Yandong Grand Singers (September 24, 2019 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/64719 64719-16434925@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 24, 2019 7:30pm
Location: Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre
Organized By: Center for World Performance Studies

Center for World Performance Studies and Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies present the Yandong Grand Singers at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre on September 24, 2019 at 7:30pm. In bright voices and natural harmonies shaped by the unique environment of the area, the Dong people of Guizhou, China sing about nature, romantic love, history and moral values. For the Dong people, Grand Song is an indispensable part of life, just as their saying goes, “rice feeds the body–but songs feed the soul”. The Dong people transmit much of their history, culture and knowledge through songs that accompany them throughout their lives. Choirs of children, young and senior people are formed in every village, representing a crucial symbol of Dong ethnic identity and cultural heritage.

The Yandong Grand Singers is a choir formed by farmers from Yandong Village, specializing in the “Grand Song” of the Dong people - polyphonic music known to the world only in recent decades. The repertoire includes a range of genres such as ballads, children’s songs, songs of greeting and imitative songs that test performers’ virtuosity at mimicking the sounds of animals. Taught by masters to choirs of disciples, Grand Songs are performed formally in the drum-tower, the landmark venue for rituals, entertainment and meetings in a Dong village, or more spontaneously in homes or public places. In 2009, the Dong musical tradition was listed by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage in China. This will mark the group’s first full US tour, having previously appeared at Carnegie Hall China Festival and the International International Festival for Vocal Music in Leipzig, Germany.

CWPS events are free and open to the public. Visit www.lsa.umich.edu/world-performance for more info. Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance (October 10, 2019 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/63545 63545-15784069@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 10, 2019 7:30pm

Young Frederic, who has spent his formative years as a junior pirate, plans to mark his 21st birthday by breaking free from the Pirate King and beginning his courtship of Mabel. But because he was born in a Leap Year, Frederic isn’t technically 21– and the Pirate King is still his master. Unless something gives, Frederic will soon be on a collision course with the Pirate King’s new nemesis: Mabel’s father.

This updated version of the original D’Oyly Carte production marries the wit of British Music Hall and the American show-biz know-how of a combustive Broadway musical; including dance, visual gags, and many well-loved songs such as “I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General,” “Poor Wand’ring One,” and “A Policeman’s Lot is Not a Happy One.” The Pirates of Penzance is the quintessence of silly, a delightful excuse to indulge in the literate humor of Gilbert’s libretto, the enchanting melodies of Arthur Sullivan’s score, and the powerhouse talents of our Musical Theatre students.

Organized By: Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA)

For the past 10 years, the Michigan Malaysian Students' Association (MiMSA) has come together to prepare for one special night every year: the Malaysian Cultural Night.
Free for all, people of all ages are welcome to spend their evening with a musical that delves into Malaysian art, culture and racial dynamics. Guests are also invited for a free dinner with some good Malaysian company after the show. This year, we present Kita.

Kita (Us)

Malaysian Cultural Night 2020 will follow the story of 4 Malaysian students who transferred to the University of Michigan, each with their unique background stories. The light hearted play will showcase unity among ethnically diverse people, and most importantly, the significance of true friendship. The characters will embody individuals that struggle with family expectations, finding their identities away from home, making friends all whilst adapting to a new culture in a new country. This play is highly relatable to students who are studying abroad, and it aims to realize the experience as well as to educate the non-Malaysian audience on our identity. MCN 2020 will also showcase a variety of traditional dances from different ethnic groups in Malaysia.

By Frederico García Lorca
Translated by Jo Clifford
Directed by Malcolm Tulip

Written by Frederico García Lorca, considered to be Spain’s greatest poet of the twentieth century, Yerma is the tragic story of a woman living in rural Spain who is immersed in the constant pressure to have children. Her husband of two years, Juan, whom she married to please her father and not for love, has been unable to give her the child she desires. Tormented, Yerma seeks advice from an older woman in the town who tells her of a pilgrimage many barren young women take to help them get pregnant. A provoking and heart-rending story, Yerma lays bare society’s expectations through one woman’s struggles between honor and conformity, passion, and duty.

an operetta by Johann Strauss II
Directed by Grant Preisser, University Opera Theatre
Conducted by Kirk Severtson, University Philharmonia Orchestra

Scheming and devious plans run amuck to culminate in a hilarious comeuppance in this re-imagined, gender-bent take on Strauss's light-hearted comedy filled with lush Viennese waltzes. Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome to ... The Fledermaus--Berlin’s hottest cabaret! It’s New Year’s Eve 1932, and Orlofsky’s club is preparing for its annual blow-out celebration. However, more is afoot this year than usual as Orlofsky and Rosalinde, the headline singer of the cabaret, scheme to out Rosalinde’s playboy and apparently bi-sexual husband, Gabriel von Eisenstein. With the aid of Eisenstein’s friend Dr. Falke, Rosalinde feigns an illness, clearing the path for Eisenstein to attend the party and indulge in his proclivities without his wife present. Unbeknownst to Eisenstein, Rosalinde does, in fact, attend-in full male drag-with the aim to seduce her husband and confirm the rumors of his broadening predilections. Of course, things never go quite as planned, and as the party rages on, champagne flows, secrets are revealed, and disguises come off, leading to a lesson for some and a happy reconciliation for all.

Full of pranks, disguises, and overall merriment, Die Fledermaus is Johann Strauss II’s most loved operetta, featuring the Hungarian “Csardas,” and Orlofsky’s “Toast to Champagne.” This updated take explores themes of sexuality and gender identification, as present in the 1930s as they are today. This production will be sung in German with dialogue in English and German and projected English translations.

The University of Michigan Gilbert & Sullivan Society invites you to come aboard the H.M.S Pinafore for a performance filled with comedy and social satire! The story takes place aboard the ship, H.M.S. Pinafore, where class differences jeopardize the love between the captain's daughter, Josephine, and the lowly sailor, Ralph Rackstraw. The captain would rather his daughter marry the important (and self important) Sir Joseph, the First Lord of the Admiralty. Can love level ranks or are there more surprises in store?

Makoto Takata directs a cast from the University of Michigan and the wider southeastern Michigan community, including Adam Chase, Alexis Pratt, David Andrews, Heather Nordenbrock, Lee Vahlsing, and Don Regan.

Tickets available at https://rebrand.ly/pinafore

Group sales for 10+ available with discount code PINAFOREGROUP.
Students must show ID upon pickup.
FUMGASS special access begins on 2/24/20 (call, visit, or check out MUTO online!)
