Globalization, migration, sustainable development are some of the key issues in today’s world and they appear as recurring keywords in cultural debates. The role played by languages in all of these areas, however, is often underestimated, with little attention paid to how translation and interpreting can support social cohesion and social justice in increasingly multilingual communities. Drawing on the experience of working with different constituencies, from migrant artists in the US and Australia to health specialists in Namibia and Zambia, this talk will draw attention to translation as a constitutive practice of our everyday lives and to translation awareness as a vital "citizenship skill."

Loredana Polezzi is Professor of Translation Studies in the School of Modern Languages, Cardiff University, and President of the International Association for Translation and Intercultural Studies (IATIS). Her work focuses on how geographical and social mobilities are connected to the theories and practices of translation, self-translation and multilingualism. With Rita Wilson, she is co-editor of leading international journal The Translator.

This event kicks off the annual Translate-a-thon on October 18-19 coordinated by the Language Resource Center and co-sponsored by the Department of Comparative Literature. For more information on Translate-a-thon 2019, and to register, see http://myumi.ch/J2V8B

Abstract

This paper analyzes a two-person, two-stage model of sequential exploration, where both information and payoff externalities exist, and tests the derived hypotheses in the laboratory. We theoretically show that even when agents are self-interested and perfectly rational, the information externality induces an encouragement effect: a positive effect of first-player exploration on the optimality of the second-player exploring as well. When agents have other-regarding preferences and imperfectly optimize, the encouragement effect is strongest. The explorative nature of the game raises the expected surplus compared to a payoff equivalent public goods game. We empirically confirm our main theoretical predictions using a novel experimental paradigm. Our findings are relevant for motivating and managing groups and teams innovating not only for private but also, and especially so, for public goods.

Social, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Equity Concerns are Narrowly Framed (October 28, 2019 11:45am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68303 68303-17043871@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, October 28, 2019 11:45am
Location: North Quad
Organized By: Department of Economics

Abstract
We show that individuals narrowly bracket their equity concerns. Across six experiments including 2,360 subjects, individuals equalize components of payoffs rather than overall payoffs. When earnings are comprised of “small tokens” worth 1 cent and “large tokens” worth 2 cents, subjects frequently equalize the distribution of small (or large) tokens rather than equalizing total earnings. When payoffs are comprised of time and money, subjects similarly equalize the distribution of time (or money) rather than total payoffs. In addition, subjects are more likely to equalize time than money. These findings can help explain a variety of behavioral phenomena including the structure of social insurance programs, patterns of public good provision, and why transactions that turn money into time are often deemed repugnant.

Abstract:

Facial recognition systems are increasingly common components of smartphones and other consumer digital devices. These technologies enable animated video-sharing applications, such as Apple’s animoji and memoji, Facebook Messenger’s masks and filters and Samsung’s AR Emoji. Such animations serve as technical phenomena translating moments of affective and emotional expression into mediated, trackable, and socially legible forms across a variety of social media platforms.

Through technical and historical analysis of these digital artifacts, the talk will explore the ways facial recognition systems classify and categorize racial identities in human faces in relation to emotional expression. Drawing on the longer history of discredited pseudosciences such as phrenology, the paper considers the dangers of both racializing logics as part of these systems of classification, and of how social media data regarding emotional expression gathered through these systems can be used to reinforce systems of oppression and discrimination.

Social, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Complexity and shrouded attributes in incentive schemes: The case of the ratchet effect (November 4, 2019 11:45am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68614 68614-17105375@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 4, 2019 11:45am

Abstract

This paper shows that the impact of workplace incentive schemes can depend on the complexity of the scheme, and also the cognitive ability of the worker population, because these matter for whether certain features of the scheme are shrouded attributes. Specifically, the findings indicate that complexity and bounded rationality can cause workers to overlook a dynamic aspect of workplace incentive contracts that would otherwise create perverse incentives to reduce effort, the so-called ratchet effect. The findings are based on a combination of large-scale, long-term field experiments within a warehouse, online experiments conducted with the same worker population, and online experiments conducted with workers on Amazon Mechanical Turk. The field experiments find only a weak ratchet effect. The online experiments build the case that for many workers, particularly those with lower cognitive ability, ratchet effects may be weak because in the relatively complex scheme, the dynamic aspect of incentives is a shrouded attribute. Making the scheme simpler causes the ratchet effect to emerge. The evidence suggests that there may be an optimal degree of complexity that allows firms to harness static incentives while avoiding perverse dynamic incentives. A systematic analysis of what types of changes to the contract make the ratchet effect stronger or weaker provides findings with implications for incentive design as well as shedding light on the nature of complexity in general.

What would you do with an idea and $10,000?

The Capstone Experience at the Barger Leadership Institute (BLI) supports undergraduate students in designing and implementing evidence-based, collaborative projects that seek to bring about small (and big) wins for the complex, ambiguous problems that exist in our deeply interconnected world.

Join us at one of the sessions to learn about Capstone and meet like-minded students with ideas and skills to collaborate with. Teams, individuals, BLI members or those just interested in learning more are all welcome! Each session is broken into two parts: first, learn about the Capstone Experience; second, engage in a speed-dating exercise to meet other undergraduates interested in building a team.

This event is perfect for: people who want to learn more about the Capstone Experience; people who have an idea or project but need partners; people who have a passion but not a project; people who have skills that would benefit a team but no team.

Question? Reach out to BLI Academic Program Manager Fatema Haque, haque@umich

When an earthquake happens in California today, residents may look to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) for online maps that show the quake's epicenter, turn to Twitter for government bulletins and the latest news, check Facebook for updates fromfriends and family, and hope to count on help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). This information order articulates a particular epistemic experience of earthquake for some Americans.

In this talk, I discuss how people produce and circulate information in earthquake publics using a comparative historical lens. I analyze the institutions, policies, and technologies that shape today's post-disaster information landscape, paying close attention to not only the circulationof knowledge, but also to the production of ignorance.

Social, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Using micro-randomized trials to study processes underlying response to mobile health interventions (November 18, 2019 11:45am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68615 68615-17105376@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, November 18, 2019 11:45am

Abstract

Micro-randomized trials (MRTs) are a new experimental design for optimizing just-in-time adaptive interventions. In addition to informing intervention design, however, MRTs can also provide insights into the underlying psychosocial processes that mediate intervention response. In this talk, I will describe some of the recent findings from the HeartSteps project which show that mHealth interventions provided in the exact same way (in our case, as push notifications suggesting to individuals how they can be active in their current context) can have different dynamics, suggesting that the response to them is mediated by different underlying processes. I suggest that, in addition to supporting intervention design, MRTs can be a powerful tool for studying human behavior in a granular way in the midst of messiness of day-to-day life.

Bio

Predrag "Pedja" Klasnja is an Assistant Professor in the School of Information at the University of Michigan. He works at the intersection of human-computer interaction and behavioral science, and he studies how mobile technologies can help individuals make and sustain health-protective lifestyle changes. He is particularly interested in the design and evaluation of just-in-time adaptive interventions, technologies that continuously adapt their functioning to provide optimal support to individuals as their needs and circumstances change.

This workshop will help early graduate student writers identify critical practices and strategies to enhance their writing and build an effective approach to graduate writing. We’ll talk about becoming more strategic readers and examine patterns of inquiry across disciplines moving from the practice of asking good questions to the importance of topic construction. We will also talk about the variety of communication forms graduate writing can take. The workshop will conclude by examining our writing routines and finding ways to expand our own writing process to succeed in graduate school. Lunch will be provided.

Social, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Primate patience: from foraging to cooperation (December 2, 2019 11:45am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68616 68616-17105377@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, December 2, 2019 11:45am

Abstract

Intertemporal choices involving tradeoffs between benefits and time costs are ubiquitous in both human and animal lives. Several proposals argue that nonhumans are stuck in the ‘now’, whereas future-orienting cognition allows humans to think ahead and make adaptive decisions. What is the ultimate function of high levels of patience, and why do such abilities emerge? I will argue that a suite of decision-making capacities including inter-temporal choice and future planning evolved in the context of foraging behaviors, and vary with ecological complexity across species. Then, I will examine how these capacities for self-control can be generalized from foraging contexts to solve new but evolutionarily-important problems, like cooking food. Finally, I will present work testing the hypothesis that low levels of self-control constrain cooperation in primates, and therefore may explain human-unique forms of ultra-sociality.

With this presentation, I explicate the possibilities of synthesizing theories and methods from the disciplines of feminism, critical race, media studies, anthropology, among others in putting forth a critical study of intersectional technoculture. Through ethnographic examples, I demarcate a framework for studying the intersectional development of technological artifacts and systems—a research program that aims at contributing to a greater understanding of the cultural production and social processes involved in digital and technological culture. Using gaming as the glue that binds this project, I put forth intersectional tech as a framework to make sense of the visual, textual, and oral engagements of marginalized users, exploring the complexities in which they create, produce, and sustain their practices. Gaming, as a medium often outside conversations on Blackness and digital praxis, is one that is becoming more visible, viable, and legible in making sense of Black technoculture. Intersectional tech implores us to make visible the force of discursive practices that position practices within (dis)orderly social hierarchies and arrangements. The explicit formulations of the normative order are sometimes in disagreement with the concrete human condition as well as inconsistent with the consumption and production practices that constitute Black digital labor. It is, in fact, these practices that inform the theoretical underpinnings of Black performances, cultural production, exploited labor, and resistance strategies inside oppressive technological structures that Black users reside.
Engaging intersectionality across transmediated platforms reveals a significant moment of critiquing narratives, creating content, and controlling narratives. The aftermath of Mike Brown’s death in 2014, for instance, revealed the power of this innovative engagement that the once-invisible could now actively engage, participate, and produce content in hypervisible ways. In the context of #BlackLivesMatter, the combination of the textual and the visual ignited not only a movement, but a proclamation of reclaiming narratives and identities across media and platforms - from #BlackLivesMatter to Black-ish to “The Breakfast Club.” It is important to examine the everydayness of mediated, intersectional, counterpublics to examine Black oral, visual, and textual culture in digital spaces and how this manifests within gaming culture. The transmediated nature of contemporary gaming communities affords the possibility of reframing traditional narratives, controlling and producing content, sustaining Black cultural production.

Social, Behavioral & Experimental Economics (SBEE): Borrowing to Save? The Impact of Automatic Enrollment on Debt (December 9, 2019 11:45am) https://events.umich.edu/event/68617 68617-17105383@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, December 9, 2019 11:45am

Abstract

Does automatic enrollment into a retirement plan increase borrowing outside the plan? We study a natural experiment created when the U.S. Army began automatically enrolling newly hired civilian employees into the Thrift Savings Plan. Four years after hire, automatic enrollment causes no significant change in credit scores (point estimate 0.001 standard deviations) or debt balances excluding auto loans and first mortgages (point estimate -0.6% of annual salary). We also find no significant increase in auto loan and first mortgage balances in our main regression specification, although the estimated increases in these categories are economically and statistically significant in alternative specifications.

Location: North Quad
Organized By: Communication and Media

Since the introduction of smartphones in 2007 and tablets in 2010, the nature of children’s media use has changed dramatically. Given the limitations of parent-report measures for assessing the intermittent, interactive, and immersive modern media experiences, Dr. Radesky’s research has attempted to develop novel methods for assessing media use within the family context. Dr. Radesky will review her initial research examining parent mobile device use in public settings and through videorecorded interactions; discuss development of novel passive sensing methods for assessing the daily patterns of family mobile device use; and present results from content coding and data privacy analysis. Implications for future research and clinical recommendations will be discussed.

Dr. Radesky is an Assistant Professor of Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics at the University of Michigan Medical School. She received her M.D. from Harvard Medical School, trained in Pediatrics at Seattle Children’s Hospital, and completed subspecialty training in Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center. Her NIH-funded research examines parent smartphone use and parent-child interaction, as well as how child self-regulation, mobile device use, and interactive media content interact through the preschool years. She was the lead author of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) guidelines about media use by young children in 2016. Dr. Radesky also sees patients in Developmental Behavioral Pediatric Clinic at the University of Michigan C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Ypsilanti Health Center, where her clinical work focuses on autism, traumatic stress, ADHD, and self-regulation.

On Black Technoculture (January 23, 2020 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/71326 71326-17817094@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 23, 2020 12:00pm

Organized By: Digital Studies Institute

Where does Blackness manifest In the ideology of Western technoculture? Technoculture is the American mythos (Dinerstein 2006) and ideology; a belief system powering the coercive, political, and carceral relations between culture and technology. Once enslaved, historically disenfranchised, never deemed literate, Blackness is understood as the object of Western technical and civilizational practices. This presentation is a critical intervention for internet research and science and technology studies (STS), reorienting Western technoculture’s practices of “race-as-technology” (Chun 2009) to visualize Blackness as technological subjects rather than as “things”. Hence, Black technoculture. Utilizing critical technocultural discourse analysis (Brock 2018), Afro-optimism, and libidinal economic theory, this presentation employs Black Twitter as an exemplar of Black cyberculture: digital practice and artifacts informed by a Black aesthetic.

André Brock is an associate professor of media studies at Georgia Tech. His scholarship examines racial representations in videogames, black women and weblogs, whiteness, blackness, and digital technoculture, as well as innovative and groundbreaking research on Black Twitter. His forthcoming book titled Distributed Blackness: African American Cybercultures will be published with NYU Press in February 2020, offering an innovative approach to understanding Black everyday lives mediated by digital technologies.

Free and open to the public, no RSVP required.

FOR REMOTE PARTICIPANTS: Video from this talk will be streamed live. For video, during the event visit this URL: http://umsi.info/black

Healthcare: A WeListen Staff Discussion (February 5, 2020 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/71610 71610-17844814@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, February 5, 2020 11:00am
Location: North Quad
Organized By: WeListen Staff

This WeListen session is open to all UM staff members. All voices and views are welcome and lunch will be provided!

RSVP here: http://bit.ly/WLFebruary

We will discuss Healthcare by learning about policies put forth by the Democratic and Republican parties, and examining systems in other countries. We'll also consider the impact of lobbyists on prescription drug costs, and discuss plans and terminology being used by 2020 presidential candidates.

Our aim is to bring liberals, conservatives, libertarians- everyone across the political spectrum- together for constructive conversation. The goal of WeListen discussions is not to debate or argue, but to understand the views and values of others and to learn from their perspectives. The session will begin with a brief content presentation to provide a basic understanding of the topic. No specific level of knowledge is required to participate in WeListen discussions.

By participating in WeListen sessions, staff members will:
- Expand understanding of a prominent political topic
- Practice discussing difficult topics with others,
- Gain openness to new ideas and perspectives,
- Learn to productively challenge an idea, and
- Form a sense of community among fellow staff members.

Questions? Email us at welistenstaff@umich.edu.

This event is supported by the WeListen Staff Series planning committee with members from the Ginsberg Center, the International Institute and LSA Psychology.

Although the overwhelming majority of Egyptian Jewry left the country in waves from 1948 to 1967, their presence continues to be noticeable in Egyptian culture. During the second half of the twentieth century, unfavorable portrayals of Jews appeared in a period of time marked by turmoil and conflict between Egypt and the nascent state of Israel. Representations of Jews in contemporary Egyptian literary works, however, mark a shift from portrayals influenced by the Arab-Israeli conflict which internalized negative Jewish stereotypes. Twenty-first century novelistic productions, however, invoked Jewish portrayals to shape Egypt as a multiethnic and multicultural society of which Jews were an integral part.

The political theorist Hannah Arendt once said that “A people that no longer can believe anything cannot make up its own mind. It is deprived not only of its capacity to act but also of its capacity to think and to judge. And with such a people you can then do what you please.” (Interview, New York Review of Books, October 26, 1978). Arendt’s well-known revisionist account of propaganda shifted the focus away from “indoctrination” and toward the role of cynicism and quiescence in sustaining authoritarianism. If uncertainty becomes a systemic feature of our media systems, we are likely to lose trust—in each other, in the institutions that inform and represent us, and, ultimately, in the democratic process. In the long term, the general expectation that little of what is available online can be trusted may contribute to an attitudinal spiral that “anything goes”—a new culture of indeterminacy that may further diminish individuals’ sense of accountability for the information they share. At the elite level, such a culture may also enable deceitful politicians to claim that nothing can be proved in a public sphere characterized by chaos, distrust, and cynicism. New opportunities will emerge for politicians to campaign on promises to restore “order” and “certainty” through illiberal policies curtailing free speech and other civil rights. How should communication researchers respond to these challenges?

Andrew Chadwick is Professor of Political Communication in the Department of Communication and Media at Loughborough University, where he is also the founding Director of the Online Civic Culture Centre (O3C). His latest book is The Hybrid Media System: Politics and Power (OUP, Second Edition). His next book is Social Media and the Future of Democracy (OUP) www.andrewchadwick.com

How might we think about and address the kinds of life that emerge in the wastescapes of cities? In this talk I attend to the social and natural life of Mumbai’s anthropogenic sea. Today, Mumbai’s sea is an uneasy gathering of urban, climactic and agrarian processes. As sewage, fish, birds, coral, and algae interact in dynamic relations, how are fishers, amateur naturalists and scientists negotiating the ambivalent ecologies of the Anthroposea. By attending to their practices, this talk explores emergent ways of thinking, knowing and acting in muddy waters.

Bio: Nikhil Anand is Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. His research focuses on the political ecology of cities, read through the different lives of water. His award winning book, Hydraulic City, focuses on the everyday ways in which cities and citizens are made through the everyday management of water infrastructure in Mumbai. With Hannah Appel and Akhil Gupta, Dr. Anand is also co-editor of The Promise of Infrastructure, which focuses on how infrastructure provides a generative ground to theorize time and politics. Dr. Anand's new research project, The Urban Sea, attends to the ways coastal cities are actively constituted through social and natural relationships with the sea. Dr. Anand has a Masters in Environmental Science from Yale University and a PhD in Anthropology from Stanford University

The specter of extinction looms large in the late-modern Western psyche. As a cultural "imaginary," extinction is perhaps the distinctive post-WWII anxiety. Since the 1950s, visions of nuclear annihilation, mass famine, environmental collapse, biodiversity loss, and other self-inflicted catastrophes have haunted literature, art, film, popular media, and political discourse as central preoccupations. Indeed, one of the main imagined consequences of the ongoing climate crisis is the production of a "Sixth Extinction"--a collapse of biological diversity that may rival the great mass extinctions of the geological past and threaten the future of human civilization.

Not coincidentally, the second half of the 20th century also saw a dramatic revival among geologists and paleontologists of theories involving catastrophic mass extinctions as central agents in the history of life. This talk will explore the interpenetration of these scientific and cultural discourses during the 20th century. In particular, I will argue that our current cultural fascination with the so-called Anthropocene is a direct consequence of the fusion of the geological and the eschatological meanings of extinction: extinction thinking may in fact be the bridge between the deep past and imagined future of our species and our planet.

David Sepkoski is the Thomas M. Siebel Chair in History of Science and Professor in the Department of History at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. He has published widely on histories of biology, the earth and environmental sciences, and data. His most recent book is Catastrophic Thinking: Extinction and the Value of Diversity from Darwin to the Anthropocene.

Organized By: Center for Southeast Asian Studies

When Shakespeare Must Die, a Thai film adaptation of Macbeth is banned by the Thai government as a threat to national security, the film’s producer treks through the corridors of power to un-ban his Shakespearean horror movie–from the Cultural ministry to the Senate and the National Human Rights Commission, all the way to the Administrative Court where he is suing the government for abuse of power. Wherever he went, amidst political upheaval, his director followed with a camera. The resulting reality cinema is the living story of a struggle for justice and human dignity, for freedom of expression, which Thai filmmakers do not have. A dark cinematic record of democracy in action, in all its farcical, obscene and heartbreaking details.
