Join us to celebrate the retirement of Dr. Richard (Ricky) Rood!

An organizing committee of Professor Rood's former students have put together a unique program that features a sampling of students who he has advised or who have taken his classes. The program will focus on what those who are working in climate change and sustainability are doing professionally, how they got to their current positions, and how they envision the future working and living in a rapidly changing climate.

Our students and alumni would like to foster a rich dialogue with everyone in attendance on the issues facing our changing climate. Please consider their questions on the attached agenda.

Emcees Kim Frauhammer and Emily Upton will kick off the event with a panel of alumni followed by former and current students, faculty, and friends in a more open conversation.

This opening event will be followed by a lecture by Professor Rood, “Addressing Our Climate Future: It is what we know best.”

He will be introduced by Professor Rosina Bierbaum of the School of Environment and Sustainability, who has been a leader in addressing climate change in both government and academia.

A reception with an open mic, refreshments and drinks will follow.

Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Have you ever succeeded at an academic task even though you were convinced that you wouldn’t do well? Do you dread others evaluating your work or avoid opportunities for critical feedback? Do you have trouble accepting praise or acknowledging your accomplishments? Do you worry about being exposed as an academic fraud? Have you ever questioned whether you belong at Michigan? Thoughts such as these are hallmarks of impostor thinking and are more common among graduate students than you realize. However, they don’t have to overshadow your academic and professional journey.
Join us for this interactive, two-hour workshop workshop, during which we will share insights from impostorism scholarship and provide research-based strategies for combatting your impostor thoughts and feelings.
By the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

Define impostorism and highlight the variety of ways individuals and groups are most impacted.
Discuss individual, system, and institution level factors that contribute to impostorism.
Recognize maladaptive thought patterns and coping strategies that exacerbate impostor experiences.
Access tools and strategies to help interrupt your impostor cycle (all participants will receive a digital strategies workbook).

Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/gRAXn.
This workshop is designed for U-M master’s students, doctoral students, and postdoctoral scholars on all three campuses; therefore, only U-M graduate students and postdoctoral scholars are permitted to register for this workshop. While this workshop is being facilitated on behalf of Rackham’s DEI Certificate Program (DEICP), it is open to all U-M graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. For faculty and staff, please contact rackhampdeworkshops@umich.edu to ask if we can accommodate your attendance.

This workshop will examine how well-being and identity are interdependent. Participants will discuss how their identities shape their perceptions of wellness for themselves and others. On an individual level, how can students attend to their own well-being in a culture that doesn’t always promote it? From a leadership lens, we will look at graduate student culture and consider ways in which students have a role in influencing changes that impact student well-being.
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/qGWpM.

Who are you? What is your story? We all have a story — one that repeats daily in our minds, and drives every decision we make. Not all of us are aware of our story or its potential power. Become aware of your story and change your life. Begin by asking yourself these questions: Are you content with the way your story is unfolding? Is there anything holding you back? Do you have thoughts of not being enough? Does fear stop you from living your best life? This is where the process of rewriting your story begins. In this process, you’ll learn to: (1) Understand that you are not your thoughts, you are an observer; (2) Reframe previous hardships into opportunities; (3) Rediscover & embrace your authentic self. Are you ready to take the first step?

In the 1970s, Fereydoun Farrokhzad was a significant cultural icon, a sex symbol, and a chart-topping pop singer whose music and television programs were heard and viewed by millions of Iranians. A decade later, living in political exile in Germany, he still performed to sold-out audiences in Europe. That changed on August 7, 1992, when he was found brutally murdered in his apartment in Bonn. The Quantum Research Institute's Fall 2023 seminar series will be hosting Dr. Johannes Pollanen, Associate Professor in the department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University.

Seminar Description:
Interactions between a quantum system and its environment typically lead to unwanted decoherence and dissipation. However, if the environmental degrees of freedom can be sufficiently well understood, or even engineered, dissipation can be harnessed for the preparation and manipulation of such open quantum systems. In this talk I will discuss our recent results investigating a novel open quantum system composed of a superconducting transmon qubit coupled to surface piezophonon devices. In this hybrid quantum system we are able to engineer dissipation in the form of tailor-made phononic loss to control quantum information states of the qubit.

Neighbors said his dogs had been barking for two nights.

MORE (FACULTY): Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start (November 17, 2023 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/110087 110087-21824309@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 17, 2023 9:30am
Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

This workshop helps enhance the mentoring relationship between the student and faculty mentor by facilitating the development of shared expectations. Mentors and mentees work independently in separate sessions to identify their own objectives and styles, and consider strategies for dealing with possible challenges. Then, student-faculty pairs work together to develop a written mentoring plan as a means of codifying some of the most important elements (needs, goals, mutual expectations) of a two-way mentoring relationship. Over 82 percent of Rackham doctoral students who have written mentoring plans report those plans to be useful.

Part I: Parallel Sessions, 9:30 to 11:00 a.m.

Faculty-Only Session
Mentoring Across Difference 2.0 Faculty Only Session (for returning faculty)
Student-Only Session

Part II: Joint Session, 11:10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Faculty and Student Joint Session

Part III: Additional One-on-One Mentoring Time, 12:00 to 1:00 p.m.

Faculty and Student Joint Session

If this is your first time attending a MORE workshop please plan to attend the Getting Your Mentoring Relationship Off to a Good Start during Part I. Faculty who have attended a MORE workshop in the previous academic year have a few more options to choose from for their Part I attendance:

Mentoring Across Difference 2.0: A newly developed faculty only session is intended to engage faculty in deeper reflection about the issues, concerns, and situations involved when mentoring students from non-traditional backgrounds. Faculty are invited to consider specific actions to take in research and learning spaces that address issues and concerns pertaining to mentoring across differences. The session encourages and supports faculty to explore approaches and solutions that work best for them and their students in particular research laboratories, research teams, and in the research projects students are pursuing under a mentor’s guidance. *Note: We require a minimum of approximately 12 registered faculty members to run this parallel session.
Faculty and Student one-on-one Part II and Part III sessions starting at 11:10 a.m.

Registration is required of both the faculty and the student regardless of the option the faculty chooses. Separate registration for students is available at: https://myumi.ch/AWQdx
Registration is required at https://myumi.ch/NkD2q.
We want to ensure full and equitable participation in our events. If an accommodation would promote your full participation in this event, please follow the registration link to indicate your accommodation requirements. Please let us know as soon as possible in order to have adequate time, preferably one week, to arrange for your requested accommodations or an effective alternative.

Single spins associated with nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects in diamond have emerged as a promising and versatile experimental platform for quantum information processing. They can be used as nodes in optically connected quantum networks, as sensors for magnetic imaging with sub-micron resolution, for detecting and engineering quantum states of nano-mechanical oscillators, and even as probes in biological systems. Our group has demonstrated improvements to dynamic range and sensitivity of magnetometry using phase estimation algorithms, and carried out electron paramagnetic resonance detection and spectroscopy of single Cu ions on the diamond surface. I will also discuss a unique system in our lab where we magnetically trap and laser cool diamond microcrystals under high-vacuum room-temperature conditions for the first time, and discuss the path forward to observing quantum superpositions of macroscopically separated motional states.

Dr. Norbert M. Linke, Assistant Professor of Physics at the Duke Quantum Center (DQC), will be presenting "Building a Quantum World with Trapped Ions" as part of the Quantum Research Institute's winter seminar series on February 22nd, from 11am - noon in the Boulevard Room (1st Floor) at Pierpont Commons. A Zoom option is also provided.

Seminar Description:
This talk will describe the development of an atomic physics experiment into a quantum computer and quantum simulator. Our system is based on a chain of 171Yb+ ions with individual laser beam addressing. This fully connected device can be configured to run any sequence of single- and two-qubit gates, making it in effect an arbitrarily programmable quantum computer. The high degree of control can be used for digital quantum circuits, but also for analog and hybrid quantum simulations, including quantum-classical optimization routines. We operate this machine in user-facility mode, working with many external collaborators and growing its capabilities with every new application. I will present recent results from a lattice gauge theory simulation. Finally, I will describe our effort towards networking ion trap quantum computers in a city-sized network for new quantum technology applications.

Quantum Research Institute Seminar | Demonstration of algorithmic quantum speedup (March 21, 2024 11:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/120194 120194-21844208@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, March 21, 2024 11:00am
Location: Pierpont Commons
Organized By: Quantum Research Institute

Daniel Lidar, Viterbi Professor of Engineering at USC, will be presenting "Demonstration of algorithmic quantum speedup" as part of the Quantum Research Institute's winter seminar series from 11am - noon in the Boulevard Room (1st floor) in Pierpont Commons. A Zoom option is also provided.

Seminar Description:

Despite the development of increasingly capable quantum computers, an experimental demonstration of an algorithmic quantum speedup employing today's non-fault-tolerant devices has remained elusive. In this talk, I will report on three very recent demonstrations of such a speedup, focusing on how solution times scale with problem size. Two of the demonstrations use IBM’s superconducting quantum computers and involve modified versions of foundational black-box quantum algorithms. In contrast with recent quantum supremacy demonstrations, these quantum speedups do not rely on complexity-theoretic conjectures. The third demonstration uses a D-Wave quantum annealer and involves approximate optimization in the context of spin glass problems. In all cases, our work incorporates tailored quantum error suppression methods, which we found to be necessary in order for the quantum speedup to appear.
