Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan

The Confucius Institute at U-M proudly presents “Majestic | Dream,” a solo exhibition by Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art at the Penny W. Stamps School of Arts and Design, University of Michigan. Professor Poskovic’s creative practice considers a range of technologies as a way to explore certain characteristics of printed image: translation, multiplicity, seriality. Through his works, Professor Poskovic seeks to construct representations that suggest broader themes of displacement, exile, memory and reconciliation. A frequent visitor to China, Endi Poskovic, Professor of Art at the University of Michigan Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design, is a great admirer of Chinese and Asian visual and material arts. Poskovic’s work in woodblock relief printmedia reflects his deep fascination and a lasting involvement with Chinese intellectual and creative communities. To celebrate this long and fruitful engagement as a bridge between artistic China and the University of Michigan, CIUM presents this exhibition.

Over the course of years, Poskovic has produced several major series of multi-plate color woodcut prints utilizing both established and non-traditional approaches frequently combining analog carving methods with laser engraving from bit-map data files. For this Confucius Institute sponsored exhibition, Poskovic presents an intimate selection of color woodcuts from two series of works, “Majestic” and “Dream”, focusing on landscape imagery informed by real and imaginary topographies, including several works which are based on his sketches drawn in China. Merging visual image with text, Poskovic’s “Majestic Series” shifts the reading of the woodcut by providing an unexpected new context and forcing the viewer to continually reinterpret. In “Dream Series”, Poskovic explores primitive strategies of early cinema to investigate personal and social histories, shifting cultural identities, environmental transformation, migration and alienation.

Endi Poskovic was educated in Yugoslavia, Norway, and the United States. His graphic works have been exhibited worldwide and have brought him many notable awards and honors, including grants and fellowships from the Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, the United States Fulbright Commission, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Norwegian Government, the Camargo Foundation, the Flemish Ministry of Culture, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Art Matters Foundation, among others. Museum collections which hold works by the artist include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Harvard University Fogg Art Museum, Detroit Institute of Arts, Jincheon Art Museum, South Korea and others.

FREE 4-Session Mindfulness Class (October 22, 2017 3:45pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/44658 44658-9945972@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, October 22, 2017 3:45pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Koru Mindfulness @ U-M

REGISTRATION OPEN FOR ALL STUDENTS!
Sundays from 3:45 - 5:00pm (9/24, 10/1, 10/8, 10/22)
@ Central Student Government Chambers (Michigan Union, 3rd Floor)

During this 4-session class you will be introduced to the practice of mindfulness and learn several skills, including meditation, for managing stress and enriching your life. Mindfulness is about developing the ability to be fully attentive to all the moments of your life, reducing the amount of time you spend worrying about the future or fretting about the past. An important aspect of mindfulness is developing a non-judgmental, accepting, even curious, attitude about your moment-to-moment experience. The more you develop this attitude, the less you will feel overwhelmed by changes and challenges in your life.

Koru is designed to introduce you to the practice of mindfulness and get you well on your way to developing this important skill. Like learning any new skill, it takes practice to get comfortable with mindfulness. We invite you to devote yourself to the study and practice of mindfulness over the next four weeks, and we challenge you to stay curious about what evolves for you as you persistently and patiently practice living mindfully. We also have a free mobile app to track meditation practices for this course!

Register today before the seats are filled!

For any questions, please contact Hitomi Katsumi at hkat@umich.edu.

Alas, here is a forum for graduate students to hear from their senior colleagues about challenges in their academic journeys and how they overcame them. We asked an interdisciplinary group of these busy people to devote two hours of their time to answering your questions. Join us to gain insight from their hindsight!

Mind-Body Awareness: Traditional Chinese Kung Fu Philosophy and Practice with Grandmaster Sam F.S. Chin (November 5, 2017 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/46017 46017-10353060@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, November 5, 2017 12:00pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Confucius Institute at the University of Michigan

Grandmaster Sam Chin will share with you his experience and how practicing the path of I Liq Chuan could help with daily activities such as your work and studies, as well as person living with physical disabilities specifically cerebral palsy.

Grandmaster Sam Chin was born in Malaysia and trained martial arts since childhood by his father – the founder of I Liq Chuan, Chin Lik Keong. During the 1980’s, GM° Sam Chin won numerous competitions, as well as the state heavy weight kickboxing championships of Malaysia, Selangor in 1978.

After he immigrated to the United States with his family in the early 1990’s, he then spent the next ten years working and teaching martial arts at the famous Chuang Yen Monastery in Carmel, New York. There, Master Sam F.S. Chin was exposed to numerous dharma and meditation masters. A breakthrough came about when he attended a dynamic mindfulness and awareness retreat taught by a well known Thailand monk – Ven. Achan Tong. Master Sam Chin developed the ability to observe the vicissitudes of the mind and physical body, realizing back to simplicity and the base of origin. This started his inquiry into the neutral path, which later became The Path of I Liq Chuan (pronounced Yi Leek Chi-uan), and eventually lead to the founding of Zhong Xin Dao in early 2016. With this penetrating clarity, he introduced Zen philosophy into his family art. Master Sam F.S. Chin began to distill unifying principles, further clarifying the essential body mechanics and sensory experiences, and their relationship to mental awareness.

In August 2009, at the age of 55 Grandmaster Sam F.S. Chin is officially named the Gate Keeper / Lineage Holder of the art by his father, founder of I Liq Chuan, Chin Lik Keong.

He was also recognized by the USA Wushu Kung-Fu Federation, an official member of the International Olympic Committee, as a Hall of Fame Outstanding Master.

In January 2016, China’s largest national television network CCTV aired a near 90 minutes documentary on Master Sam F.S. Chin and his family art. The documentary shows the scope of the I Liq Chuan’s invaluable teachings through Zhong Xin Dao philosophies of the neutral path, enhancing the lives of people living with blindness, physical handicaps, and the elderly.

Master Sam F.S. Chin passion shows through his teachings as he shares his family art selflessly for those seeking self-improvement. He created the grading system to ensure the art is transmitted transparently for years to come. There are now certified instructors and authorized group leaders in over 20 countries and credited courses in universities helping students learn how to learn.

He recently went to the South Pacific to search for the remains of Marines killed there during the battle of Tarawa. There they found the remains of many missing Marines including a Medal of Honor winner.

This event features Tania (Nguyen) LaViolet, PhD, senior program manager at Aspen Institute's College Excellence Program and the American Talent Initiative (ATI) and Dr. Bill Pink, president of Grand Rapids Community College.

According to indicators from the Beginning Postsecondary Student Survey, each year, there are approximately 51,000 lower-income, high-achieving community college students who do not transfer to a four-year institution. With an estimated 80% of community college students intending to transfer, researchers at Aspen and Ithaka S+R hosted over 25 research calls with two-year and four-year institutions to understand:

-The challenges four-year institutions face in enrolling and supporting community college students.
-What practices have been successful in cultivating relationships with community colleges to support enrollment, graduation, and holistic success of transfer students.

This work builds on The Transfer Playbook, which Aspen published last year in collaboration with the Community College Research Center. Dr. LaViolet will provide a preview of the upcoming ATI research publication, with a focus on supporting STEM bachelor’s attainment. President Pink will offer a local perspective on the challenges facing community college students in Michigan related to transfer and share thoughts on the experiences, preparation, and support necessary for successful STEM transfer to a four-year college.

This event is sponsored by the Growing STEM Knowledge Community.

Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Multi Ethnic Student Affairs - MESA

Join us in welcoming our keynote speaker, Matika Wilbur, for Native American Heritage Month! Matika Wilbur, an acclaimed photographer from the Tulalip and Swinomish tribes (Washington), is the creator and director of Project 562 and the only Native American photographer and social documentarian to be welcomed into each of the 562+ Native American sovereign territories in the United States. For the past four years, Wilbur has collaborated with scores of tribes to share the images and truths of Native American Peoples.

Join us for an evening of discussion as Wilbur presents "19 Lessons from Indian Roads"; providing remarkable insights into contemporary Native American life, driving the conversation forward to encourage U.S. citizens to evolve beyond the appropriation and neglect of indigenous images and traditions through a new model of awareness, with honest photographic representation and direct narratives of America's first people.

Wilbur says, "I believe the viewers will experience great understanding and connection with these remarkable people, just as they have enlightened and inspired me. By exposing the astonishing variety of the Indian presence and reality, we will build cultural bridges, abandon stereotypes, and renew and inspire our national legacy.”

This event is a part of Native American Heritage Month which is celebrated throughout the month of November. For a full list of events, please visit MESA's website.

Under air and ground cover from British and French forces, troops were slowly and methodically evacuated from the beach using every serviceable naval and civilian vessel that could be found. At the end of this heroic mission, 330,000 French, British, Belgian and Dutch soldiers were safely evacuated."

Karine Jean-Pierre speaks to the U-M campus MLK Day theme, The Fierce Urgency of Now. This theme calls us to claim ownership of the challenges we face and not leave it for future generations to address. Amidst technological advancements and increased global connections, much work still needs to be done to heal the wounds of our past, and resolve the injustices of our present. The Fierce Urgency of Now compels us to not only act but to also acknowledge that the absence of action and the continuation of silence, serves to bring us deeper into the shadows of division.

Jean-Pierre is a political campaign organizer, activist, political commentator, and lecturer in international and public affairs at Columbia University. She is the Senior Advisor and National Spokeswoman for MoveOn.org and is a Contributing Editor for Bustle. She has served as the Deputy Campaign Manager for both Barack Obama and Martin O’Malley presidential campaigns.

Sponsored by the University of Michigan Library, University Housing, School of Information, Law Library, and Bentley Historical Library.

Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Office of National Scholarships & Fellowships (ONSF)

Come learn about multiple opportunities for fully-funded graduate study in the UK. The session will discuss some of the most prestigious and famous scholarships in the world, including the Rhodes (Oxford), Gates Cambridge and Churchill (Cambridge), Marshall (any UK institution), and Mitchell (any Irish institution). However, we will also discuss UK Fulbrights and a number of institution-based scholarships (e.g. Clarendon Scholarships to Oxford).

Graduating seniors and students who want to learn more about these opportunities for the future are welcome to attend. The Rhodes, Gates Cambridge, and Marshall Scholarships in particular are among the most academically selective opportunities and require not only a >3.7 GPA, but also an extensive resume of engagement and leadership activities. Several of these scholarships require US citizenship, but others are available to international students as well.

Many of these opportunities require UM nomination. The UM deadline for Rhodes, Marshall, and Mitchell Scholarship is the fourth Monday of August. Check out the ONSF website for specific deadlines for other opportunities.

Join us for the reception and an informal talk by WANG Qingsong!

WANG Qingsong, one of China’s most highly regarded contemporary artists, will present an overview of his artistic works inspired by dramatic transformations that took place inside China in the last two decades. Addressing issues like real-estate development, massive consumption, education system failure, migration as well as globalization, Wang’s works present conflicts, contradictions, and contortions in an artistic and satirical ways.

About WANG Qingsong

An artist, educator, and curator, WANG Qingsong represents a generation of Chinese cultural producers and creative intellectuals who have exerted a profound influence on contemporary Chinese art practices. Wang’s large format photographic film works have been exhibited around the world at major museums, art centers, and galleries, playing a pivotal role in expanding the international art market for Chinese visual arts.

Formally trained as a painter, WANG Qingsong now works more like a film director who gathers dozens – sometimes even hundreds – of participants to produce improvisatory works that comment on consumerism, urbanization and social change. In 2014, Wang worked with University of Michigan faculty and students to create a large scale installation-photography work, one that has students perched along a thin stairway spanning the diagonal of a massive chalkboard, on which names of the top 500 institutions of higher education were written.

In winter 2018, Wang Qingsong will stage a new work that would stimulate comparative study of urban renewal efforts in China and the U.S. The work will feature photographic/film images of Detroit’s historical Chinatown and industrial-warehouses areas which have undergone urban renewal since the 1960s.
