Trump, Twitter and Fake News: How Journalists Can Build Credibility by Opening Up Their Work (October 26, 2017 2:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/44737 44737-9969046@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 26, 2017 2:30pm

Event will be live webstreamed at https://wallacehouse.umich.edu/?p=8583.

How should the press adapt when those in power use the epithet “fake news” to attack real reporting? Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter, David Fahrenthold of The Washington Post, offers suggestions for both reporters and news consumers on navigating this new era. He will discuss how journalists can open up their own reporting process through social media, show the public the work that underlies their stories and invite readers in as collaborators.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Fahrenthold used social media to follow-up on Donald Trump’s pledge to donate money to veterans groups. Posting his reporter’s notes on Twitter to solicit leads, Fahrenthold uncovered Trump’s questionable charitable practices and found no evidence that Trump donated money to veterans groups as he’d claimed. Fahrenthold was also the first reporter to reveal the existence of the “Access Hollywood” 2005 video in which Trump bragged about groping women. For his series of stories, Fahrenthold won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for national reporting.

A graduate of Harvard, Fahrenthold has been at The Washington Post since 2000. There he reports on President Trump’s businesses and conflicts of interest. He previously covered the Washington, D.C., police, the environment, New England, Congress and the federal bureaucracy for the paper.

From the speaker's bio:

Ana Navarro is a well-known Republican strategist and a political analyst for CNN and CNN en Español. She is also a political contributor on ABC’s The View. The Miami New Times named her a “Republican power-consultant,” and the Tampa Bay Times called her “a sought-after voice in Republican politics and an adviser for any presidential hopeful,” saying, “with confidants Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio she is poised to play a big role in the GOP response to immigration reform and Hispanic outreach.” Respected on both sides of the aisle for her straight shooting and candor, Navarro frequently appears in the media, sought after by Meet the Press, Bill Maher’s Real Time, Anderson Cooper 360, and The View, to name a few. “Ana speaks the truth, and she is willing to speak the truth to power without reservation…She has the ear of lots of elected officials,” said Republican consultant Brett O’Donnell. She is in touch with the political issues people are talking about, and in presentations, she discusses the latest hot button issues in politics, giving audiences an insider’s view of the upcoming elections and a roadmap for where the country is headed.

Tutu 《涂图》was choreographed for a pure physical dance work and developed from its unique dance language and principles of movement. It deconstructs the way the body moves, using “release” techniques and four-dimensional spatial recognition to continually explore and investigate how physical movement is influenced by time and space.

About Hou Ying (Choreographer)

Hou Ying is a pioneer of Chinese contemporary dance. Her Spirit of Night and Kiss and subsequent works earned international attention. In 2001, she came to the US supported by the Asian Cultural Fund, and in the following year, she joined the New York’s Shen Wei Dance Arts Dance Company, where she promptly became an influential dancer in the group. Winning critical acclaim, Hou Ying’s choreographic works have been performed in more than ten countries. Critics have described her work as “consisting of whimsical and lonely compositions that explore people’s inner spirit through bodily motion.”

About Hou Ying Dance Theater

Hou Ying Dance Theater was established in 2009. Its predecessor Horizon Dance Theater was founded by Hou Ying in 2006 in New York. After training and performing in New York, Hou Ying returned to China as Director of the 2008 Olympic Games show The Picture. After the Olympics, Horizon Dance Theater’s creative focus moved to Beijing, where it was officially renamed Hou Ying Dance Theater. Hou Ying Dance Theater gives unique art-styled works to audiences with uncompromising attitude. Its representative works include Night of the Spirit (1996)/ Kiss (1998)/ TuTu (2009)/ Interface (2011)/ Interface2 (2012)/ Infinity (2013)/ The Moment(2015), and so on.

ComCo is Michigan's oldest and moodiest Improv Troupe. We were originally a sketch comedy group, but in the 1990s, we brought Andy Dick on campus to do standup and he made everyone very angry; we lost all of our funding and transitioned out of necessity to pure improv. We thank Mr Dick very much for this, he made us what we are. Our final show of the year is April 17th at 8pm in the Lydia Mendelssohn theater. We hope to see you all there!
