Professor Chavasse presents research from her travels to the Malta Festival in Poznan, Poland, and to Berlin, Germany where she created a new dance work for Tanz Tangente. In Poznan, the panoply of dance, music and theater events focused on the festival theme-- The Balkans Platform, (Platforma Blakany), with the title of "We The People", analogous to our "not my president" protests. Chavasse will discuss the highly politicized works she witnessed as an audience member, posing questions about gender politics and social inequality and autocracy. She will also discuss the genesis of a new dance created with Tanz Tangente in Berlin, called "Little Monsters,” in which the movement exploration is centered around pulsing, agitation, manipulation and absence.

The Center for World Performance Studies Faculty Lecture Series features our Faculty Fellows and visiting scholars and practitioners in the fields of ethnography and performance. Designed to create an informal and intimate setting for intellectual exchange among students, scholars, and the community, faculty are invited to present their work in an interactive and performative fashion.

If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to participate in this event, please contact Center for World Performance Studies, at 734-936-2777, at least one week in advance of this event. Kaoru Watanabe went from being culturally "American," playing classical music as a child in St. Louis and studying jazz flute and saxophone at the Manhattan School of Music, to being a member of the globetrotting Japanese taiko drumming ensemble Kodo and becoming a leading specialist in the bamboo shinobue flute. He now lives back in New York, creating his own genre of music that reflects the entirety of his musical and cultural experiences and collaborating with artists like pianist Jason Moran, filmmaker Wes Anderson and Yo-Yo Ma and the Silkroad Ensemble.

For his talk at the Residential College, Watanabe will address the unending series of adaptations he's dealt with through this journey and reflect on how it has affected his art.

Watanabe also performs at Kerrytown Concert House on Tuesday, 11/14 at 8pm.

Graduate School Info Session (November 17, 2017 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/46443 46443-10489760@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 17, 2017 3:00pm
Location: East Quadrangle
Organized By: Department of Linguistics

Linguistics PhD student Rachel Elizabeth Weissler is hosting an information session for undergraduates interested in applying to graduate school! Before attending U-M, Rachel was a part of the Institute for Recruitment of Teachers (IRT). IRT is a program that helped her apply to graduate school by covering the cost of applying and providing GRE prep.

What is IRT?
The IRT addresses the lack of diversity in the nation's teaching faculties by recruiting outstanding students of color and other scholars committed to diversity, counseling them through the graduate school application process, and advocating for sufficient funding for advanced study. Since 1990, the IRT has built a national consortium of colleges and universities that are eager to enroll IRT students to diversify their graduate student bodies and to expand the pipeline of educators to teach, counsel, and administrate in American schools, colleges, and universities.

From early September through mid-November, all IRT participants receive the following support throughout the graduate school application process at no charge, which include:
1. Individualized support and extensive counseling as fellows choose graduate programs and apply to a renowned consortium of graduate schools across the country
2. Application fee waivers for up to 12 consortium schools
3. Assistance in fine-tuning statements of purpose, resumes, and writing samples

Additionally, the IRT sponsors a Summer Workshop, a paid internship on the Phillips Academy campus, located just outside of Boston, MA. Participants engage in a graduate-level curriculum of critical, cultural, and educational theory during an intense four-week program; students and faculty work together nine hours each day, seven days a week.

Professor Partridge’s Filming Future Cities project uses film as a critical means to investigate urban futures and engage a broader public, building on his ongoing collaborative film projects in Detroit and Berlin: “Filming the Future of Detroit,’’ and “Filming the Future from Berlin: Noncitizen Perspectives,’’ begun in 2014 (see filmingfuturecities.org). The point of the project is not only to teach refugees, migrants, youth, and noncitizens the skills required for filmmaking, ethnography, and critical analysis of urban landscapes, but also to teach them how to distribute their work to a broader audience and to participate in the planning for and imagination of their city’s future. Using the project’s films as examples, this talk will think through the efficacy of using film as a technique for shaping the future.

Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

The PCAP student organization, known as the PCAP membership, welcomes both students and community members who align themselves with PCAP's mission and values. Many of our PCAP members facilitate creative arts workshops in juvenile detention and treatment centers, adult correctional facilities, and in the community with people who have returned home from prison. PCAP membership meetings offer peer support for workshop facilitators, planning time for committees, and a group discussion or activity for all volunteers.

Professor Askew presents the research findings for her current book project, exploring how Tanzanians and Zanzibaris musically and poetically respond to the changes that have taken place since the unraveling of socialism in the mid-1980s. With a focus on popularly produced poetry in Swahili-language newspapers or performed as Swahili rap, this talk explores how ordinary citizens interpret, enact and react to the fusing of socialist and neoliberal practices and ideologies in the United Republic of Tanzania.

University of Michigan MM Improvisation and Center for World Performance Studies alum Adam Shead brings his quartet with Amsterdam musicians and coordinators of Dutch improv organization DoEk, John Dikeman and Casper Townkeepers, to the Keene Theater on February 22nd for a performance and discussion regarding concepts of improvisation such as cultural memory, tradition, authenticity, innovation, common language, activism through improvisation, and the business of non-commercial music. Adam Shead met both Dikeman and Townkeepers while doing research in Amsterdam, NL where he subsequently recorded a duo album with each performer, as well as interning for DoEk. During Adam's time in Amsterdam he conducted interviews, performances, and recording projects dealing with improvisation such as cultural memory. The opportunities and discoveries brought about during Adam's time with the Center for World Performance Studies have become quintessential to his life's work, ultimately resulting in the formation of a new quartet with John Dikeman, Casper Townkeepers, and Tony Piazza. The quartet is set to tour the United States in February/March, and will also perform at Ziggy’s in Ypsilanti at 8pm on Thursday, February 22.

William Kentridge: Drawings for Projection (March 8, 2018 7:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/50531 50531-11793846@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 8, 2018 7:10pm

The charcoal drawing animations of South African artist William Kentridge chronicle the exploits of Soho Eckstein, construction magnate, and Felix Teitelbaum, dreamy artist who only appears naked, two alter egos of Kentridge. The short films of Nine Drawings for Projection are a personal and political meditation on contradictions in South Africa, during Apartheid and after its legislative demise. This is a rare opportunity to view several short films from Kentridge's landmark series, which are normally only shown in museums.

This screening forms part of the interdisciplinary course Personal, Present and Immediate*: Making Performance on Socio-Political Questions, and is open to the public. A post-screening discussion will be moderated by Artist in Residence and Visiting Professor Eryn Rosenthal.

Note: These films include depictions of violence and nudity.

Please RSVP at the link below.

* “Personal, present and immediate”: From Murray v. Maryland (1935), one of the precedents to the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education (1954).
Note: These films contain nudity and graphic images.

During the latter half of the 1980s, a popular dance craze known as "piliwu" 霹雳舞 swept urban communities across China. Incorporating two new styles of U.S. urban popular dance--New York-based b-boying/b-girling or "breaking" and California-based popping and locking-- piliwu was China's first localized movement of hip-hop culture, which reflected new circuits of intercultural exchange between China and the United States during the first decade of China's Reform Era. Analyzing the dance choreography recorded in a 1988 Chinese film, Rock Youth 摇滚青年 (dir. Tian Zhangzhuang), together with media reports and testimonials from members of China's piliwu generation, this talk reconstructs the history of the piliwu movement, arguing for the central influence of U.S. pop culture icon Michael Jackson, the growth of China's underground commercial dance (zou xue 走穴) economy, and the agency of dancers' bodies in transnational movements of media culture.

Please be aware that advance notice is necessary as some accommodations may require more time for the University to arrange.

LIFE ON THE SWERVE: Once Upon a Time Called Now! is a show based on the performance methods of RHODESSA JONES & THE MEDEA PROJECT: Theater for Incarcerated Women/HIV Circle, which are rooted in autobiographical theater and Greek myth. Ms. Jones will be accompanied by renown musician/composer, Idris Ackamoor, and long - time Medea actress, Felicia Scaggs as they present a musically informed theatrical production. There will be a Q & A/Discussion with Rhodessa Jones and accompanying performers after the show. The Medea Project serves incarcerated, formerly incarcerated, and HIV + women and community members, empowering them to heal their lives by connecting to the larger mythical fabric of the world's great stories linking their own stories to them. Some of the themes in the presentation relate to issues of HIV, addiction, prison, loss, and recovery. Myth involves the invocation of deities as well as primordial entities: these stories connect our individual lives to patterns of change, transformation, growth, and power.

THE MEDEA PROJECT is a production of Cultural Odyssey, which continues to develop original productions that demonstrate their vision of “ARTS AS SOCIAL ACTIVISM”. In 1989, on the basis of material developed while conducting classes at the San Francisco County Jail, Rhodessa Jones created “Big Butt Girls, Hard Headed Women”, a performance piece based on the lives of the incarcerated women she encountered. During the work’s creation, Jones and jail officials were made aware of issues that were specific to female inmates, such as guilt, depression, and self-loathing, which arose in response to feelings of failure in the face of community. These issues directly contribute to recidivism among female offenders. Based on this observation, Jones founded THE MEDEA PROJECT: THEATER FOR INCARCERATED WOMEN to explore whether an arts-based approach could help reduce the numbers of women returning to jail.

In 2008, THE MEDEA PROJECT joined forces with University of California San Francisco’s Women’s HIV Clinic to create theater that explores what it means to be living with the virus in the twenty-first century. For the past seven years, The Medea Project: HIV Circle has performed shows all around the United States, sharing the Truth and the stories of what it means to be female and infected or affected.

Maine Inside Out (MIO) artists facilitate the creation of original theater to engage the community in dialogue about issues related to incarceration. Chiara Libertore, one of Professor Emeritus William “Buzz” Alexander’s first students (LSA English Language and Literature) in what would become the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP), co-founded the MIO non-profit in 2007. MIO provides year round voluntary theater workshops for more than half of the young people at Long Creek Youth Development Center in South Portland, Maine. Its reintegration program for newly-released Maine Inside Out participants includes weekly community groups, mentoring, and transitional employment opportunities for youth in three Maine communities that incarcerate the highest number of young people. MIO’s transformative justice curriculum includes a new original production created by young adult artists debuting in 2017. Join us for a public performance and dialogue in the Residential College’s Keene Theater.

Come home Charley Patton (March 29, 2018 7:10pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/51464 51464-12112487@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 29, 2018 7:10pm

In 2005, Ralph Lemon completed THE GEOGRAPHY TRILOGY, a 10-year project that was a profound self-examination and a sustained inquiry into the social gravities of art, race and identity at the turn of the 21st century. The Trilogy developed a global performance and visual language that was simultaneously modern and traditional, East and West, light and dark, formal and free form. The primacy of process, and the richness of materials that process uncovered-- artistic, emotional, historical-- created profound questions for Ralph as to how best to 'translate' the process and 'control' the materials in order to bring a work for audiences to the stage. The ongoing struggle between process and production created a tension that became a vital element in the Trilogy works, which ultimately included dance/theater performances, books, video journals, web projects and gallery exhibitions.

Part 1: Geography (premiered 1997), began with Lemon's exploration into apparent African and post-African connections to his life as an African American. The cast included nine men of African descent from Cٴe d'Ivoire, Guinea and the U.S.

In Part 2: Tree: (premiered 2000), Lemon directed his inquiry to Asia, following his attraction to Buddhism and how it might generate an art aesthetic. Tree placed the energy and sound of the "Africa" of Geography next to a perceived Asian "quiet," while exploring the collision of tradition and modernity through contemporary performance. Performers included male and female dancers and musicians from Cٴe d'Ivoire, China, India, Japan, Taiwan and the United States.

For Part 3: Come home Charley Patton (premiered 2004), Lemon returned to America. Here, he visited charged sites from the volatile history of the Civil Rights period, performed ritual "counter-memorials" at lynching sites, and danced in the living rooms of relatives of early blues musicians from the Mississippi Delta. Lemon also wove ideas from a mix of iconoclastic artists of contemporary literature and performance art, from James Baldwin to Bruce Nauman, into this historically charged research of rural America. Come Home Charley Patton investigated how different generations remember the same critical events and places; what kind of narratives do justice to traumatic memories; and what form memories can ultimately take through the aesthetic works of this project. The exploration of these elements contributed to a performance where documentary footage and autobiography shared the stage with the abstraction and fiction of contemporary dance/theater.

Choreographed and directed by Ralph Lemon
Featuring performances by Djédjé Djédjé Gervais, Darrell Jones, Ralph Lemon, Gesel Mason, Okwui Okpokwasili, and David Hamilton Thomson

Come home Charley Patton (2004) is the culmination of Lemon's GEOGRAPHY TRILOGY, "a 10-year project that was a profound self-examination and a sustained inquiry into the social gravities of art, race and identity at the turn of the 21st century.

Found instruments are everyday objects that are utilized or repurposed as musical instruments. This class identifies not only these everyday objects with which to perform and reconstruct, but also seeks hybrid instruments that combine found objects with instruments of old. The semester will commence with an overview of instrument categories, tunings, and some of the guiding physics behind instruments. This includes important composers and artists from the early 20th century to current artists and emerging technologies (such as using the iPhone as an instrument). The class goes as a group (and individually) to seek materials for designing and building instruments. The class also covers the basics of musicianship, composition, form, improvisation and playing as an ensemble. The culmination of the class is a presentation of our instruments and a performance in the East Quad Auditorium.

This course and performance led by Professor Michael Gould, Director, Center for World Performance Studies, Professor of Music at the School of Music, Theater and Dance, and the Residential College, LSA
