The quantum Hall effect, an unexpected discovery at 2 a.m. on the 5th of February 1980 led to my Nobel Prize in 1985 and to a realization of a resistance standard based on fundamental constants. Since fundamental constants are the most stable quantities in our universe, a new international system of units based on constants of nature was introduced in 2019. The talk presents an overview of the quantum Hall effect and this importance for our new definition of the mass unit kilogram.

Doors to the fourth floor Rackham Amphitheatre will open at 3:00 pm for seating. Please come early! Per University policy, each guest will need to wear a face-covering and respond to the ResponsiBLUE COVID Screening Check via their smartphone: https://responsiblue.umich.edu/sign-in

Polarized America: Lessons from Sports

The polarization of American politics isn't new (remember the Civil War?), but the ways in which our culture, media, and perceptions of one another have become increasingly siloed is. Despite an increasingly national (and international) culture, it's easy to stay within our own political, social, economic and cultural box. But sports can cut across siloes in unexpected ways (while creating new ones). So what can sports teach us about how to depolarize America -- or, does sports tell us that depolarization is not an option? New York Times podcast host, writer and Very Online sports person Jane Coaston will try to explain.

Jane Coaston is the host of "The Argument." Previously, she was a senior politics reporter at Vox with a focus on conservatism and the GOP. Her work has appeared on MSNBC, CNN, NPR, and in National Review, the Washington Post, the Ringer, and ESPN Magazine, among others. In addition, she is a former resident fellow at the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics. She attended the University of Michigan and lives in Washington, D.C.

IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL EVENT

Amphitheatre, 4th Floor

Ann Arbor, MI 48109

Or participate virtually by registering in advance for the webinar: https://myumi.ch/mxx7w

After registration, you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to join the webinar.

Virtual participants will be able to join the lecture at 5:30 PM, after the in-person screening of the film "The Seasons" (1975).

In 1971, the Armenian filmmaker Artavazd Peleshyan, who had already established a name for himself with found footage films such as “The Beginning” (1967) and “We” (1969), articulated his theory of contrapuntal montage in the short programmatic text “Montage-at-a-Distance, or: A Theory of Distance”. Building on the tradition of earlier Soviet directors such as Sergei Eisenstein and Dziga Vertov, Peleshyan postulated a form of montage that could create contrapuntal effects, not only when juxtaposed, but also at a distance from each other, through the use of formal repetitions and variations.

This talk gives an overview of Peleshyan’s theory of montage, and how it has been applied in films whose themes have ranged from the history of the Russian revolution (“The Beginning”), to Armenian national self-conscious (“We”), the space race (“Our Century,” 1982) and, in his most recent work, finished in 2021 after a three-decade hiatus from filmmaking, humanity’s relationship with the natural environment (“La Nature”). Additionally, the diverse influences that Peleshyan’s reinvigoration of the practice of cinematic montage has had on other filmmakers – notably Jean-Luc Godard and Chris Marker – will be explored.

Daniel Fairfax is assistant professor in film studies at the Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. He has recently published a two-volume history of the French film journal Cahiers du cinéma’s Marxist period, “The Red Years of Cahiers du Cinéma (1968-1973)” (Amsterdam University Press, 2021).

Thomas C. Südhof is a Nobel-prize winning biochemist at Stanford University.

The Südhof laboratory studies how synapses form in the brain and how their properties are specified, which together organize neural circuits. Moreover, the Südhof laboratory examines how synapses become dysfunctional in neurodegenerative and neuropsychiatric disorders to pave the way for better therapies.

Dr. Südhof has had a remarkably productive career studying the molecular mechanisms controlling synaptic transmission and synaptogenesis. He is perhaps best known for his work identifying the core molecular machinery controlling the fusion of synaptic vesicles with the plasma membrane, including the calcium sensor synaptotagmin. His group also discovered neurexins and neuroligins, which are important cell-surface proteins controlling the specificity synapse formation.

In recent years, his group and collaborators have explored the molecular basis of several human diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia and autism.

Dr. Südhof has been an HHMI Investigator since 1986 and is the recipient of many awards recognizing his fundamental contributions to neuroscience and cell/molecular biology--among them, induction into the National Academy of Sciences (2002), the Kavli Prize (2010), the Albert Lasker Award (2013) as well as the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology.

After Dr. Südhof’s seminar there will be a reception in the West Atrium of the Biological Sciences Building under the life-size model of a pterosaur (Quetzalcoatlus northropi, the largest known flying animal to ever live on earth).

Please join us on March 14 for what will no doubt be a fascinating talk and an opportunity to meet with Dr. Südhof and members of the U-M science community.

Alexis Pauline Gumbs in conversation with Toshi Reagon is the 2022 Marc and Constance Jacobson Lecture. Can't attend in person? Watch the live-stream at https://myumi.ch/y9VNR.

Writer Alexis Pauline Gumbs talks to musician, composer, producer, and activist Toshi Reagon about her opera Parable of the Sower, based on the book by Octavia Butler. Moderated by Ebony Elizabeth Thomas.

About Octavia Butler Week:
Octavia Butler was a renowned African American author who received a MacArthur “Genius” Grant and PEN West Lifetime Achievement Award for her body of work. With Octavia Butler Week, we aim to explore the work and legacy of this visionary writer. It’s part of a larger series of events that include a community read, a multimedia performance, an open-mic night, and additional events that together comprise Parable Path A2Ypsi.

Culminating Parable Path A2Ypsi is Toshi Reagon and Bernice Johnson Reagon’s genre-defying musical adaptation of Octavia E. Butler’s novel Parable of the Sower. UMS will present this powerful performance March 25-27, 2022 at the Power Center in Ann Arbor. Tickets and info at ums.org.

About Toshi Reagon:
Toshi Reagon has been described as “a talented, versatile singer, songwriter and musician with a profound ear for sonic Americana—from folk to funk, from blues to rock” by critic/blogger Eva Yaa Asantewaa (InfiniteBody). “She masters each of these genres with vocal strategies that easily spiral and swoop from the expressively sinuous to the hard-charging, a combination of warmth and mischief.”

While her expansive career has landed her comfortably in residence at Carnegie Hall, the Paris Opera House and Madison Square Garden, you can just as easily find Toshi turning out a music festival, intimate venue or local club. Toshi finds home on any musical stage. Toshi has had the pleasure of working with Lenny Kravitz, Lizz Wright, Ani DiFranco, Carl Hancock Rux, Nona Hendryx, Pete Seeger, Chocolate Genius and many other amazing artists, including her favorite collaborator, her mom, Bernice Johnson Reagon.

Yaa Asantewaa writes, “Toshi knows the power of song to focus, unite and mobilize people. If you’ve been lucky enough to be in Toshi’s presence, you know you can’t walk away from her without feeling better about yourself as a human being. She aims for nothing less.”

Toshi has been the recipient of a NYFA award for Music Composition, The Black Lily Music and Film Festival Award for Outstanding Performance. She is a National Women’s History Month Honoree, and is the 2010 recipient of OutMusic’s Heritage Award.

About Alexis Pauline Gumbs:
Alexis Pauline Gumbs is a Queer Black Feminist Love Evangelist and an aspirational cousin to all life. She is/they are the author of several books, most recently Undrowned: Black Feminist Lessons from Marine Mammals and the co-founder of the Mobile Homecoming Trust, an intergenerational experiential living library of Black LBGTQ brilliance.

FRIDAY, APRIL 1, 6:00 PM
Rackham Auditorium

Democracy & Debate presents Emmy® award winning producer and multi-faceted artist, Mike Ellison with Detroit percussionist and producer D-Love for a live performance and interactive discussion: Song for Democracy.

Born in Ethiopia and raised in Reston, Virginia, Ellison fully realized himself as an interdisciplinary artist in Detroit. His music and spoken word draw from myriad life and cultural influences - and are imbued with the musical landscape and traditions of his birth country. His song “Ethiopia: Everything Will be Alright” became a national hit in Ethiopia in 2004 and his most recent music video “WEY FIKIR (Alleh)” addresses the war in Ethiopia raging for over a year through the lens of love and a romance.

Mike’s artistic expression moves beyond the realm of music. His acting credits span film, theater and television with recent appearances on 50 Cent’s STARZ series BMF and NBC’s Chicago Fire.

Driven by the power of art to inspire, inform and provoke dialogue, Mike’s music and words address a range of issues from social justice and civil rights, to the importance of community and collaboration. Join us for an exciting evening as Mike Ellison uses live performance, music and multimedia with Detroit percussionist and producer D-Love to engage with Song For Democracy.

Abstract:
The understanding of strongly-correlated quantum matter has challenged physicists for decades. The discovery three years ago of correlated phases and superconductivity in magic angle twisted bilayer graphene led to the emergence of a new materials platform to investigate strongly correlated physics, namely moiré quantum matter. These systems exhibit a plethora of quantum phases, such as correlated insulators, superconductivity, magnetism, Chern insulators, and more. In this talk, Professor Jarillo-Herrero will review some of the recent advances in the field, focusing on the newest generation of moiré quantum systems, where correlated physics, superconductivity, and other fascinating phases can be studied with unprecedented tunability. He will end the talk with an outlook of some exciting directions in this emerging field.

Professor Pablo Jarillo-Herrero from MIT studies novel condensed-matter systems and is especially well-known for his pioneering work with twisted bilayer graphene.

He has received the 2020 Wolf Prize in Physics and the 2020 Buckley Prize in Condensed Matter Physics, among many other honors.

The usual pandemic-related caveats apply, but we are currently anticipating an in-person lecture and a remote feed as well.

Haiqing Xu defends his dissertation

Although the expression stochasticity of an individual gene is unavoidable, clustering of genes promotes the synchronization of their expression fluctuation. This phenomenon provides a fitness benefit when the expression ratio of the clustered genes needs to stay constant, for example, because of the accumulation of toxic compounds when this ratio is altered.
