165 years ago the Detroit Observatory received its historic refractor telescope. Handmade by Henry Fitz in New York, it was the third largest refractor telescope in the world. Its lens captured the light of countless stars and asteroids, helping astronomers explore a universe that we were only beginning to understand.

Join the Detroit Observatory for a closer look at the origins of its historic refractor and the person who made it possible. Program begins at 8PM and includes unique tours of the observatory, along with telescope observing through the historic refractor. Telescope observing is weather dependent.

Michigan Archives Nights at the Detroit Observatory feature compelling collections and selections from the holdings of the Bentley Historical Library, covering U-M history, state history, and more. Join us as archivists pull fascinating items out of the collections and share the stories behind them.

The American military intervention at Archangel, Russia, at the end of World War I, nicknamed the "Polar Bear Expedition," is a strange episode in American history. Ostensibly sent to Russia to prevent a German advance and to help reopen the Eastern Front, American soldiers found themselves fighting Bolshevik revolutionaries for months after the Armistice ended fighting in France. Because many of the American troops involved in the intervention were from Michigan, the Bentley Historical Library has extensive records on the expedition. Join us for Archivist Olga Virakhovskaya's talk about this historic episode, replete with documents and artifacts from the exhibition.

Olga Virakhovskaya is the Lead Archivist for Collections Management at the Bentley Historical Library. She oversees the process of preparation of collections for use by Bentley's researchers, as well as creating collection guides and catalog records. A native of St. Petersburg, Russia, Olga holds a BA in Sociology from Simmons University in Boston; M.A. in Russian and East European Studies from the University of Michigan, and a Master in Library and Information Science from Southern Connecticut State University. She joined the Bentley in 2007. Archives related to the American North Russia Expeditionary Force, or the Polar Bears archives, are among Olga's favorite Bentley collections. Her other favorite collections include archives related to the University of Michigan Symphony Band's 1961 tour of the Soviet Union; as well as collections related to civil rights and accessibility rights activism in Michigan. Olga's current professional interests include the issues of ethics and privacy in archives.

The Detroit Observatory is excited to host Dean Regas, Astronomer at the Cincinnati Observatory, for his talk on Pluto's past history as a planet.

"Are you still mad about what astronomers did to Pluto? Do you still think it is a planet? Chances are you're a grown up. When kids get excited about everything they are learning in astronomy, they are tired of hearing about Pluto. This is the guide for kids to break it to you - that Pluto is not a planet - in a way even you can understand. Based on astronomer Dean Regas' new book, he'll follow the history of Pluto, how cool of a world it is, and why it's not a planet."

Night sky observing with the observatory telescopes will follow the talk, weather permitting.

What does it mean that U-M's first president, Henry Philip Tappan, wanted to turn Michigan into a "true university"?  How has student activism remade Michigan over the decades?  How did one of the nation's most prestigious student literary awards come to U-M?  What does it mean to be a leader and best -- on the playing field or in the laboratory?  And, how should you depict U-M's history?  For its 2017 bicentennial, the University of Michigan collaborated with Detroit Public Television to produce ten mini-documentaries covering questions such as these from U-M's history.  What do those videos look like six years later, given so many changes in the University and the world? For this movie night, we will screen several videos from the series, and our panel will discuss those videos and the series as a whole.  The panel will consist of Fran Blouin and Kim Clarke, who both appeared in many of the videos, and Gary Krenz, who directed the University's bicentennial.

As with all public events at the Observatory, this movie night will include tours of the building by our student docents, with observing if weather permits.

"Keeping resistance alive": Chandler Davis and Academic Freedom at Michigan (February 2, 2023 7:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/103293 103293-21806753@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, February 2, 2023 7:00pm
Location: Detroit Observatory
Organized By: Bentley Historical Library

H. Chandler Davis — courageous, stalwart and lifelong champion of academic and intellectual freedom in the face of persecution, including his own imprisonment — passed away on September 24, 2022, at the age of 96. He was a former instructor at the University of Michigan who, in 1954, was called to testify before the House Committee on Un-American Activities. He and others from U-M l were “unfriendly witnesses, refusing to confess” their political dissent. Davis, unlike the others, based his refusal to answer only on the First Amendment, waiving his protection under the Fifth Amendment. Thereby he deliberately invited a citation for Contempt of Congress, so as to give himself standing to argue in court that the Committee’s proceedings were unconstitutional. He got the citation, but he did not prevail in court; his appeals were exhausted in 1959 and he served prison time in 1960. This Making Michigan will reflect on Davis’s life, actions and legacy at U-M and beyond and will seek to understand and recognize his contributions. Panelists include Steve Batterson, author of a forthcoming bio of Davis; Peggie Hollingsworth, founding chair and longtime director of the Academic Freedom Lecture Fund; and Alan Wald, expert on the political left in the US and Davis's contributions to it.

This event is both in-person at the Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory on the U-M campus and virtually on YouTube.

As with other Detroit Observatory events, in-person attendees may tour the Observatory after the conclusion of the panel, with stargazing if weather permits.

Can a universal library be achieved? It is an age-old dream. Google Books and HathiTrust have endeavored to fulfill it in the modern age. They are now well-established digital archives, used by citizens, scholars, and students from around the world. The path to their creation was filled with aspirations and visions, obstacles and hurdles, negotiations and compromises. And the University of Michigan was at the center of these and other efforts in library digitization. Please join us for discussion with a panel of individuals who were intimately involved in the process: Paul Courant, who as U-M Provost at the time shaped a visionary response to the opportunities of digitization and Google in particular; Wendy Pradt Lougee, who as head of the Graduate Library and of Digital Library Services spearheaded electronic access and nurtured innovative approaches to it; John Wilkin, a leader in digital humanities who provided leadership in negotiating critical understandings and agreements concerning usage of digital material; and Roger Schonfeld, co-author of Along Came Google: A History of Library Digitization, which gives a comprehensive account of this important development in the history of modern access to knowledge.

As with all events at the Detroit Observatory, visitors are invited to tour the Observatory after the event, with observing if the weather permits.

Paul Courant is the Edward M. Gramlich Distinguished University Professor Emeritus of Economics and Public Policy, Harold T. Shapiro Collegiate Professor Emeritus of Public Policy, AND Arthur F. Thurnau Professor Emeritus of Economics and Information at the University of Michigan. Among many roles at U-M, Courant has served as provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, as university librarian and dean of libraries, and as director of the Institute of Public Policy Studies (predecessor of the Ford School). His academic work has recently focused on economic and policy questions relating to universities, libraries and archives, and the effects of new information technologies. He was a founding board member of both the HathiTrust Digital Library and the Digital Public Library of America.

Wendy Pradt Lougee served as University Librarian and Dean of Libraries, and McKnight Presidential Professor at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, retiring in 2020. Prior to her appointment at the University of Minnesota in 2002, Lougee held several positions at the University of Michigan over a 20-year period, including Associate Director for Digital Library Services. Her work in launching and developing a digital library program at Michigan was recognized with the American Library Association’s Hugh Atkinson Award. Her research and publications have focused on digital library development, information economics, assessment of research behavior, virtual organizations, and e-research.

Roger C. Schonfeld is the vice president of organizational strategy for ITHAKA and of Ithaka S+R’s libraries, scholarly communication, and museums program. With Deanna Marcum, he wrote Along Came Google: A History of Library Digitization (Princeton University Press, 2021), examining structural impediments to digital strategy and the role of an outside catalyst in fostering digitization among research libraries. Roger was previously at The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and currently serves board member for the Center for Research Libraries.

John Wilkin is the Chief Executive Officer of Lyrasis. Prior to joining Lyrasis, Wilkin served as the Dean of Libraries at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign from 2013-2022, as well as UIUC’s Interim Provost from 2017-2018. He was the founding executive director of HathiTrust and served in that capacity from 2008 until 2013. Over the course of his career at the Universities of Michigan and Virginia, Wilkin was an early leader in the development of digital libraries, focusing on combining large-scale discovery with preservation strategies. He collaborated in creating the first legal agreement for the Google Books project. His focus on copyright and preservation played a pivotal role in HathiTrust’s Fair Use strategy, which was successfully defended in court and underpins HathiTrust today.

Science@DO is joined by U-M Astronomy Professor Emeritus Pat Seitzer to share the story of a giant telescope mirror that once lived in the Detroit Observatory basement and found a home in a telescope across the Atlantic Ocean.

"In the 1930s the University of Michigan planned a 98-inch reflecting telescope to be located near Dexter in Michigan. The 98-inch mirror was delivered (as part of the mirror development program for the 200-inch Palomar telescope). Sadly, World War II and the death of Heber Curtis (who championed the project) put an end to the project. The mirror was stored in the basement of the Detroit Observatory for many years, and eventually was sent to the UK where it became the first mirror in the Isaac Newton telescope at Herstmonceux. When that telescope was moved to the Canary Islands, the mirror was put on display outside at the Herstmonceux Science Centre, a piece of history of Michigan astronomy in the UK. I'll present the details of this marvelous history, including how the 0.6-m Curtis-Schmidt telescope of the U-M now in Chile figures into this."

Talk begins at 7PM. The historic Detroit Observatory will be open for tours following the talk. Telescope observing will be available, weather permitting.

How do you build a 40-foot-long portable telescopic camera, and what can you do with it? How did U-M’s first African American PhD astronomer pursue his effort to solve the “painfully absurd” mystery of what makes the stars shine? Where was William Fletcher — one of the first U-M Regents and the first Michigan Supreme Court chief justice — buried and why did no one know for a hundred years?

The Detroit Observatory is excited to host our first History Roundtable! The roundtable will feature presentations by three of our student docents, Eva Chavez, Sophia Grant, and Bennett Walling. Join us for discussion of topics like those above, and learn about our student docent program and the range of activities that our docents undertake.

Refreshments will be provided.

As with all of our events, the Observatory will be open for tours following the panel discussion, with observing if weather permits.

When you think of the University of Michigan, do you think of poetry? You should, because U-M has been home to some of the great poets of the 20th century -- and now the 21st as well. Robert Frost, Theodore Roethke, Robert Hayden, W.H. Auden, Jane Kenyon, and Frank O'Hara have all been affiliated with Michigan. This great tradition started in the 1920s, when Frost served as the University's first Fellow in Creative Arts. And it is a tradition continued by contemporary poets who studied at U-M and who are now at the center of conversations about American poetry -- individuals such as Victoria Chang, francine j. harris, and Jaswinder Bolina. Join us to learn from Cody Walker about U-M's rich history of poetic writing.

Cody Walker directs the University of Michigan English Department’s Undergraduate Program in Creative Writing. He also directs the Bear River Writers’ Conference in Northern Michigan. The author of three poetry collections, including The Self-Styled No-Child (Waywiser Press, 2016), his work appears in The Yale Review, The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, and two editions of The Best American Poetry series. His awards include the James Boatwright III Prize for Poetry from Shenandoah, the Howard Mosher Short Fiction Prize from Hunger Mountain, and residency fellowships from the University of Arizona Poetry Center, the Amy Clampitt Fund, and the Sewanee Writers’ Conference. A longtime writer-in-residence in Seattle Arts & Lectures’ Writers in the Schools program, he was elected Seattle Poet Populist in 2007. In 2013 he coedited Alive at the Center: Contemporary Poems from the Pacific Northwest (Ooligan Press). At the University of Michigan, he’s been a UMS-Mellon Fellow and a Michigan Roads Scholar. This summer he’ll be a fellow at the Institute for the Humanities.

While you might not call the Detroit Observatory if an asteroid hits your car, we can help illuminate the history of asteroid discovery across the 19th century! The Astronomers of U-M's Detroit Observatory were responsible for the discovery and study of many asteroids in our solar system and we are lucky to still have the telescopes and scientific instruments that helped them complete this work. Join us Friday, June 30 for a talks and presentations around our history with asteroids, along with demos of our beautiful 19th century telescopes. We will also be showing images of asteroids and comets taken through our historic Fitz telescope. If weather permits, we will also include night sky observing through our telescopes.

Seeing in Depth programs are a chance to take a closer look at some of the people, places, and sciences from the observatory's history. Talks and presentations feature observatory staff and begin at 8PM. Telescope observing is weather dependent and will begin after sunset.

International Asteroid Day is dedicated to bring public awareness to the hazards of asteroid impacts, crisis communications around asteroid impacts, and the ongoing search for asteroids in our solar system that could be dangerous to Earth.

Teacher, columnist, social justice activist, politician, advisor, director of several public agencies, and more: Ann Arbor native and U-M alum Josephine Fellows Gomon (LSA 1913) had an impact on Detroit, on Michigan, and on social justice across the nation -- an impact matched by few others. Join us for a presentation by Michelle McClellan and learn about Gomon's life and work in the context of women's roles in the early and mid 20th century, including her involvement in the birth control movement and her service as director of women personnel at the Willow Run bomber plant during WWII. Find out why the Detroit Free Press called her "the City's Conscience."

Michelle McClellan is the Johanna Meijer Magoon Principal Archivist at the Bentley Historical Library, University of Michigan. She serves as the field archivist for the Michigan Historical Collections, aiming to preserve diverse stories from across the state. Michelle earned her Ph.D. in American history from Stanford University and her M.S.I. from the University of Michigan. Before coming to the Bentley, Michelle worked in academia, museums, and historic preservation. She has published on the history of women and medicine, on “Little House” heritage tourism, and on how museums and historic sites can highlight formerly hidden stories. Most recently, she co-authored “Not Even Past: Archiving 2020 in Real Time” with Aprille McKay, which appeared in the volume Being Human during COVID-19 (University of Michigan Press, 2021).

Historical sources belong to everyone. This workshop invites community members to not only engage with the archives but even reshape them! Imagine combining your own experiences with a copy of a historical photo to create art that is brand new.

During the workshop, archivists from the Bentley Historical Library will teach participants about finding and understanding archival photos.

Guest artist Avery Williamson will then lead a hands-on workshop where participants create collage art with images from the Bentley’s archival collections about the Ann Arbor area’s community life.

Avery explains, “I’m drawn to the fragments and remnants that I encounter in the archive: a sly look between two people in the corner of a photograph, a bit of handwriting in the margin of a typed document. I'm excited to work with the Bentley Historical Library and their rich collections to introduce participants to my collage practice. Together we'll look closely at the archive to craft new stories about the past.”

This workshop welcomes members of the Ann Arbor community ages 14+ as well as UM students, staff, and faculty. Dinner provided.

Science@DO is joined by U-M Astronomy Professor Michael Meyer to share the story of how Michigan got involved with the biggest optical telescope in the world.

UM’s first president Henry Tappan realized the value of research infrastructure,

commissioning one of the largest telescopes of its time for Detroit Observatory.

That tradition has continued to inspire discoveries through the decades using

the MDM Observatories in Arizona, and the Magellan Observatory in Chile. Now UM

has joined four instrument consortia to build a suite of instruments for the 39 meter

ELT which will be the largest telescope of its kind when completed late this decade.

The ELT will have over x30 the light gathering power of NASA’s JWST and over

x15 the fineness of detail of the Hubble Space Telescope. UM astronomers

will participate in the exciting discoveries it will enable from observations

of the first stars and galaxies formed early in the Universe to discovery

and characterization of planets like Earth around the very nearest stars

to the Sun.

Prof. Michael Meyer has more than 25 years of international scientific research experience, in the fields of galactic and infrared astronomy, as well as the formation, evolution, and characterization of planetary systems (and associated implications on the prospects for life in the Universe). He has experience participating in the development of ground- and space-based instrumentation, including both the NIRCam and NIRISS instruments for the James Webb Space Telescope as well as high contrast imaging systems/spectrographs for 6-10 meter telescopes and next generation extremely large telescopes.

Talk begins at 7PM. The historic Detroit Observatory will be open for tours following the talk. Telescope observing will be available, weather permitting.

Arts & Resistance: "Reimagining Mars: From 'Canals' to the Russian Revolution"

Sanil Mittal, LSA Astronomy and Physics; Docent, Judy and Stanley Frankel Detroit Observatory

Thursday, October 12, 2023; 7:00 pm

This talk will dive deep into the so-called "canals" of Mars -- first described in 1877 by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli -- and how they made Mars a central landscape in many works of fiction in the late 19th and early 20th century. We will see some examples of cultural and artistic interpretation of Mars and the canals in science fiction and the impact of such representations on progressive politics and revolution, primarily in the early and mid 20th century. The talk is presented as part of the LSA Arts & Resistance Theme Semester.

Sanil Mittal is a Junior in LSA majoring in Astronomy and Astrophysics and Interdisciplinary Physics with a minor in Business. He is a student docent at the Detroit observatory and has imaged and processed many of the images taken through the Henry Fitz Telescope. He is also engaged in making astronomy more accessible to the public with his work as the president of the Student Astronomical Society on campus. He has previously given a talk on how Mars has been depicted in Science Fiction, and here he expands on that idea.

As with all Observatory events, the Observatory will be open for tours and observing, weather permitting, following the talk.

More Than "First Do No Harm": Modeling Global Engagement with the U-M/Ghana Partnership

Timothy R.B. Johnson, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women's & Gender Studies

Thursday, October 19, 2023; 7:00 pm

In 1986, Tim Johnson, then chair of obstetrics and gynecology in the U-M Medical School, traveled to Ghana as part of an initial group of Americans to reestablish relationships in medicine. The experience transformed him. Confronted with a shockingly high rate of maternal deaths that could have been prevented in the United States, Dr. Johnson launched a partnership with Ghanaian institutions for training Ob/Gyn health workers -- an unusual and singularly successful partnership, between U-M and Ghana, that continues to this day. The Ob/Gyn partnership led to further collaborations between U-M and Ghana, in other medical fields and beyond, including the social sciences and humanities. We are very excited to host this session with Dr. Johnson in connection with his new book on the partnership, More Than "First Do No Harm," which demonstrates that the partnership serves as vital model for global health collaborations.

Timothy Johnson MD is Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s & Gender Studies at the University of Michigan where he was Bates Professor of the Diseases of Women and Children and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for twenty-four years. He is a high- risk obstetrician, and his research interests are fetal behavior, prenatal care, medical education and capacity building for health, global women’s health, global health ethics, and assessment and prevention of sexual harassment in academic medicine. He is active in international teaching and training. In 2022 he received the (UM) President’s Award for Distinguished Service in International Education. He has authored over 300 articles, chapters and books, and is an elected member of the (US) National Academy of Medicine.

For those attending in person, the event will be followed by tours of the Observatory, with observing if weather permits.

Seeing in Depth provide a more intimate and intensive experience than our regular open houses. Registration is limited to 40 guests, which allows everyone to have more time in the dome and at the telescope, if weather permits observing. The event is built around a particular theme which links the history of the Observatory and the University to modern astronomy and observing the heavens.

October's event will focus on the observatory's second director, James Watson. During his time at the observatory, Watson discovered 22 asteroids, making him one of the most successful asteroid finders in history. This program includes a talk about Watson's journey to the 1878 solar eclipse to search for a new planet, discussions on Watson's unique life story, and demonstrations of the Henry Fitz refractor. If weather permits, we will be observing some of the asteroids that Watson discovered using the Fitz refractor.
