*Barakat*
2020 | 105 minutes | Afrikaans | South Africa
Directed by: Amy Jephta

When matriarch Aisha Davids decides to accept a marriage proposal, she devises a plan to break the news to her four sons over Eid. The only problem is that the two eldest sons have been at odds since their father passed away and refuse to be in the same room at the same time.

Her big reveal is spoiled when the boys hear via the grapevine about their mother’s pending marriage and come together to voice their disapproval. Now it’s up to Aisha, her fiancé, and her daughters-in-law to bring the sons around to her way of thinking using the one thing they can all agree on–the *barakat*. *Barakat*, an Arabic word meaning blessings, is a story about celebrating life, culture, and the importance of family.

Film Background & Facts:
*Barakat* is a 2020 South African family drama film directed by Amy Jephta and produced by Ephraim Gordon. It is the first Afrikaans-language Muslim feature film produced in South Africa. *Barakat*, an Urdu word meaning “Blessings,” was told with gentle humanity stemming from filmmakers with lived experience. This is a rare and insightful glimpse into the heart of the Muslim, Malay, mixed-race community of Cape Town, seen through the prism of one family’s travails as they grapple with the ups and downs of life, love, and familial relationships in a way that is recognizable and relatable.

Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit), open now through May 21st.

A public reception will be held on March 9th, 6:00–9:00 PM, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.

We hope you will be able to see the exhibit, and please be in touch if you have any questions.

Humanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height, weight, etc. In the process, their humanity is denied.

This exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so, those in prison reclaim their humanity.

Cowboy Junkies are a Canadian alternative country/blues/folk rock band. The group was formed in Toronto in 1985 by Margo Timmins (vocalist), Michael Timmins (songwriter, guitarist), Peter Timmins (drummer) and Alan Anton (bassist). The Junkies first performed publicly at the Beverley Tavern and other clubs in Toronto’s Queen Street West, including The Rivoli. Their 1986 debut album, produced by Canadian producer Peter Moore, was the blues-inspired “Whites Off Earth Now!!,” recorded using an ambisonic microphone in the family garage. The group’s fame spread with their second album, “The Trinity Session,” recorded in 1987 at Toronto’s Church of the Holy Trinity. Their sound, again using the ambisonic microphone, and their mix of blues, country, folk, rock and jazz earned them both critical attention and a cult following. The Los Angeles Times named the recording as one of the ten best albums of 1988. In the early 1990s Margo Timmins was named one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People. The group has continued to tour North America, Europe, Japan and Australia. In 2008, they released Trinity Revisited in celebration of the 20th anniversary of the original recording of The Trinity Session. These days, Cowboy Junkies shows revisit old material in creative ways, but they always bring new music as well.

MPSDS JPSM Seminar Series
April 5, 2022
12:00 - 1:00 EST

Stephanie Morales is a second-year Ph.D. student at the University of Michigan's Program in Survey and Data Science. She holds a BA in Psychology and an MA in Sociology. She is interested in cross-cultural surveys, measurement error in data collection with racial/ethnic minorities, and adaptive survey design.

Assessing Cross-Cultural Comparability of Self-Rated Health and Its Conceptualization through Web Probing

Self-rated health (SRH) is a widely used question across different fields, as it is simple to administer yet has been shown to predict mortality. SRH asks respondents to rate their overall health typically using Likert-type response scales (i.e., excellent, very good, good, fair, poor). Although SRH is commonly used, few studies have examined its conceptualization from the respondents’ point of view and even less so for differences in its conceptualization across diverse populations. We aim to assess the comparability of SRH across different cultural groups by investigating the factors that respondents consider when responding to the SRH question. We included an open-ended probe asking what respondents thought when responding to SRH in web surveys conducted in five countries: Great Britain, Germany, the U.S., Spain, and Mexico. In the U.S., we targeted six racial/ethnic and linguistic groups: English-dominant Koreans, Korean-dominant Koreans, English-dominant Latinos, Spanish-dominant Latinos, non-Latino Black Americans, and non-Latino White Americans. One novelty of our study is allowing multiple attribute codes (e.g., health behaviors, illness) per respondent and tone (e.g., in the direction of positive or negative health or neutral) of the probing responses for each attribute, allowing us 1) to assess respondents’ thinking process holistically and 2) to examine whether and how respondents mix attributes. Our study compares the number of reported attributes and tone by cultural groups and integrates SRH responses in the analysis. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of SRH by revealing the cognitive processes among diverse populations and is expected to shed light on its cross-cultural comparability.

Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science (MPSDS)
The University of Michigan Program in Survey Methodology was established in 2001 seeking to train future generations of survey and data scientists. In 2021, we changed our name to the Michigan Program in Survey and Data Science. Our curriculum is concerned with a broad set of data sources including survey data, but also including social media posts, sensor data, and administrative records, as well as analytic methods for working with these new data sources. And we bring to data science a focus on data quality — which is not at the center of traditional data science. The new name speaks to what we teach and work on at the intersection of social research and data. The program offers doctorate and master of science degrees and a certificate through the University of Michigan. The program's home is the Institute for Social Research, the world's largest academically-based social science research institute.

Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques (SISRT)
The mission of the Summer Institute is to provide rigorous and high quality graduate training in all phases of survey research. The program teaches state-of-the-art practice and theory in the design, implementation, and analysis of surveys. The Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques has presented courses on the sample survey since the summer of 1948, and has offered such courses every summer since. Graduate-level courses through the Program in Survey and Data Science are offered from June 5 through July 28 and available to enroll in as a Summer Scholar.

The Summer Institute uses the sample survey as the basic instrument for the scientific measurement of human activity. It presents sample survey methods in courses designed to meet the educational needs of those specializing in social and behavioral research such as professionals in business, public health, natural resources, law, medicine, nursing, social work, and many other domains of study.

Join us in community to practice mindfulness meditation, a life-enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. This formal, largely-guided, practice utilizes evidence-based cognitive training that bolsters one's ability to handle stress, poor mood, and threat.  This weekly mindfulness practice encourages present moment, non-judgemental, awareness – noticing where your focus and attention are and continually inviting attention to current mind and body sensations in a kind and compassionate way.

Mindfulness meditation opens the possibility to pause, gain perspective, attend to the present, and respond accordingly. In our ever-changing, complex, and challenging world, mindfulness can provide grounding. As one form of contemplative practice, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.

Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. All are welcome to attend weekly or drop-in as their schedule allows.

Tom Rush may not be as well known as some fellow veterans of Club 47 in 1960s Cambridge, Massachusetts—people like Joan Baez, Bob Dylan, and Judy Collins. Yet he's second to none in terms of his impact down through the years. Tom’s three albums for Elektra in the 1960s were key founding documents of the entire singer-songwriter concept, and he's influenced everyone from James Taylor to Garth Brooks. A performer with an abiding love of being in front of an audience, Rush is a rib-tickling storyteller, an expressive singer, and a guitarist capable of real melancholy. He's a durable Ark favorite, and, says the Chicago Tribune, he's "probably the only man alive who should be allowed to sing Joni Mitchell songs." Tom Rush is, in short, folk royalty.

THIS WEEK’S FEATURE:
Available to stream on demand from March 30-April 6 at http://watch.eventive.org/amff

Organized By: Prison Creative Arts Project, The

The FTC wants to ban noncompetition agreements in employment contracts due to their negative effects on employee mobility, even when unenforceable. Prof. JJ Prescott will discuss three of his recent papers supporting this rulemaking, including the use and impact of noncompetes on employees, the role of noncompetes in employee mobility, and the subjective beliefs about noncompete enforceability. This research shows that contracts matter regardless of enforceability, making traditional reform ideas ineffective.

Join Charles Gay (he/him) and the LSA Opportunity Hub for a discussion on how to identify and harness your LSA skills towards propelling your career forward, especially in the early years after graduation. This conversation will center on the exploration of all the career pathways down which your major can take you. Charles is working to build a career that expands Black banking in the United States. His Organizational Studies degree gave him the tools to understand people, but he knew gaining experience in finance would further contribute to his success. Upon graduating in 2021, Charles immediately moved to Boston to take on an investment management role where he built up skills and knowledge around private equity and venture capitalism. Today, his nine-to-five is working with investment leaders, and his five-to-nine is spent on his entrepreneurial journey to support Black bankers nationwide.

About Charles:
Charles works at HarbourVest Partners where he handles portfolio allocations and investments. Prior to HarbourVest, Charles was in an investment management role at Cambridge Associates.

You should attend this session if you are:
- Interested in a career in private equity or venture capital
- Exploring entrepreneurship as a post-graduation option
- Curious about applying skills and knowledge from your nine-to-five job to fuel other projects and interests.
- The ‘411’ on living and working in Boston

What you’ll gain by attending:
- Inspiration to use your degree to ignite your next steps
- Tips from a recent grad on how to best leverage your LSA education
- Insights into moving across the country for a job

RSVP now to be part of the conversation. The link to join this virtual Alum Connection will be emailed to you after you RSVP.

The LSA Opportunity Hub aims to deliver inclusive and accessible experiences and welcomes all LSA students to participate. CANCELED: Lynn Goldsmith (April 6, 2023 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102695 102695-21804991@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 6, 2023 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

The Lynn Goldsmith event scheduled for April 6, 2023 has been canceled due to illness and will be rescheduled at a later date.
Over the past 50 years Lynn Goldsmith has been an inventor, a filmmaker, a director for network television, a co-manager of a rock band, a songwriter and recording artist, a business owner, crusader for copyright protection, and consistently, through it all, a photographer.
Lynn Goldsmith’s photographic images are in numerous museum collections, including The Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, The Museum of Modern Art, The Chicago Museum of Contemporary Photography, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Museum Folkwang, The Polaroid Collection, and The Kodak Collection. Her work over the past 50 years in the editorial world has appeared on and between the covers of publications including Life, Newsweek, Time, Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, National Geographic Traveler, Sports Illustrated, People, Elle, Interview, The New Yorker. The subjects have varied from entertainment personalities to sports stars, from film directors to authors, from the extraordinary to the ordinary man on the street. Winning numerous prestigious awards from the Lucien Clergue to the World Press in Portraiture, to the Lucie for Portraiture in 2020. She was included in Chronicle Book’s publication 200 Women Who Will Change the Way You See the World.
Goldsmith was the founder of the first photo agency to focus on celebrity portraiture, representing the work of over two hundred worldwide photographers. Part of founding the agency was to make more photographers aware of the importance of copyright. For the past 4 years she has been fighting a legal battle with the Warhol Foundation which is based on making sure that the copyright law does not become so diluted by the definition of fair use that visual artists lose the rights to their work.
By the early 80’s, Goldsmith expanded her creativity to become the first ‘optic-music’ artist. Using the alias Will Powers, she wrote and produced the album Dancing For Mental Health released on Island Records. Working with acclaimed musicians Sting, Steve Winwood, Todd Rundgren, and Nile Rodgers, her debut album won critical acclaim and the single, “Kissing With Confidence,” reached #3 on the British charts. The roots of her music came from the experience of being in a band, The Walking Wounded, while attending the University of Michigan where she graduated in 3 years Magna Cum Laude with a B.A. in both English and Psychology.
Lynn Goldsmith’s talk will focus on the music of the 1980’s. Her latest book explores the 1980’s, a decade where more new forms of music and fashion were all popular simultaneously. It was also the decade in which Goldsmith made the album Dancing For Mental Health, which delivers the message she puts into all her work: break limiting thought patterns, bust through fear, take risks, and persistently work hard toward your goals.

Two years after his wife’s unexpected death, Yusuke Kafuku, a renowned stage actor and director, receives an offer to direct a production of *Uncle Vanya* at a theater festival in Hiroshima. There, he meets a taciturn young woman assigned by the festival to chauffeur him in his beloved red Saab 900. As the production’s premiere approaches, tensions mount amongst the cast and crew, not least between Yusuke and Koji Takatsuki, a handsome TV star who shares an unwelcome connection to Yusuke’s late wife. Forced to confront painful truths raised from his past, Yusuke begins—with the help of his driver—to face the haunting mysteries his wife left behind. Adapted from Haruki Murakami’s short story, Ryusuke Hamaguchi’s Oscar-winning *Drive My Car* is a haunting road movie traveling a path of love, loss, acceptance, and peace.

After 25 years in music, building an unimpeachable reputation as a truly independent artist and entrepreneur, Julian Taylor now owns his legacy. From the formative rock of Staggered Crossing to the genre fusion of Julian Taylor Band, and now his revered work as a solo singer-songwriter, Julian owns the right to it all and it couldn’t have happened at a better time. It’s rare in this era to see an artist build slowly and reach a new level of widespread acclaim two decades into a career. But Julian’s ethos, work ethic, and artistry has always had a timeless quality to it. And so, he’s built things slowly in a DIY fashion, withstanding highs and lows along the way, ultimately reaching the peak of his powers with his latest solo work. Fans and critics have noticed, granting Julian the Solo Artist of the Year honour at the Canadian Folk Music Awards (and nomination in the English Songwriter category), plus two Juno Award nominations in 2021, as well as a Polaris Music Prize nomination. And that baritone voice—you have to hear it! Julian comes from Toronto with a new album, “Beyond the Reservoir.”

Error bound characterizations of conical constraint qualification in convex programming (April 7, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/103981 103981-21808182@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 7, 2023 9:00am

This talk deals with error bound characterizations of the conical constraint qualification (CCQ) for convex inequality systems in a Banach space. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for a closed convex set defined by a convex function to have CCQ. We show that these characterizations only take place in certain very specific situations.

We give technical examples showing that these characterizations are limited to these ones. We introduce a new condition in terms of the gauge function which allows us to give an error bound characterization of convex nondifferentiable systems and to obtain as a direct consequence different characterizations of the concept of the strong conical hull intersection property (CHIP) for a finite collection of convex sets.

This is based on the joint work with A. Barbara.

ABSTRACT: While mechanisms of embryonic development are well conserved among mammals, the progression speed tends to be slower in larger species. To study differences in time between species, my group uses in vitro systems. We have recently recapitulated the segmentation clock, oscillatory gene expression during early development, from human and mouse pluripotent stem cells. The oscillation period of the human segmentation clock is 5-6 hours, while the mouse period is 2-3 hours. We found that this period difference between species stems from slower biochemical reactions in human cells, including slower protein degradation and longer delays in gene expression processes. Now we are extending this approach of cross-species comparison to other mammalian species, including the marmoset and rhinoceros, and other developmental processes. In parallel, we develop genetic tools to manipulate developmental processes and organoids.

CSEAS Lecture Series. From the “Bloody Crown” to space travel: Comparing the social imaginaries of Malay and English language novels in Brunei Darussalam (April 7, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102883 102883-21805281@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 7, 2023 12:00pm

The first Malay language novel in Brunei can be traced back to 1951. Despite a high level of literacy and widespread proficiency in English, it was only in 2009 that the first Bruneian novel in English was published. This lecture will offer a brief overview of Bruneian literature from its origins to the present, exploring the different literary and development trajectories taken by Malay language and Anglophone literature in Brunei. Using Driscoll, Fletcher, and Wilkins’ notion of genre worlds (2022) to map out the social, textual, and industrial conventions that govern the production of literature in Brunei, this lecture will then offer some reflections on how contemporary Bruneian novels in Malay and English have developed diverging social imaginaries about Bruneian identity.

In particular, this lecture will consider how contemporary literature in Malay and English has been influenced by an awareness of representations of Brunei from outside the country and discuss the various narrative and paratextual tactics that have been employed in engagement with the claims of the global imaginary.

Flash Talk | From Qift to Karanis: Egyptian Laborers in Michigan's Fayum Excavations (April 7, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/106475 106475-21814330@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 7, 2023 12:00pm

This Flash Talk centers on a small handful of Arabic documents from Michigan's excavations at Karanis preserved in U-M's Bentley Historical Library. The texts open a rare window into the socioeconomic life of the Egyptian laborers employed by Michigan in the 1920s and 1930s. Most of these workers were not Fayum locals but were instead migrants from the town of Qift some 300 miles south, where they had acquired considerable archaeological expertise on digs led by the famous British Egyptologist William Flinders Petrie. These documents thus shed light on Michigan's dependence on the networks of labor and expertise created by European colonialism in Egypt, and hint at some of the difficulties these migrant laborers faced when far from home.

Kelsey Museum Flash Talks are 15-minute Zoom lectures by Kelsey curators, staff members, researchers, and graduate students talking about their recent research or current projects. Each presentation is followed by 15 minutes of Q&A. Flash Talks are free and open to all visitors. They take place at noon on the first Friday of every month.

Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly, drop-in program designed to help you nourish your spirit and heal your body and mind.

All U-M students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required.

Advanced Wellness techniques are taught on the first Friday of the Month and that session will be about 45 mins.

*What will you learn?*

The guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation, rejuvenation, and meditation.

Relaxation brings your body to a calm, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice.

*Why Meditate?*

While physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony.

(Kimberly Ransom)
While interning at Rebuild Foundation’s Stony Island Arts Bank (SAB) in Chicago, Kimberly Ransom has reviewed the objects and documents in the Ed Williams Black Memorabilia Collection to help Rebuild Artist-Fellows learn how to engage and use the archive as data to inspire and create new art. As an interdisciplinary historian, Kimberly has also leveraged the collection to further her research and public-facing scholarship. Specifically, she has examined a collection of early 20 th century postcards with malicious depictions of Black children. Kimberly aims to use the collection to create a counter-narrative of historical photographs that benevolently depict Black children in and around schools on Chicago’s Southside, visually positioning them as possessors of childhood in the public imagination. In her presentation, Kimberly will discuss her experience and how community museums and archives can expand historical scholarship toward community art and action.

The Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art
(Pelle Tracey)
In the summer of 2022, Pelle Tracey interned at the Philadelphia Institute of Contemporary Art under the supervision of Assistant Curator Alex Klein. In this presentation, Pelle will describe two of the main projects he pursued: archiving a recent long-term collaboration between the ICA and the Dakar, Senegal-based art institution RAW Material Company, and conducting oral history interviews with Los Angeles artist Carl Cheng. Through these projects Pelle learned a great deal about how a contemporary art museum functions, and how a museum focused on the future of art engages with the past.

ABOUT THE LECTURE
In this talk, Bettina Stoetzer will present materials from her book "Ruderal City: Ecologies of Migration, Race, and Urban Nature in Berlin." "Ruderal City" traces relationships among people, plants, and animals in contemporary Berlin as they make their lives in the ruins of European nationalism and capitalism. She develops the notion of the ruderal—originally an ecological designation for the unruly life that inhabits inhospitable environments such as rubble, roadsides, train tracks, and sidewalk cracks—to theorize Berlin as a “ruderal city.”

Stoetzer explores sites in and around Berlin that have figured in German national imaginaries—gardens, forests, parks, and rubble fields—to show how racial, class, and gender inequalities shape contestations over today’s uses and knowledges of urban nature. Drawing on fieldwork with gardeners, botanists, migrant workers, refugees, public officials, and nature enthusiasts while charting human and more-than-human worlds, Stoetzer offers a wide-ranging ethnographic portrait of Berlin’s postwar ecologies that reveals emergent futures in the margins of European cities. Brimming with stories that break down divides between environmental perspectives and the study of migration and racial politics, Berlin’s ruderal worlds help us rethink the space of nature and culture and the categories through which we make sense of urban life in inhospitable times.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Bettina Stoetzer is a cultural anthropologist whose research focuses on the intersections of ecology, globalization, and social justice in the US and Germany. Bettina received her M.A. in Sociology, Anthropology and Media Studies from the University of Goettingen and completed her Ph.D. in Anthropology at the University of California Santa Cruz in 2011. Before coming to MIT, she was a Harper Fellow in the Society of Fellows at the University of Chicago. Bettina’s book, "Ruderal City: Ecologies of Migration, Race, and Urban Life in Berlin" (Duke University Press, December 2022), draws on fieldwork with immigrant and refugee communities, as well as ecologists, nature enthusiasts and other Berlin residents to illustrate how human-environment relations have become a key register through which urban citizenship is articulated in contemporary Europe. The ethnographic research and writing for this project has been supported by the Wenner-Gren Foundation, the ACLS/Mellon Foundation, and a UC Chancellor’s fellowship. Bettina is also the author of a book on feminism and anti-racism, titled "InDifferenzen: Feministische Theorie in der Antirassistischen Kritik" (InDifferences: Feminist Theory in Antiracist Criticism, argument, 2004), and she co-edited "Shock and Awe: War on Words" together with Bregje van Eekelen, Jennifer Gonzalez, and Anna Tsing (New Pacific Press, 2004). Bettina is currently working on a new project on wildlife mobility, climate change, and nationalism in the US and Germany. At MIT, Bettina teaches classes on urban life and ethnography, race and migration, environmental justice, gender, science and technology, and the politics of nature in Germany.

Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities, communications, and safety.
This work stems from artist Caroline Sinders' previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of 'infrastructural' and 'architectural' spaces, both online and offline, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure, and open, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research, Sinders analyzed how structures, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.
Caroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders' residency and practice in this Q&A.
Sinders is an award winning critical designer, researcher, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence, intersectional justice, systems design, harm, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern, the United Nations, the European Commission, Ars Electronica, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. 1989 is a new, devised performance that centers on Irina Nistor, a TV translator in Romania who secretly dubbed thousands of American movies that were censored under the oppressive dictatorship of Nicolae Ceausescu. She voiced every role in the movies — from Sylvestor Stallone in Rocky to Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray in Dirty Dancing, and neighbors and friends would gather illegally to watch the videos behind closed doors. 1989 explores the final months leading up to the 1989 Romanian revolution through the lens of these “video nights” — through the relationships among those who watched the movies and navigated their interactions in the shadow of extreme austerity and authoritarian rule.

NPR has called Susan Werner "folk's empress of the unexpected." Susan is a triple threat at folk awards ceremonies with her luxuriously smooth and strong voice (she's a former opera singer), riveting lyrics, and haunting melodies. "When it comes to crafting a song, Ms. Werner's only peers are Jimmy Webb and Paul Simon," raves No Depression. Susan can do it all! She's a virtuoso on both piano and guitar, and her recordings have ranged from hardcore folk to Broadway music, humorous songs, a skeptical yet sympathetic take on gospel, songs of farming, and even classical arrangements of classic rock. Susan has a way of reinventing herself for each new project, but there's a core of humor, sophistication, and musical craft that endures. Susan comes to Michigan with a unique new EP, “The Birds of Florida.”

The Ginsberg Center’s Dewey Series recognizes the enduring legacy of philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey, who taught at U of M in the 1890’s and, later, went on to found the New School for Social Research. Chief among Dewey’s enduring ideas were that experience is the means through which we come to understand and connect with the world around us and that universal education is the key to democracy.

This year, Ginsberg Center, is collaborating with Matthaei Botanical Gardens & Nichols Arboretum and University of Michigan Museum of Art, to host a dialogue on the intersection of community, identity, public spaces, and environmental justice. We will also offer additional opportunities to explore MBGNA including garden tours and a scavenger hunt.

We hope you can join us for a restorative and engaging event!

Artist Caroline Sinders will present her work and lead a workshop on how design impacts privacy and security, and will explore ways to rethink how current large technology platforms generate surveillance capitalism that harm users but benefit the companies themselves. These workshops are interactive, and require no technology. Participants will be led through a series of speculative design exercises, allowing participants to rethink, remake, and reshape technology so it serves them and their communities, and not just the companies.
Sinders is the 2023 Roman J.

Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Sinders is currently based between London, UK and New Orleans, USA.

Matthaei Botanical Gardens’ Winter Walks are held most Wednesdays and Sundays through April. These free, guided walks will take place inside the Conservatory (though if the weather is particularly wonderful, we may move outside – watch this page for updates). MBG Winter Walks are designed for all ages to inspire curiosity and learning from each other through activities that model curiosity and honor nature. If we have a sizeable mixed-age group, we may separate into two sets to offer the same content at different levels of engagement.

Wednesday walks begin at 5:30 pm. Sunday walks begin at 1:00 pm. We recommend gathering inside the lobby of Matthaei Botanical Gardens about 10 minutes before the start.

Sinders is currently based between London, UK and New Orleans, USA.

Over the years, the institutional policies, practices, and discourses surrounding affirmative action have changed drastically, and with the impending Supreme Court decision, there is renewed attention to this issue that continues to have a significant impact on how institutions of higher education work to forward diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) on their campuses. In the wake of an impending Supreme Court decision on affirmative action, no matter the legal ramifications of this decision, institutions must be prepared to continue to lead for DEI in higher education in the face of resistance – whether legal or socio-political. This webinar will feature leaders and scholars who have experienced state-level affirmative action bans on how they responded and lessons learned as they lead for DEI.

Queering Identity: A Conversation with 2Fik (April 10, 2023 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/106868 106868-21814954@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, April 10, 2023 1:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Judaic Studies

Join 2Fik in conversation with Adi Saleem Bharat for a discussion about deconstructing reified, oppositional notions of Jewishness and Muslimness through performance art and the possibility of broadening (or queering) our understandings of what it means to be Jewish and Muslim in the twenty-first century. 2Fik is a multidisciplinary artist known for embodying multiple, unique characters. Through his social and political works, 2Fik creates lives for characters who almost seem real, whose stories, personalities, and interests are rooted in our world. Each of his creations are conceived in a voyeuristic way that pushes the spectator to wonder what exists beyond the scope of the work. Each character in this humorous and interpretative world becomes a reflection of our society. Québécois by adoption, French by birth, and Moroccan by origin, 2Fik stages his characters much in the manner of a soap opera/reality show, thus creating a dialogue between reality and fiction that provokes a reflection on our society and our place in it. A pioneer in his field with a nearly twenty-year career, he masters the art of caricature and encourages the reflection on universality, equality between men and women, and the acceptance of oneself as a unique being. His work has been the subject of a number of critical scholarly analyses, from Denis Provencher's book Queer Maghrebi French: Language, Temporalities, Transfiliations (2017) to Gil Hochberg's article "From 'sexy Semite' to Semitic ghosts: contemporary art between Arab and Jew" (2020).

Separation or divorce is difficult to handle in general — when children are in the mix, it becomes that much more complex. Many parents are concerned about the well-being of their children during this time of change. This University Center for the Child and Family workshop delivers practical parenting advice in a collaborative, caring environment for those going through change. We help parents understand their children’s needs during the transition and offer specific suggestions for creating the most beneficial post-divorce parenting relationships.

The program is an approved alternative to the SMILE Program by the Friend of the Court.

What to Expect
+ Practical, actionable advice for couples going through a temporary or permanent split.
+ A caring and collaborative environment for attendees facilitated by UCCF staff members.
+ Guidance to help parents understand their children’s needs during what can be a tumultuous time of change and uncertainty.
+A certificate of participation once the workshop is over.

While it is free, workshop participants must register via Eventbrite. You will be provided the link once your registration is confirmed.

The discovery of Denisovans is one of the most exciting findings in human evolution in the past decade. The striking similarity between sequences of the high-altitude adaptation gene EPAS1 in modern Tibetans and Denisovans suggested adaptive introgression. However, the time and geographic ranges where the adaptive introgression happened remain unknown. This talk consists of three studies that are related to archaic adaptive introgression. First, I show that modern Tibetans experienced two pulses of Denisovan introgression, among which a group more alike the Denisovans from the Altai mountains introduced the adaptive EPAS1 haplotype, and the positive selection on EPAS1 did not start until well-after the Last Glacial Maximum. Second, resolving the timeline of Denisovan adaptive introgression spurred an opportunity to reexamine Tibetan population history, which remains perplexing after decades of work. By leveraging genetic and archaeological evidence, I show that there are two possible models for the population history on Tibetan Plateau. Lastly, I introduce MaLAdapt – a machine learning method for detecting genome-wide adaptive introgression, which reveals novel knowledge of how genomic variants from archaic humans facilitated modern human adaptations in worldwide populations.

Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy (April 11, 2023 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/107057 107057-21815223@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 11, 2023 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Sinders is currently based between London, UK and New Orleans, USA.
