW), is Australia’s first pilot of a new model of imprisonment, moving away from punishment to investment in the individual, using education and the arts. This panel will discuss the model from a management, community, artistic and inmate standpoint.

The pilot’s artistic delivery partner, Orana Arts, is an organization that uses the arts to build engagement. Orana Arts invests in the individual and provide real opportunities for individual and collective change: internally through skills development and externally through their social enterprise hub.

“Beyond Solidarity” traces a genealogy of rebel care work. Without imposing a future, what political, cultural and social questions emerge when we center dignity in thinking beyond solidarity? Specifically with regards to the complimentary, contested and contradictory relationships between the university and the prison, who produces and benefits from the creation and production of knowledge? What is considered knowledge?

What is the role of Ethnic Studies in how we imagine and create a society not centered and organized around the idea that vengeance is justice, that punishment should only mean exile and imprisonment? What is the role of the university in the after-life of incarceration and the after-life of detention, for the communities that students come from, or in relation to policy or pedagogy? How does/can the university reproduce and undue the prison as a total institution? (Strike for print material)

Alan Eladio Gómez is a historian, Southwest Borderlands Scholar and associate professor of justice and social inquiry in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. He is also an affiliated faculty member with the School of Transborder Studies and the Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts. Gómez is the author of The Revolutionary Imaginations of Greater Mexico: Chicana/o Radicalism, Solidarity Politics & Latin American Social Movements [used italics because I assume this is a book and not a journal article] (University of Texas Press, 2016)

Methods and Systems for Rapid, Noninvasive Ablation of a Large Tissue-Target Using Histotripsy (April 4, 2019 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/62571 62571-15405810@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 4, 2019 9:00am
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Biomedical Engineering

Percutaneous local ablation techniques including radiofrequency and microwave ablation are increasingly supplanting surgical resection as the standard of care for solid-tumor intervention due to lower risk of complications, lower costs, and shorter associated hospital stays. However, these techniques present several risks associated with device insertion and traditionally struggle to treat tumors greater than 3 cm in diameter. Thermally-based high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and stereotactic body radiation (SBRT) are noninvasive but have been shown to cause significant collateral damage to adjacent healthy tissues and may require an excessively long treatment time. Thus, there is an unmet need for a noninvasive ablation technique capable of treating large tumors rapidly and safely.

Histotripsy is a completely extracorporeal, non-thermal ultrasound ablation technique which uses high-amplitude, short-duration, focused acoustic pulses at low duty cycle to homogenize target-tissue into an acellular slurry by means of finely-controlled acoustic cavitation. Previous studies have demonstrated that histotripsy is capable of noninvasive tissue-ablation in vivo for a broad spectrum of applications. This dissertation investigated methods and systems toward the clinical translation of histotripsy for the treatment of large-volume tissue-targets. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was selected as a test-case to frame development efforts.

In the first part of this dissertation, strategies for accelerating treatment based on electronic focal steering of a phased array histotripsy transducer were investigated. Research was centered around the management and manipulation of residual cavitation nuclei, hundreds of which are dispersed throughout the focus following collapse of the cavitation bubble cloud produced by each histotripsy pulse and perturb subsequent de novo cavitation at the intended focus. A novel method in which low-gain regions of the therapy beam were utilized to drive the coalescence of residual nuclei via the secondary Bjerknes force was developed and validated. Results demonstrated 99.9% complete ablation of a 27-mL volume (equivalent to a sphere 3.7 cm in diameter) within 30 s.

In the second part of this dissertation, compensation methods for respiratory motion of abdominal organs during histotripsy treatment were investigated. Like HIFU, SBRT, and several imaging modalities, histotripsy is sensitive to the periodic respiratory motion of abdominal organs, which oscillate with up to 4 cm peak-to-trough amplitude and at up to 3 cm/s during normal respiration. Without compensation for respiratory motion there is an elevated risk of under-treating target-tissue, damaging adjacent healthy tissues and prolonging treatment. This part of the dissertation reviews existing methods for respiratory motion compensation, explores the feasibility of integrating these methods with histotripsy therapy, and presents a novel cavitation-based motion tracking technique. Using this technique, residual cavitation nuclei were coalesced into a small bubble-system and used as an in situ fiducial marker which was tracked throughout a predefined trajectory by a histotripsy therapy system capable of receiving acoustic backscatter signals. Results demonstrated the feasibility of receiving acoustic signals from this fiducial cavitation bubble cloud throughout a 16-cm trajectory with a mean error of 0.7 ± 0.3 mm.

In the final part of the dissertation, novel design and fabrication techniques were developed for a real-time-ultrasound-imaging guided, highly steerable phased array histotripsy transducer for liver ablation featuring arbitrarily shaped, densely, packed, and easily replaceable elements. High-powered transducers are the key enabling technology for histotripsy. Our lab has demonstrated the use of rapid prototyping methods for the fabrication of histotripsy arrays but these techniques have been limited to producing arrays with low packing density (~60%). The transducer design methods presented herein implemented a series of algorithms which analyzed human CT data to define the geometry of the array’s aperture, divided the aperture into discrete, nesting elements, and simulated the electronic focal steering range of this aperture as a function of the number of elements into which it was divided. Novel fabrication methods facilitated a very small gap (0.5 mm) between active piezoelectric material which resulted in a packing density >90%. The design of the array is presented, and the fabrication process and performance of individual elements are described. Simulation shows that this array is capable of electronically steering over a range sufficient to treat tissue-targets up to 3.6 cm in diameter in porcine or human subjects.

“Engineering science” courses are technical courses at the sophomore or junior level that are non-lab and non-design courses. While these courses make up a significant portion of students’ engineering education, they have received less research focus than design courses. In this talk we will present the beginnings of a framework capturing two overarching research questions: What should students learn in engineering science courses? And How should students learn in engineering science courses? We will then present two current research studies that each address these two questions. In the first we will describe the development of a coding scheme to characterize the degree to which instructors facilitate student sense-making in class and demonstrate how it is applied to question-initiated dialogue in two courses. In the second we will examine how students in one engineering science course solved and evaluated their answers for open-ended mathematical modeling problems.
