Join us for a viewing and discussion of Georges Méliès' groundbreaking 1902 film "A Trip to the Moon," based on the novel by Jules Vernes.

Matthew Solomon, associate professor of film, television and media at U-M, and a renowned authority on early silent films, in particular those of Méliès, will talk about the inspiration for and making of the film, its symbolism, and its impact on the history of cinema.  After the film and talk, the Observatory will be open for presentations related to lunar astronomy and, if weather permits, observing of the Moon using the historic 12.5" Fitz telescope.

Solomon is the editor of Fantastic Voyages of the Cinematic Imagination: Georges Méliès’s Trip to the Moon (SUNY Press) and the author of Disappearing Tricks: Silent Film, Houdini, and the New Magic of the Twentieth Century, winner of the Kraszna-Krausz award for best moving image book, of a monograph on Chaplin’s The Gold Rush for the BFI Film Classics series, and, most recently, of Méliès Boots: Footwear and Film Manufacturing in Second Industrial Revolution Paris (University of Michigan Press). He co-edits the “Cinema Cultures in Contact” book series for University of California Press and the “Out of the Archives” book series for University of Michigan Press.

Gozman will talk about galaxy mergers and how we can find evidence of past mergers in the outskirts of nearby galaxies. She will also present the results from a research project she worked on with Prof. Eric Bell in her first two years of UMich’s Astronomy PhD program.

The talk will be followed by tours of the Observatory and observing with the historic Fitz telescope, if weather permits.

Making Michigan: To put living force into the symbols: Journeys of Anatol Rapoport (September 29, 2022 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97630 97630-21794830@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 29, 2022 7:00pm
Location: Detroit Observatory

As a boy, Anatol Rapoport and his father succeeded in a daring escape from the Soviet Union. He went on to become a leading mathematical psychologist, semanticist and game theorist, making major contributions to the understanding of strategy, conflict, war, and peace -- always intent on tying strategic analysis to the conscientious appreciation of real human beings. As he wrote at one point, "One cannot play chess if one becomes aware of the pieces as living souls . . . ." Rapoport spent a significant portion of his variegated career at U-M, where among other things he helped found the Mental Health Research Institute and organize the first Teach-In, on the Vietnam War. Join us for an exploration of Anatol Rapoport's journeys -- personal and intellectual -- with three panelists: Shirli Kopelman, leading researcher, expert, and educator in the field of negotiations at the U-M Ross School of Business; Anthony Rapoport, son of Anatol and principal violist with Sinfonia Toronto and the Windermere Quartet; and Roger Rapoport, LSA '68, award-winning author and filmmaker and author of "A Professor's War for Peace."

This event will take place at the Detroit Observatory and will also be streamed online. Advance registration is required for either the in-person or virtual event.

Registration for the in-person event can be found here: https://myumi.ch/wM4XX

Discovering a Forgery: Jupiter's real moons and U-M's fake Galileo manuscript (October 6, 2022 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/98493 98493-21796718@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 6, 2022 7:00pm

In 1610, Galileo Galilei made a revolutionary discovery: moons orbiting Jupiter. One of the first astronomical discoveries made using a telescope, this event was critical to reshaping human understanding of the cosmos. Galileo drafted notes on his observations of the moons, for later publication in a work called the Sidereus Nuncius. In 1938, in a meeting that took place at U-M's Detroit Observatory, that draft was gifted to the University, becoming a treasured holding of the University Library. Or so everyone long believed. Now, thanks to the work of historian Nicholas Wilding, and the collaboration of U-M librarian Pablo Alvarez, the University's "Galileo Manuscript" has been exposed as a 20th-century forgery. Join us at the Detroit Observatory for discussion with Wilding and Alvarez of the purported significance of the manuscript, how its authenticity came to be questioned, and what went into the determination that it was a fake. The manuscript itself will be on display as part of this event, as will be the Library's copy of the first edition of Sidereus Nuncius. Following the panel, weather permitting, we will observe Jupiter and its Galilean moons using a telescope similar in size and power to the one Galileo used and using the historic 12.5" Fitz refracting telescope in the Observatory's dome.

Nick Wilding is professor of history at Georgia State University and a scholar of early modern Europe, history of science, and book forgery. Pablo Alvarez is curator in the Library's Special Collections Research Center and a specialist in pre-1700 manuscripts and printed books.

A Difficult Archive: Reckoning with the University of Michigan’s Complicity in the U.S. Colonization of the Philippines (October 13, 2022 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/99652 99652-21798506@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 13, 2022 7:00pm
Location: Detroit Observatory
Organized By: Bentley Historical Library

Join us for discussion with Professor de la Cruz about the historical relationship between the University of Michigan and the Philippines in the first decades of the American colonial period, out of which came some of the most extensive collections of Philippine material (historical, cultural, and natural scientific) in North America. Professor de la Cruz will introduce two collaborative projects by U of M faculty and students being carried out to recognize and repair the harm caused by these collections at all levels, including in their acquisition, representation, contextualization, stewardship, and use. The event will be followed by tours of the historic Detroit Observatory, with observing if weather permits.

Deirdre de la Cruz is Associate Professor of History and Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Michigan. She is an historian and cultural anthropologist of the Philippines, with an interest in the transformation of religious sensibilities, beliefs, and phenomena in modernity. She is the author of the book Mother Figured: Marian Apparitions and the Making of a Filipino Universal (University of Chicago Press, 2015), and several articles on religion in the Philippines. Her current projects include a scholarly book on the history of faith healing in the Philippines, an edited volume on religious diversity in the Philippines, and two plays, one on the legacies of Filipinos who fought in WWII, and another that tells the history of Christianity through the eyes of its apostates. In the last few years, Deirdre has turned her attention to the vast collections of Philippine materials at the University of Michigan and an exploration of related questions and concerns, including affect as archival object and archival method, translingualism in the imperial archives, and how to decenter the US in US empire studies.

On October 6, the Detroit Observatory will host a discussion of the discovery that the University's prized manuscript attributed to Galileo, which discusses his discovery of moons of Jupiter, is in fact a 20th-century forgery.  As a follow-up, join us on October 20 to learn more about the historical context of Galileo's astronomical accomplishments through a showing of the acclaimed documentary, The Moving Earth, by Danish film-maker Lars Becker-Larsen.  The Moving Earth (2009, 52 minutes, in English) recounts the history of early modern astronomy, focusing on five key figures: Tycho Brahe, Giordano Bruno, Johannes Kepler, Galileo Galilei, and Isaac Newton.  Weaving together historical vignettes and scientific explanations, the movie locates key scientific advances within the biographies of its subjects and the religious, social and political developments of the time.

Following the film, we will offer relevant exhibits and tours of the historic Detroit Observatory with astronomical observing if weather permits.  In particular, Jupiter and its Galilean moons will be in view!
