Michael S. Roth — historian, curator, author, and public advocate for liberal education — is the 16th president of Wesleyan University and former president of California College of the Arts. He is the author of six books, including Beyond the University: Why Liberal Education Matters (Yale University Press, 2014), winner of AAC&U’s 2016 Frederic W. Ness Book Award, which recognizes outstanding contributions to the understanding and improvement of liberal education. President Roth’s newest book is Safe Enough Spaces: A Pragmatist’s Approach to Inclusion, Free Speech, and Political Correctness (Yale University Press, 2019), which addresses some of the most contentious issues in higher education in the US, including affirmative action, safe spaces, and questions of free speech.

This event is part of the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) Research and Scholarship Seminar Series, which features scholars who advance our understanding of historical and contemporary social issues related to identity, difference, culture, representation, power, oppression, and inequality.

The series also highlights how research and scholarship can address current and contemporary social issues.

Organized By: School of Information

The School of Information presents a lecture and panel discussion with R. Stanton Jones, a Michigan alum and Washington attorney whose firm has played a central role in litigating social justice cases related to immigration detention, gerrymandering and voter I.D. laws.

This includes high profile cases such as the Department of Commerce v. New York, which brought into question the legality of adding citizenship status to the U.S. census. After “smoking gun” evidence was uncovered and publicized, this case generated a high volume of social media interest. Prominent commentators have credited the enormous media attention and the accompanying public outrage/outcry with turning the outcome of the case.

Ann Arbor District Library Director Josie Parker will moderate a panel discussion with Jones and Professor Christian Sandvig, U-M School of Information and Department of Communication Studies, and Ann Lin, Associate Professor of Public Policy in the Ford School

This event is funded by the William Warner Bishop and Martha Boaz Lectureships.

BLI Speaker Series: Compassionate Leadership: Creating a Just, Inclusive, and Mindful Society (February 20, 2020 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71327 71327-17817095@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 20, 2020 5:00pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Barger Leadership Institute

Globally, nationally, locally—it is not hard to see that the world needs more compassionate leadership. But how do we do it? We are all leaders, and can learn to be more compassionate! Leading with compassion requires us to be aware of both the unique contributions of each person as well as what we all share as humans. Compassion goes beyond empathy to move us to relieve and prevent the suffering of others. Compassionate leaders inspire and energize others, attract collaboration and creativity, increase trust, make wiser choices. They cultivate the awareness, justice, inclusivity, and kindness we need to guide our actions as a society.

This evening will address the meaning and importance of compassionate leadership in the year 2020 and lead short but effective practices in developing these capacities.

Mirabai Bush is a Senior Fellow of the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society and served as Executive Director until 2008. Sustainability (environmental, social & governance values) is not 'a thing' but 'the way we do things'. It is about mainstreaming sustainability. To communicate this we will be talking about integration of sustainability metrics and values at three levels of implementation:
1. Within the fence of an organization: How are sustainable principles implemented at the unit level?
2. Outside the fence of the organization: How are sustainability principles implemented across supply chains?
3. Conditioning capital investment in sustainability: What is sustainable capital, how is capital deployment impacted by sustainability metrics?

CANCELED: Whose Freedom of Speech?: Reflections on Power and Voice on the American College Campus (March 20, 2020 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/73494 73494-18261070@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 20, 2020 1:00pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: The Program on Intergroup Relations (IGR)

THIS EVENT IS CANCELED.

In this talk, Elizabeth Cole considers how a psychological understanding of power and voice are missing from current national conversations on free speech. Cole argues this omission constitutes a "missing discourse" (Fine, 1988). Cole will discuss the ways that research on social norms, gendered self-silencing, stigma, and activism complicate questions of whether to speak, who gets the floor to speak, and whose speech is considered legitimate by listeners. Intergroup dialogue pedagogy will be proposed as a remedy that holds promise, but also entails important caveats. Cole concludes with a discussion of the implications of power and voice for debates about diversity, inclusion, and free speech on college campuses. After Cole's lecture, she will open discussion for Q&A.

Elizabeth Cole is a Professor of Women’s Studies, Psychology, and Afroamerican & African Studies at the University of Michigan. She earned her doctorate at the University of Michigan in Personality Psychology and taught at Northeastern University before joining UM in 2000.

Light refreshments will be served during the event.

The Center for Inequality Dynamics (CID) was founded at the Institute for Social Research (ISR) in 2019 as a partnership between ISR, the Institute’s Survey Research Center, and the University of Michigan’s College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. The center pursues cutting-edge research and innovative teaching on one of the central societal challenges of our time: social inequality.

Join us for our inaugural lecture as we talk to Thomas Piketty about his new book, Capital and Ideology. In this book, Piketty challenges us to revolutionize how we think about politics, ideology, and history. He exposes the ideas that have sustained inequality for the past millennium, presents a scathing critique of contemporary politics, and outlines a bold proposal for a new and fairer economic system.

We will have a panel discussion with Elizabeth Anderson, John Dewey Distinguished University Professor, and Fabian Pfeffer, Director of the Center for Inequality Dynamics, with a reception to follow where Mr. Piketty will be signing books.

The Middle Eastern/North African Student (ME/NA) Celebration is the celebratory program that highlights ME/NA graduates at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint at the conclusion of every academic year. The ceremony was born out of a need to recognize the large population of previously unrecognized Middle Eastern/North African student graduates. The mission of the program is to recognize them, their achievements, and the cultural significance of the ME/NA community, while providing incentive to future students to reach the ultimate goal of graduation.

On this day, join us as we come together to celebrate the accomplishments of our graduating seniors, as well as show respect to everyone who helped them make this possible, including friends, faculty, staff, administrators, and family members.

To register for ME/NA 2020 and request additional tickets, complete an application at umichoami.fluidreview.com
