Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Ceramics artists Yoshiko Takahashi and Georgette Zirbes discuss the influence of the Shigaraki tradition on their work and the intergenerational global exchange among American and Japanese artists that helped to pave the way for women ceramics artists.
This program is presented in connection with the UMMA exhibition Clay As Soft Power: Shigaraki Ware In Postwar America and Japan, on view through May 7, 2023. Known for its earthy tones, rough clay surfaces, and natural ash glazes, Shigaraki ware is celebrated as one of the “Six Ancient Kilns” of Japan, ancient sites of pottery production and cultural heritage in which wares have been produced from the middle ages to today .
Until the mid-twentieth century, women in Japan played supporting roles in ceramic production. After World War II, the number of women ceramic artists in Japan gradually increased as access to education and professional development expanded. A robust exchange with American women ceramic artists contributed to this shift as well. U-M Professor Emerita Georgette Zirbes was one of these American artists. By the 1960s, a notable number of women had founded their own ceramics studios, carried out every step of production from modeling to firing by themselves, and produced ceramics not only to earn a living but as a means of self-expression. The current generation of women artists such as Yoshiko Takahashi has inherited the legacy of the remarkable independence of Zirbes and others in her cohort.
Join these two artists along with exhibition curator Natsu Oyobe for a deep dive into their work and the influences that continue to connect them today.
The program will be followed by UMMA Feel Good Friday. Stick around for an evening of programming inspired by the Clay as Soft Power exhibition.
Yoshiko Takahashi was born into the family of Takahashi Rakusai, a lineage of makers of Shigaraki ware that started in the nineteenth century. She will be the first woman artist to succeed to the Rakusai name. Takahashi studied ceramics at the Kyoto Prefectural Ceramicists' Technical Institute and the Shigaraki Ceramic Research Institute. After graduating, she became a studio technician for the artist-in-residence program at the Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park, working in the stimulating environment of international and national artist exchanges. Now an independent artist in Shigaraki, she regularly exhibits her works in museums and galleries throughout Japan and the United States.
Georgette Zirbes’s artistic practice has been informed by her experience and research in Japan and Eastern Europe. After receiving an MA in ceramic art from The Ohio State University in 1964, Zirbes was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to Japan and studied with two masters of the woodfired, unglazed ceramic tradition: Fujiwara Kei (1924–1977) in Bizen and Takahashi Rakusai III (1898–1976) in Shigaraki, where she learned about asymmetric forms and interventions into clay surfaces. In 1987, another Fulbright grant allowed her to spend six months studying ceramic traditions in the former Czechoslovakia. While retaining her studio practice, she was a devoted educator and in 1970 she established the studio art program at the Residential College at the University of Michigan; she later became a faculty member at the University’s School of Art and Design, where she taught for thirty-five years. In 2006, she was named an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor by the University of Michigan in recognition of her dedication to teaching. A retrospective exhibition was held at her undergraduate alma mater, DePauw University, in 2017.

Intertwined Intimacy is a series of architectural sculptures ruminating on privacy and intimacy, and how the infrastructure of visible and invisible spaces influences communities, communications, and safety.
This work stems from artist Caroline Sinders' previous work combining research driven art and human rights analysis that responds to current technology systems by focusing on how the design of 'infrastructural' and 'architectural' spaces, both online and offline, impacts safety. By focusing on prototypian futures, Intertwined Intimacy observes impacts through public infrastructure, and open, digital commons inspired by mutual aid and open source technology. To generate this research, Sinders analyzed how structures, metaphors and engagements of privacy and security within technology impact mental models The sculptures create a labyrinth, allowing for a space of reflection and consideration for the audience, as the sculptures slowly become more and more opaque, offering areas of hidden solitude and refuge.
Caroline Sinders is the 2023 Roman J. Witt Artist in Residence. This annual international competition awards one residency per academic year to a visiting artist/designer who proposes to develop a new work in collaboration with members of the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design and the University of Michigan community. Learn more about Sinders' residency and practice in this Q&A.
Sinders is an award winning critical designer, researcher, and artist. She is the founder of human rights and design lab, Convocation Research + Design. For the past few years, she has been examining the intersections of artificial intelligence, intersectional justice, systems design, harm, and politics in digital conversational spaces and technology platforms. She has worked with the Tate Exchange at the Tate Modern, the United Nations, the European Commission, Ars Electronica, the Harvard Kennedy School and others. Sinders is currently based between London, UK and New Orleans, USA.

That Brown Show [TBS] brings together premier South Asian performance groups at the University of Michigan. Together through a variety of music and dance styles, we hope to promote a rich and unique culture, create a common stage for performance, and further develop an enriching community around South Asian art forms and performance. This year, TBS will feature Michigan Bhangra Team, Michigan Mayuri, Michigan WolveRAAS, Michigan Taal, and Michigan Sahānā Music & Dance. We want to show the community what we all have spent months creating, learning, and refining through an evening of spectacular performances on one stage. Most of all, we want the community to join us in our journey through the South Asian performing arts.

Prison Creative Arts Project presents an exhibition of collaborative photography at the Detroit Historical Museum (5401 Woodward Ave. in Detroit), open now through May 21st.

A public reception will be held on March 9th, 6:00–9:00 PM, with a panel of previous workshop participants at 7:00 PM.

We hope you will be able to see the exhibit, and please be in touch if you have any questions.

Humanize the Numbers shows the perspectives of men in Michigan prisons. The prison system regulates every part of an inmate's identity. Instead of using their name, they are given an ID number. Visiting room photos and mug shots are tightly regulated. Personal info is recorded: height, weight, etc. In the process, their humanity is denied.

This exhibit at the Detroit Historical Museum reveals the faces and stories of those in prison. It lifts up the voices of those who have been silenced by the criminal legal system. The Humanize the Numbers project gives them a freedom not normally allowed in prison. They share their stories with the world outside. By doing so, those in prison reclaim their humanity.

The Premodern Colloquium. Erhard Ratdolt: The Manipulation of Light in Fifteenth Century Mathematical and Astronomical Treatises (April 16, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101636 101636-21801623@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Sunday, April 16, 2023 4:00pm

Organized By: Medieval and Early Modern Studies (MEMS)

In his editio princeps of Euclid’s Elements, German-expatriate publisher Erhard Ratdolt included a dedicatory letter to the Venetian Doge entirely printed in gold leaf. The technological feat forces the viewer to participate with a light source in order to read the luminous text. Taking this notion of embodied reading further, I propose that both in his Euclid and later, in his astronomical compilation Sphaera Mundi, Ratdolt aligned diagrams on either side of a single folio. In the course of turning the page, light transmitted through the thin paper support illuminates both diagrams at once. This allowed viewers to compare related geometric proofs or to visualize overlaps in the orbits of celestial bodies.

Through an investigation of translucency and luminosity in late fifteenth-century Venetian visual and material culture, I consider how publishers mobilized technologies of print to exploit the material properties of paper. Similarly, I examine how contemporary epistemologies may have led viewers to look through the folio. I argue that producers of Venetian material culture were particularly skilled in the creation of these effects between translucency and opacity and that savvy Venetian viewers were attuned to the movement of light within and through familiar objects.

Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

There has been an increasing number of attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts across the country. Multiple states have introduced bills or taken steps that limit the administrative and pedagogical work of DEI, including a risk to affirmative action in the Supreme Court. How might we continue to advance our efforts? What strategies and solutions can be brought to bear in our current climate?

The newest installment in ALI’s webinar series will take place on Zoom, April 17, 2023 from 10:30 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. (EDT). The event will be moderated by Dr. Robin R. Means Coleman and feature panelists Dr. Katrice A. Albert, Dr. Robert M. Sellers, and Dr. Peniel E. Joseph.

The University of Michigan is engaging in a collective strategic visioning process to imagine our shared future for the next 10 years — our Vision 2034. The active participation of U-M students, faculty, staff, alumni and partners will be vital to the initiative’s success. Join us as we embark on this historic journey.

The collective visioning process for Vision 2034 will occur throughout 2023 alongside other important U-M efforts, including Campus Planning — which will explore how the physical campus must evolve to support the future of U-M. It will build upon the insights and lessons learned from other ongoing university engagement efforts including Bold Challenges, Bold Ideas, Culture Journey, as well as planning for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) 2.0. In addition, Vision 2034 will incorporate the strategic planning efforts occurring across the institution — including at UM–Dearborn, UM-Flint, and Michigan Medicine. It also will be informed by the 2023 U-M Audience Research Project findings, expected soon.

Our primary objectives are to:

• Engage the university community at large in crafting a compelling vision for our shared future, grounded in our mission and values. Learn how to get involved.

• Generate big ideas through town halls, surveys, focus groups and other forums.

• Incorporate key themes from recent campus-wide engagement efforts and other planning initiatives to inform the vision.

• Deliver a shared vision for charting the path of the university into the next 10 years.

• Enable university leadership to establish mechanisms to measure progress toward our vision over time.

The sessions available in this track offer multiple opportunities for feedback and idea contribution through a Town Hall format. A variety of audience groups & organizations will also participate through invite-only focus groups (not listed here).

Please note: Registration for events is currently limited to U-M faculty, staff, and students. If you do not see an event for your U-M affiliation, please check back at a later time. Additional engagement opportunities will be continuously added.

Caroline Sinders: Intertwined Intimacy (April 18, 2023 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/107057 107057-21815230@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 18, 2023 6:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

The Inclusive History Project (IHP) is preparing to study and document the University of Michigan’s past and to engage members of the U-M community in order to better understand U-M’s successes and failures in creating a truly inclusive university. Since November, a Framing & Design Committee of faculty, staff, and students from the university’s three campuses has been working to design a multi-year plan for the project.

The contributions of individuals across our campuses and communities are vital to telling an inclusive history of the university, and there will be many ways to participate in this shared project. Currently, we are seeking your thoughts and ideas about the IHP in planning the work ahead of us.

We invite you to join us for this virtual forum to learn about the IHP and share your feedback. At these sessions, we will make a brief presentation on the purpose and scope of the project and our planning process and then gather your input through small group discussions.

We are excited to hear your thoughts and hope you will join us!

Join us in community to practice mindfulness meditation, a life-enhancing skill that can be learned with consistent practice. This formal, largely-guided, practice utilizes evidence-based cognitive training that bolsters one's ability to handle stress, poor mood, and threat.  This weekly mindfulness practice encourages present moment, non-judgemental, awareness – noticing where your focus and attention are and continually inviting attention to current mind and body sensations in a kind and compassionate way.

Mindfulness meditation opens the possibility to pause, gain perspective, attend to the present, and respond accordingly. In our ever-changing, complex, and challenging world, mindfulness can provide grounding. As one form of contemplative practice, mindfulness meditation can offer a framework to support a more skillful approach to navigating the demands of being human and support practitioners to build resilience and take compassionate action.

Whether you are new to mindfulness meditation or are an experienced practitioner, each session is designed to offer guidance and support to assist you. All are welcome to attend weekly or drop-in as their schedule allows.

How will AI change our idea and practice of creativity?
Artists and musicians have long relied on their own creativity and originality to produce works that inspire, move, and delight audiences. But what happens when we introduce generative AI tools into the creative process? In this panel discussion, a group of experts will examine the complex issues that artists and musicians face when using AI tools, how these tools work, and what opportunities they can bring.
Discussion topics:

What is generative AI? How is it being used in creative activities, especially music composition?
How do we define creativity when human and AI work together to compose music?
How do we define intellectual property with AI in the picture?
What are the potential disruptions that generative AI tools may bring to existing modes of creative composition and how will this impact the future of the arts?

Join us for a thought-provoking conversation about the intersection of technology and the future of creative work.

This dance performance, directed by graduate student Njeri Rutherford, explores Black femininity, liberation, joy, and healing. It confronts Black identity through dance and celebrates dance forms of the African Diaspora.
The event is held in partial fulfillment of the University of Michigan Master of Fine Arts in Dance degree requirements. Supported in part by the William Braddan McClellan, Jr. Fund in Dance, EXCEL Enterprise Fund, and the U-M Dance Department.
In the United States, ballet, modern dance, and post-modern/contemporary styles of dance dominate the professional concert dance industry. Concert dance is a form that has permeated through American culture for over a century and is regarded as “high” art within American society or art whose intention is to be consumed by the wealthy and socially elite. While cultural dance forms such as West African dance, Jamaican dancehall, Afro Cuban folkloric, Haitian dance, and others are prevalent in cultures in many African and Caribbean countries, they are scarce in American concert dance where many descendants of those regions exist. “Gestures & Journeying” challenges these dance “norms” by centering the experiences of Black dancers and elevating the social perception of Black dance.

Heartfulness Guided Meditation (April 21, 2023 12:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88544 88544-21803330@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, April 21, 2023 12:00pm

Organized By: Information and Technology Services (ITS)

Heartfulness Guided Meditation is a weekly, drop-in program designed to help you nourish your spirit and heal your body and mind.

All U-M students, faculty, and staff are welcome to participate in guided meditation practice with a trainer every Friday at noon over Zoom (details to join are provided below). No prior experience with meditation is required.

Advanced Wellness techniques are taught on the first Friday of the Month and that session will be about 45 mins.

*What will you learn?*

The guided meditation practice involves three simple steps: relaxation, rejuvenation, and meditation.

Relaxation brings your body to a calm, steady posture creating a stillness at the physical level, and prepares the mind for meditation. We follow this with a rejuvenation method to detox the mind to let go of stress and complex emotions, and will leave you feeling light and refreshed. Lastly, learning to meditate by being mindful of your heart will connect you with yourself by listening to your heart’s voice.

*Why Meditate?*

While physical fitness keeps our bodies in shape, meditation is an exercise for the mind and mental wellness. In addition to the measurable benefits mentally and physically, many people benefit from an unquantifiable inner poise and harmony.

VIM VIGOR DANCE COMPANY, with The Department of Dance at the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre & Dance, presents PUNCH LINE, with choreography by Shannon Gillen and Jason Reese C., in collaboration with Tzveta Kassabova.
PUNCH LINE will be presented on Friday, April 21, 2023 and Saturday, April 22, 2023 at 8:00pm in the Arthur Miller Theatre, 1226 Murfin Avenue, Ann Arbor, MI, 48109. Tickets are FREE and available at the door starting at 7:30pm.
Through a prismatic lens of movement and radical storytelling, audiences will find themselves embedded in a world where stand up comedy meets human frailty and death. PUNCH LINE, by physical dance theater company VIM VIGOR, creates a living landscape from the distinctly human conundrum of knowing we are going to die. The sheer terror of ending combined with the electrified euphoria of feeling alive while we still can, PUNCH LINE laughs at death because what else can you do? Set against an original electronic sound score by Marshall Chadbourne, PUNCH LINE galvanizes the viewer into a cathartic experience of humor, angst and transcendence.
Concept, Direction: Shannon Gillen
Choreography: Shannon Gillen and Jason Cianciulli
Choreographic Collaborators: Tzveta Kassabova
Performance: Jason Cianciulli, Shannon Gillen, Tzveta Kassabova
Sound Score: Marshall Chadbourne
Costume Design: VIM VIGOR DANCE COMPANY
PUNCH LINE was made possible by a generous RCI grant from The University of Michigan. This work will tour to the prestigious b12 Festival in Berlin, in July 2023.

Are you interested in the efforts to restore and protect the Rouge River watershed? Join us for a Q&A discussion with John H. Hartig and Jim Graham, editors of the recent book "Rouge River Revived: How People Are Bringing Their River Back to Life" on Monday, April 24. After pollution from the Ford complex and neighboring factories literally caused the river to catch on fire in 1969, community groups launched a Herculean effort to restore and protect the watershed. Today the Rouge stands as one of the most successful examples of urban river revival in the country.

This event will take place in Facebook Live and Zoom webinar. The recording will be shared afterwards.

About the Authors:
John H. Hartig serves as a Visiting Scholar at the University of Windsor’s Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research, as the Great Lakes Science-Policy Advisor to the International Association for Great Lakes Research, and as a member of the Board of Directors of the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy.

Jim Graham is an award-winning journalist for the Detroit News and the former Executive Director of Friends of the Rouge.

For his PAT senior thesis, Tanner has programmed an array of effects that process the sound of the cello for performance. As a culmination of this project, this recital presents the various effects to demonstrate how technology can augment acoustic instruments and expressivity. The first piece showcases a harmonizer that re-pitches the cello sound into multiple voices of polyphony. The second piece is a composition for cello quintet that integrates various other effects simultaneously – to be performed with the four other seniors in Tanner’s cello studio. Finally, all acoustic sound from the cellos is captured and processed by contact-mic devices Tanner designed and built in the PAT workshop.

Kaleigh Wilder Trio (April 25, 2023 7:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/107761 107761-21816457@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, April 25, 2023 7:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

Baritone saxophonist Kaleigh Wilder has performed around the world, led her first album release, and now has plans to release two more albums as a bandleader with a New York-based record label—among several other ongoing projects.

Musicians Kaleigh Wilder, Ben Hall, Jaribu Shahid, and dancer Alexandria Davis will explore Afro-diasporic narratives that traverse oceans and endure attempts at erasure. Using rhythm, movement, timbre, melody, and cacophony, The Story Cuts Across What the Map Cuts Up celebrates what could not be subjugated or relegated to the margins. A continuous performance of original compositions, improvisations, and movement invites the audience to imagine not the physical map, but the stories that connect and produce our futures.

This performance is a “Pay What You Wish” event. That means that you can decide how much you would like to pay to attend. In most venues, an event like this would cost around $15-25 per person. Please enter the price you would like to pay per ticket, and the number of tickets you wish to reserve.

James Nelson, Director of Grants, will discuss Michigan Humanities Grants that are available to scholars in the humanities. Michigan Humanities Grants emphasize collaboration among cultural, educational, and community-based organizations and institutions in order to serve Michigan’s people with public humanities programming. These grants play a vital role in defining our culture, our state, our community, and ourselves. They are intended to connect us to Michigan’s rich cultural heritage and historical resources through initiatives that help the people of our state reason together and learn from one another.

This workshop will be particularly beneficial to faculty who are considering applying for funds through michiganhumanities.org.

The event will be hosted by Dr. Gregory Dowd, LSA Associate Dean for the Humanities. Ample time will be available for Q&A.

*Zoom captioning/translation will be provided with Zoom. Please contact Tracey Kuffel (tkuffel@umich.edu) by noon on April 19, 2023 if you would like to request other accommodations for participation.

Webinar: Digging Deeper into User Engagement to Build Collaborative Science Capacity (April 26, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/105600 105600-21812255@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, April 26, 2023 2:00pm

Collaborative science is an inclusive approach that creates many different pathways of science to application. While there are several key elements - design within context, dialog between researchers and non-researchers, and tailored processes and products - how these elements come together can look very different from project to project. As the NERRS Science Collaborative continues to learn alongside project teams and refine its approach to support collaborative science across the reserve system, it also seeks to understand the evolution of its own approach and impact.

In collaboration with the NERRS Science Collaborative Team, University of Michigan PhD student Lisa Maillard built upon a previous investigation of how Science Collaborative-supported teams work to document collaborative intents, processes, and outcomes, and what these three concepts can look like in “real world” collaborative science projects. This webinar shares the findings of this work - that the intensification and diversification of engagement processes have resulted in a growing understanding of the value and impact of collaborative science. Lisa will also share how this work is being translated into guidance for the program and resources for collaborative science practitioners and applicants.
