Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Department of Afroamerican and African Studies

Beauty pageants are big business in Nigeria. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork, in-depth interviews, and discursive analysis of print and visual material, this talk examines how Nigerian beauty contests are transformed by multiple stakeholders into contested vehicles for promoting complex ideas about gender and power, ethnicity and belonging, and a rapidly changing articulation of Nigerian nationhood. I theorize beauty diplomacy as a tactic used to redeem Nigeria's poor reputation, by positioning beauty contestants - young, upwardly mobile, and ambitious women - as the aesthetic center of an ethnically diverse nation and the public face of a country on the economic rise.

The Interdisciplinary Workshop on American Politics (IWAP) is a forum for the presentation of ongoing interdisciplinary research in American politics. Most of our presentations are given by graduate students. Each graduate student presenter is assigned a faculty and student discussant. IWAP circulates the work beforehand and the student presents it briefly at the start of the meeting. “Mobilizing ‘Blackness’: From the Haitian Revolution to Now” (September 27, 2019 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/66703 66703-16770289@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 27, 2019 10:00am

Organized By: Department of Afroamerican and African Studies

From Negritude, to the Anti-Apartheid movement, to Mizrahi Jewish claims to being Black Panthers, to Asian/African/Caribbean coalitions in the United Kingdom, to articulations by German and French youth today, this symposium will address the ways in which “Blackness” has been mobilized to make claims on state and other resources. It will engage the anti-normative forms of living Blackness has enabled. Given these histories and contemporary articulations, it asks: Who can claim Blackness? Under what conditions and with what effect can one make this claim? To what extent does claiming Blackness lead to social change? What are the conditions for coalition around claiming Blackness? Does racism persist, even amongst people of color, in spite of this coalitional claim?

The symposium is free and open to the public and will include a special screening of the documentary Whose Streets? (2018) and the short What Kind of Power Y’All Got (2016) with a Q&A with the filmmakers to follow in Lecture Hall II of the Modern Language Building on Friday, September 27 at 7 PM.

Digital and interactive forms of scholarship challenge established practices in the Arts & Humanities. Audiovisual content, graphic interfaces, and different types of visualizations employed in new forms of presentation and publication (e.g. websites, blogs, online databases, 3D worlds) do not conform with existing concepts of scholarship, and established practices of evaluation. Bringing together 3D model making (scholarship more generally) and the work of digital scholarly editions (DSE) is in fact new, and not a series of scholarly theories and practices that have been previously deployed in the digital humanities. Although these digital vehicles powerfully disseminate and engage with scholarship, scholars who implement these ‘new’ modalities are confronted by “the same old,” established mechanisms with which to gauge ‘impact’ among one’s scholarly peers, i.e. within traditional and long-established publications. Interactive 3D visualization, despite its long tradition in humanities research, is still faced with skepticism and hesitation, not only because of the constant technological shifts and exigencies and the fragile ecosystem within which projects are being developed, but also due to their non-conventional nature that does not adhere to established “norms” and metrics. Nieves will discuss the challenges of doing social justice based work, in digital humanities, while also providing new methods and platforms for dissemination in the Global South. He is currently working on a digital book project entitled, Apartheid Heritages: A Spatial History of South Africa’s Township’s (www.apartheidheritages.org), now under consideration at Stanford University Press as part of their Mellon Foundation-funded digital publishing initiatives.

In commemoration of October as Filipino American History Month, join us at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, as we host another stop on the National Book Tour of Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong, with co-author and publisher, Gayle Romasanta (from Stockton, California), on Monday, October 7, 2019.

About Journey for Justice:

In 2019-2020, Bridge and Delta Publishing in partnership with the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) and PapaLoDown Agency takes “Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong,” on a 20+ city national book tour. This is the first nonfiction illustrated children’s book about Filipino American history, and the first book ever written about Larry Itliong. The children’s book written by the late historian Dawn Bohulano Mabalon, Ph.D. with Gayle Romasanta and illustrated by Andre Sibayan, tells the story of forgotten United Farm Workers (UFW) cofounder, Larry Itliong, his migration to the United States and his lifelong fight for a farmworkers union. The city of Delano, California, was the first stop of the national book tour with events held in Seattle, WA; New York; Washington DC; Anchorage, AK; Santa Ana, CA; Houston, TX; with future stops in Southfield and Ann Arbor, MI; Milwaukee, WI; Chicago, IL; Wapato, WA; Virginia Beach, VA; Irvine, San Diego, Stockton, SF Bay Area, CA; Lancaster and Philadelphia, PA; Honolulu, HI; and more.

“Journey for Justice is a significant children’s book about a legendary pioneer in the farmworkers movement. This was the last book that FANHS National Scholar and Trustee Dr. Dawn Bohulano Mabalon, wrote before she passed away suddenly on Aug. 10, 2018. We are committed to carry on Dawn’s legacy so that people of all ages can learn more about Filipina/o American history. We support this book and strongly encourage everyone to read it and discuss it with their children, community, and educators,” shares University of Michigan Prof. Emily P. Lawsin, FANHS National Vice President.

Currently, Filipino Americans are the largest Asian American group in 10 of the 13 western states, the second largest Asian American population in the nation, and is the oldest Asian population in the nation, with hardly any mention of their contributions to U.S. history in school textbooks. This book will be the first out of a planned series of four books about Filipino American historical figures for students of all ages, from 10 and up. A free teacher’s curriculum guide created by Pin@y Educational Partnerships is available at www.bridgedelta.com.

Bridge and Delta Publisher and Owner Gayle Romasanta and the Filipino American community celebrate and aim to further Dr. Dawn Mabalon’s work to spread Filipino American history, especially “Journey for Justice: The Life of Larry Itliong,” Mabalon’s last book. Romasanta says, “She made history accessible and was a revered community activist. She not only was a scholar, but her work touched the Filipino

American community on a national scale. She not only saved the remaining Filipino neighborhood Little Manila buildings in her hometown of Stockton and named the area ‘Historic Little Manila,’ she traveled the country speaking and connecting with the community and spreading her wealth of knowledge about American history, Filipino American food history, and more. She was the leading Filipino American historian before her untimely passing.”

The Journey for Justice National Book Tour in Michigan will include a community visit to Paaralang Pilipino Language and Cultural School, which is housed in the Philippine American Community Center of Michigan, in Southfield, and a book signing reception and guest lectures at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (in WOMENSTD 151/AMCULT/ASIANPAM 102: Women’s Studies First Year Seminar on Food and Gender in Asian American Communities, and in AMCULT/ASIANPAM 310: Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies [Race & Ethnicity-Social Sciences] class on the Filipino American Experience).

While the Journey for Justice book celebrates Larry Itliong and the history of the Delano Grape Strike, it also highlights Dr. Dawn Mabalon’s life work as the co-founder of Little Manila Rising (formerly the Little Manila Foundation), Filipino American National Historical Society National Scholar and Trustee, a San Francisco State University professor, and author of multiple books including “Little Manila Is In the Heart: The Making of the Filipina/o American Community in Stockton, California” (Duke University Press, 2013).

The so-called explosion of Pentecostal Christianity is one of contemporary Africa’s more astonishing storylines. Yet what might be gained by shifting attention from the amply documented places where Pentecostal churches flourish to the relatively unknown places where they fail? In this talk, anthropologist Devaka Premawardhana reflects on the ambivalence with which Pentecostalism has been received by the Makhuwa-speaking people of northern Mozambique. The Makhuwa are not averse to the newly arrived churches. Many relate to them powerfully, but few remain in them permanently. Premawardhana attributes this religious fluidity to pragmatic and experimental dispositions cultivated by the Makhuwa in their pre-Pentecostal pasts—through migration histories and lifecycle rituals—and carried by them into their post-Pentecostal futures.

Biography
Devaka Premawardhana’s research and teaching bring ethnographic and existential perspectives to bear on the fields of global Christianity and African religions. He is an anthropologist with extensive fieldwork experience in Makhuwa-speaking communities of Mozambique (in southeast Africa). His first book, Faith in Flux: Pentecostalism and Mobility in Rural Mozambique, explores the ambiguities of religious change among a traditionally mobile people. It contests the widely assumed narrative of a worldwide Pentecostal “explosion,” doing so on the grounds that indigenous religions often remain vibrant and influential—even in the lives of converts.Among other awards and honors, Premawardhana was named a 2017 Emerging Scholar by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education magazine. He has served on the editorial board of the Encyclopedia of Christianity in the Global South and currently sits on the steering committee of the American Academy of Religion’s African Religions unit. Before joining Emory’s department of religion in 2018, Premawardhana earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University and taught at Colorado College.Ph.D. in Religion and Anthropology, Harvard University, 2014

Organized By: Arab and Muslim American Studies (AMAS)

In honor of Latinx Heritage History Month, the Arab and Muslim American Studies Program has invited Dr. Harold D. Morales to give a lecture based on his book, Latino and Muslim in America: Race, Religion, and the Making of a New Minority, which is the first complete academic study on Latinx Muslims in the United States.

Dinner will be served!

Dr. Harold D. Morales is an Associate Professor in the department of Philosophy and Religious Studies at Morgan State University where he teaches courses in religious studies and philosophy of religion. He earned his Ph.D. and M.A. in Religious Studies from the University of California Riverside and his B.A. in Philosophy from California State University Fullerton. His research focuses on the intersections between race and religion and between lived and mediated religion. He uses these critical lenses to engage Latinx religions in general and Latino Muslim groups in particular. He is the author of Latino and Muslim in America: Race, Religion, and the Making of a New Minority (2018). His work with Latino Muslim communities spans ten years of media analysis and ethnographic research in California, Texas, Georgia, Florida, New York and New Jersey.

"Latino and Muslim in America examines how so called "minority groups" are made, fragmented, and struggle for recognition in the U.S.A. The U.S. is currently poised to become the first nation whose collective minorities will outnumber the dominant population, and Latinos play no small role inthis world changing demographic shift. Even as many people view Latinos and Muslims as growing threats, Latino Muslims celebrate their intersecting identities both in their daily lives and in their mediated representations online. In this book, Harold Morales follows the lives of several Latino Muslim leaders from the 1970's to the present, and their efforts to organize and unify nationally in order to solidify the new identity group's place within the public sphere. Based on four years of ethnography, media analysis andhistorical research, Morales demonstrates how the phenomenon of Latinos converting to Islam emerges from distinctive immigration patterns and laws, urban spaces, and new media technologies that have increasingly brought Latinos and Muslims in to contact with one another. He explains this growingcommunity as part of the mass exodus out of the Catholic Church, the digitization of religion, and the growth of Islam. Latino and Muslim in America explores the racialization of religion, the framing of religious conversion experiences, the dissemination of post-colonial histories, and thedevelopment of Latino Muslim networks, to show that the categories of race, religion, and media are becoming inextricably entwined."

What are the ways in which settler colonial and Indigenous ontologies structure perception, and listening in particular? This presentation provides an overview of forms of extractive or “hungry” perception, and alternatives to these that emerge from Indigenous sensory engagement. The range of such listening practices are necessarily multiple and dependent upon the specificities of Indigenous and settler epistemes at play, it is nonetheless possible to discern historical patterns of “civilizing” the attention of Indigenous people, and ongoing settler listening practices oriented toward the instrumentalization Indigenous knowledge. In contrast, forms of Indigenous listening resurgence refuse the anthropocentrism of listening, and instead proceed from intersubjective experience between listeners and song-life.

Dylan Robinson is a xwélméxw artist and writer (Stó:lō Nation, Sqwa), and the Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Arts at Queen’s University. His current work focuses on the re-connection of Indigenous songs with communities who were prohibited by law to sing them as part of Canada’s Indian Act from 1882-1951. Robinson’s previous publications include the edited volumes Music and Modernity Among Indigenous Peoples of North America (2018); Arts of Engagement: Taking Aesthetic Action in and Beyond the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (2016); and Opera Indigene (2011). His monograph, Hungry Listening, is forthcoming with Minnesota University Press in early 2020. Additionally, Robinson is curator of the Ka’tarohkwi Festival of Indigenous Arts in Kingston, and along with Candice Hopkins, is curator of the internationally touring exhibition Soundings featuring “scores for decolonial action” by Indigenous artists.

This talk reflects on the key interventions of Navaneetha Mokkil’s recently published book Unruly Figures: Queerness, Sex Work and the Politics of Sexuality in Kerala. Mokkil tracks the cultural practices through which sexual figures are produced in the public imagination and how these figures are accessed and deployed by marginalized sexual subjects, primarily the sex worker and the lesbian, as they stage their own fractured journeys of resistance in the post-1990s context of globalization. She argues that such intermedial and intertextual cultural traffic is the basis of a vernacular politics of sexuality.

By assembling and analyzing a Malayalam language archive, Mokkil demonstrates how vernacular formations of the politics of sexuality cannot be contained within scripts of visibility, rights, and recognition. Her explorations captures the need to revise politics in favor not of a set path but of one that holds within it different possibilities. Mourning and loss, failure, and rewriting are integral to such itinerant political topographies. This talk explores how we have to tactically reinvent categories of analysis so that we can engage with the unstable horizons of the
political.

Navaneetha Mokkil is an Assistant Professor at Center for Women’s Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Her areas of research and teaching include feminist politics in India, print and visual culture, and public formations of sexuality. She completed her PhD in English and Women’s Studies from the University of Michigan in 2010. She is the author of Unruly Figures: Queerness, Sex Work and the Politics of Sexuality in Kerala (2019, Seattle: University of Washington Press) and co- editor of Thinking Women: A Feminist Reader (2019, Kolkata: Stree Samya Publishers).

The events are generously sponsored by the Center for South Asian Studies; the Colonialism, Race, and Sexualities Initiative (CSRI) of the Institute for Research on Women & Gender; the Department of English Language & Literature; and, the Department of Women's Studies.

After discussant feedback, the bulk of the time is reserved for group discussion among all workshop participants. This format leads to informal yet highly interactive and productive conversations.

This talk engages with posthumous paternity, a creative kinship practice of the Yoruba ethnicity of southern Nigeria. It explores how the practice, which survived the repugnancy doctrine of colonial jurisprudence, attests to the multiple interconnections and possibilities in the Yoruba endogenous epistemologies. The talk also explores the similar ideological premises of Yoruba posthumous births and assisted reproduction technology.

Today there are more Chinese restaurants in the United States than the combined total of McDonald’s, Burger King’s, Wendy’s, and KFC chains. This talk tells the history of Chinese restaurants against the backdrop of intense racial discrimination and civic exclusion. Chinese immigrants held the unfortunate distinction of being the first—and for many years only—population of voluntary migrants restricted from entering the country and denied a pathway to citizenship. Between the end of Radical Reconstruction and World War II, Chinese immigrants seized political power and shifted their economic, legal, and cultural positions through food. The talks centers on a handful of Chinese immigrants who strategically and purposefully built bridges of understanding with the wider U.S. population, and leveraged this acceptance to negotiate an immense legal apparatus. This is a story of the resilience of racialized immigrants who managed to become tastemakers, despite the weight of state-sanctioned oppression.

Refreshments will be provided. Please RSVP for food: https://forms.gle/jMh25aUFXCLbjUyc9

Heather Ruth Lee is an Assistant Professor of History at NYU Shanghai. As a scholar and educator, she wrestles with the importance of legal immigration status—the bright line separating citizens from both documented and undocumented migrants—to the history of race and ethnicity in the United States. Her first book, The Business of Becoming Citizens: Chinese Immigrants, Cuisine, and Restaurants from Exclusion to Inclusion in the United States, 1870-1943 tells the history of Chinese restaurants against the backdrop of intense racial discrimination and civic exclusion. Alongside the book, Professor Lee has been working on the “Chinese Restaurant Database Project” (www.eatingglobally.com), an original data source on historical Chinese business operations, migration strategies and demographic information. Her research has been featured in NPR’s All Things Considered, The Salt, The Atlantic, Chicago Tribune, and Gastropod, a podcast on food science and history. Professor Lee has advised and curated exhibitions at the New York Historical Society, the National Museum of American History, the Museum of Chinese in America, and elsewhere.

How does information affect how autocratic governments make concessions to subnational protest campaigns? I argue the strategic purpose of concessions varies depending on the level of information about the grievance available to the government. In cases where the government has little prior awareness of the motivating grievance, protests convey valuable new information, and concessions are used as a long-term adaptation strategy, to eliminate grievances and prevent citizens from becoming regime opponents. In many cases, however, the government already possesses information that policies it desires to pursue are unpopular and will produce protest. Here, the government has sufficient information that it deliberately avoids or manipulates consultative institutions. Concessions are then used as a short-term demobilization strategy to disrupt a campaign’s capacity to mobilize. Once mobilization diminishes, the government can renege, or deliberately fail to implement the promised concession and pursues its desired policies unchanged. I test the implications of this theory with an original dataset, Protest Campaigns of Moscow (PCoM), which contains observations on 64 protest campaigns held in Moscow, Russia, against the city government, from 2013-2018. Based on extensive data collection from Russian-language social networking sites, mass media, and interest-group specific websites, this is the first campaign-level dataset to include detailed information about the implementation of concessions up to four years after the initial government promise. I find that when the government deliberately avoided acquiring public opinion information, reneging occurred in 61% of cases, whereas when consultation was not avoided, reneging occurred in 38% of cases.

Sasha de Vogel's research in comparative politics focuses on the dynamics of authoritarian regimes in the former Soviet Union. She is interested in the relationship between mass mobilization, state repression, institutional reform and regime stability. Her dissertation considers concessions as a strategy of protest demobilization.

The Interdisciplinary Workshop in Comparative Politics (IWCP) provides a platform for sharing and improving research that provides comparative perspectives on the causes and effects of political and economic processes. Professor Lauderdale will present his working paper "The Emergence of Stable Political Choices from Incomplete Political Preferences” which uses a panel conjoint experiment to look at the stability of self-reported issue positions and issue-based candidate choices over time.

Abstract: "Survey research finds that citizens often give temporally unstable responses when asked their positions on policy issues, indicating a lack of 'real' attitudes on many issues. For some, this casts doubt on prominent conceptions of democracy that involve citizens making political choices based on policy considerations. In this paper, we show that despite average instability in issue opinions, voters can nevertheless make meaningful, stable multidimensional political choices based on issue considerations. We draw on a new three-wave survey of the UK public that includes repeated measurements of issue-specific opinions and of the political choices respondents make when confronted with hypothetical candidates taking positions on those issues. We show that candidate choices made after 6 months and 12 months have nearly as strong relationships to self-reported issue positions as do the candidate choices made in the same wave as those self-reports, and that choice stability is high when respondents choose between candidates who take clear and contrasting positions on the issues that respondents tend to care more about. Our findings demonstrate the mechanics underlying long-hypothesized theories of 'issue publics': stable political choices can arise from individuals making choices on the basis of the issues that they care about, even when most people lack real attitudes on many issues.”

The goal of the Interdisciplinary Seminar in Quantitative Methods is to provide an interdisciplinary environment where researchers can present and discuss cutting-edge research in quantitative methodology. The talks are aimed at a broad audience, with emphasis on conceptual rather than technical issues. The research presented is varied, ranging from new methodological developments to applied empirical papers that use methodology in an innovative way. We welcome speakers and audiences from all disciplines and fields, including the social, natural, biomedical, and behavioral sciences.

The 1619 Project: Episode 5, part 1 and 2: The Land of our Fathers (January 27, 2020 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71001 71001-17766501@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 27, 2020 6:00pm
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Department of Afroamerican and African Studies

Part 1: More than a century and a half after the promise of 40 acres and a mule, the story of black land ownership in America remains one of loss and dispossession. June and Angie Provost, who trace their family line to the enslaved workers on Louisiana’s sugar-cane plantations, know this story well.

On today’s episode: The Provosts spoke with Adizah Eghan and Annie Brown, producers for “1619.”
Part 2: The Provosts, a family of sugar-cane farmers in Louisiana, had worked the same land for generations. When it became harder and harder to keep hold of that land, June Provost and his wife, Angie, didn’t know why — and then a phone call changed their understanding of everything. In the finale of “1619,” we hear the rest of June and Angie’s story, and its echoes in a past case that led to the largest civil rights settlement in American history.

On today’s episode: June and Angie Provost; Adizah Eghan and Annie Brown, producers for “1619”; and Khalil Gibran Muhammad, a professor of history, race and public policy at Harvard University and the author of “The Condemnation of Blackness.”

“1619” is a New York Times audio series hosted by Nikole Hannah-Jones. You can find more information about it at nytimes.com/1619podcast.

Biography
Robert Launay is a social/cultural anthropologist trained in the United States, England, and France. He has conducted extensive field work in West Africa (specifically in Côte d’Ivoire) with Muslim minorities historically specializing in trade. His first book, Traders without Trade (Cambridge University Press), focused on how this minority was able to adapt to its loss over its former trade monopoly. His second book, Beyond the Stream: Islam and Society in a West African Town (University of California Press), which won the Amaury Talbot Prize for best African ethnography in England in 1992, dealt specifically with religious change and controversy. He has recently edited a volume on Islamic Education in Africa: Writing Boards and Blackboards (Indiana University Press, in press).

After years of teaching the history of anthropology to undergraduates and graduates alike in the department, he has begun research on the history of the discipline, publishing several articles on the history of ethnography in Africa (particularly in French) and, more extensively, on the ‘prehistory’ of the field. His recently publishd book, Savages, Despots, and Romans: The Urge to Compare and the Origins of Anthropology, traces the ways in which “modern Europeans” came to define themselves with reference to non-moderns (ancient Greeks and Romans in particular) and non-Europeans from the fourteenth to the eighteenth centuries. He has edited an anthology of early sources in anthropology, Foundations of Anthropological Theory: From classical antiquity to the eighteenth century (Wiley/Blackwell 2010)

Most recently, he has begun a project on French foodways in the Midwest, in collaboration with Aurelien Mauxion, a graduate of the program who wrote his dissertation under his supervision. The project takes as its starting point the fact that the Midwest was colonized by France before it became part of the United States. They are looking at how early French settlers adapted to specifically American foods and environments, and how contemporary descendants of French settlers express their identities in terms of what they cook and eat.

In Spring 2018, Prof. Launay spoke at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, the Université Libre de Bruxelles in Brussels, the Fondazione per le Scienze Religiose Giovanni XXIII in Bologna, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, and the Universities of Bayreuth and Gottingen in Germany.
Research and teaching interests
The history and ‘prehistory’ of anthropological theory, as well as its contemporary developments; the anthropology of scriptural religions, with particular focus on Islam; the historical ethnography of West Africa; the anthropology of food, particularly French foodways in the American Midwest.

After discussant feedback, the bulk of the time is reserved for group discussion among all workshop participants. This format leads to informal yet highly interactive and productive conversations.

Party leaders are seen as the face and central control of a political party’s agenda (also possibly the legislature). This asks the question, with all this power why would a leader ever relinquish their position? Little work has looked comparatively at why leaders step down from office due to data limitations. We contribute to the literature on party politics and leader tenure by providing a new dataset of leadership changes in advanced industrial democracies from 1960-2017. This dataset includes approximately 1,400 party leaders, and it codes why leaders step down using primary and secondary sources. With these original data, we investigate the drivers of leadership change across time and space. We find that electoral loss and intra-party ousting are the most common forms of leadership change, suggesting that voters and party members have effective power to check leaders. Even though we analyze cases with different party systems and institutions our findings suggest similar outcomes. A leader’s survival is contingent on party member and voter support. We test the relationship between vote loss, incumbency status, and leadership change to understand the role of external drivers on party organization. This new data provides a unique tool for understanding party organization more broadly.

Julia Maynard is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan. She studies party politics and voting behavior mostly within the context of European Politics. Her interests are within the dynamics of mainstream parties and niche parties- how these parties react to each other as well as reasons why voters would choose one over the other.

We study the causal effect of firms' lobbying activities on the misallocation of resources through the distortion of firm size. To address the endogeneity between firms' lobbying expenditure and their size, we propose a new instrument. Specifically, we measure firms' political connections based on the geographic proximity between their headquarter locations and politicians' districts in the U.S., and trace the value of these networks over time by exploiting politicians' assignment to congressional committees. We find that a 10 percent increase in lobbying expenditure leads to a 3 percent gain in revenue. To investigate the macroeconomic consequences of these effects, we develop a heterogeneous firm-level model with endogenous lobbying. Using a novel dataset that we construct, we document new stylized facts about lobbying behavior and use them, including the one from the instrument, to estimate the model. Our counterfactual analysis shows that the return to firms' lobbying activities amounts to a 22 percent decrease in aggregate productivity in the U.S.

In Song Kim's research interests include International Political Economy, Formal and Quantitative Methodology.

One of the defining features of W.E.B. Du Bois’s career in the 1940’s was his return to the NAACP and subsequent participation at the United Nations Conference on International Organization (UNCIO) from April to June of 1945 as a consultant to the United States delegation. This essay traces Du Bois’s transnational democratic thought during his work with the UN and the NAACP in the 1940s and beyond. Pushing against nation-centered framings of Du Bois’s democratic politics that place the problem of racial equality within the nation, I explore how Du Bois used the language of “colonial status” and “colonial peoples” to connect domestic racial hierarchies in the United States to colonial hierarchies abroad. Focusing on unpublished speeches, essays, and correspondence, I argue that Du Bois exploits the conceptual elasticity of terms like “colonialism” and “colony” in order to build a transnational majority on a global scale, constituting what he would call in an unpublished 1935 essay, “a pragmatic program for a dark minority.” The conceptual capaciousness of the term “colony” allows Du Bois to connect disparate forms of domination across boundaries of race, nation, and empire, thus binding colonial and semi-colonial peoples together in a common program of international action. The fruition of these efforts, I argue, is Du Bois’s 1948 petition to the United Nations, An Appeal to the World. Through distinct rhetorical strategies and the appropriation of international legal discourse, Du Bois contests the bifurcation of domestic and international politics and expands the spatial scale of democracy by placing civil rights struggles in imperial context.

Adam Dahl's research and teaching interests are in American political thought, democratic theory, the politics of race and indigeneity, and political theories of empire and colonialism. His first book, Empire of the People: Settler Colonialism and the Foundations of Modern Democratic Thought (University Press of Kansas, 2018), examines the constitutive role of settler colonialism in shaping modern norms of democratic legitimacy. His current project, tentatively titled Transnational Democracy in the Americas, explores the interconnected dynamics of internationalism, anti-imperialism, and transnational citizenship in the American democratic tradition, focusing on the political thought of Ottobah Cugoano, Frederick Douglass, Randolph Bourne, W.E.B. Du Bois, C.L.R. James, and Herman Melville.

The Political Theory Workshop provides a venue for political theory-oriented scholarship broadly construed. Participants include theoretically-inclined members of social science and humanities departments across the University of Michigan, as well as institutions throughout southwest Michigan.

Kenneth Scheve is Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and a Senior Fellow at Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute. His research interests are in the fields of international and comparative political economy and comparative political behavior with particular interest in the behavioral foundations of the politics of economic policymaking.

PEW provides a unique forum for doctoral students and faculty members to share and develop interdisciplinary research in political economy. Political science and economics are intimately linked in both substance and methodology, and the field of political economy is among the most fertile and enduring areas for cross-disciplinary research in the social sciences. Currently, PEW is the sole interdisciplinary workshop at the University of Michigan wholly dedicated to the exploration of current research in political economy, and thus plays a valuable role in fostering connections among the university’s various departments and schools.

The History of the Future of Work: The Debate on the Impact of Technological Change in Historical Perspective (February 20, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/72938 72938-18096966@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 20, 2020 12:00pm
Location: Haven Hall
Organized By: Center for Social Solutions

Current debates about technological change and the future of work have a rich history. In his talk, Bachmann will be exploring some aspects of that history, drawing from his current research on James Boggs and Charles Denby, two black labor activists from Detroit. In the early 1960s, Boggs and Denby published insightful articles about the impact of automation and cybernation on the workers in Detroit's automobile plants and beyond. By teasing out some of the main ideas of their works, Richard will show that Boggs and Denby still have a lot to contribute to current discussions of the future of work.

Richard Bachmann is a first-year graduate student in the Department of History at U-M and a fellow of the Science, Technology, and Society Graduate Certificate Program. His current research focuses on the 1950s/60s debates in the U.S. and Europe about the repercussions of automation and cybernation for the labor market and society. Richard received both his B.A. (2012) and M.A. (2016) in American Studies from Leipzig University, Germany, and spent two semesters at Ohio University's Global Leadership Center in 2011 as a B.A. Plus Fellow.

Ethiopia in Theory, Theory as Memoir, Elleni Centime Zeleke

In the Invention of Africa, Valentine Mudimbe argues that when the social scientist asks about the local in Africa she inevitably ends up situating Africa as a sign of something other than itself. For Mudimbe, the social sciences are a paradigmatic cultural model that leaves the African social scientist with limited choices. Alternatively, Mudimbe advises that if we document the invention of this cultural model we can demonstrate the limits of social studies in Africa as a mode of knowledge production.
In my talk, I try to show how the commitment to science limited the capacity of the Ethiopian student movement of the 1960s and 1970s to describe what Mudimbe calls the ‘chose du texte’ of living and breathing Africans. By highlighting a link between the writings of the Ethiopian student movement and the social conditions of knowledge production I then try to connect the history of the west in Africa to the limitations in the writings of the student movement. This has provided me with a path towards a ‘recit pour soi’ – an account of myself as a path towards personal survival.
Centime Zeleke received her Ph.D. from the Graduate Program in Social and Political Thought at York University (Toronto) in 2016. Her research interests include student movements in the Horn of Africa, 20th-century state formation in Africa, as well as comparative social and political theory.

Elleni’s forthcoming book is titled Ethiopia In Theory: Revolution and Knowledge Production,1964-2016. The hardcover will be published by the Historical-Materialism Book Series at Brill in the fall of 2019. A paperback version will also be published by Haymarket Books in 2020. Ethiopia In Theory asks: what does it mean to write today about the appropriation and indigenisation of Marxist and mainstream social science ideas in an Ethiopian and African context; and, importantly, what does the archive of revolutionary thought in Africa teach us about the practice of critical theory more generally?

Elleni’s work has also appeared in the Journal of NorthEast African Studies and Callaloo: A Journal of African Diaspora Arts and Letters.

Elleni teaches courses on the Horn of Africa, African Political Thought, Critical Theory, and Histories of Capitalism.

Zeleke teaches courses on African Political Thought, Critical Theory, and Histories of Capitalism.

Brian Ikaika Klein is a doctoral candidate in environmental science, policy, and management at the University of California, Berkeley. His research integrates the study of social and ecological conditions and processes to understand resource access and governance in extractive frontier settings across the Global South. Prevailing narratives among policymakers and in popular media consistently portray these spaces as unregulated and chaotic.
Klein challenges these representations by documenting and analyzing the complex governance arrangements that order activities, manage conflict, and determine livelihoods on the extractive frontier. He presents ethnographic and historical evidence from Madagascar to elucidate the emergence, evolution, and endurance of governance institutions in gold mining communities on the island, as well as to interrogate the global, national, and local dynamics by which these institutions are shaped.
At the center of his work is a commitment to producing policy-relevant research informed by interdisciplinary political-ecological analysis interested in achieving more equitable and sustainable development outcomes for smallholder resource extractors and rural communities–in Madagascar, and across sub-Saharan Africa.
Klein’s research has won support from the National Science Foundation, UC Berkeley’s Center for African Studies, and UC Berkeley’s Center for the Study of Law and Society (among other divisions on campus). His agenda for future research comprises extending this analysis to build a broader comparative project on frontier governance; examining the consequences of Chinese state-corporate investments and interventions in Africa’s extractive resource sectors for local institutions and livelihoods; and investigating the ways in which the growth of industries related to climate change mitigation is generating new globally-networked and locally-embedded mineral economies. He is also collaborating with U4/USAID/WWF as an expert consultant on natural resource governance and corruption in Madagascar.
