Intra MENA/SWANA Hierarchy and the Impact of Terminology (March 8, 2018 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/49939 49939-11588699@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 8, 2018 6:00pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Multi Ethnic Student Affairs - MESA

This workshop is part of Arab Heritage Month at the University of Michigan.

How do the terms Arab, MENA (Middle Eastern and North African), SWANA (Southwest Asian and North African) either perpetuate or challenge intra-communal power dynamics? What marginalized communities and people do these terms uplift or erase? Join us for a workshop exploring the intersections of power and hierarchy in SWANA and/or Arab communities, and the possibilities of intra-SWANA solidarity and coalition-building on campus.

Please direct all inquiries to Zanib Sarieni (zsareini@umich.edu) in the Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs

Organized By: Ginsberg Center

Update as of 3/12/18: due to inclement weather Mariame had to cancel her visit to our campus. We will be in touch if we are able to reschedule her visit.

The election of Donald Trump has catalyzed historic levels of activism around the country. The Women’s March on the day after the inauguration in 2017 is considered to be the largest single day demonstration ever. However, students have been organizing in large numbers, notably after the killing of Trayvon Martin, which catalyzed the Black Lives Matter movement.

In this workshop, educator and organizer Mariame Kaba will illuminate the long history of activism for change, especially those with youth at the center. She will draw from recent examples of students engaging and creating social change, as well as her own history of organizing, to illuminate the pitfalls and promises of this current moment. This session will highlight how educators can effectively support and challenge students engaged in activism.

*This event is for Faculty and Staff. See MHappenings for Graduate Student session.

The first lecture, titled “The Materialist Conception of History”, will review the development of historical materialism with an emphasis on its contemporary relevance.

Topics covered in this lecture:

• What is historical materialism
• Materialism vs. Idealism
• From Kant to Hegel to Marx
• The post-modernist attack on materialism

What is Socialism? – IYSSE 2018 Lecture Series:

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx, the originator of the materialist conception of history, the author of Das Kapital and, with Friedrich Engels, the founder of the modern revolutionary socialist movement.

Two hundred years after Marx’s birth, there is growing interest in socialism all over the world. Workers and young people confront unprecedented levels of social inequality, unending war and the threat of dictatorship. Millions are looking for an alternative and are asking the question: What is socialism?

This series of lectures will review the theory of Karl Marx and its enduring contemporary relevance.

Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Prison Creative Arts Project, The

In a collaboration with California Lawyers for the Arts, Shakespeare Behind Bars, and Creative Many that is funded by the Art for Justice Fund, we are hosting the Michigan Art for Justice Forum. This all day symposium will bring together lawmakers, artists, scholars, justice advocates and formerly-incarcerated people to imagine how the arts can contribute to reforming the criminal justice system. This event is part of a series of six public policy forums happening in 2018 in Michigan, Texas, Alabama, Georgia, New York and California. Reception to follow at 5:30 PM in the Duderstadt Center Gallery.

“Prison does not define who we are as people, but instead reflects poor decisions we have made. I would ask that those who judge us to perhaps look past the blue and orange state clothes we wear, and to try to practice empathy. Please try to understand us. Please try to look past our imperfections and most importantly, try to forgive us. I believe that many inmates struggle with, yet desperately desire to express who they truly are, and the reasons are numerous. Creating art is one avenue I personally use to express myself. All of my paintings reflect either my sadness, my happiness, my dreams, my desires, my passions, or I just find them beautiful. Whatever painting of mine you may be looking at right now, please know that while you are certainly seeing a part of me, there is far more to understand and discover about me beyond the blue and orange I wear." This year's theme is "Breaking Barriers". The Men of Color Symposium focuses on cross-cultural learning, identity development, community building, skill development, and wellness for self-identified men of color. The symposium will include keynote speakers and interactive dialogic base concurrent sessions. The sessions and speakers will create opportunities for men of color to learn from each other, build community, as well as to develop academically, personally, and professionally.

All are welcome to attend. A continental breakfast and lunch will be provided. Register below. While you will be able to register onsite pre-registration helps us to plan to make the symposium as impactful as possible. We also have limited space for the conference and concurrent sessions. The earlier you register the greater choice of concurrent sessions you will have.

Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: International Youth and Students for Social Equality

On April 11 the IYSSE at University of Michigan will host its second lecture in the three-part educational series: What Is Socialism?

This lecture titled “Marxist Political Economy” will review the development of a scientific understanding of capitalism by Karl Marx.

Topics covered in this lecture:

• The labor theory of value
• Profit and exploitation
• The fetishism of commodities
• Financialization and globalization

I propose that the underlying etiology of population health disparities are causally linked through individual chronic stressor exposures, unhealthy coping behaviors, and the stress response network and related biological systems over the individual life-course. An extension of this framework questions the static categorization of race; instead arguing that race is a complex construct that in adulthood represents a broad set of life experiences that cannot be arrayed along a simple demographic/social dimension assigned at birth. I suggest instead that all individuals are racialized through their lived experiences over the life-course, within a particular culture, during unique periods of historical time.
