TITLE
Expectations modulate retrieval interference during ellipsis resolution

ABSTRACT
Memory operations during language comprehension are subject to interference: retrieval is harder when items are linguistically similar to each other. We test how such interference effects might be modulated by linguistic expectations. Theories differ in how these factors might interact; we consider three possibilities: (i) predictability determines the need for retrieval, (ii) predictability affects cue-preference during retrieval, or (iii) noisy memory representations affect next-word predictions. We first demonstrate that expectations for a target word modulate retrieval interference in Mandarin noun-phrase ellipsis in an electroencephalography (EEG) experiment. This result obtains in globally ungrammatical sentences – termed “facilitatory interference.” Such a pattern is inconsistent with theories that focus only on the need for retrieval. To tease apart cue-preferences from noisy-memory representations, we operationalize the latter using a Transformer neural network language model. Confronting that model with our stimuli does reveal an interference effect, consistent with prior work, but does not show an interaction between interference and predictability which contrasts with the EEG results. Together, these data are most consistent with the hypothesis that the predictability of target items affects cue-preferences during retrieval.

TITLE
An Intersectional Approach to Black Queer Language & Identity Performance

ABSTRACT
This talk furthers our understanding of how Black queer people use language to perform and create their identities. The intersection of Blackness and queerness is one that requires us to examine the ways race, gender, and sexual orientation influence a person’s lived experience. Following an intersectional approach, I argue that a Black queer person does not experience the world as either a Black person or a queer person, but uniquely as a Black queer person. To understand the role of language in Black queer life and experience, it is necessary to challenge strict boundaries between linguistic categories and social identities, while also considering the ways linguistic performance may be used as a tool of power and resistance.

Faculty Symposium on Anti-Racism Research and Scholarship at U-M (January 30, 2023 1:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/101823 101823-21802389@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, January 30, 2023 1:00pm
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: National Center for Institutional Diversity

The Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR), the Anti-Racism Collaborative at the National Center for Institutional Diversity (ARC/NCID), and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) invite faculty and postdoctoral fellows to a two-day, in-person symposium exploring anti-racism research and scholarship at the University of Michigan (U-M).

In March 2021, a campus wide focus on anti-racism research and scholarship was galvanized through the development of the Anti-Racism Collaborative (ARC) at the National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID) — as part of the provost’s anti-racism initiatives — and the launch of the two-year Anti-Racism Grants program by the Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) in partnership with NCID.. The complementary and shared goals between these two efforts include fostering innovative and interdisciplinary research that promotes racial justice and racial equity, supporting a community of anti-racism scholars, and amplifying the anti-racism research expertise among U-M faculty and researchers.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THE FACULTY SYMPOSIUM?
The Faculty Symposium on Anti-Racism Research & Scholarship at U-M is a convening of faculty and postdoctoral fellows who seek to challenge systemic racism through their research and scholarship, want to be in community with faculty addressing systemic racism from intersectional perspectives or other disciplinary fields of study, and/or want to engage in dialogue around institutional supports for faculty who engage in anti-racism research and scholarship.

Over the past twenty years, scores of universities have committed themselves to uncovering and reckoning with their ties to slavery as well as broader histories of exclusion and discrimination at their institutions. As the University of Michigan embarks on its own Inclusive History Project, this symposium will explore what it means for universities to undertake this work and what the future of these efforts might be. Panelists representing projects from Brown University, Harvard University, the University of Virginia, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison will discuss the principles that have guided their projects, the processes that have shaped them, the communities that have partnered with them, and the outcomes they have produced, including reparative measures.

The history of human-animal relations has become an important sub-field within the broader field of environmental history; environmental history in turn has become one of the most important fields within historical investigation today. Histories and travelogues on the Mongol empire mention a number of animals that are either unusual in themselves or found clustered in unusual human-animal contexts. Study of these animals and their contexts thus sheds useful light on the human-animal relations of the Mongol empire.

The Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AA&PI HM) at the University of Michigan invites you to celebrate our heritage month opening event! While the month is federally recognized in May, the campus community celebrates the month from mid-March to mid-April to align with the academic calendar. To celebrate the Pacific Islander (or, Oceanian) community, we also host PI Heritage Week dedicated to the histories, heritages, communities, and identities of the Oceanian community.

The kick-off is expected to take place at 6:30 pm on March 9th, 2023 at the Michigan Room in the Michigan League. This year our theme is Generational Change and Healing. Our Planning Committee selected this theme after conversations around wanting to build toward unity and increase self-awareness within our communities. The historical resilience of both the Asian American and Oceanian communities are clear and, despite the violence we have faced and continue to face, we choose instead to center our healing. Our communities often draw from inherited knowledge and wisdom, invoking inspiration and a push for change in the younger generations and generations to come. This heritage month, we hope to reinforce our healing by hosting events and conversations that build, uplift, and challenge our communities.

If you are interested in tabling and showcasing your art at the kick off, please submit the form here: https://forms.gle/QdYmVXdqragyhMdE9

Title: Una persona tiene cada idea: Scope ambiguity intuitions by Spanish/English bilinguals

This research examines the understudied question of how Spanish/English bilinguals interpret ambiguous sentences. In some languages like English and Spanish, sentences with two expressions specifying quantity, or quantifiers (for instance, ‘every’, ‘some’, and ‘a’), are syntactically ambiguous, meaning their structure permits two possible interpretations (see example 1). Although the construction is ambiguous, research suggests that speakers of these languages tend to prefer one interpretation that is more instinctive. Furthermore, some studies suggest that bilinguals may have a different intuitions of the sentence interpretation for each of their languages (Lee, 2009; Scontras et al., 2017). Importantly, language dominance, language proficiency and order of acquisition have been suggested as possible predictors of whether bilinguals do have a divergence between their two languages.

(1) A person bought every book

Interpretation 1: Say there are 10 books and all were bought by a single person

Interpretation 2: Say there are 10 books and each was bought by a different person

To date, research has not investigated how Spanish/English bilinguals interpret syntactically ambiguous sentences of quantifier scope. The current study therefore advances this research and also asks whether Spanish/English bilinguals show divergence in the two languages. Furthermore, this work attempts to determine whether a given factor (language proficiency, order of acquisition, etc) better predicts divergence in the two languages, if divergence arises. To answer these questions, an experimental study is being conducted with 60 Mexican-Spanish/English heritage bilinguals. Participants complete three tasks: Judging whether a sentence is true or false to determine how instinctive the two possible interpretations are, (2) a proficiency test in both languages, and (3) a language background questionnaire to collect linguistic information of the participants. Pending complete data collection, t-test and correlation analyses will be used to examine the results.

Egyptian Herakles and Syrian Aphrodite? Phoenician art and cultural exchange in the eastern Mediterranean (March 13, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/103995 103995-21808197@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 13, 2023 4:00pm

Who is “Egyptian Herakles” and why did Greeks use this title when referring to the Phoenician god Melqart? Why did the ancient Greek historian Herodotos seek the origins of Heracles and Aphrodite on the Levantine coast? In this talk I juxtapose these narratives of divine origins against the backdrop or artistic developments in early Greece, when art in the Aegean and elsewhere in the Mediterranean emulated Levantine and in particular Phoenician models. I will propose that Phoenician modes of representation (including Egyptian and Canaanite inflections) affected perceptions of cultural affiliations and origins. More generally I will address the issue of representation of the Phoenicians in Greek and biblical sources, positively or negatively, as agents of cultural change.

Title: COVID-19: Its effects on Latinos and the protective factors they may employ to cope
COVID-19 has laid bare the structural inequities that low-income communities of color face. Yet, public health recommendations for preventing the spread—staying at home and social distancing—only add another layer to the health disparities, socioeconomic disadvantages, and policy barriers experienced by communities of color. Guided by a resilience-based approach, this project employs a mixed methods design to gauge the effects of COVID-19 on Latinos whilst exploring the cultural and social influences that serve as protective factors in the face of psychological and structural barriers. As a first step, quantitative data was gathered through an online survey of 1595 Latinos from the United States and Puerto Rico. Initial analyses of the sample—which showcased vaccine hesitancy, collectivist ideals, and a general fear of the virus—were used to design a semi-structured interview protocol. The resulting qualitative data comes from one-on-one interviews with 60 Latinos from the United States. Integrated results regarding the effects of COVID, steps taken to combat COVID, concerns, cultural values, and hopes for the future illustrate the why/how often missing from quantitative samples and show that despite the many difficulties brought about by COVID-19 there is strength in the values and customs of Latino culture.

CARLOS VIVALDO

Title: Joint Coding of Sound and Speed by Auditory Cortical Neuronal Ensembles
The ability to process and act upon incoming sounds during locomotion is critical for survival. Intriguingly, sound responses of auditory cortical neurons are on average weaker during locomotion as compared to immobility and these results have been suggested to reflect a computational resource allocation shift from auditory to visual processing. However, the evolutionary benefit of this hypothesis remains unclear. In particular, whether weaker sound-evoked responses during locomotion indeed reflect a reduced involvement of the auditory cortex, or whether they result from an alternative neural computation in this state remains unresolved. To address this question, we first used neural inactivation in behaving mice and found that the auditory cortex plays a critical role in sound-guided behavior during locomotion. To investigate the nature of this processing, we used two-photon calcium imaging of local excitatory auditory cortical neural populations in awake mice. We found that underlying a net inhibitory effect of locomotion on sound-evoked response magnitude, spatially intermingled neuronal subpopulations were differentially influenced by locomotion. Further, the net inhibitory effect of locomotion on sound-evoked responses was strongly shaped by elevated ongoing activity. Importantly, rather than reflecting enhanced “noise”, this ongoing activity reliably encoded the animal’s locomotion speed. Prediction analyses revealed that sound, locomotive state and their integration are strongly encoded by auditory cortical ensemble activity. Finally, we found consistent patterns of locomotion-sound integration in electrophysiologically recorded activity in freely moving rats. Together, our data suggest that auditory cortical ensembles are not simply suppressed by locomotion but rather encode it alongside sound information to support sound perception during locomotion.

Title: Teacher emotions in the classroom: their mediating role between self-efficacy and teachers’ well-being.
In the school context, teacher self-efficacy beliefs are defined as teachers' individual beliefs in their abilities to perform specific teaching tasks at a given level of quality in a given situation. According to Frenzel (2009; 2014), both positive and negative emotions that a teacher exhibits toward teaching are influenced by the teacher's different experiences in the classroom and influence the teacher's well-being. The present study examines whether teaching emotions, such as enjoyment, anger, and anxiety, plays a role in explaining the relationship between teacher self-efficacy and well-being. A sample of 2698 Chilean teachers between 20 and 80 years of age (M = 41.4, SD = 11.1; primarily women, 73.5%) was used. A mediation analysis was performed using a multiple regression model with a Bootstrap method. The results show that the emotions of enjoyment, anger, and anxiety toward teaching mediate the relationship between Self-Efficacy and teachers' well-being. Thus, the higher the self-efficacy, the greater the enjoyment, which is associated with higher levels of well-being.
On the other hand, the higher the self-efficacy, the lower the anger and anxiety, which are associated with higher levels of well-being. The present study argues that emotions are an essential resource that enhances or decreases teachers' well-being associated with their self-efficacy.

Title: Sharing the Burden: Latinx Immigrant Parents and Teens' Socio-political Discussions and their Impact on Youth Mental Health

Background:
There is limited research on parent-child discussions about sociopolitical issues in the U.S. and how they take place. There is less known about the role of sociopolitical conversations as a protective factor benefitting immigrant youth and families. We draw on the Ecological Expansion of the Adverse Childhood Experiences framework to better understand how immigrant-origin youth are making sense of restrictive immigration policies coupled with cultural and sociopolitical messaging received from parents.
Methods:
Participants engaged in one-hour virtual interviews between 2020 and 2021. We conducted ten interviews with undocumented Latinx parents, and 10 interviews with their adolescents aged 13-17.
Results:
Three main themes emerged from parent interviews: 1) sociopolitical socialization and youth agency; 2) documentation status socialization; and 3) emotional and mental health well-being. Findings show that parents use storytelling to share messages about race, culture, and immigration, and provide counternarratives to the toxic sociopolitical environment. Four themes emerged from youth interviews: 1) sociopolitical awareness and action; 2) youth taking on a protective role; 3) learning about risks, injustices and privileges; and 4) mental health. Youth shared a desire for sociopolitical education, and reported a range of coping mechanisms against anti-immigrant rhetoric.
Conclusion & Implication:
Our findings provide a greater understanding of communication practices within Latinx mixed-status immigrant families, by drawing on both parent and youth reports. These findings can inform practitioners and researchers alike of the amplified systemic barriers felt by immigrant families during the pandemic, and the urgency of supporting them as they fight for their rights and dignity.

Title: Phenotypic Racial Identification in Socialization of Multiracial individuals
There is a phenomenon of multiracial individuals expressing a greater association with one of their ethnic-racial identities over another. These associations within Multiracial individuals are the resultant of perceptions of phenotype, which is largely framed by white supremacy (Thekkedam, 2013). This research endeavor aims to contribute to understandings of the effect of dissociation of identity on strong psychosocial implications by challenging current literature and research by decentering whiteness through framing multiracial identity formation as a resultant of oppression in white supremacy (Miville et al., 2005). Beyond decentering whiteness in our research this is a remediary effort to reduce associations between racial category and phenotype within participants while investigating the role of the proximity to whiteness in the socialization of the participants and its effects on their identity formation. (Khanna, 2016). The methodology involves accessing qualitative interview data with a sample size of (n=5). Participants include individuals that either identify as multiracial and express identification with one aspect of their race or ethnicity over another. The diverse set of participants ranging from Asian American, Hispanic - Black, African American - White mothers, to a mother who identifies as Mulatta and the smaller scale of the research compares across racial compositions and age of the participants by examining the sociological underpinnings provides this research with a novel positionality. Rapid and Rigorous Qualitative Data Analysis (RADaR) technique is the intended modality for analysis (Watkins, 2017)

Title: “Mis Amores”: Affirming Ethnic-Racial Socialization Practices in School Introduction
Latinx youth are the second largest ethnic/racial youth group in the U.S. and comprise more than one quarter of our nation’s current public K-12 students (Patten, 2016; U.S. Census Bureau, 2019). However, Latinx students (and other youth of color) are also increasingly the subject of racial harassment from peers and teachers (Rogers et al., 2017). Yet, schools can also be sites of affirming explicit and implicit messages about ethnicity and race, thereby affording opportunities for Latinx youth to develop their ethnic-racial identities, multicultural competencies, and critical consciousness to the extent that they are able to learn about their own groups, the experiences of others, and racial inequality and injustice, respectively. Understanding Latinx youths’ racialized experiences at school can thus provide crucial insights to educators and researchers seeking to support the healthy development of Latinx youth. In this qualitative case study, we describe the instructional practices and interpersonal interactions of Ms. Perez, an esteemed educator known for her exemplary instructional practices that uplift youths’ civic capacities while attending to their social and emotional learning needs. Using thematic analysis, we developed three themes of ethnic-racial content integration: (a) cultural content, (b) racialized experiences, and (c) youth empowerment. Our findings come at a pivotal moment, providing specific strategies and practices to inform future research and theorizing on best practices to support Latinx youths’ development as it relates to their identity and critical consciousness.

Join LSA Student Government and other sponsors in a free film screening, Americanish (2021), directed and co-written by Iman Zawahry, on Friday, March 17th, from 6:00-8:30 in the Hussey Room in the Michigan League. Viewers are invited into the home and lives of three marriage-aged women as they navigate the often turbulent waters of romance, culture, career, and family. Americanish delves into the complexity of trying to both honor and break from cultural traditions while balancing personal values and career goals in a society that does not always accommodate both. The film highlights different layers of womanhood intersecting with cultural and societal expectations. Following the film's screening, a panel of the director Iman Zawahry and lead actress and co-writer Aizzah Fatima will take place and have a Q&A portion. Snacks and refreshments will be provided! This event is a MESA AA&PI Heritage Month event.

Communities, Rural Economies, and Diet in Bronze Age and Iron Age Greece (March 23, 2023 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/105610 105610-21812264@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 23, 2023 4:00pm

Traditional accounts of the transition from Bronze Age to Iron Age in Greece identified a considerable drop in population after the demise of the palaces (around 1200/1150 BCE) followed, it was argued, by less arable farming, which led to a 'pastoral economy' in the early Iron Age. This picture was believed to be supported by the high value placed on livestock and near-eating in Homeric epic. While this view has recently changed among specialists, many outdated elements remain embedded in current scholarship. Debates over climate change's role in the disruptions that took place at this time also sometimes reflect these old, inaccurate narratives.

This lecture deploys archaeobotanical evidence and stable isotope analysis to demonstrate that in the Greek Iron Age, people continued to depend on plant-based diets supplemented by some meat and dairy. Although, expectably, there is considerable regional variation, relatively small-scale mixed farming agrarian regimes predominated during the Iron Age. It is evident that people in the Iron Age did not adopt pastoral lifestyles, keep more animals, or increase meat consumption. Instead, the data demonstrate the longevity of 'the Mediterranean diet' in its many variations and reveals some of the values people had over the long term attached to food.

The past few years have brought (and continue to bring) many threats to our democracy from the insurrection of the Capitol, overturn of Roe vs Wade, an increase in police violence, an attack on science, attacks on Critical Theories, and most recently the Florida HB 999 proposed by a 2024 presidential candidate. We know these threats impact each individual differently and we want to talk and learn about it! Join SCOR for the annual social justice symposium featuring a keynote by activist and artist Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. REGISTER HERE TODAY!

Zero Waste Week: Waste Justice Panel (March 24, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/106408 106408-21814482@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, March 24, 2023 2:00pm

Join us for a panel discussion of waste colonialism and justice in the linear economy.
This panel discussion will engage with the broad idea that our linear economies, in which items are produced, sold, used, and thrown away, are not only harmful to our ecosystems but to the communities (humans and non-humans) who live, work, play, and pray in these very same ecosystems. A key example of such dynamics is that every part of the process of making, consuming and disposing of single-use plastics is harmful to our people and to our planet. From the pipeline fracking needed to produce the raw oil to make plastics, to its transport to oil refineries, in cities like Detroit, and to petrochemical facilities, in cities like Houston, TX and St. James, LA, to its disposal in landfills, incinerators, and in low-income and BIPOC communities’ backyards in the Global North and South, the toxic impacts of our single-use plastic economies cannot be denied.
It is those very same communities, who are at the forefront of our unjust waste producing systems, who are also at the forefront of building equitable and just alternatives to these systems. The alternatives and solutions include anti-incineration struggles; community-based recycling and composting programs, food and secondhand goods redistribution services, sharing economies, and mutual aid networks; human rights campaigns to advocate for the rights of waste pickers and of families to safe working conditions and environments; the passing of progressive policies, like single-use plastic bans, to hold corporate actors accountable; and the list goes on.
The panelists, who will be speaking about their work at this event, emerge from numerous fields, such as community composting and recycling, social services, global policy organizing, and are integral to our waste justice movements. We hope that by the end of the event, attendees will walk away feeling more confident about answering the following questions for themselves:
What does waste justice look like on the ground in Detroit and other parts of the world?
How should zero waste strategies be integral to our climate action strategies?
How can I support these efforts and stay connected to them?

The 11th anniversary Marshall M. Weinberg Symposium will take place at the Michigan League Ballroom and via Zoom on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25, 2023. The theme of the symposium is "Computational Psychiatry: From Mental Circuits to Mental Illness."

Psychiatry has long emphasized lists of signs and symptoms for categorizing, diagnosing, and treating mental disorders. However, the inner workings of the mind/brain that produce and explain these signs and symptoms have remained obscure. The 2023 Weinberg Symposium examines “Computational Psychiatry”, an upstart field that aims to revolutionize psychiatry by addressing this gap. Theorists in this new field build computational models that explain in a step-by-step way how the mind/brain performs key mental functions, and they then demonstrate how signs and symptoms of mental disorders arise from altered “parameter settings” of these models. The Symposium features five leading theorists in computational psychiatry who will present their latest research on topics including delusional belief in schizophrenia and negativity bias in depressive disorders. The Symposium offers a chance to hear about the promise (as well as the pitfalls) of computational psychiatry—a field that has the potential to transform the way we understand mental illness.

Wieseneck and Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies Spring Symposium, “Mizrahi Studies at the Intersection” (March 29, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/102709 102709-21805021@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, March 29, 2023 9:00am
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Judaic Studies

The Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies is hosting the Wieseneck Symposium, “Mizrahi Studies at the Intersection" on March 29-30 in the Michigan League's Michigan Room. The symposium will be followed by a performance by Neta Elkayam and Amit Hai Cohen at 7pm on the 30th.

This event is a part of the Frankel Institute for Advanced Judaic Studies theme year “Mizrahim and the Politics of Ethnicity,” led by co-head fellows Ruth Tsoffar, U-M Professor of Comparative Literature, Women’s and Gender Studies, and Judaic Studies, and Ella Shohat, professor of Cultural Studies at New York University. This theme year brings together thirteen scholars from three countries who will explore interdisciplinary and intersectional conversations on the meaning of ethnicity in the study of Mizrahi (Arab-Jewish) culture. The group consists of a dynamic forum of scholars from a variety of disciplines aiming to reflect and further expand, diversify, and theorize the discussion of Jewish/Israeli society and culture.

This symposium aims at addressing some of the key issues raised by Mizrahi studies as conceptualized through a transnational, transregional, multidirectional, and intersectional prism. Rather than producing a Mizrahi subject in isolation, the symposium seeks to problematize any fixed understanding of Mizrahiness by highlighting the ways this concept is dynamically shaped by class, race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion, nation, and so forth. As such, the symposium strives to illuminate Mizrahi studies as a critical field not simply about the Mizrahim but also about decolonization of knowledge. It hopes to interrogate established categories by asking what constitutes legitimate knowledge when ways of knowing may themselves have to be reconceptualized in a discursive climate saturated with hierarchical, exclusionary, and even violent assumptions? Some additional questions posed by the symposium include: Which methodological paradigms and epistemic frameworks enable the shaping of fragmented memories into a broader and more relational narrative? What kind of obstacles do scholars face in the process of carrying out research involving archival documentation and oral transmission, when such data collection is entangled in histories of obscuring and silencing? What challenges does an academically normative discourse pose for those writing on subjects that touch on traumatic experiences and memories, at once personal, familial, and communal? And what lessons could be learned from more self-reflexive research practices and coping strategies in terms of future scholarship.

The participants will also reflect on the symposium in a closed discussion on Friday, March 31st at Rackham Graduate School.

This event is co-sponsored by the departments of Comparative Literature, Middle East Studies, Women’s Studies and Gender, Institute for Research on Women & Gender, and Anthropology.

Join us for an Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival pre-conference for librarians, educators, and cartoonists!

Learn from some of the most talented graphic novelists working today. Whether you’re an aspiring artist or simply curious about the creative process, join us for an afternoon of exploration and enlightenment as we uncover the power of personal narrative in graphic novels.

1:00 pm to 1:50 pm: Comics Out of Life: Writing With Our Own Voices

How does a graphic novelist discover their own truth and find a unique voice to express that truth through their work? What process do cartoonists follow as they sift through their personal histories, open a dialogue with their earlier selves, and engage emotionally-charged events from their pasts?

Author, editor and critic Irene Velentzas moderates a discussion with celebrated comics creators Jen Wang (Stargazing, The Prince and the Dressmaker), Gale Galligan (The Baby-Sitters Club series, Freestyle), and Dan Santat (A First Time for Everything, The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend). They’ll talk about their own creative journeys and the ways life becomes art.

2:00 pm to 2: 50 pm: Comics Out of Life: Conversations With Our Past

How do graphic novelists combine the stories of their lives with the political events that shaped them, and turn those into a compelling narrative? What does it take to reflect on highly personal experiences and connect them to larger societal issues? And how does all of that get reshaped into impactful works of art?

Moderator Raina Telgemeier (Smile, Drama) leads a thought-provoking discussion with Thien Pham (Family Style) and Nate Powell (Save it For Later, the March trilogy). They’ll explore the art of expressing personal stories that never lose sight of their context within the wider forces of the world. (Raina Telgemeier will not be available for signings after the discussion.)

Sponsored by: University of Michigan Library (Computer & Video Game Archive); Ann Arbor District Library; Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum; Kids Read Comics.

The University of Michigan will celebrate the 3rd Annual Juneteenth Symposium. The theme of this year’s event is Systems Check: Exploring Structural Solutions to Systemic Racism.

Juneteenth events honor the progress of African Americans in the U.S. since the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 while continuing to recognize the ongoing efforts to overcome systemic injustices and inequities faced by Black communities. This year’s celebratory events include a community prayer breakfast, a black film festival, and the Kidz Zone tent at the Top of the Park. A host of panel discussions will highlight topics such as housing discrimination and voter suppression, to name a few.

Our hope is to enrich the University of Michigan and Ann Arbor communities by underscoring the importance of Juneteenth ensuring all students, staff, faculty, and residents feel a deep sense of belonging. We hope you can join us for our celebration while we advance our educational mission as a university and seek to empower the community in a longstanding annual tradition to promote Black liberation and excellence.

In this talk, Keren McGinty examines the relationship between sexual harassment, gender, and multiple religions, highlighting women of different faiths. She explores the actions of American Jewish, Muslim, and Christian women who broke the silence about sexual misconduct and abuse of power by male co-religionists.

Keren R. McGinity serves as the Interfaith Specialist at the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, the umbrella organization for 550 congregations across North America. She is also a research associate at the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute at Brandeis University, where she taught American Studies. Her pioneering books, Still Jewish: A History of Women & Intermarriage in America and Marrying Out: Jewish Men, Intermarriage, and Fatherhood provided groundbreaking analyses about Jewish continuity by focusing on gender and change over time.

Advancing Antiracism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEMM Organizations: Beyond Broadening Participation (September 21, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/112153 112153-21828515@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 21, 2023 10:00am
Location: Michigan League
Organized By: Rackham Professional Development and Engagement

Every individual, regardless of race, ethnicity, or country of origin deserves the opportunity to pursue an education or career in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine (STEMM) in a welcoming, supportive, and antiracist environment. Yet, despite considerable investments to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEMM organizations, substantial barriers continue to produce systematically inequitable opportunities and outcomes. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine convened a committee, and developed a newly released consensus report titled Advancing Antiracism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in STEMM Organizations: Beyond Broadening Participation, which synthesizes the existing body of research on antiracism, diversity, equity, and inclusion (ADEI) in STEMM organizations and provides guidance and a set of recommendations for stakeholders across the STEMM enterprise to build ADEI into existing systems. This upcoming event at the University of Michigan will provide an overview of the entire report as well as the set of recommendations within it. This event will be followed by a smaller discussion session of the report over lunch between the speaker and students.

The story of what it means to be an American in every sense of the word except for one: on paper. This 85-minute, solo performance piece chronicles the story of Anner Cividanis’ journey of living his whole life in the United States as an undocumented American. The play captures the desperation that DACAmented individuals feel when considering the very limited options of adjustment of status, by being forced to navigate through a broken U.S. Immigration System. The play examines the mental, emotional, and psychological hardship one man has to endure in order to secure his livelihood in the only home he has known: Los Angeles.

A Vakalo Family Visiting Artist Presentation

Marios Chatziprokopiou, Assistant Professor, Department of Culture and Creative Media and Industries, University of Thessaly, Greece.

Considering translation (metáfrasis) as a metaphor (from latin translatus, that is a ‘carrying over’ or ‘carrying across’ of meaning), this presentation builds upon his own practice as a poet, performer, and translator, in order to unpack the process of translating as a key artistic methodology which can lead to metamorphotic acts. Through this perspective, which emanates from texts but also slides between the voice and the body, he will perform and discuss parts of his book ‘Topical Tropics’ (Τοπικοί Tροπικοί, Antipodes, 2019), his current projects including Schebermaschine, and his translations of Clarice Lispector into Modern Greek. Key elements are queer desire and lament; fluid genders and genres; fictive archives; corporeal biographies; polyphonic oralities; liminal vocal states; and the (im)possibilities of reappropriated myths.

Marios Chatziprokopiou has studied and worked in Spain, France, Brazil, and Wales and is currently based in Greece. Shortlisted for the State Literary Award for Best Poetry, his book ‘Topical Tropics’ (Τοπικοί Tροπικοί, Antipodes, 2019) explores issues of queer mourning and desire in connection to oral traditions. Blurring the limits between fiction and criticism, he has performed and lectured internationally. Marios has translated four books by Clarice Lispector, and has collaborated as a dramaturg with several theatre companies. Published in peer-reviewed journals and edited volumes, his research focuses on performances of migration and displacement, contemporary re-readings of the classics, performances of gender and sexuality, and rituals of lament. He works as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Culture and Creative Media and Industries at the University of Thessaly, Greece.

Dr. Amit Agrawal, project leader of the Ultrafast Nano-Optics Group within the Physical Measurement Laboratory at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, will be presenting as part of the Quantum Research Institute's Fall seminar series.

Seminar Description:
Optical control of quantum matter – from trapped atoms and ions to quantum dots and defects, is foundational for quantum information science and technology. Development of integrated photonics opens the possibility for realization of scalable circuits with complex functionalities, advancing both science and technology frontiers and enabling real-world applications in quantum sensing and precision measurements. Here, we present our work on scalable, robust and multifunctional nanophotonic interfaces to trap neutral atoms or address trapped ions. Our nanophotonic platform, replacing bulk optical elements, promises increased complexity and functionality in a batch-fabricated optical microsystem ultimately fully replacing the laboratory optical table to enable cold atom clocks and quantum computers.

Organized By: Department of Psychiatry

Join us for an evening with John Hendrickson, staff writer at *The Atlantic* and author of the memoir, *Life on Delay: Making Peace With a Stutter*.

In 2019, John Hendrickson wrote a groundbreaking story for *The Atlantic* about Joe Biden’s decades-long journey with stuttering, as well as his own. The article went viral, reaching readers around the world and altering the course of his life. Overnight, he was forced to publicly confront an aspect of himself that still caused him great pain.

But, he also learned he wasn’t alone: strangers who stutter began sending him their own personal stories. In his memoir, Hendrickson dives deep into the unique experiences of stutterers. Along the way, he answers lingering questions about himself—and about stuttering—that he was once too afraid to ask.

John will speak in conversation with stuttering researcher Dr. Soo-Eun Chang, director for the Speech Neurophysiology Lab at the University of Michigan.

This event will provide profound insights into John’s experience with stuttering and the future of stuttering research and neuroscience-based treatments.

An audience Q&A and book signing will follow.

After the talk, John will sign copies of his book, *Life on Delay: Making Peace With a Stutter*. If you don’t already own a copy, books will be available for purchase courtesy of Literati Bookstore.

Born in Florence in 1936, Dacia Maraini has for many years worked as one of Italy’s most committed and widely-acclaimed feminist authors. She has won various awards in recognition of her literary contributions: the Formentor Prize for L'età del malessere (1963); the Premio Fregene for Isolina (1985); the Premio Campiello and Book of the Year Award for La lunga vita di Marianna Ucrìa (1990); and the Premio Strega for Buio (1999). She co-founded the Teatro del Porcospino in the 1960s and established the feminist experimental theatre La Maddalena in Rome in 1973. Several films have been made from her books, and she herself has written screenplays for directors such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Marco Ferreri, Carlo Di Palma, and Margarethe Von Trotta. In 2013, Irish Braschi's biographical documentary I Was Born Travelling recounted the story of Maraini's life, focusing in particular on her childhood imprisonment in a concentration camp in Japan during World War II, and the journeys she made around the world with her partner Alberto Moravia and close friends Pier Paolo Pasolini and Maria Callas.

Sguardo a Oriente is a collection of reportages, memories, and stories about various Asian countries, including Afghanistan, China, Korea, Japan, India, Iran, Palestine, Pakistan, Syria, Tibet, Turkey, Vietnam, and Yemen. In this book, Maraini's language takes on a new voice, exploring the typical pace of travel books. Her writing style reflects that of her grandmother Yoï, her father Fosco, and her mother Topazia, who all loved to travel and tell stories about their experiences and the people they met on their journeys.

This event is part of the XXIII Week of Italian Language in the World and is co-sponsored by the Consulate of Italy in Detroit, the Dante Alighieri Society of Michigan, and the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures.

The conversation will take place primarily in English, Italian and non-Italian speakers are all welcome to join!

During this talk, Lorgia García Peña will discuss community building and public scholarship by focusing on her book Community as Rebellion.
Community as Rebellion offers a meditation on creating liberatory spaces for students and faculty of color within academia. García Peña argues that the classroom is key to freedom-making in the university, urging teachers to consider activism and social justice as central to what she calls “teaching in freedom”: a progressive form of collective learning that prioritizes the subjugated knowledge, silenced histories, and epistemologies from the Global South and Indigenous, Black, and brown communities. By teaching in and for freedom, we not only acknowledge the harm that the university has inflicted on our persons and our ways of knowing since its inception, but also create alternative ways to be, create, live, and succeed through our work.
Lorgia García Peña is a writer, activist, and scholar who specializes in Latinx studies with a focus on Black Latinidades. García Peña received a Ph.D. in American culture from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and an M.A. in Latin American and Latino literatures from Rutgers University. Currently, she serves as a professor in the Department of African American Studies and the Effron Center for the Study of America at Princeton University.

Dr. Sohini Chakraborty, a sociologist and dance activist, is the founder of Kolkata Sanved and was featured in the 2017 documentary Little Stones by filmmaker and former CEW+ Twink Frey Visiting Social Activist Sophia Kruz. Dr. Chakraborty’s decades-long pursuit of helping empower and reintegrate survivors of gender-based violence and at-risk children through the Sanpoornata approach to dance movement therapy by creating a grassroots network is the focus of her new book "Dance Movement Therapy and Psycho-social Rehabilitation: The Sampoornata Model".

Dr. Chakroborty was selected as the 2023 CEW+ Mullin Welch Endowed Lecture scholar because her life, scholarship, and activism show creativity, strength of character, and expansive vision. These qualities are shared with Elizabeth Mullin Welch for whom the lecture is named.

Dr. Sohini Chakraborty, an Ashoka fellow, sociologist, dance activist, and dance movement therapist, is the founder/director of Kolkata Sanved. A pioneer of Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) in India and South Asia, she created a pool of DMT practitioners from the grassroots level, including survivors, and envisioned and created the Sampoornata Model. She is one of 100 global women leaders recognized by Vital Voices. Her writing has been published in more than 20 national and international journals and books. Sohini was instrumental in launching one of the country’s first Diploma DMT programmes in 2012 with the Center for Lifelong Learning, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai.
