Join us for a morning of presentations and conversations on current research projects happening throughout the University Library. As those invested in the production and preservation of knowledge, we work with a variety of research methods, including investigation, evaluation, experimentation, and careful study. Often, these projects take us beyond the day-to-day aspects of our jobs, encouraging us to solve unique problems and discover new possibilities.

Emergent Research events are aimed at better understanding the various types of research undertaken across campus, particularly as they relate to library services and support, opportunities for collaboration, data management and preservation, and beyond.

The 1967 Detroit rebellion was a pivotal event in the history of the Motor City. While Ann Arbor may seem far removed from Detroit, the themes of 1967—housing segregation, media bias, student activism, and police violence—resonated here as well.

This exhibit, on display in the Hatcher Graduate Library North lobby through September 15, 2017, highlights the extensive archival resources of the Bentley Historical Library and the U-M Library’s Labadie Collection. These materials place the rebellion in the context of 1960s activism against racism and inequality in Detroit and Ann Arbor, and illustrate the significance and range of press coverage.

The University of Michigan was founded in 1817 as a public institution, a concept for which there were few models. What makes a university public? What should it look like? Whom should it serve? Who should have access to its resources, and where should those resources come from?

This exhibit explores how students, faculty, staff, politicians, and citizens have attempted to answer these questions. These stories invite us to imagine U-M's future as a public university based on what we know about its past.

Highlighting manuscripts and early printed books from the Special Collections Library, the exhibit commemorates the 500th anniversary of a pivotal transformation in world history. In 1517, Martin Luther, a professor of theology and a monk, published his scathing critique of indulgences, a church practice that allowed Christians to buy off time from suffering for one’s sins in the afterlife.

Issued in the provincial town of Wittenberg, Luther's call for academic debate and reform unleashed a series of events that led to the break-up of Latin Christianity. The Reformations that followed forever altered the lives of those in early modern Europe and beyond.

The late medieval German lands teemed with innovation. Novel forms of piety emerged, the demand for practical learning grew, more universities competed for students, and wealth from both trade and mining transformed social relations. The dissemination of texts and ideas on an industrial scale via the printing press reshaped communication, knowledge, and belief. In this context, reform—the renewal of a lost standard of the past in the present—became a battle-cry for religious, economic, and political change.

Reforming the Word: Martin Luther in Context (September 8, 2017 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/42280 42280-9593316@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 8, 2017 8:30am
Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: University Library

Join the exhibit creators for a ribbon cutting and a short tour of "Forever Unfinished: Making and Remaking a Public University."

Exhibit team: Jonathan Farr, Nora Krinitsky, Michelle McClellan, Gregory Parker, Emily Price, Kate Silbert

This LSA Bicentennial Theme Semester event is presented with support from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office. Additional support provided by the Department of History and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

Nuclear weapons are an undeniable reality of our times. Nagasaki Atomic History and the Present (NAHP) is an educational website that seeks to have American students be able to imagine and realize what the effects of a nuclear weapon are/were/would be on people. NAHP is the result of over six years of small-group collaborations between students, atomic bombing survivors, citizens, NGOs, librarians, audio-visual technicians, professors, and universities around the world.

In this talk, Aleksandr Sklyar highlights the post-production work that followed the original filming of the video interviews with atomic bombing survivors in Nagasaki in summer 2010. This talk will be of interest to students and faculty conceiving public digital scholarship projects. It will give you a chance to reflect and prepare for the steps involved in preparing a final product after you have completed the collection of raw audiovisual material.

Aleksandr Sklyar is a Ph.D. candidate in Sociocultural Anthropology at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Alex is also one of the creators of NAHP. Alex’s doctoral work looks at family decisions following the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. He writes about food, home, material and social pollution, everyday nuclear worlds, and the permeation of the abnormal into the everyday.

During the early 1970s, the two large countries at either end of the Pacific shaped the restless world in their own ways. China was moving full steam ahead on the Cultural Revolution. The U.S. was grappling with a series of domestic and international problems including the Vietnam War. Mired in ideological opposition, U.S.-China relations had been hostile since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. Getting these Cold War foes to reconnect with each other looked like a mission impossible. Curiously, Ping-Pong emerged to play an important role in bringing U.S.-China relations to rapprochement in the early 1970s and finally to normalization in 1979.

The historically significant Ping-Pong exchanges between China and the U.S. held in 1971 and 1972, which came to be called “Ping-Pong Diplomacy” (乒乓外交 pingpang waijiao) in English, were nicknamed xiaoqiu zhuandong daqiu 小球转动大球 (small ball spins the big globe) in Chinese. Unbeknownst to many, Michigan played a key role in the 1972 exchanges.

Featuring an authentic Ping-Pong-table-sized panel that details highlights of these exchanges, this exhibition commemorates the 45th anniversary of the Chinese Table Tennis Delegation’s historic visit to the U.S. in 1972, especially to Ann Arbor and the U-M. Curated by Chinese Studies Librarian Liangyu Fu, this exhibition is co-sponsored by the Lieberthal-Rogel Center for Chinese Studies, the Confucius Institute, and the Asia Library.

The notion of "American Islam," signifying a uniquely American expression of Islam that either presently exists or awaits us as an attainable future, has been employed by diverse Muslim thinkers, including Salafi revivalists, progressive feminists, and even Muslim Republicans. Discourse of "American Islam" often represents this present/future as one in which American Muslims shed inauthentic cultural practices, achieve a pure and authentically textualist Islam, and then proceed to export "true Islam" to Muslims worldwide. The United States thus appears in these discourses as a sort of "umma laboratory" in which American Muslims will purify Islam on a global scale. This lecture examines the development of American Muslim exceptionalism, the exclusions and marginalizations that it performs, and calls attention to indicators of its decline.

Michael Muhammad Knight is the author of 11 books, including fiction, nonfiction, scholarship, and scholarly reflection. Knight’s work examines issues of authenticity and authority in Muslim communities, with special focus on American Muslims. He is assistant professor of religion and cultural studies at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. His 12th book, "Muhammad: Forty Introductions," is forthcoming in 2018.

Location: Hatcher Graduate Library
Organized By: Global Islamic Studies Center

Sylvia Chan-Malik offers a previously untold story of Islam in the United States that foregrounds the voices, experiences, and images of women of color in the United States from the early twentieth century to the present. Until the late 1960s, the majority of Muslim women in the U.S.—as well as almost all U.S. Muslim women who appeared in the American press or popular culture, were African American. Thus, she argues that lives and labors of African American Muslim women have—and continue to—forcefully shaped the meanings and presence of American Islam, and are critical to approaching issues confronting Muslim women in the contemporary U.S. Focusing on the experiences of African American women in the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam in 1920s Chicago, Chan-Malikexplores how U.S. Muslim women’s identities have been consistently forged against commonsense notions of racial, gendered, and religious belonging and citizenship, and argues that desires for gender and racial justice deeply inform U.S. women’s engagements with Islam.

Sylvia Chan-Malik studies the intersections of race, gender, and religion in the United States, with a particular interest in how these categories intersect in contemporary struggles for social justice. She teaches courses on race and ethnicity in the United States, Islam in/and America, social justice movements, feminist methodologies, multiethnic literature and culture in the U.S., and 20-21st century U.S. history. She is also on the faculty of the Women’s and Gender Studies department. Chan-Malik holds a PhD in Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, an MFA in Creative Writing from Mills College, and a BA in English and Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley.

During the Depression, the Federal Writers' Project (FWP) dispatched writers to sample the fare at group eating events like church dinners, political barbecues, and clambakes. Its America Eats project sought nothing less than to sample, and report upon, the tremendous range of foods eaten across the United States.
Dr. Camille Bégin shapes a cultural and sensory history of New Deal-era eating from the FWP archives, describing in mouth-watering detail how Americans tasted their food. Bégin explores how likes and dislikes, cravings and disgust operated within local sensory economies that she culls from the FWP's vivid descriptions, visual cues, culinary expectations, recipes and accounts of restaurant meals. She also illustrates how nostalgia, prescriptive gender ideals, and racial stereotypes shaped how the FWP was able to frame regional food cultures as "American."

Exhibit team: Jonathan Farr, Nora Krinitsky, Michelle McClellan, Gregory Parker, Emily Price, Kate Silbert

This LSA Bicentennial Theme Semester exhibit is presented with support from the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and the University of Michigan Bicentennial Office. Additional support provided by the Department of History and the Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies.

Reverberations of Rebellion: 1967 in Detroit and Ann Arbor (September 21, 2017 8:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/42291 42291-9900396@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 21, 2017 8:00am

Reforming the Word: Martin Luther in Context (September 21, 2017 8:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/42280 42280-9593329@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 21, 2017 8:30am
