Christine El-Hage & Musicology PhD student Eric Whitmer performs on the Charles Baird Carillon, an instrument of 53 bronze bells located inside the Burton Memorial Tower. The largest bell, which strikes the hour, weighs 12 tons, while the smallest bell, 4½ octaves above, weighs just 15 pounds.

Thirty-minute recitals are performed on the Charles Baird Carillon at noon every weekday that classes are in session, followed by visitor Q&A with the carillonist. The bell chamber may be accessed via a combination of elevator and stairs. Take the elevator to the highest floor possible (floor 8), and then climb two flights of stairs (39 steps) to the bell chamber (floor 10). Earplugs are available from the carillonist upon request. Be prepared to walk on ice and snow in the bell chamber during winter. Built in 1936, the Charles Baird Carillon is not ADA accessible. Visitors with mobility concerns are invited to visit the Lurie Carillon: https://smtd.umich.edu/facilities/ann-and-robert-h-lurie-carillon/

With a Sweetland Minor in Writing you will earn a credential that certifies your writing expertise to prospective employers and graduate programs. You will also pick up new media skills designing and creating content for your electronic writing portfolios.

If you are interested in learning more about the Sweetland Minor in Writing from current students and faculty, or have questions about the application process, you can attend a Minor in Writing Virtual Information Session hosted on Zoom.

The deadline to apply for the Fall 2024 cohort is Monday, March 18th at noon.

BIPOC PLSG (peer led support group), is a drop-in, confidential healing space for survivors of sexual assault, intimate partner violence, stalking, and/or sexual harassment, who identify as people of color. Facilitated by student staff, BIPOC PLSG is a place for survivors of color at UM to find not only community but healing opportunities, including anxiety-reduction, self-care activities, and mindfulness.

POC PLSG offers low-key activities as well as a safe space for sharing experiences with racial/ethnic identity, violence, and the intersection between both, as people are comfortable sharing. Survivors are welcome whether they experienced harm in college, or earlier in life.

This space specifically centers UM student survivors who identify as people of color; if you do not identify as a person of color, we encourage you to consider joining SAPAC’s general Peer Led Support Group: sapac.umich.edu/PLSG

The University Center for the Child and Family (UCCF) is offering new sessions of the virtual Understanding and Managing ADHD – Free Parent and Guardian Workshop for Spring and Summer 2024.

Separation or divorce is difficult to handle in general — when children are in the mix, it becomes that much more complex. Many parents are concerned about the well-being of their children during this time of change. This UCCF workshop delivers practical parenting advice in a collaborative, caring environment for those going through change. We help parents understand their children’s needs during the transition and offer specific suggestions for creating the most beneficial post-divorce parenting relationships.

The workshop is free, but participants are required to register and will receive the Zoom link to access the online event during the registration process.

The program is an approved alternative to the SMILE Program by the Friend of the Court.

When “representative” surveys fail: Can a non-ignorable missingness mechanism explain bias in estimates of COVID-19 vaccine uptake?

Recently, attention was drawn to the failure of two very large internet-based probability surveys to correctly estimate COVID-19 vaccine uptake in the U.S. in early 2021. Both the Delphi-Facebook COVID-19 Trends and Impact Survey (CTIS) and Census Household Pulse Survey (HPS) overestimated vaccine uptake substantially (14 and 17 points in May 2021) compared to retroactively available CDC benchmark data. These surveys had large numbers of respondents but very low response rates (<10%), and thus non-ignorable nonresponse could have substantially impacted estimates. Specifically, it is plausible that “anti-vaccine” individuals were less likely to complete a survey about COVID-19; we might also hypothesize that “anti-vaccine” individuals could be suspicious of the government and thus less likely to respond to an official government-sponsored survey. In this talk we use proxy pattern-mixture models (PPMMs) to retrospectively estimate the proportion of adults (18+) who received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, using data from the CTIS and HPS, under a non-ignorable nonresponse assumption. We compare these estimates to the true benchmark uptake numbers and show that the PPMM could have detected the direction of the bias and have provided meaningful bias bounds. We also use the PPMM to estimate vaccine hesitancy, a measure without a benchmark truth, and compare to the direct survey estimates. We conclude with discussion of how the PPMM could be prospectively as part of an assessment of nonresponse and/or selection bias, factors that would facilitate such analyses in the future, and ongoing work to extend the PPMM to novel areas.

Rebecca Andridge is an Associate Professor of Biostatistics at The Ohio State University College of Public Health. She conducts methodologic work in imputation methods for missing data, primarily in large-scale probability samples, and measures of selection bias for nonprobability samples. In particular, she works on methods for imputing data when missingness is driven by the missing values themselves (missing not at random). She teaches introductory graduate and undergraduate biostatistics and won the College's Outstanding Teaching Award in 2011 and is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association.

This presentation will look at the role sex and gender play in evaluating firearm restrictions and developing the boundaries of the nascent Second Amendment right. Theoretical constructs based on sex stereotypes and gender hierarchy help expand the Second Amendment while simultaneously obscuring the threat this poses to women, especially those who are pregnant.

“Networking” is a word that’s thrown around a lot, but what does it really mean? In this coffee chat for graduate students, we’ll unpack what networking is, why it’s useful, and some strategies to make it worthwhile. In particular, we’ll focus on informational interviewing as a valuable approach to gathering career-related information, in addition to making a clear and effective “elevator pitch” to describe yourself as you network. Regardless of what year you are in your program, this is a valuable skill that you can start applying today.

If you have any questions, please email rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/qGDyZ.
We want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time, preferably one week, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

Penny Stamps Speaker Series - Susan Goethel Campbell (March 13, 2024 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/116242 116242-21836492@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 13, 2024 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Susan Goethel Campbell is a multi-disciplinary artist and printmaker based in metropolitan Detroit. Her process-based work considers the dynamic qualities of the built environment to include periods of growth, decline, and dormancy. Central to Campbell’s practice are questions surrounding the integration and erasure of human agency over broader global systems. She often works with ephemeral materials intended to erode and change over time. Her work is realized in formats that include prints, drawings, artist books/objects, photographs, videos, and installations.

In tandem with Campbell’s visit to the series, the U-M Institute for the Humanities has commissioned and will exhibit her new work, Garden Repairs, drawing from the life cycle of plants as a model for repairing landscapes ravaged by war and extreme weather events. Her regenerative brick book is filled with seeds, soil, and water, a hopeful gesture toward new life when it is broken apart. The exhibit will open following the talk and be on view through May 2, 2024.

Campbell’s work has been exhibited internationally in Belgium, Germany, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Slovenia, and throughout the United States. Her work is in the collection of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, New York Public Library, Yale University Art Gallery, Detroit Institute of Arts, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Cranbrook Art Museum, Grand Rapids Art Museum, University of Colorado Art Museum, The Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, Toledo Museum of Art, and the University of Michigan Special Collections Library. Campbell has been awarded residencies at MacDowell, Banff Centre for the Arts, Frans Masereel Centrum, Jentel Foundation, P.R.I.N.T Research Center of North Texas, Skopelos Foundation and Beisinghoff Print Residency. Campbell is the recipient of a Kresge Artist Fellowship, Creative Artist Grant, Arts Foundation of Michigan, and a grant from the Three Rivers Arts Festival in conjunction with the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

Campbell has taught studio art at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, including on the faculty of both the Cranbrook Academy of Art and the College for Creative Studies. She has been a visiting artist in numerous institutions of higher education throughout the country. Campbell is represented by David Klein Gallery (Detroit, MI), Aspinwall Editions (Hudson, New York), and Galerie Tom Blaess (Bern, Switzerland).

Understanding Barriers to Mental Health Related Help-Seeking in Undergraduate Engineers (March 14, 2024 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/120131 120131-21844101@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 14, 2024 2:00pm

Organized By: Engineering Education Research

Abstract: The prevalence of mental health disorders on college campuses is of increasing concern. Within engineering, there has been an increase in the amount of research conducted on characterizing student mental health and understanding the influence of engineering culture on mental wellness. Research has shown that engineering students in mental health distress are less likely to have received professional help compared to their peers. This identifies a treatment gap for engineering students, meaning that only a portion of those in mental health distress are seeking professional treatment. Addressing the treatment gap can improve the prognosis of mental health problems and reduce progression to more chronic or severe disorders. Through this talk, I will present results of both qualitative and quantitative research studies aimed at better understanding the beliefs that engineering students have about seeking help for a mental health concern. In particular, I will discuss barriers and facilitators to help-seeking including challenges in navigating the mental healthcare system, the perception that help-seeking is a sacrifice of time and academics, and the importance of mental health culture in engineering. Further, I will talk about the influence of engineering student, faculty and staff messaging on students’ beliefs about help seeking. Results of this work will provide guidance for intervention development to improve mental health related help-seeking in undergraduate engineering students.

Creative provocateur Machine Dazzle has been dazzling stages via costumes, sets, and performance since his arrival in New York in 1994. An artist, costume designer, set designer, singer/songwriter, art director, and maker, Machine describes himself as a “radical queer emotionally driven, instinct-based concept artist and thinker trapped in the role of costume designer, sometimes.” Machine designs intricate, unconventional wearable art pieces and bespoke installations.
As a stage designer, Machine has collaborated with artists from the New York downtown scene and beyond. Machine’s costumes and sets were featured in Taylor Mac’s Pulitzer Prize-nominated A 24-Decade History of Popular Music (a documentary film about which is currently streaming on Max). In 2019, Dazzle was commissioned by the Guggenheim Museum and The Rockefeller Brothers Fund to create Treasure, a rock and roll cabaret of original songs with an accompanying fashion show, which debuted at Joe's Pub in New York City in the fall of 2022. That same season, he opened his first solo exhibition, Queer Maximalism x Machine Dazzle, at New York City's Museum of Arts and Design. He won the 2017 Henry Hewes Design Award, was a 2022 United States Artists Fellow, and most recently won the 2023 Obie for sustained achievement in design.
Machine is the recipient of 2023-2024 Roman J. Witt Residency, and has been commissioned by UMMA and Stamps to create his first major museum commission, a new sculptural installation called Ouroboros. The sculpture will evolve over three chapters from March through July 2024, and use trash recovered from local waterways as its primary material to contemplate our own extravagant cycles of life, death, waste, and rebirth.

The isomonodromic deformation plays a universal role in
connecting various research areas of mathematics and physics. In this
talk, I am going to discuss the isomonodromy theory for a new class of
Fuchsian-type elliptic second-order equations defined on the moduli
space of elliptic curves with the parameter τ ∈ H (upper half-plane).
We will observe that the isomonodromic deformation equation is
governed by a new second-order nonlinear equation with a deep
connection to the Painlevé VI equation but admits essentially
different properties from PVI. Indeed, the new isomonodromic
deformation equation, distinct from the Painlevé VI equation, admits
so-called movable branch points that can be explicitly determined by
their monodromy data.

This innovation promises efficient urban and regional transportation by bypassing ground congestion, reducing emissions, and enhancing connectivity. As efficient and safe transportation is vital for national well-being, we face challenges that must be addressed. Our research contributes to the development of a safe and efficient AAM operational framework by offering novel solutions for airspace management, contingency planning, and optimal traffic network strategies. This presentation will highlight two key chapters of our work: 1. Assured contingency landing management, providing solutions for distressed AAM scenarios, and 2. Centralized and distributed AAM traffic management, incorporating various constraints for seamless AAM operations.

In celebration of Women’s History Month, join Associate Curator of Manuscripts Jayne Ptolemy to learn more about the influential 19th-century activist Emily Howland.

Howland worked to advance abolition, African American education, women's rights and suffrage, pacifism, and more, yet many have never heard of her. Come explore her story and what the Clements staff have learned about her work and struggles while preparing a new and remarkable collection of her papers for public use. Through letters, photographs, diary entries, and more, we will think about the impact of her work, her personal life and struggles, and how women have shaped our history in ways big and small through the centuries.

Shota Kincha, Staff Writer, Open Caucasus Media

Zhanar Sekerbayeva, Co-Founder, Kazakhstan’s LGBTQ Feminist Initiative “Feminita”

Mohira Suyarkulova, Associate Professor, Department of International and Comparative Politics, American University of Central Asia

Tatsiana Shchurko, Post-Doctoral Scholar, Department of Women's, Gender and Sexuality Studies, The Ohio State University

Many efforts have been made over the past several years to diversify Eastern European and Eurasian studies. This new spotlight surfaces research that has been conducted by many scholars for much longer, highlighting their commitment to telling stories and honoring perspectives of diverse and minority communities. Their work reveals that while there is no unified queer experience in the region, there is often a one-size-fits all state response to the reality of queer lives in many nations within the region. How can a queer-studies focus advance conversations about decolonization in East European and Eurasian Studies? To address this question, Queer Focus will have six virtual panels featuring speakers from various disciplines and institutions. Panelists and participants will explore how gendered regimes were constitutive of Russo-centric relationships of power, defining the region and how we study it, as we collectively grapple with what it means to re-examine our current research, teaching, and institutional practices.

*Panel 6 of the series will examine the role and impact of queer activism within the region.*

The University Center for the Child and Family is offering a new virtual session for the ESDM Parent Training Group in Spring 2024. The Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) is an evidence-based treatment model for young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The group is designed for parents and caregivers with children ages 5 and under who have diagnosed or suspected ASD or a Developmental Delay.

The parent training group is designed to teach parents these strategies to increase the number of intervention hours that young children receive. A secondary goal is to support parents of children with ASD/Developmental Delays and help them develop a community of parents in a similar life stage. Since it is a parent training group, children are welcome but not required to attend.

Requirements:
1. In order to enroll in the group, the caregiver must have a child ages 5 or under who has diagnosed or suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder or developmental delay (e.g. speech delay, Global Developmental Delay etc).

2. Participating families must attend one group screening/orientation session prior to the start of the group, to ensure that they are a good fit for the group. This initial screening appointment will last approximately 30-45 minutes.

When: 12 – 1 p.m. Fridays, beginning January 26 (10 weeks).
Where: Online via Zoom

Prospective clients should call UCCF at (734) 615-7853 to schedule their orientation/screening appointment.

The health benefits of nature are attracting increasing popular and scientific attention, but specific impacts of global change on human well-being remain poorly quantified and difficult to predict. In this talk, Dr. Ricketts will describe ongoing efforts to estimate health impacts of land-use change in developing countries, using a unique dataset including 800,000 children in more than 40 countries.

To date, his research has revealed that nearby forest cover and protected areas improve several dimensions of children’s health, including water-borne disease, stunting, diet diversity, and malaria. In all cases, the impact of nature on health outcomes is stronger for more vulnerable populations. These and other studies can help to identify when and where nature conservation can constitute an investment in public health and social justice.

This event is co-sponsored by the School for Environment and Sustainability, the International Institute, the Office of Global Public Health, and the Institute for Global Change Biology.

A trailblazing world premiere production, *Ni une más* braids music, theatre, and dance to tell survivors’ stories of growing agency. From the tender “Te recuerdo” (I remember you) to the rumbling subway sounds of “Metro Asfixia;” from the ironic rap, “This Doesn’t Happen at Michigan,” to the foot-stomping chorus, “It’s Not My Fault,” this audience-engaging production is both mesmerizing and memorable.

Our production team – led by GRAMMY-nominated artistic director and composer Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra with award-winning journalists Ana Ávila and María Arce, and athlete Tad DeLuca – co-created new material for *Ni une más* with survivors. The title is based on a slogan used in many Latin American countries to stand up to domestic violence and femicide. As gender-based violence is a local and global health crisis, we move this often-silenced topic to the spotlight to transform trauma into healing power through the arts.

*Ni une más* was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan, and is co-sponsored by the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion; the School of Music, Theatre & Dance’s Research Catalyst and Innovation Grant; The Institute for Research on Women and Gender; the CEW+ Frances & Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund; Communications & Media; Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center; Sociology; Bethlehem United Church of Christ; and Avalon Healing Center (Detroit).

ISRMT seminar: Noncommutative stochastic calculus (March 18, 2024 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/119243 119243-21842464@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 18, 2024 4:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Integrable Systems and Random Matrix Theory Seminar - Department of Mathematics

Noncommutative or free probability is a branch of mathematics that is useful for describing the large-N limits of many N×N random matrix models. In this theory, classical probability spaces are replaced by pairs (𝒜,𝜏), where 𝒜 is an (operator) algebra and 𝜏 : 𝒜 → ℂ is a certain kind of linear functional. In such a pair, 𝒜 and 𝜏 are conceptualized as the space of ``noncommutative random variables'' and the ``expectation'' functional on 𝒜, respectively. The analogy with classical probability goes much further; indeed, there are notions of distribution, independence, L^p-spaces, conditional expectation, and more. My talk will focus on my recent joint work with David Jekel and Todd Kemp on developing a noncommutative theory of stochastic calculus. I shall frame the discussion around some joint work in progress with Guillaume Cébron and Nicolas Gilliers: applications of the theory to the characterization of large-N limits of solutions to N×N matrix stochastic differential equations.

Positive Links Speaker Series: Positive for Whom? Addressing the Elephant in the Room
Antoinette Weibel

Positive Links:
The Positive Links Speaker Series, presented by Michigan Ross’ Center for Positive Organizations, offers inspiring and practical science-based strategies to build and bolster thriving organizations. Attendees learn from leading positive organizational scholars and connect with our community of academics, students, staff, and leaders.

About the talk:
Most scholars in the realm of positive organizations share a common passion: we all aspire to alleviate some of the suffering in the world. Consequently, we are actively engaged in studying positive phenomena such as trust, compassion, high-quality connections, flourishing, and more. Despite this, many of us shy away from addressing a crucial underlying question: positive for whom and on what grounds? There is also contemplation on whether “positive” is indeed the most fitting label, as opposed to “good” or “for the common good.” Often, we adhere to the value-free label of social science, neither acknowledging the underlying value-driven nature of our work nor recognizing that by frequently choosing performance as the dependent variable, we implicitly align with instrumentalism and utilitarian thinking.

In the upcoming discussion, Antoinette will share her story and explain why she chose to directly confront the value question in her new project, “good organizations.” By adopting a distinctly virtue ethics approach, she emphasizes the need to qualify the term “positive,” to differentiate between flourishing and thriving, and to recognize that trust can be ethical only in conjunction with practical wisdom. Antoinette will elaborate on how good organizations view prosperity as a means to the end of collective development and good work, aiming to enable the good life of all stakeholders touched by the organization. Lastly, she will elucidate why she believes that we, as engaged scholars and managers alike, cannot exempt ourselves from contemplating values and ethics. According to Antoinette, coming to explicit terms with our normative foundation is the only genuine way to alleviate the suffering within organizations.

Student Watch Party: Watch this streamed session together with other students for an in-person community experience followed by a structured discussion about how to put insights from Positive Links into practice. Registration for the Student Watch Party is included as an option when registering for this session of Positive Links.

DSI Lecture Series | The Right to Speed-Watch (or, when Netflix Discovered its Blind Subscribers) (March 19, 2024 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/116008 116008-21836061@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 3:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Digital Studies Institute

Speed-watching, an understudied-yet-ubiquitous spectatorial mode, is often described by users as a productivity tool that can help them become digital “super-users.” This talk situates this emerging mode of spectatorship within longer histories of media consumption, connecting it to both efficiency and disability activism. Using Netflix as a case study, I focus on the recent public debate surrounding its failed attempt to add a playback speed feature to its streaming platform. World-renowned filmmakers pushed Netflix to shelve this idea when it was first introduced in 2018, claiming their films were not intended to be watched twice as fast. Yet, citing “requests from deaf and blind subscribers,” Netflix decided to add this feature to its interface in August 2020, when millions were sheltering-in-place due to the pandemic. This presentation asks what led to this decision, and what can the marketing discourse surrounding it teach us about how corporations monetize “accessibility.” Theorizing the difference between "time-shifting" and "time-hacking", I argue that speed-watching is a mode of survival enabling different users to advance a wide range of goals: media literacy, the thrill of speed, and avoiding a mortifying fear of boredom.

Neta Alexander is an Assistant Professor of Film and Media at Colgate University, NY and a former Assistant Editor of the Journal of Cinema and Media Studies (JCMS). Her articles have appeared in Journal of Visual Culture, Cinema Journal, Cinergie, Film Quarterly, Media Fields Journal, and Flow Journal, among other publications. Her first book, Failure (co-authored with Arjun Appadurai; Polity, 2020) studies how Silicon Valley and Wall Street monetize failure and forgetfulness. Her forthcoming book, Interface Frictions, explores how ubiquitous design features reshape users' relationships with their bodies.

Foundations of Community Engagement (March 19, 2024 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/107595 107595-21835956@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Sessions @ Michigan

Foundations of Community Engagement is an interactive workshop for students that introduces principles and practices of equitable, ethical community engagement. Participants will develop a deeper understanding of what the term “community engagement” means, as well as the many forms it might take - from research and course-based projects to philanthropy, activism, policy, and direct service. Across all these forms of engagement, participants will learn concepts and actions that promote equitable partnerships, center community-defined priorities, and disrupt entrenched power dynamics between universities and community members. Participants will also discuss real-world community engagement scenarios that ask them to apply what they’ve learned in the workshop to various situations.

**New for 2023-24, this workshop is an updated version of Ginsberg’s long-standing Entering, Engaging, and Exiting (E3) session. If you’ve attended that session in the past, you’ll gain additional knowledge from this session.**

Writer to Writer with Petra Kuppers (March 19, 2024 6:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/119215 119215-21842340@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 19, 2024 6:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Sweetland Center for Writing

Sweetland's Writer to Writer series lets you hear directly from University of Michigan professors about their challenges, processes, and expectations as writers and also as readers of student writing. Each semester, Writer to Writer pairs one esteemed University professor with a Sweetland faculty member for a conversation about writing.

These conversations offer students a rare glimpse into the writing that professors do outside the classroom. You can hear instructors from various disciplines describe how they handle the same challenges student writers face, from finding a thesis to managing deadlines. Professors will also discuss what they want from student writers in their courses, and will take questions put forth by students and by other members of the University community. If there's anything you've ever wanted to ask a professor about writing, Writer to Writer gives you the chance.

This month Writer to Writer presents a conversation with Petra Kuppers via Zoom.

Petra Kuppers (she/her) is a community performance artist and a disability culture activist. She uses social somatics, performance, and speculative writing to engage audiences toward more socially just and enjoyable futures. Petra is the Anita Gonzalez Collegiate Professor of Performance Studies and Disability Culture at the University of Michigan.

Her artistry is grounded in the twin experiences of pain and joy. She has lived with chronic pain all her life, but her love of movement expresses itself in multiple ways: pushing against established definitions of what dance can be, and realigning connections between movement and writing. Her experimentation in creative somatics have allowed her to create community projects of embodied dreaming.

Her third performance poetry collection, Gut Botany (Wayne State University Press, 2020), won the 2022 Creative Book Award by the Association for the Study of Literature and the Environment. Her fourth collection, Diver Beneath the Street – true crime meets ecopoetry at the level of the soil – appears with Wayne State University Press in February 2024. Kuppers also writes academic books. Her latest, Eco Soma: Joy and Pain in Speculative Performance Encounters (University of Minnesota Press, 2022, open access), has received honorable mentions by the National Dance Educators' Organization’s Ruth Murray Book Award, the British Theatre and Performance Research Association’s’ David Bradby Monograph Award, and was shortlisted for the de la Torre Bueno Prize by the Dance Studies Association.

Petra was a 2022/2023 Dance/USA Fellow and is a 2023/24 Guggenheim Fellow.

She is Artistic Director of The Olimpias, an international disability culture collective, and co-creates Turtle Disco, a somatic writing studio, with her wife, poet and dancer Stephanie Heit.

New regulations for drinking water are on the way! For the first time, the EPA has proposed federal limits on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS include a large class of chemicals found in cleaning products, nonstick cookware, firefighting chemicals, and food packaging, among other materials. PFAS contaminate many drinking water sources throughout the US.

We'll discuss current research on the health impacts of PFAS and learn what the new regulations say. What difference will they make? Our speakers include Ann Arbor Drinking Water Quality Manager Becky Lahr, as well as Justin Colacino and Jackie Goodrich of the U-M's School of Public Health.

Science Cafés provide an opportunity for audiences to discuss current research topics with experts in an informal setting.

Hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m.
The program begins at 6:00 p.m.
Seating is limited—come early.

*UMMNH would like to thank Conor O’Neill’s for 15 years of support for our Science Cafés. Their continued commitment brings U-M faculty into the Ann Arbor community to discuss current research topics.

Connection, collaboration, and creation occur best when a strong foundation of trust, transparency, and honest communication exists. This presentation, rooted in social psychology, illustrates base human interpersonal communication tendencies, explores patterned reaction/response behaviors, and provides tips and tricks to better understand one’s communication styles and needs.

We begin by highlighting and exploring the principles of mindfulness and emotional intelligence, and we will demystify the root emotions we experience as we navigate daily workplace and personal communication. Using a down-to-Earth, interactive approach that’s infused with humility, humor, and personal reflection, Emily leads the audience through Louise Evans’ Five Chairs Five Choices model of communication behaviors. Participants will leave the session feeling inspired and empowered (and a bit entertained), equipped with tools and resources for immediately applicable and continued mindful communication practices.

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: School of Social Work

Our next Curtis Center Health Equity Seminar Series features one of our esteemed External Advisory Board Members, Dr. Derek M. Griffith.

His talk is titled, A Vision for Black Men's Health and Well-being.

Dr. Griffith will discuss the fact that in the United States, federal policy and infrastructure fail to explicitly address the poor health of men, and particularly the poor health of marginalized men. This inattention to men’s health hinders the nation’s ability to improve population health, to achieve gender health equity, and to achieve health equity more broadly.

Expanding efforts to consider gender in federal policy and infrastructure to include men, naming men as a population whose poor health warrants policy attention, creating offices of men’s health in federal agencies, and utilizing an intersectional lens to develop and analyze policies that affect health would likely yield critical improvements in population health and health equity in the United States.

Using data from the CDC and the case of Black men, Dr. Griffith will illustrate the persistence of sex differences in mortality and leading causes of death and the importance of an intersectional approach to achieve gender and racial equity in health.

This event is free and offers 1 CE credit! The Continuing Education option is free, but requires participation in interactive elements and completion of evaluation following the seminar.

CW&T is the recipient of the 2022 National Design Award for Product Design from Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum. CW&T started as and remains the two-person design practice of Che-Wei Wang and Taylor Levy. With backgrounds in Architecture, Film and Computer Science, the duo met at NYU ITP where they began their scale- and medium-agnostic approach to design.

Since 2009, CW&T’s work has spanned from interactive software to human-scaled tools that enhance their relationships to work, life, and time. Their practice centers around an iterative process of sketching, prototyping, testing, writing code, machining parts, and building each edition themselves to assess their intuitions around improving their everyday experiences. Their projects have included devices that alter our perception of time, an electronics curriculum for artists, an astrological compass for space travelers, and objects engineered to last multiple generations.

Sharing their process with their community is essential to their practice. CW&T cultivates an ethos of openness through teaching and open source software and hardware. Their pedagogy extends into the home/studio where they host office hours to lend a hand, or offer insight to anyone interested in figuring out how to make something themselves.

Wang and Levy speak extensively on design and technology as a creative medium. They have taught courses on time, electronics, hardware, programming, inflatables, and morphology at Pratt Institute, New York University, and the School for Poetic Computation. CW&T live and work in their Brooklyn-based studio and prototyping shop.

Real zombies attack a hack director and a film crew who are shooting a low budget zombie film in an abandoned WWII Japanese facility.

Curator's note by Markus Nornes: *One Cut of the Dead* took Japan by storm in 2017, raking in a profit a thousand times higher than its minimal cost. Aside from the fun mix of comedy and shock, audiences were drawn by the premise: a one-shot zombie film.

Presented in Japanese with English subtitles. Read more about the film, including ratings, at https://imdb.com/title/tt7914416/

Moderator: Alexander Averbuch, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies, Harvard University

Speakers: TBC

Many efforts have been made over the past several years to diversify Eastern European and Eurasian studies. This new spotlight surfaces research that has been conducted by many scholars for much longer, highlighting their commitment to telling stories and honoring perspectives of diverse and minority communities. Their work reveals that while there is no unified queer experience in the region, there is often a one-size-fits all state response to the reality of queer lives in many nations within the region.

How can a queer-studies focus advance conversations about decolonization in East European and Eurasian Studies? To address this question, Queer Focus will have seven virtual panels featuring speakers from various disciplines and institutions. Panelists and participants will explore how gendered regimes were constitutive of Russo-centric relationships of power, defining the region and how we study it, as we collectively grapple with what it means to re-examine our current research, teaching, and institutional practices.

*Panel 7 of the series will provide a specific look at LGBTQIA experiences in Ukraine, especially considering Russia's war against the country.*

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Mary A. Rackham Institute

Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Sexual Assault Prevention and Awareness Center (SAPAC)
