This "Friends and Family" concert by Michigan Chamber Players, curated by Aleksandra Vojčić, is dedicated to all children without parents. The secret protagonist of the afternoon, the piano, gradually loses its voice over the course of the concert and becomes a percussion instrument, while also emulating the harp and the musical saw. In the Michigan premiere of Crumb's Ancient Voices of Children that closes the program, we witness haunting imagery as parent and child seek one another along with the lost voice of the child. All featured works are rooted in Ann Arbor, and as an uninterrupted musical journey, offer dramatic commentary on people and their families. An entire community of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and larger U-M family has come together to take this journey together.

PROGRAM: Gabriela Lena Frank- Manhattan Serenades; Andrew Bishop- The Archeologist, dedicated to George Crumb Ellen Rowe- Visa Blues; Kristin Kuster- ANDO: Light against Shade; György Ligeti (arr. Jonathan Mashburn)- Entrelacs; George Crumb- Ancient Voices of Children (U-M premiere)

1995, Athens, Ohio.
Agnes, a high school teacher, has found a D&D module (campaign guide) written by her teenage sister, Tilly, who has recently died in a car crash. She finds Chuck, a high schooler working at an RPG game store, and asks him to help her understand the module and play out the campaign. Initially taken aback by the complexity and “nerdiness” of the game, she uses it as a way of understanding her sister. As the play progresses, each character within the game is revealed to have a real-world counterpart, all of whom Agnes gets to meet. The play takes place both in the real world and within the D&D campaign.
Let your imagination run wild and come join us for a night of fantasy!

Preston returns home one night to Emma. The conversation they have opens up the floodgates of every problem between them; all of the secrets they've kept from one another, everything they are too afraid to say. Preston suggests a solution—a drinking game. The rules of the game dictate that they pour six shots and ask each other honest, essential questions about the nature of their relationship. At any time, if someone wants to kill a topic or doesn't want to answer the question, they take a shot. If they finish all six shots, it means their relationship is beyond saving and they have to break up. Roulette asks us to consider whether human relationships are built on mutual effort or some uncontrollable, cosmic force.

Queer Spiritual Drifting: Site-Specific Performance and Writing

Tuesday, April 2, 2019
6:00pm
Walgreen Drama Center, Room B207

How can drifting find space on the page? Let’s think together about connections between performance practice and writing, about embodiment and the page, and about widening audiencing procedures for performance. In 2017, Petra Kuppers travelled to Belgium and the Netherlands as part of an Olimpias disability performance exploration of queer spiritual asylum spaces. In this talk, Petra will discuss these performance actions and the resulting publication, a travelogue essay in Performance Research, ‘Queer Spiritual Drifting: Not at home in The Beguinage.’

The Center for World Performance Studies Faculty Lecture Series features our Faculty Fellows and visiting scholars and practitioners in the fields of ethnography and performance. Designed to create an informal and intimate setting for intellectual exchange among students, scholars, and the community, faculty are invited to present their work in an interactive and performative fashion.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777, at least one week in advance of this event. Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

A new play by José Casas

Department of Theatre & Drama

In the style of The Laramie Project, Flint explores the current state of the Michigan city’s water crisis through narratives based upon and inspired by the lives and stories of people affected by the tragedy.

Department of Theatre & Drama faculty member and playwright José Casas defines himself as an issue-based playwright. Casas’s new drama creates a mosaic of a city struggling to survive and present itself to the world by exploring its hidden stories and history. Guest stage director Dexter Singleton, now based on the East Coast, grew up in Detroit and has relatives in Flint, bringing a local touch to the production. With many of the issues remaining unresolved four years out, Flint serves as a platform for dialogue regarding the future of the city and its resilient residents, as well as for other communities facing similar problems.

Chicago-based vocal trio Artemisia (Diana Lawrence, Alexandra Olsavsky, and Kaitlin Foley) harnesses the power of the female voice to explore complex social issues through the vocal traditions of the world. Praised for “sincerity, wit, and mind-blowing technique” (Vocal Arts Chicago), Artemisia brings diversity and accessibility to their programming. Not your typical stand-and-sing ensemble, Artemisia draws from a vast repertoire of vocal styles to take audiences on a journey of sound and spirit with every performance. In addition to performing, Artemisia works with community and youth ensembles to advocate for a culturally literate and socially aware approach to singing. Artemisia will be performing their show “Suit and Tie,” a program featuring music that was originally performed by/used by men, now sung by women. It is a fully staged, immersive show that explores gender in music and culture, told through the vocal music traditions from all around the world in an accessible and humorous narrative.

Devised Dance/Theatre piece inspired by short stories by Haruki Murakami and many more. Directed by Tzveta Kassabova with the cast. “And then I realized that the deep darkness inside me had vanished. Suddenly. As suddenly as it has come. I raised myself from the sand and, without bothering either to take off my shoes or roll up my cuffs, walked into the surf to let the waves lap at my ankles.” What does it mean to tell a story? Who is the storyteller, who is listening? What real geography is surrounding us and what landscape do we imagine in our stories?

Join the Michigan Engineering community for a conversation with leaders from the nuclear industry, including former leadership from the Department of Energy. Dr. Monica Regalbuto, Idaho National Laboratory, served as former Assistant Secretary for Energy and Environmental Management for the U.S. Department of Energy where she was responsible for clean-up of sites, including Rocky Flats and the Hanford site. River Bennett is a Nuclear Policy Analyst for Nuclear Innovation Alliance which supports entrepreneurialism and commercialization of advanced nuclear energy systems with the goal of providing more economically competitive, carbon-free energy to the world. He is an advocate with Students for Nuclear. Dr. Sola Talabi is a consultant with Pittsburgh Technical, providing expertise in risk management consulting within the nuclear energy industry. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Ann Verhey-Henke, Strategic Director of the U-M Center for Socially Engaged Design.

Panelists will provide insight in several areas, such as:
-What is the status of clean-up of sites like Rocky Flats and Hanford? What big challenges are remaining?
-What are the global implications of nuclear energy growth? Where is nuclear energy growing most significantly? Does this represent a challenge or a new opportunity?
-Is nuclear energy safe? Can it be contained? How do we assess risk in this area?
-How accurate is the portrayal of Rocky Flats as presented in “Full Body Burden” by Kristen Iversen?

Members of the Michigan Engineering community who read "Full Body Burden” will find this discussion an engaging follow-up to the text. This panel is relevant and open to all members of the University of Michigan community.

Adapted by Kate Hamill.
Based on the novel by Jane Austen.
Directed by Priscilla Lindsay.

When sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood are left financially destitute by their father’s sudden passing, they must navigate the perilous social circles in their new, vulnerable status. As potential suitors come and go, so do their hopes for true love. Full of gossip, humor, and heart-felt moments, this classic story examines the effects of societal pressures on love and life. The play Sense and Sensibility premiered in 2014 at New York City’s Bedlam Theater Company, returning for another, longer run in 2016, and was named The New York Times Critic’s Pick for both years. The New York Times calls Sense and Sensibility a “bouncy, jaunty take on Austen…[that] remains remarkably true to the values and priorities of its source.”

The New York Times calls Sense and Sensibility a “bouncy, jaunty take on Austen…[that] remains remarkably true to the values and priorities of its source.”

Center for World Performance Studies presents Makuyeika: Colectivo Teatral, founded by U-M alumnus Héctor Flores Komatsu, for a one week artist residency that will include class visits, workshops and two performances of their devised-work Andares. This piece chronicles the lives of indigenous youth in México, and the realities that they face at the crossroads of modern life and tradition. Performances of the piece will take place in the Newman Studio at Walgreen Drama Center on Thursday, October 17 and Friday, October 18 at 8pm.

Makuyeika: Colectivo Teatral is a theatre ensemble dedicated to creating original works about the narratives and theatricalities of Mexico’s indigenous people, touching with keen, artistic sensibility themes of great social, cultural, and human value. Meaning “wayfarer” in the language of the Wixarika people, Makuyeika was formed after an extensive search across the country’s indigenous communities, a project undertaken by Flores Komatsu as an inaugural recipient of The Julie Taymor World Theatre Fellowship.

Andares is a theatre creation about the lives of indigenous youth in México, devised collectively through personal anecdotes, ancestral myths, as well as traditional music and art forms. The play shines light on a range of realities — land usurpation, widespread violence, ancestral duties, community resistance, — that indigenous people face at the crossroads of modern life and tradition. Meaning “pathways,” Andares is a genuine, eye-opening, and intimate close-up on Mexico’s most remote corners and the extraordinary stories of its humble, everyday inhabitants.

Co-sponsored by: Center for Latin American & Caribbean Studies; LSA Department of American Culture; LSA Latina/o Studies; LSA Native American Studies; LSA Residential College; SMTD Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; SMTD EXCEL; and SMTD Department of Theatre & Drama.

From Lab to Site: Innovation in Concrete (October 31, 2019 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/65602 65602-16966892@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, October 31, 2019 6:00pm
Location: Walgreen Drama Center
Organized By: Civil and Environmental Engineering

From the climate imperatives to make the built environment carbon positive to novel material forming techniques such as 3D printing, concrete is undergoing a transformation along different fronts in the building industry. As computational design and digital fabrication technologies become mainstream in the AEC industries, scaling up to address construction level challenges, concrete holds tremendous promise for the future, not only in shaping our built environment but also in how we build, our ethos and aspirations. Yet, there are many hurdles to overcome. With traditional building processes steeped in protocols and regulations, moving R+D to the building sector requires an awareness of the different players, institutions, and contingencies that shape the contours of concrete innovation.

What approaches contribute to a smooth transfer of innovations to the building sector? Given new modes of manufacturing, what are the new codes and standards that will govern the path toward implementation? What cross-platform systems will need to be in place in order to facilitate automation and construction productivity? What are the new technologies and associated expertise that will emerge to redefine architectural practice and the building industry, especially to navigate and manage the increasingly multi-disciplinary teams?

This symposium, rather than a survey of contemporary concrete architecture, brings researchers and industry experts together from diverse disciplinary fields and areas of production – history & theory, engineering, construction technology, material science, design, and manufacturing – for a timely discussion centered on concrete as a building material with enormous potential for innovation. The symposium aims to foster and identify trajectories for advancing concrete research and align potential collaborative exchanges.

Co-organized by the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning and the University of Michigan College of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the symposium will launch with an evening keynote lecture on Thursday, October 31, followed by a full day symposium on Friday, November 1. The format consists of paired presentations centered on different topics related to concrete research, with a second keynote lecture at noon. A closing panel discussion aims to chart trajectories and methodologies for research and collaboration. Friday’s event will conclude with an exhibition opening reception downtown at the Liberty Research Annex gallery, highlighting some of the work produced by participants, including a performance by Brandon Clifford and Davide Zampini of Cemex.

The symposium is free and open to the public, and will also be available via live stream.

Mindfulness is the process of bringing a present-centered, intentional, and non-judgmental state of awareness to everyday experience. Emerging research suggests that practicing mindfulness may result in a number of beneficial outcomes for musicians, including improved focus, psychological resilience, and pro-social feelings and behaviors. But what do we truly know about mindfulness and its potential to transform our life and work? How can we separate the hype from the reality, and how might mindfulness fit into our already busy lives? In this talk, Diaz will discuss the promises and perils of mindfulness from his perspective as teacher, scholar, and practitioner of this ancient practice.

Diaz is associate professor of Music Education at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music and an active scholar and teacher in the field of contemplative science. He is also affiliate faculty for IU’s Cognitive Science program and co-director of the Music and Mind Lab at Indiana. Diaz is the founder and director of the Institute for Mindfulness-Based Wellness and Pedagogy, where he collaborates with an international group of artists, educators, and scholars on disseminating research and best practices on the art of mindful living, teaching, and performance. Along with his work on mindfulness, Diaz maintains an active schedule as a performer, conductor, adjudicator, and clinician. His work on mindfulness has been published in top-tier music education and music psychology journals, and has been featured on NPR, The Huffington Post, and other local and national media outlets.

By Quiara Alegría Hudes
Directed by Geoff Packard

Yazmin Ortiz has been spinning her wheels in academia as an adjunct professor of music when the death of a prominent family member brings her back to the barrio and to her cousin, Elliot Ortiz, a returned Iraq War veteran who struggles to deal with the memories of the war he left behind. Odessa Ortiz, Elliot’s mother and a recovering addict, is the founder and administrator of an online chatroom for other recovering addicts, helping them stay on the straight and narrow. Odessa’s online chatroom brings people together for comfort and support who may have never met otherwise, as her real-life family is splintering at a rapid pace. Inventive and timely, Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Pulitzer Prize-winning Water by the Spoonful is a powerful, compassionate look at the meaning of family, and the burdens we must carry to protect it.

Water by the Spoonful gets its name from the restorative power of water. The play was commissioned by Hartford Stage while Quiara Alegría Hudes (who also wrote the book for the Tony Award-winning In The Heights) was an Aetna New Voices Fellow. The play debuted in October, 2011 to strong reviews, with one critic describing it as “one of the best new plays I’ve seen in years” (Frank Rizzo, The Hartford Courant). It received a similar welcome when it opened Off-Broadway in 2013, and won a Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2012. “A combination poem, prayer, and app on how to cope in an age of uncertainty, speed, and chaos” (Variety), Water by the Spoonful is a thought-provoking and heartwarming piece about finding and granting forgiveness, to yourself and others

Water by the Spoonful contains strong language and sensitive themes including PTSD, addiction, and suicide. Audience discretion is advised.

Sara Jones, a Ross MBA ‘10, was one of the first people named to work on Boeing’s ambitious, future-looking HorizonX organization when it was announced in 2017. Now, her work with the company on creating the next generation of the aerospace industry is getting recognized in the press.

Recently listed among the 40 Under 40 in Seattle by the Puget Sound Business Journal for her contributions to the future of business, Jones is a principal strategist for Boeing’s HorizonX and NeXt teams, which includes three other Michigan and Ross alumni — Michael Hauser, MBA ‘02; Duane Gardner, BSE ‘14; Tyler Jackson, MSE ‘16.

Together, along with a team of about 50 people, they work on identifying, commercializing, and operationalizing, the future technologies and business models that will help Boeing not only stay competitive, but lead innovation in the aerospace industry. Their vision is to bring flight closer to home through initiatives like autonomous passenger and cargo air vehicles, hybrid electric airplanes and the ecosystems that will support them.
