Productiv is an Accel-backed Series A company. The same people who built Google Analytics/Maps/Search, YouTube Monetization, eBay Marketplaces, Amazon Infrastructure, LinkedIn Sales Navigator, Facebook React, Postmates, Polyvore, TiVo, and Microsoft Teams are re-thinking how enterprises unlock application productivity for their people.

We are defining the new standard for SaaS application productivity. In a world where an explosion of enterprise SaaS adoption has created new organizational challenges and opportunities, we provide an intelligent platform to solve both. Easy to setup, simple and intuitive, and yet incredibly powerful to seamlessly scale. We help enterprises get the most out of their SaaS applications and unlock application productivity for their people.

We are early in our journey with a much larger vision. For you, there are a lot of challenging problems to solve, a lot to learn, and a lot of fun to be had.

Stop by our table to meet some of our co-founders and engineers. We look forward to adding more University of Michigan alumni to our team, for both full-time and summer internship positions in our downtown Palo Alto and Bellevue offices.

How do we define memes? How have they come to define us? How can we critically analyze these ubiquitous pools of relief from near-constant existential dread? Navigate your browser/person to the Duderstadt Center Design Studio at 7 PM on Wednesdays for this interactive discussion + workshop with Michelle Sheng.

This series is a Duderstadt Center MicroFellowship project lead by Michelle Sheng, a senior in Computer Science and Art & Design who grew up on the internet. Virtual spaces and languages are her home away from home. She hopes to analyze it as critically as any other space that shapes people. As a digital citizen, her favorite hobbies are checking international Google doodles, ranking meme variants, and bookmarking webpages she'll never read like clipping photos out of travel magazines. What is fair use and why is it so important for scholarship, expression, inquiry, and more? Fair use is a unique feature of American copyright law that supports freedom of speech under the First Amendment of the US Constitution. Other countries are adopting fair use — South Korea and recently South Africa, for example. Join us for a conversation with Melissa Levine, Director of the U-M Library’s Copyright Office. Organized with Sheila Garcia and Gabriel Duque.

Lunch will be provided. If you have any questions about the event, please contact copyright@umich.edu.

Macquarie Correctional Centre, based in Wellington New South Wales (NSW), is Australia’s first pilot of a new model of imprisonment, moving away from punishment to investment in the individual, using education and the arts. This panel will discuss the model from a management, community, artistic and inmate standpoint.

The pilot’s artistic delivery partner, Orana Arts, is an organization that uses the arts to build engagement. Orana Arts invests in the individual and provide real opportunities for individual and collective change: internally through skills development and externally through their social enterprise hub.

“Beyond Solidarity” traces a genealogy of rebel care work. Without imposing a future, what political, cultural and social questions emerge when we center dignity in thinking beyond solidarity? Specifically with regards to the complimentary, contested and contradictory relationships between the university and the prison, who produces and benefits from the creation and production of knowledge? What is considered knowledge?

What is the role of Ethnic Studies in how we imagine and create a society not centered and organized around the idea that vengeance is justice, that punishment should only mean exile and imprisonment? What is the role of the university in the after-life of incarceration and the after-life of detention, for the communities that students come from, or in relation to policy or pedagogy? How does/can the university reproduce and undue the prison as a total institution? (Strike for print material)

Alan Eladio Gómez is a historian, Southwest Borderlands Scholar and associate professor of justice and social inquiry in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University. He is also an affiliated faculty member with the School of Transborder Studies and the Herberger Institute of Design and the Arts. Gómez is the author of The Revolutionary Imaginations of Greater Mexico: Chicana/o Radicalism, Solidarity Politics & Latin American Social Movements [used italics because I assume this is a book and not a journal article] (University of Texas Press, 2016)

Methods and Systems for Rapid, Noninvasive Ablation of a Large Tissue-Target Using Histotripsy (April 4, 2019 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/62571 62571-15405810@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 4, 2019 9:00am
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Biomedical Engineering

Percutaneous local ablation techniques including radiofrequency and microwave ablation are increasingly supplanting surgical resection as the standard of care for solid-tumor intervention due to lower risk of complications, lower costs, and shorter associated hospital stays. However, these techniques present several risks associated with device insertion and traditionally struggle to treat tumors greater than 3 cm in diameter. Thermally-based high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and stereotactic body radiation (SBRT) are noninvasive but have been shown to cause significant collateral damage to adjacent healthy tissues and may require an excessively long treatment time. Thus, there is an unmet need for a noninvasive ablation technique capable of treating large tumors rapidly and safely.

Histotripsy is a completely extracorporeal, non-thermal ultrasound ablation technique which uses high-amplitude, short-duration, focused acoustic pulses at low duty cycle to homogenize target-tissue into an acellular slurry by means of finely-controlled acoustic cavitation. Previous studies have demonstrated that histotripsy is capable of noninvasive tissue-ablation in vivo for a broad spectrum of applications. This dissertation investigated methods and systems toward the clinical translation of histotripsy for the treatment of large-volume tissue-targets. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was selected as a test-case to frame development efforts.

In the first part of this dissertation, strategies for accelerating treatment based on electronic focal steering of a phased array histotripsy transducer were investigated. Research was centered around the management and manipulation of residual cavitation nuclei, hundreds of which are dispersed throughout the focus following collapse of the cavitation bubble cloud produced by each histotripsy pulse and perturb subsequent de novo cavitation at the intended focus. A novel method in which low-gain regions of the therapy beam were utilized to drive the coalescence of residual nuclei via the secondary Bjerknes force was developed and validated. Results demonstrated 99.9% complete ablation of a 27-mL volume (equivalent to a sphere 3.7 cm in diameter) within 30 s.

In the second part of this dissertation, compensation methods for respiratory motion of abdominal organs during histotripsy treatment were investigated. Like HIFU, SBRT, and several imaging modalities, histotripsy is sensitive to the periodic respiratory motion of abdominal organs, which oscillate with up to 4 cm peak-to-trough amplitude and at up to 3 cm/s during normal respiration. Without compensation for respiratory motion there is an elevated risk of under-treating target-tissue, damaging adjacent healthy tissues and prolonging treatment. This part of the dissertation reviews existing methods for respiratory motion compensation, explores the feasibility of integrating these methods with histotripsy therapy, and presents a novel cavitation-based motion tracking technique. Using this technique, residual cavitation nuclei were coalesced into a small bubble-system and used as an in situ fiducial marker which was tracked throughout a predefined trajectory by a histotripsy therapy system capable of receiving acoustic backscatter signals. Results demonstrated the feasibility of receiving acoustic signals from this fiducial cavitation bubble cloud throughout a 16-cm trajectory with a mean error of 0.7 ± 0.3 mm.

In the final part of the dissertation, novel design and fabrication techniques were developed for a real-time-ultrasound-imaging guided, highly steerable phased array histotripsy transducer for liver ablation featuring arbitrarily shaped, densely, packed, and easily replaceable elements. High-powered transducers are the key enabling technology for histotripsy. Our lab has demonstrated the use of rapid prototyping methods for the fabrication of histotripsy arrays but these techniques have been limited to producing arrays with low packing density (~60%). The transducer design methods presented herein implemented a series of algorithms which analyzed human CT data to define the geometry of the array’s aperture, divided the aperture into discrete, nesting elements, and simulated the electronic focal steering range of this aperture as a function of the number of elements into which it was divided. Novel fabrication methods facilitated a very small gap (0.5 mm) between active piezoelectric material which resulted in a packing density >90%. The design of the array is presented, and the fabrication process and performance of individual elements are described. Simulation shows that this array is capable of electronically steering over a range sufficient to treat tissue-targets up to 3.6 cm in diameter in porcine or human subjects.

“Engineering science” courses are technical courses at the sophomore or junior level that are non-lab and non-design courses. While these courses make up a significant portion of students’ engineering education, they have received less research focus than design courses. In this talk we will present the beginnings of a framework capturing two overarching research questions: What should students learn in engineering science courses? And How should students learn in engineering science courses? We will then present two current research studies that each address these two questions. In the first we will describe the development of a coding scheme to characterize the degree to which instructors facilitate student sense-making in class and demonstrate how it is applied to question-initiated dialogue in two courses. In the second we will examine how students in one engineering science course solved and evaluated their answers for open-ended mathematical modeling problems.

Atomic Object Career Day (September 10, 2019 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/65944 65944-16676302@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 10, 2019 11:00am
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Engineering Career Resource Center

The ECRC is hosting a Career Day for Atomic Object on Tuesday, September 10, from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM in the Duderstadt Connector.

Career Day Description:
Become a Junior Developer at Atomic Object and do more with your first two years post-grad. You'll outpace your peers as you write production code in your first month, work side-by-side with industry veterans, and gain soft skills it will take others years to acquire. Atomic will also invest in your career through the Accelerator program.

WHAT'S THE ACCELERATOR?
The Atomic Accelerator is an accelerated professional development program for newly-graduated developers who join Atomic Object each spring.

WHY JOIN THE ACCELERATOR?

YOU'LL HIT THE GROUND RUNNING.
This is not a glorified internship. You'll join our team as a full-fledged Atom, with the same benefits, pay scale, and responsibilities as other Atoms—including working on real software projects for Atomic clients.

YOU'LL JOIN A TEAM WITHIN A TEAM.
Become part of the Accelerator team, a small group of new grads learning and working together. You'll also connect with the larger Atomic team and spend time with senior company leaders.

YOU'LL GET COACHED FOR SUCCESS.
Dive into a guided curriculum that will polish your consultant skills and teach you to make problem-solving software for our clients. You'll also get weekly coaching and feedback from experienced Atoms.

YOU'LL KEEP ON LEARNING.
Attend a development conference each year, plus local events and user groups. Atomic is serious about ongoing learning and contributing to the larger development community.

YOU'LL JUMP START YOUR CAREER.
Get ahead in your career by joining a consultancy, where you'll work directly with clients and use new platforms/languages every 4-6 months. You'll quickly gain a larger knowledge base and professional network than your friends at product companies.

YOU'LL BECOME AN ATOM.
Join a tight-knit group of makers working in an atmosphere of friendship, collaboration, and respect. Atomic is a transparent, employee-owned company that takes great care of its employees. We're also making the software community stronger, smarter, and more diverse.

HOW TO JOIN

REQUIREMENTS:
To qualify for the Accelerator, you must be:
Graduating with a Computer Science or related Bachelor's degree.
Willing to work from Atomic's Ann Arbor office.
Positive, curious, and ready to work hard and learn a lot.
A strong communicator.
Team-oriented—eager to work side-by-side with designers, clients, and other developers.

APPLICATION PROCESS:
To apply for the Atomic Accelerator, you'll need to participate in the Atomic Games (October 25 & 28). The Games are a programming competition for college students pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a related program.

For the Atomic Games, we’ve created an exciting turn-based game. We will provide the game and an artificial intelligence implementation for participants to play against. The game will coordinate moves between two AI engines, invoking an engine with the current game state and expecting the engine to return its next move in a reasonable amount of time. Participants will create an artificial intelligence algorithm, then face off against one another for the chance to win $500. During the Games, Atomic will be on the lookout for people to join our team in 2020 as full-time developers.

Procter & Gamble is the world’s largest non-food consumer goods company in the world. Our iconic brands (such as Tide, Swiffer, Crest, Olay and Gillette) are trusted in millions of homes every day and have been passed down from generation to generation. Over the course of 182 years, they’ve challenged convention, led innovation, and helped shape culture by combining “what’s needed” with “what’s possible”. Even with having over 20 brands that have more than one billion dollars each in net annual sales, our people are P&G’s most valuable asset. Much like our brands, we’re committed to finding and developing world-class leaders since leadership is one of our core values and an integral factor in our company’s success.

From early on, you’ll be at the core of breakthrough innovations, be given exciting assignments, lead initiatives, and take ownership and responsibility. And you’ll do this in creative work spaces where new ideas flourish. All the while, you’ll receive world-class training to help you become a leader in your field. And it’s not just about what you’ll do, but how you’ll feel: welcomed, valued, purposeful, challenged, heard, and inspired.

P&G invites students of all levels (Freshmen through PhD) to visit our Career Day booth to learn about exciting internship and full-time positions from U-M alumni that have tremendous passion about what they do and why. By visiting P&G’s Career Day booth, students will be able to discuss their career interests, share résumés, and learn about opportunities at Procter & Gamble in a relaxed setting before the Fall Career Fair. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without an employer-sponsored petition for a visa.

Rackham North: Intercultural Development Inventory Group Session (October 10, 2019 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/66123 66123-16688791@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 10, 2019 3:00pm
Location: Duderstadt Center
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is used in multiple ways in the Rackham PD DEI Certificate. Participants complete the IDI at the beginning and end of the certificate as an evaluation tool for the program. Once the IDI is completed for the first time, participants can join one of a number of group results sessions. This session focuses on the theoretical foundations of the IDI, gives a group result of PD DEI Certificate participants, and provides tools to better understand the continuum of mindsets individuals utilize as their strategy for navigating across difference.
Group session participants will leave with a fundamental understanding of multiple approaches to navigating across difference and will leave with resources they can use in their organizations, groups, or affiliations. This session also serves as the initial step before an individual results session where you receive your personal IDI result and an accompanying intercultural development plan to help you pursue your intercultural goals.
Please note: This session is intended for participants of Rackham’s Professional Development DEI Certificate Program.
This workshop is designed for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Space is limited. For faculty and staff, please contact RackhamEvents@umich.edu to see if we can accommodate your attendance.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/E35rv.
We want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time (one week preferred) to arrange for your requested accommodation(s) or an effective alternative.
