From the speaker's bio:

Ana Navarro is a well-known Republican strategist and a political analyst for CNN and CNN en Español. She is also a political contributor on ABC’s The View. The Miami New Times named her a “Republican power-consultant,” and the Tampa Bay Times called her “a sought-after voice in Republican politics and an adviser for any presidential hopeful,” saying, “with confidants Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio she is poised to play a big role in the GOP response to immigration reform and Hispanic outreach.” Respected on both sides of the aisle for her straight shooting and candor, Navarro frequently appears in the media, sought after by Meet the Press, Bill Maher’s Real Time, Anderson Cooper 360, and The View, to name a few. “Ana speaks the truth, and she is willing to speak the truth to power without reservation…She has the ear of lots of elected officials,” said Republican consultant Brett O’Donnell. She is in touch with the political issues people are talking about, and in presentations, she discusses the latest hot button issues in politics, giving audiences an insider’s view of the upcoming elections and a roadmap for where the country is headed.

Tutu 《涂图》was choreographed for a pure physical dance work and developed from its unique dance language and principles of movement. It deconstructs the way the body moves, using “release” techniques and four-dimensional spatial recognition to continually explore and investigate how physical movement is influenced by time and space.

About Hou Ying (Choreographer)

Hou Ying is a pioneer of Chinese contemporary dance. Her Spirit of Night and Kiss and subsequent works earned international attention. In 2001, she came to the US supported by the Asian Cultural Fund, and in the following year, she joined the New York’s Shen Wei Dance Arts Dance Company, where she promptly became an influential dancer in the group. Winning critical acclaim, Hou Ying’s choreographic works have been performed in more than ten countries. Critics have described her work as “consisting of whimsical and lonely compositions that explore people’s inner spirit through bodily motion.”

About Hou Ying Dance Theater

After training and performing in New York, Hou Ying returned to China as Director of the 2008 Olympic Games show The Picture. ComCo is Michigan's oldest and moodiest Improv Troupe. We were originally a sketch comedy group, but in the 1990s, we brought Andy Dick on campus to do standup and he made everyone very angry; we lost all of our funding and transitioned out of necessity to pure improv. We thank Mr Dick very much for this, he made us what we are. Our final show of the year is April 17th at 8pm in the Lydia Mendelssohn theater. We hope to see you all there!

Organized By: University of Michigan Helen Zell Writers' Program

Reading and Lecture: Professor Viet Thanh Nguyen, winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, will visit the University of Michigan on Tuesday, September 11, 2018, to deliver a lecture on the topic of "Race, War, and Refugees.” He will discuss and read from the four books that he has written in the last four years: The Sympathizer; Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War; The Refugees; and The Displaced: Refugee Writers on Refugee Lives, all of which will be available for purchase at the book-signing that follows the lecture.

The anniversary of 9/11 provides the ideal occasion for Professor Nguyen to speak on these issues that are at the forefront of public consciousness. With the nation in the midst of a harsh and divisive debate about borders and migration, Professor Nguyen provides a unique and insightful perspective to promote tolerance, empathy, and forward-looking solutions. His lecture will fuse together elements of his creative writing, autobiographical reflection, and scholarly criticism.

About the Speaker: Viet Thanh Nguyen’s novel The Sympathizer is a New York Times best seller and won the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. Other honors include the Dayton Literary Peace Prize, the Edgar Award for Best First Novel from the Mystery Writers of America, the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction from the American Library Association, the First Novel Prize from the Center for Fiction, a Gold Medal in First Fiction from the California Book Awards, and the Asian/Pacific American Literature Award from the Asian/Pacific American Librarian Association. His other books are Nothing Ever Dies: Vietnam and the Memory of War (a finalist for the National Book Award in nonfiction and the National Book Critics Circle Award in General Nonfiction) and Race and Resistance: Literature and Politics in Asian America. He is University Professor, Aerol Arnold Chair of English, and Professor of English, American Studies and Ethnicity, and Comparative Literature at the University of Southern California. He has been interviewed by Tavis Smiley, Charlie Rose, Seth Meyers, and Terry Gross, among many others. His current book is the bestselling short story collection, The Refugees. Most recently he has been the recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim and MacArthur Foundations, and le Prix du meilleur livre étranger (Best Foreign Book in France), for The Sympathizer. He is a critic-at-large for the Los Angeles Times and a contributing opinion writer for the New York Times. https://vietnguyen.info/

Zhou Family Band attracted international attention through their first Europe tour in 2017, which brought them to five countries and prestigious festivals such as World of Music, Arts and Dance festival (WOMAD).
