Organized By: Kelsey Museum of Archaeology

El Kurru has long been known to archaeologists as the location of a pyramid cemetery for the kings and queens of ancient Kush who conquered and ruled Egypt as its 25th Dynasty (ca. 750-650 BCE). A Kelsey Museum project begun there in 2013 aimed to investigate the wider area for remains of an ancient settlement whose existence was hinted at in the original excavator’s field notebooks. The results have been surprising and have opened up new possibilities both in research on ancient settlement in Kush and in working with local communities to understand and present its heritage.

In this talk, University of Michigan members of the archaeological team will present an overview of the last five field seasons.

Reception 5:30 PM, Lecture 6:00 PM.

Program Overview
Research about past cultures and societies through archaeology has been a part of the University of Michigan since its founding in 1817. And, so have museums as places for students and professors to engage with these cultures and societies. The exhibition Excavating Archaeology at the University of Michigan, 1817-2017, explores that history in the fields of archaeology and museums at the University of Michigan for the past 200 years. And, the exhibition looks forward to the future of archaeology and museums at Michigan in the coming century. The exhibition relies on carefully chosen objects, archival documents and images, and other illustrative materials to examine moments in the history of the University of Michigan’s involvements in archaeology and the location of archaeology in the University’s museum environment.

The tour will begin with a review of key terms and concepts to help participants enjoy a deeper understanding of the exhibition. It will conclude with a look through the permanent galleries of the Kelsey Museum.

The palace of Pylos constituted the largest regional economic center in southwestern Greece during the Bronze Age (16th- 12th centuries B.C.) with evidence for high levels of craft specialization, production, and control of towns in the surrounding areas, and for a strict political hierarchy. As the earliest constructed, longest lived, and best preserved Mycenaean palace, Pylos holds a unique position in Late Bronze Age archaeology with audience halls, archive rooms, stunning wall paintings, and thousands of Linear B tablets. The archaeological data from the cemeteries also sets it apart from the other palaces: Pylos is the only palace with cemeteries nearby that have been excavated using modern methods and are well-recorded. Yet, to date the vast richness of data available in the tombs has not been mined fully. Through a detailed examination of the tombs and their contents my study changes our understanding of how the Pylian state was formed; it elucidates how Pylos differed from other Mycenaean societies; it refines the complex relationship between Pylos and the greater Mediterranean world; and it demonstrates how the community manipulated funerary rituals to create social prestige and power.

In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled "Cosmogonic Tattoos," his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides, imaginatively transformed within our campus context, this project celebrates the power of architecture, ornament, and material objects to shape knowledge, historical memory, and cultural identity.

Portrait sculpture not only illustrated the artistic conventions of cultures throughout the ancient Mediterranean but also sent messages of the social, political, and religious roles of the people being portrayed.

Join Dr. Emily Mueller Epstein as she explores the results of her dissertation research within the context of pre-contact houses and households in the American Northwest. Archaeological excavation at four sites on Tse’tse’ede, “The Cold One” (Steens Mountain, Oregon) produced evidence for a subsistence and settlement system that likely supported a population of 100 or more. Material culture recovered in association with one house, various domestic surfaces, and from a high-elevation hunting locale revealed human use of the mountain spanning thousands of years (roughly 10,000 to 3,000 years ago). The excavated house joins the record of diverse Northern Great Basin house structures. Spatial analysis of recovered artifacts revealed specific activity areas at the site, and exotic artifacts suggest that households were connected to larger regional, social, and economic networks reaching into northern California and southwest Oregon.

Five Frankel Fellows, five objects, five short talks. Join us as fellows offer their interpretations of an object that they’ve personally selected from the Kelsey Museum Collections. Each artifact will join us at the talk, serving as an (ostensibly silent) interlocutor and prompt for the Fellows’ reflections about the relationships between Jews and material culture in the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.

Graduate students and faculty from Judaic Studies, Classics, and History are invited to register if they wish to handle artifacts from the Kelsey selection related to ancient Jews after the talks https://goo.gl/forms/pOa61T3l0jIg3PiU2

Participants:
Rick Bonnie, University of Helsinki
Deborah Forger, University of Michigan
Megan Nutzman, Old Dominion University

In celebration of the University’s Bicentennial in 2017, artist and professor Jim Cogswell has been invited by the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the University of Michigan Museum of Art to create a set of public window installations in response to the objects in their collections. Titled "Cosmogonic Tattoos," his project uses adhesive vinyl images applied in saturated colors to windows in the two buildings, highlighting the role of these museums in the life of our campus community. Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides, imaginatively transformed within our campus context, this project celebrates the power of architecture, ornament, and material objects to shape knowledge, historical memory, and cultural identity.

a graduate and undergraduate student symposium sponsored by the Collaborative
Archaeology Workgroup in conjunction with the bicentennial exhibition “Excavating
Archaeology at the University of Michigan, 1817-2017.” The symposium will be held at the
University of Michigan on December 8-9, 2017 with a keynote address by Lisa Çakmak
(Associate Curator of Ancient Art at Saint Louis Art Museum and IPCAA alumna).Museums and archaeology have had a long and complex history at the University of Michigan.
Beginning from a mandate to collect and preserve artifacts of ancient cultures, they have since
expanded to more involved and sometimes conflicting imperatives of exploring, excavating,
educating, interpreting, and intervening in today’s world. These missions have become
increasingly intertwined with issues of US and international politics, including: environmental
awareness and custodianship, cultural heritage and ownership, and the increasingly complex
uses and potentials of technology and information science.
As archaeology at the University of Michigan moves into its third century of existence, this wide-
ranging conference offers the opportunity to reflect on the past achievements as well as the
shortcomings of archaeological museums at the University of Michigan along with the research
currently being undertaken by our students and faculty both within the museums themselves
and out in the field. Finally, contributions concerning possible visions of the future of
archaeological museums, whether dealing with technology, display, or the objects and spaces
themselves, offers a glimpse into what the next century of archaeology at Michigan may look
like.
Graduate students from any field that interacts with archaeological materials and museums are
invited to give 10-15 minute papers, while undergraduates are invited to present posters based
on their current projects.  Suggested topics include, but are not limited to:
 The future role of archaeological museums
 Archaeological museums and local communities
 The present and future of technology and archaeology
 Connections between current fieldwork and museums
 The analysis and preservation of current archaeological collections
 Archaeological museums and the academic environment
 The history of Michigan archaeology
 The future of archaeological display
 Ethical concerns in the present and future of archaeological museums
Please submit a 300-word abstract for your paper or poster to cawofmichigan@umich.edu
by xxxxxxxx. For any further questions about the conference, topics, or presentations, please
contact either Matt Naglak (mnaglak@umich.edu) or Kimi Swisher (klswi@umich.edu

Through close examination of objects separated from us by deep chronological and cultural divides, imaginatively transformed within our campus context, this project celebrates the power of architecture, ornament, and material objects to shape knowledge, historical memory, and cultural identity.
