‘H’ Patten teaches the Korotech style of dance, which draws on Jamaican dancehall, Jamaican African/neo-African practices, and West and Central African dance techniques. Focusing on isolation, undulation, and pulsation, this fun yet demanding class will cover movement vocabulary from across the spectrum of African and Caribbean dance. Participants will learn dance vocabulary from the Korotech style and develop movement from drum utterances (drum talk) through this creative process. Patten is the artistic director of Koromanti Arts and ‘H’ Patten Dance Theatre Co. An experienced choreographer, filmmaker, visual artist, storyteller, author, and performer, he has developed an international reputation in African and Caribbean arts over the past 35 years. Patten has choreographed for the Ghanaian, Nigerian, Sierra Leonean, Malawian, and Zambian national dance companies, the Stella Maris Dance Ensemble in Jamaica, and many other high profile and distinguished productions. He has also taught at the Edna Manley School of Dance, Eduardo Rivera’s Compania Teatro Dela Danza Del Caribe de Santiago, Cuba, and L’Ecole des Sables, Senegal as well as teaching the cast of The Lion King (London).

The Ancestral Healing Movement Workshop is an experience that requires participants to use imagination and movement to heal past trauma and embrace resilience. During this process, students should be prepared to experience all emotions that come up for them and will leverage movement to release feelings or experiences that no longer serve them. This class requires all senses and in some cases speech to take up space in the room figuratively and physically. Using epigenetics to understand and movement as medicine to heal, the goal is to physically release trauma that is pinned up in the body and embrace generational resilience for a brighter future.

Saenz's residency at U-M also includes a screening of the film "The Process of Remembering" on Friday, Oct. 4th at 6:30 pm in the Betty Pease Studio Theater within the University of Michigan Department of Dance.

"The Process of Remembering" is a short film by Alexis Saenz about remembering, learning and understanding her identity in this world. Eight versions of Saenz entwine together in the film, showing stages she has moved through to get to the present. This film took one year to create and was a collaboration with 34 different artists. The event includes a screening of the 13-minute film, and immersive live performance that stems from the work, a photo series accompanying the film, and a Q&A seminar to follow.

Since creating "The Process of Remembering", Saenz comments on having continued to realize and learn more and more from the process. She states, "I hope that people watching the film will be inspired to remember who they are and continue going through their processes with fortitude. As long as I am breathing and the Creator continues to challenge me in this life I will continue to overcome, I will speak my truth, seek the truth and heal through my art. We all must."

The Process of Remembering Tour includes different elements, including portions of a workshop entitled 'Mi Vida Su Vida' ( https://indigenousyouth.org/voices/mi-vida-su-vida-health-education), aimed at dismantling belief systems and developing tools for better understanding of oneself and the healing process. Saenz states: "My hopes for each city are to learn about the importance of mind, body, spirit connection and self-love."

Choreographers Mauriah Kraker and Leah Wilks will perform their acclaimed duet Armageddon or Sunrise or Something, an hour long endurance-driven event that asks questions about place, boundary, sensuality, care, and exhaustion. Pulling from the duo’s different training histories in improvisation, Olympic-level sport, ballet, modern dance technique, photography, and sound design, the piece functions as both a grief ritual and a space for reckoning with limitation.

This performance is part of the Art in the Anthropocene: An Interdisciplinary Symposium on Performance, Technology, and Ecology taking place Monday, October 21 through Saturday, October 26. This interdisciplinary symposium will bring together artists and scholars across the fields of dance, art and design, science and technology studies, and women’s studies who are currently working at the intersections of performance, art, and ecology. Through workshops, performances, and open panels participants will be examining the relationship between the arts and sciences during what is commonly referred to as ‘The Anthropocene,” meaning the current epoch in which human impact on earthly geography is undeniable and irreversible. In this evening performance, artist-scholars Michael J. Morris and Charli Brissey will present two current performance projects, Elemental Rites at the End of the World and Agua Viva: Choreographies of Water. Morris works with ritual structures for shifting consciousness, connecting to our embodiment of air/fire/water/earth, devising spontaneous rituals for healing and addressing political harm, incorporating astrology and tarot as movement scores, and creating dances as spells. Their performances and scholarship address the figure of the witch as a site of resistance to imperialist, colonialist, white supremacist, capitalist, heteropatriarchy. Brissey will share an iteration of their current multi-year research project, which turns to the oceans, natural water systems, and the deep-sea floor as potentially radical sites for imagining new futures in ecologically precarious times. Emerging through performance, video, sound design, and experimental writing, this project questions what gets identified as “technology” and the social, political, and ecological consequences of engaging with these systems and infrastructures.
