The history of the Ann Arbor Film Festival is inextricably linked with the history of the University of Michigan. With support from the U-M Bicentennial Committee and working with designer Melissa Gomis, students in Terri Sarris’ Screen Arts course (SAC 304) worked with ephemera from the Festival archives at U-M’s Bentley Historical Library to create a small pop-up exhibition exploring aspects of the Festival's history. UM faculty and former student work exhibited at past fests will loop on monitors in the gallery.

Note: Opening Reception, Tuesday, March 21, 2:00-4:00 pm.

A special thanks to Philip Hallman, Film Studies Field Librarian; Melissa Gomis, Exhibition designer; and Cinda Nofziger, Bentley Historical Library, for their help and input. Made possible with the generous support of the Bicentennial Theme Semester committee.

The Citizen Interaction Design program sponsors an appearance by Laurenellen McCann, a social practice artist and internationally recognized expert in civic engagement and community technology.

Laurenellen McCann will discuss their work in addressing the need to invest more in the “civic” in civic tech — prioritizing community leadership and stewardship in the lifecycle of public interest technology. They will do so from the perspective of non-binary gender identity in an industry that often struggles with diversity and inclusion internally.

Part of U-M’s Bicentennial celebration, the 2017 Carillon Symposium entitled “Resonance & Remembrance: An Interdisciplinary Bell Studies Symposium,” takes place across the University, March 31-April 2. For more information and to register please visit: myumi.ch/Jy0RM

Feld says, “Gregory Bateson’s 1972 essay collection Steps to an Ecology of Mind begins with a series of ‘metalogues,’ thought experiments mapping unruly subjects in science and epistemology in the form of conversations with his daughter, Mary Catherine Bateson. These father-daughter metalogues are exercises in how subjects and objects fuse through the dialectical play of conversational structure. At their best, they exemplify how evolutionary complexities are no less emergent processes than the dialogical attempts to reveal them. Inspired by Bateson’s playful excursions into knowledge production, my foray into the material and affective ‘what-ness’ of bells–their relational ontologies–starts with a series of listening conversations with my daughter, Clochanda, and two of her good friends, Mikhail Bakhtin and Michel Foucault. Together we visit with goats and shepherds, sheep and carnivals, campanile and churches, blacksmiths and carillonneurs, and conclude with a live performance encounter featuring oud virtuoso Rahim AlHaj of Baghdad, Iraq, and the World Peace Bell of Newport, Kentucky.”

WINTER 2017 COMMUNICATION & MEDIA SPEAKER SERIES Science, society, and metaphors for the Anthropocene (April 6, 2017 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/35848 35848-5453617@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 6, 2017 4:00pm
Location: North Quad
Organized By: Communication and Media

This presentation will examine how metaphors interweave science and society as well as their implications for environmental sustainability. I will focus on how we may assess novel metaphors proposed in the environmental sciences, especially in this era of dramatic global change that has been contentiously called the ‘Anthropocene.’

With regards to communication, Dr. Larson has done pioneering work in understanding how using different metaphors and frames to discuss environmental issues may shift public perceptions of the issues. His interdisciplinary approach includes both qualitative and quantitative methods. He is an interdisciplinary scholar, educator, and speaker who explores how conservation-minded people are adapting to the diverse, concurrent, and human-caused ecological changes that Earth is experiencing. He completed an undergrad in biology at U. Guelph, a Master’s in botany at U. Toronto, and an interdisciplinary PhD in science and society at U. California–Santa Barbara, and he am now an Associate Professor in the School of Environment, Resources and Sustainability (SERS) and Associate Dean – Undergraduate Studies in the Faculty of Environment at U. Waterloo, where he advises a team of grad students and post-docs. He have been a visiting scholar at Linköping University (Sweden) and Stellenbosch University (South Africa), and have given nearly 120 lectures, including 20 keynotes and invited plenary lectures, at conferences and workshops in fifteen countries on six continents. I have published over 65 refereed journal articles and book chapters, often in high-impact journals including BioScience, Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment, Global Environmental Change, Science, and Trends in Ecology and Evolution. In 2011 Yale University Press published my first sole-authored book, Metaphors for Environmental Sustainability: Redefining Our Relationship with Nature, which was awarded the 2011 Oravec Research Award by the National Communication Association. My current research focuses on stakeholder perceptions of assisted colonization and invasive species, and it is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and an Early Researcher Award from the Ontario Ministry of Research and Innovation. He has served as Associate Chair of Undergraduate Studies in my department, and on the boards of World Wildlife Fund–Canada, Ontario Nature (as President), and the Invasive Species Centre (as Chair). He is currently on the editorial board of the journal Diversity and Distributions.

Symposium: Center for Network and Storage Enabled Collaborative Computational Science (May 18, 2017 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/40844 40844-8805329@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 18, 2017 1:00pm

Organized By: Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering

Many scientific disciplines are rapidly increasing the size, variety and complexity of data they must work with. As the data grows, scientists are challenged to manage, share and analyze that data and become diverted from a focus on their scientific research to data-access and data-management concerns. Even more problematic is determining how to support many scientists sharing and accessing this ever increasing amount of data.

The Center is working to respond to those challenges broadly. Included in the Center is the NSF-funded OSiRIS project, a collaborative, multi-university venture led by MICDE faculty, and hosted by ARC-TS.

The following questions illustrate some of the focus areas the Center is seeking to address:

What are the best practices for collaboratively working on large, potentially diverse or distributed, datasets?
What tools, technologies and techniques are most effective at addressing the challenges faced by such researchers?
How should data best be stored, organized, indexed and made accessible to improve the ability of scientists to jointly work with one another, especially across the dimensions of time and space?
This symposium is intended to bring together those interested in these questions to share experiences and best practices, and to discuss both challenges and possible solutions that enable scientists to work together on “big, distributed or diverse data”.

Speakers will come from a wide range of research domains, as well as federal funding agencies:
* Shawn McKee, U-M Physics Department, Director of the Center for Network and Storage Enabled Collaborative Computational Science
* Amy Friedlander, Deputy Division Director, Division of Advanced Cyberinfrastructure (CISE/ACI), National Science Foundation.
* Richard Carlson, Program Officer, Advanced Scientific Computing Research (ASCR), Department of Energy

Abstract:

We study the evolution of cooperation in the indefinitely repeated prisoner's dilemma when it is costly for players to adjust their strategy. Our experimental interface allows subjects to design a comprehensive strategy that then selects actions for them in every period. We conduct lab experiments in which subjects can adjust their strategies during a repeated game but may incur a cost for doing so. We find three main results. First, subjects learn to cooperate more when adjustments are costless than when they are costly. Second, subjects make more adjustments to their strategies when adjustments are costless, but they still make adjustments even when they are costly. Finally, we find that cooperative strategies emerge over time when adjustments are costless but not when adjustments are costly. These results highlight that within-game experimentation and learning are critical to the rise of cooperative behavior. We provide simulations based on an evolutionary algorithm to support these results.

Social, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Rethinking the Benefits of Youth Employment Programs: The Heterogeneous Effects of Summer Jobs (September 18, 2017 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/43405 43405-9759935@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 18, 2017 3:30pm
Location: North Quad
Organized By: Department of Economics

This paper reports the results of two randomized field experiments, each offering different populations of youth a supported summer job in Chicago. In both experiments, the program dramatically reduces violent-crime arrests, even after the summer. It does so without improving employment, schooling, or other types of crime; if anything, property crime increases over 2-3 post-program years. To explore mechanisms, we implement a machine learning method that predicts treatment heterogeneity using observables. The method identifies a subgroup of youth with positive employment impacts, whose characteristics differ from the disconnected youth served in most employment programs. We find that employment benefiters commit more property crime than their control counterparts, and non-benefiters also show a decline in violent crime. These results do not seem consistent with typical theory about improved human capital and better labor market opportunities creating a higher opportunity cost of crime, or even with the idea that these programs just keep youth busy. We discuss several alternative mechanisms, concluding that brief youth employment programs can generate substantively important behavioral change, but for different outcomes, different youth, and different reasons than those most often considered in the literature.

Social, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Multidimensional Bargaining and Inventory Risk in Supply Chains: An Experimental Study (September 25, 2017 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/43408 43408-9759939@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, September 25, 2017 3:30pm

Organized By: Department of Economics

Abstract:

We study the impact of multidimensional bargaining and the location of inventory risk on the performance of a two-stage supply chain. We conduct a controlled human-subjects experiment where a retailer and supplier either interact through ultimatum offers or dynamically bargain over contract terms, including a wholesale price and, potentially, an order quantity. We also manipulate whether the risk associated with unsold inventory lies with the retailer or the supplier or is endogenously determined in the bargaining process. One key insight is that supply chain efficiency is significantly higher when the order quantity is included in the negotiation and that, contrary to the normative theory, this leads to a Pareto improvement whereby both the supplier and retailer earn higher profits. A second important result, also counter to the normative theory, is that the party incurring the cost of unsold inventory always earns a lower profit than their counterpart, regardless of the bargaining environment or inventory risk location. To explain these data, we posit that retailers and suppliers are affected by an anchoring bias and demonstrate that it can explain many of our results.

BeTroit: Film Screening, Performance, Q&A
A Documentary about BeTroit by Philip Halver; Olad Aden, Venice Session and young artists in person for Q & A after the screening.

September 25th, 2017 | 8pm
2435 North Quad

The cities of Berlin and Detroit are full of amazing artists. Very much in the same way in which Berlin was regarded as the subcultural capital of the world some 15 or 20 years ago, when artists were flocking to it because of affordable space, bringing with them an incredible energy and of course many talents and abilities, you can feel a certain kind of energy when you travel to Detroit these days. It is rough and at the same time interesting and beautiful. Grimy and at the same time elegant and free. It is a place where devastation is still visible alongside new opportunities. Opportunities for artists, activists and resistance movements to help turn the city into the magnificent place it could be in order to make things better for all of its residents.

From September 11th to September 20th, 2016 artists from Berlin and Detroit, poets, emcees, singer/songwriters, beat producers, came together in Detroit in order to get to know one another and to create. During that period, they also visited the University of Michigan and ran workshops and Q&A sessions with our students. In June of 2017, they got back together, this time in Berlin in order to present what had been created in Detroit, including an album, music videos, and a documentary about the visit. For more information, please visit the project website at http://be-troit.com/, and the Be-Troit blog at http://gangway.de/en/betroit-blog-jugendaustausch-berlin-detroit-vom-11-24-9-2016/; a trailer for the documentary is at https://vimeo.com/215179507.

Now a delegation returns to present the amazing work that came out of this unique collaboration between Berlin- and Detroit-based artists. Please join us for a screening of Philip Halver’s inspiring documentary, artist performances, and a Q&A with BeTroit participants.

This event is free and open to the public.

Location: North Quad
Organized By: School of Information

In conjunction with the UMSI Bicentennial Symposium on Friday, October 6, UMSI presents a special screening of a documentary film produced and self-funded by UMSI assistant professor Joyojeet Pal.

"For the Love of a Man follows" fans of 'superstar' Rajnikanth, whose fandom often becomes integral to their identities and those of people around them. The visual ethic of fandom and star mimicry reveal a form of star worship that is unique to Indian cinema culture. The lives of fans and their families open us to themes of brotherhood, aspiration, political affiliation, or even just means of being noticed. From bankruptcies to reformations from lives of crime, the lives of the fans offer stories that range from the heroic to the horrific, all in a day's work of turning a film star into a deity.

For the Love of a Man premiered at the Venice Film Festival in September 2015, and was shown at the Mumbai and Dubai Film Festivals of 2015.

Organized By: Language Resource Center

As global demands for ever-higher proficiency outcomes continue to rise, and local resources for domestic instruction diminish, language educators strive to create environments and curricula that can produce proficient students within economic and pedagogical constraints. Drawing on the experience of the National Language Flagship model and research in intensive instruction, this paper presents a model of instruction that incorporates standards-based reverse curricular design, flipped classroom, and a multi-tiered instruction/assessment plan that attempts to address issues of time/budgetary constraints and proficiency. Examples of in-class and out-of-class materials will be provided, as well as samples of student outcomes from this kind of curriculum.

Characterizing and Quantifying Public Conversations Online (October 30, 2017 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/46042 46042-10356049@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 30, 2017 3:30pm
Location: North Quad
Organized By: School of Information

Online public conversations, which feature open participation and interactions between strangers, are increasing in their frequency and societal importance. Digital platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit face challenges in improving these conversations, from designing user interfaces to stimulating participation and moderating or prioritizing content. Perhaps the most important challenge is deciding which kinds of conversations are most valuable to people and how the value generated can be practically measured at large scale and across a variety of use-cases.

In this talk Facebook social scientist Sean Taylor will present a range of approaches to measuring and characterizing online public conversations. In the course of product research at Facebook, they have applied machine learning, human annotation, surveys, network analysis, and ethnographic research in order to gain a deeper understanding of the space of public conversations and to try to pin down how and when they create value for the participants. He discusses how ongoing advancements in measurement technology have helped improve Facebook products, and what they have learned about human behavior in the process of studying these social systems.

About the Speaker: Sean J. Taylor is a computational social scientist on Facebook’s Data Science team. Prior to Facebook, he earned his PhD in Information Systems from NYU’s Stern School of Business. He specializes in using machine learning methods and randomized experiments for measurement, prediction, and policy decisions. Sean’s research ranges from studying online social influence, viral marketing, and social networks to measuring how sports fans behave and the impact of data science on decision making in organizations. He is also an avid engineer who enjoys putting academic research into practice by building tools and services like new kinds of prediction markets and automated forecasting systems.

***
The Social, Behavioral and Experimental Economics lecture series is sponsored by the School of Information, the Ross School of Business and the Department of Economics. Speakers from U.S. and international universities present their research at weekly seminars during the 2017-2018 academic year.

Location: North Quad
Organized By: Communication and Media

Mobile communication technologies are often hailed in the popular press and public policy as a means of “giving voice to the voiceless.” Behind the praise are determinist beliefs about technology as a gateway to opportunity, voice as a metaphor for agency and self-representation, and voicelessness as a stable and natural category. In this talk, based on her new book Giving Voice: Mobile Communication, Disability, and Inequality (MIT Press, 2017), Dr. Meryl Alper offers a new angle on these established critiques through a qualitative study of individuals with significant communication disabilities who use mobile devices for synthetic speech output. Alper finds that despite widespread claims to empowerment, these tools are still subject to disempowering structural inequalities. Culture, laws, institutions, and even technology itself can reinforce disparities among those with disabilities across class, race, ethnicity, and gender. Alper argues that voice is an overused and imprecise metaphor in media and communication studies, one that abstracts, obscures, and oversimplifies the human experience of disability. She will discuss implications of her research for our rapidly changing media ecology and political environment, where the question is not only which voices get to speak, but also who is thought to have a voice to speak with in the first place.

Location: North Quad
Organized By: Center for Armenian Studies

"Coming Full Circle" is a collective version of three documentaries produced by "Versus" studio on the Great Repatriation of Armenians (1946-49): "My Unfamiliar Fatherland" (2012), "Oh, Fatherland, Cold and Sweet" (2016), "The Last Dream or Game Over" (2017). "Coming Full Circle" provides a unique perspective on the experiences of Armenian immigrants from the Middle East, Europe and America to the Soviet Union. Enthusiastic about their return to Soviet Armenia, these people often experienced exclusion and persecutions during the Cold War periods of Stalinism, the Khrushchev thaw and the Brezhnev stagnation. Based on more than one hundred oral interviews and eyewitness accounts of repatriation conducted in Armenia, US, France, Russia and Lebanon, as well as newsreels, photos, and numerous historical documents, this documentary bears witness to the lived experiences of the repatriates beyond the Iron Curtain.

Free and open to public.

INTERACTIVE DEMONSTRATION
November 9, 2017
2:30 - 6:00 PM
2435 North Quad
For generations, the Fabian family from Oaxaca, Mexico has created alebrijes, whimsical wooden figurines. The pieces are inspired by nature and archaeology. The Fabian family uses traditional carving techniques combined with pre-hispanic design motifs from the ancient settlement outside their village of San Martin Tilcajete. Please join us for a live and interactive demonstration of woodcarving and painting techniques. The audience is invited to paint their own pieces with help from the artisans, ask questions, and see the artists in action.

WOODCARVING EXHIBIT
November 10, 2017, 3:00 – 8:00 PM
Michigan League, Kalamazoo Room
Focusing on the intersection between art and archaeology, this exhibit features traditional Oaxacan woodcarvings called alebrijes. These pieces are the product of a collaboration between the community of San Martin Tilcajete and University of Michigan researchers. The Fabian family assisted in the excavation and analysis of archaeological artifacts from the site in their village. They have drawn inspiration from this experience to create a series of alebrijes celebrating the pre-hispanic design motifs found on artifacts recovered from ancient Zapotec houses. Through their pieces, they combine traditional woodcarving techniques with ancient motifs in an innovative celebration of contemporary, historical, and ancient art from Oaxaca, Mexico.

Social, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): What Is the Long-Run Causal Relationship between Wealth and Psychological Well-being? (November 13, 2017 3:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/43410 43410-9759941@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 13, 2017 3:30pm
Location: North Quad
Organized By: Department of Economics

Abstract:

There is a positive association between income and psychological well-being that diminishes in strength as income rises, but the causal pathways behind this association remain imperfectly understood. We surveyed a large sample of Swedish lottery players and analyzed the data following pre-registered procedures. Comparisons of large-prize winners (typical prize range: $100K - $800K) to matched controls selected from the same lottery populations allow us to make credible causal inferences about the long-run effects of wealth. For two evaluative measures of well-being – Overall Life Satisfaction and Financial Life Satisfaction – we find clear evidence of positive effects that survive multiple-hypothesis corrections and persist well over a decade after winning the lottery. The estimated treatment effects on Happiness and Mental Health are significantly smaller and not statistically different from zero.

In recent years, South Asian Americans or desis, as they are colloquially known, seem to be making inroads into U.S. national consciousness as pop-culture icons, cultural commentators and media content creators. However, there also remains plenty of evidence that historical legacies of racism, Orientalism, and colonialism continue to shape mainstream imaginations about South Asian Americans as characters, as creative professionals, as audiences, and as a cultural group. In this presentation, I draw on the research for my current book project, Race and Ethnicity in U.S. Media Industries, and offer a combination of institutional, textual and discursive analyses of trade and consumer reports, “diversity” initiatives, entertainment media texts, multicultural advertising and interviews of actors and writers. I locate the increased visibility of South Asian Americans in the U.S. media within the ongoing industry investment in notions of “diversity” and “multicultural consumers.” I contend that dominant industry narratives about “diversity” sidestep the issues of institutional and structural racism as well as problematic narratives about race and difference in media representations and storytelling. I argue that the ongoing rebranding of U.S. media capital by incorporating ethnicity and immigrant culture into its core business outlook is shaped by, and in turn shaping, what I call the culture of “screening desis.” I consider screening in three ways—as an interactive interface (social media), a projection of images (diverse representations across media) and as a filter that regulates (the policing of desi bodies on the screen and behind it).

High Stakes Culture: What Does It Mean to Take a Knee? (January 23, 2018 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/47604 47604-10963376@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, January 23, 2018 5:30pm
Location: North Quad
Organized By: Institute for the Humanities

In the last few months a series of “culture wars” have been ignited across the country. Activists from all points of the political spectrum, even the President of the United States himself, are turning to beloved cultural objects to stake a claim for their differing beliefs in a politically fraught moment. Black athletes are taking a knee. Anti-immigration voters are rallying for a wall. Long-standing Confederate monuments are coming down.

What is at stake in the ways we understand culture and cultural conflict? High Stakes Culture is a new series, presented by the Institute for the Humanities and the Humanities Collaboratory, that brings humanities perspectives to bear on current debates. Join us as we ask: How and why does culture matter so much now?

Join the conversation as humanities scholars Angela Dillard (Afroamerican and African studies and Residential College), Matthew Countryman (history and American culture), Mark Clague (music), and Kristin Hass (American culture) tackle these questions and others you might have about high stakesculture now.

When did sports and patriotism become so deeply linked?
Has the flag always been viewed as sacred and purely a symbol of the armed forces?
Where did the national anthem come from, and have people always stood when it is played?
Who gets to decide what symbols deserve respect and what counts as a gesture of respect?
