Women create only 3% of tech startups, receive less than 10% of venture capital funding and run only 4% of Fortune 500 companies.

"The time is long overdue to encourage more women to dream the impossible dream." -Sheryl Sandberg

She Started It follows five young women over two years as they pitch VCs, build teams, bring products to market, fail and start again.

The documentary takes viewers on a global roller coaster ride from San Francisco to Mississippi, France and Vietnam. Along the way, it weaves in big-picture perspectives from women like investor Joanne Wilson; White House CTO Megan Smith; GoldieBlox CEO Debbie Sterling; and Ruchi Sanghvi, the first female engineer at Facebook.

Help us inspire the next generation to dream bigger, and urge today’s generation to support women entrepreneurs.

Note: These talks are open to the community as space permits.

About Richard Lui:

Nonpartisan Reporting Spanning 25 Years
Richard Lui's career in politics and political news spans 25 years, including news anchor for MSNBC, NBC News and CNN Worldwide. In 2007 he became the first Asian American male to anchor a daily national news broadcast in America. Most recently, Lui reported on the ground on the Paris and San Bernardino Terror Attacks and in Ferguson and Baltimore during heightened racial unrest. He's received Emmy and Peabody awards and the Champion in Media Award at the Multicultural Media Correspondents Dinner Award at the National Press Club.

Launched 6 Tech Brands over 3 Business Cycles
Business Insider named Lui one of 21 careers to watch alongside Warren Buffett and Sheryl Sandberg. Over the course of 30 years, Lui has launched six techbology brands over three business cycles, most recently with an artifiical intelligence company in Silicon Valley. After MBA at Michigan Ross School of Business, he joined Citibank where he co-created a fintech payment model he holds a patent for. He was a management consultant at Mercer for an IBM joint venture. Lui sits on four boards of directors / advisers in spaces ranging from international relations to artificial intelligence.

Top 1% WSB Speaker, over 500 Events
Lui is ranked in the top 1% of subject matter experts of Washington Speakers Bureau speakers. Lui was awarded Civil Rights awards, including the National Education Association's Human and Civil Rights Award, Asian American Jounalists Association's Civil Rights Award, and the Asian Americans Advancing Justice Courage Award. He is also ranked globally in the top 1% of social media users by Twitter Counter, and more lightheartedly, for four years ranked by Mediaite as one of the "50 Sexiest in TV News."

Political Practitioner
During the last 15 years Lui's reporting has focused on politics, covering every U.S. national election since 2004. He has interviewed hundreds of politicians, from Detroit Mayor to U.S. President. He has been a contributing columnist for USA Today, Politico, Seattle Times, Detroit Free Press, Huffington Post, and others. Lui is a Policy Fellow at UC Riverside.

Lui's passion for politics started in the 70s, when he debated California's controversial Proposition 13 on bus rides to school. His interest turned into a job at the age of 19: campaign manager for San Francisco College Board incumbent Alan Wong. After the election, Lui returned to college. His plan was to write on policy and the affairs of state, subscribing to the Washington Post when it had to be mailed to the west coast.

In the 1990s, Lui reported for news radio KALX during a unique time in California politics. Two of his first stories as a journalist were Dianne Feinstein's first successful U.S. Senate campaign and the Rodney King verdict and riots.

Later in the 2000s, Lui reported from Asia during an increasingly heated political climate. Two Muslim countries in Southeast Asia transformed: Indonesia's Sukarno family was defeated after rule spanning over half a century; and Malaysia's prime minister, after almost a quarter of a century handed over power. Lui also reported on Taiwan's controversial election between pro- and anti- China political parties. He was at Channel NewsAsia, an English-only news network in 20 countries and territories.

He is a Policy Fellow at the University of California Riverside where he explores the cross of public policy and media, Global Ambassador for Plan International, one of 200 active US State Department Traveling Speakers, and spokesperson for NGOs focusing on gender equality and human trafficking including the UN's HeForShe campaign.

Steven and Misa Mead began playing duets virtually as soon as they met, and their first concert as a duo  occurred just a few months after Misa arrived in the UK in 2013. Almost immediately they began to receive works from composers in the UK, in Europe and around the world, and some of these works are featured on their duet CD released in 2017, Love’s Joy.

Misa Mead was born in the city of Kumamoto, in the south west of Japan. She graduated from Tokyo College of Music in 2008. At both high school and university she was a scholarship student. Mead won the unanimous Gold Medal at the European Solo Competition for Young Soloists in Luxembourg 2011, as well winning the first prize at the 4th All-Japan Junior High and Senior High School Students Wind Instruments Solo Contest, 2000, and the 25th All Kyushu Music Competition Gold Award 2001. At the highly prestigious Jeju International Wind and Percussion Solo Competition 2012 and 2014, South Korea, she won third prize. Mead graduated with Honors at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Régional de Paris in 2012. She appeared as a guest artist in March 2013 at Tubamania Festivals in Thailand and May 2013 at the South West Region Tuba Euphonium Conference in California, USA, performing her own compositions. In 2013 she was appointed High School performance assistant at the Tokyo College of Music. She also worked closely with the Tokyo-based Spiel Kammerensemble.

Steven Mead is an English virtuoso euphonium soloist and teacher who has played an important role in achieving worldwide recognition of the instrument. Creating Original Theatre is a Special Topics course for students from any discipline (including non-performance) who wish to explore ways of performing that are not restricted by traditional writing, producing or performing techniques. The studio class serves as a playground in which the performers find their own voices and create portmanteau pieces at the end of the semester. The styles might usually be referred to as Performance Art or Live Art. In the first half of the semester the students are led through weekly exercises or mini projects, creating small pieces driven by prompts from Professor Tulip. In the second half the students form small companies each of which are responsible for a 15 minute (and 22 seconds) performance window. There are no restrictions beyond no damage to the building, its fixtures and fittings or to other performers and the audience. Two of this year's pieces are in performance studios, the other two are in non-performance spaces.

Rahm Emanuel was sworn in to a second term as the 55th mayor of the City of Chicago on May 18th, 2015.

During his first term, Mayor Emanuel launched Building a New Chicago, an $8 billion coordinated infrastructure plan to revitalize the city’s roads, rails, and runways. The plan has already led to the creation of 60,000 new jobs and will create another 40,000 jobs in the next four years.

Over the last year and a half, more than forty corporations have moved or announced their intent to move to Chicago, and the City of Chicago has led the country in corporate relocation and direct foreign investment for four consecutive years.

Prior to becoming Mayor, Emanuel served as the White House Chief of Staff in President Obama’s administration, served three terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and served in the Clinton White House rising to serve as Senior Advisor to the President for Policy and Strategy.

Location: Walgreen Drama Center
Organized By: CEW+

The Women of Color in the Academy Project (WOCAP) will present its 7th Annual Shirley Verrett Award on February 12th, 2018 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. at Stamps Auditorium on U-M's North Campus. The award will be given to Dr. Naomi André, an Associate Professor in the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, Women’s Studies, as well as the Residential College where she serves as Associate Director for Faculty. A reception honoring Dr. André will immediately follow in the lobby.

Dr. André was selected as the recipient of this award in recognition of her scholarship and musicological inquiry into the representation of race, voice, and gender, her deep commitment to diversity as an educational mission, and her contributions to teaching and mentoring women of color scholars in the arts.

Dr. André’s publications include topics on Italian opera, Arnold Schoenberg, women composers, and teaching opera in prisons. Her forthcoming book, Black Opera, History, Power, Engagement (University of Illinois Press, Spring 2018) focuses on how opera has become a unique arena for expressing blackness and presenting new narratives about the intersections of race, gender, and nation, in the West (United States and Europe) as well as in South Africa. Her earlier books, Voicing Gender: Castrati, Travesti, and the Second Woman in Early Nineteenth-Century Italian Opera (2006) and Blackness in Opera (2012, co-edited collection) focus on opera from the nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries and explore constructions of gender, race, and identity.

The event is free and open to the public; however, registration is requested: http://www.cew.umich.edu/events/7th-annual-shirley-verrett-award-ceremony/20171113

Boasting a large, brazen cast of characters who speak in foul-mouthed street language, the play asks one of the most plaguing questions in the Christian ideology. Written by Stephen Adly Guirgis, author of “Our Lady of 121st Street,” the drama features musical theatre students in a straight play.

This play contains strong language and vulgarities that may prove offensive to some. Recommended for mature audiences.

Encores are traditionally the “dessert” of a concert, called upon after a meaty program of sonatas and more savory repertoire. Sometimes they are whimsical little things, charming and sweet, other times full of fire, flash and virtuosity.

Mark your calendars for ‪Wednesday, March 7th‬ when violinists from the studio of Danielle Belen join with the collaborative pianists from the studio of Martin Katz in a fun evening filled with encore pieces.

Mike O’Connell is the founder and President of The Woodmar Group, a California based winery. The Woodmar Group started in 2004 in Napa, California with the focus of using Napa Valley winemaking skills to produce wines that retail in the $10 – $15 price point. The brands include Grayson Cellars, Block Nine, Five Rows, Freelander, Ghostrunner and Hanging Vine and are sold into 50 states and 25 countries. Robert Parker’s The Wine Advocate gave Grayson wines Best Buy ratings for eleven consecutive releases. The company is run by Mike and his wife and is one of the larger family owned wineries in the United States. The company is named in tribute to Woodmar Country Club, a now defunct golf course in Mike’s native Indiana where he spent countless hours learning life’s lessons playing golf. Prior to founding The Woodmar Group, Mike ran legendary Indy car driver Mario Andretti’s winery, Andretti Winery, in Napa California where he grew sales 100% in three years. The turn-around plan included renegotiating contracts, reducing the product line, improving product quality, redesigning packaging and building a national sales force.

You’ll learn what works, what doesn’t and how to avoid the potential pitfalls along the way. This is a must-hear talk for anyone who is serious about dramatically improving their growth and strategic position. It is a once in a career opportunity. To maximize the value of the talk, you should also read the book Blue Ocean Shift.

Performers include SMTD faculty Caroline Helton, Carmen Pelton, Scott Piper, George Shirley, and Louise Toppin, and SMTD alumni Rikki Morrow-Spitzer, Benjamin Sieverding, Kira Slovacek, and Kimberly Haynes Stephens. SMTD Professor Timothy Cheek will serve as pianist.

Reading the source material that inspired each piece, religious leaders on the concert will be Rabbi Sara O'Donnell Adler, Chaplain, U-M Michigan Medicine, Imam Kamau Ayubbi, Chaplain, U-M Michigan Medicine, Rev. Fr. James P. Conlon, Pastor, St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Ann Arbor, and Rev. Susan Schilperoort, retired Minister, Presbyterian Church USA.

While in New York in 1894, Czech composer Antonín Dvořák composed his cycle of 10 Biblical Songs for voice and piano, set to various verses from the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament. Each song on this celebratory concert will be sung in the original Czech but preceded by an oral English translation of the particular psalm–recited, in turns, by a Catholic priest, a Jewish rabbi, a Muslim Imam, and a Protestant minister, as well as SMTD Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer Freyja Harris.

The concert also celebrates ties between Czech composer Antonín Dvořák and the USA, as he taught for several years at the National Conservatory in New York City, and was the first to advocate for basing a national musical style on Negro Spirituals and Native American music at a time when American composers were looking to Europe for their model. Lastly, the concert also celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of Czechoslovakia in 1918.

Sexual Harassment in Engineering (October 1, 2018 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/51305 51305-12044086@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 1, 2018 3:30pm
Location: Walgreen Drama Center
Organized By: Institute for Research on Women and Gender

The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine recently published a report on the impact of sexual harassment on the career advancement of women in academic scientific, technical, and medical fields. The report identifies key findings on the causes and impacts of sexual harassment in academia and makes recommendations to address and prevent it.

This event will include a summary of the report, discussion from the report’s co-authors, commentary from disciplinary experts, and Q&A with the audience. A reception will follow.

Welcome by Alec D. Gallimore, Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering, Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Professor of Engineering, U-M

PANELISTS :
- Gilda A. Barabino,* Daniel and Frances Berg Professor and Dean, Grove School of Engineering, City College of New York
- Alec D. Gallimore, Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering, Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Professor of Engineering, U-M
- Allison Steiner, Professor of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering, and the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, U-M

REPORT OVERVIEW & PANEL MODERATION:
- Lilia Cortina,* Associate Director of ADVANCE for the College of LSA; Professor of Psychology, Women’s Studies, and Management and Organizations, U-M
- Anna Kirkland,* Director of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender; Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Women’s Studies, U-M

Preventing and effectively addressing sexual harassment of women in colleges and universities has remained a challenge for decades. More than half of women faculty and staff report having been harassed. Student surveys of university systems show disturbingly similar rates, with 20–50% of women students experiencing sexually harassing behavior perpetrated by faculty or staff.

Persistent sexual harassment in STEM fields, and its adverse impacts on women’s careers, jeopardizes progress in closing the gender gap, damages research integrity, and results in a costly loss of talent. Academic sciences, engineering, and medicine share characteristics that create conditions for harassment, but many findings of the report are not limited to STEM field settings. Other fields within academia can be similarly male-dominated, hierarchical work and learning settings in which abusive cultures may form. Such environments can silence and limit the career opportunities for both the targets of the sexual harassment and bystanders, causing both men and women to leave their fields.

This panel discussion will offer broad discussion of use to any member of the university community or the public interested in sexual harassment in academia

Sexual Harassment in the Academy Panel Discussion Series is presented by IRWG and the Office of Research, with co-sponsorship from: ADVANCE, The Office for Health Equity and Inclusion, the College of Literature Sciences, and the Arts, and the College of Engineering
