Thank you so much for your interest in Relevé Dance Company! We are holding our fall semester auditions on Monday, September 12th at 8:00-9:30 PM! Auditions will be held in the Union Idea Hub Studio 2401. This is located directly upstairs from the Sweetwaters courtyard. Before attending, we ask that you please fill out this google form individually. We want to get to know a little bit about you and your dance experience before auditions. In addition, we need to know exactly how many people to expect in order to follow the space capacity (and so you all have room to dance of course!) That being said, please only fill out the google form if you are certain you can attend. To give you an idea of what to expect at auditions, we'll do a warm-up and stretch, some technique across the floor, and finally a choreographed contemporary combination taught by one of our members and performed in groups in the center. We recommend bringing jazz shoes or your preferred dance shoes if you can as we’ve noticed dancing in socks in this building has been a bit slippery. Please do not come to auditions if you are feeling sick, and email relevedanceumich@gmail.com to make alternative arrangements. We are so excited for you to come dance with us! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at relevedanceumich@gmail.com.

"Social Change in Action: How to be a change agent in a world that feels out of control" (September 14, 2022 12:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97362 97362-21794445@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Wednesday, September 14, 2022 12:30pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: School of Social Work

The Social Justice Changemaker Lecture series, established by a generous gift from Neil and Annmarie Hawkins, focuses on important global social justice issues, including race and nationality, immigration and refugees, income inequality, gender identity and sexual orientation, education, health, and mental and physical abilities. The Lecture aims to bring prominent social justice experts and advocates from multiple disciplines, including social sciences, science, humanities, the arts, and the professions, to the University of Michigan Campus.

This year's lecture will focus on exploring ways to be a change agent during challenging times and how to use philanthropy as a force for social change. Darren Walker will talk about how he sees his position at the Ford Foundation and the role of philanthropy. He will discuss the idea of "trust-based" philanthropy and that being a leader is sometimes being a convener.

*This event will take place in person - A livestream option will be made available on the SSW homepage. Continuing education hours will only be offered for the in-person event.*

If you have any questions regarding this event, please contact Emma Krzyzaniak at ekrzyzan@umich.edu

The Breath of Every Living Thing: Zoocephali and the Limits of Alterity (September 16, 2022 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/97970 97970-21795408@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, September 16, 2022 3:00pm

Abstract: This paper focuses on the woefully understudied Hammelburg Mahzor (Darmstadt, HLH Cod. Or. 13), a Jewish festival book completed in Lower Franconia in the middle of the fourteenth century. The book’s most remarkable feature is perhaps the inclusion of carefully curated zoocephalic, or theriomorphic, figures: humans with beastly and bestial heads. By virtue of their alterity, the zoocephali call attention to themselves with emphatic force. The purpose of this talk is to explore the semiotics and phenomenology of this alterity, and to suggest that its presence lies at the intersection of language, philosophy, poetry, and history. In the Hammelburg Mahzor this visual idiom also signals distinction, albeit in a way that, conspicuously, collapses temporalities, tests the limits of alterity, and makes an argument about likeness and difference. By foregrounding linguistic elisions between words, images, and the celebrants, such an idiom establishes visceral connections with the community of the book’s users. Ultimately, theriomorphs stand as a fitting metaphor for medieval Jewish art as it has been viewed in mainstream scholarship.

Bio: Elina Gertsman, Professor of Medieval Art at Case Western Reserve University (where she is Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan Professor in Catholic Studies II), has authored an extensive series of field-changing, prize-winning publications. Her many books include The Dance of Death in the Middle Ages: Image, Text, Performance (2010), Worlds Within: Opening the Medieval Shrine Madonna (2015), and most recently The Absent Image: Lacunae in Medieval Books (2021), winner of the 2022 Charles Rufus Morey Prize. Her work has been supported by the Guggenheim, Kress, Mellon, and Franco-American Cultural Exchange Foundations as well as by the American Council for Learned Societies. In 2022 she was elected a Fellow of the Medieval Academy of America.

Data science is advancing scientific discovery in multiple ways, from protein folding to galaxy formation. Furthermore, it evidences the social mechanisms within scientific institutions more apt for innovation. To what extent, then, can data science elicit a radical restructuring of scientific practice? Can we harness its full potential?

In this colloquium we will explore the promises data science has for scientific inquiry while also taking a critical view on the processes of science-making and data extraction, analysis and implementation. Join us to engage with the data science of science and the science of data science through workshops and an afternoon of talks by guest speakers.

Race and Racism, Comparatively: A Fall 2022 Series (October 4, 2022 4:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/96941 96941-21793601@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, October 4, 2022 4:00pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Comparative Literature

“Race and Racism, Comparatively” is a series of three conversations highlighting the work of scholars both in and beyond U-M whose scholarship is contributing to much-needed conversations on the global dimension of race, racism, and their impacts. Through these events, we seek to help broaden the aperture through which the academic community considers these themes, encouraging an understanding of a dynamic and interconnected set of systems, practices and material effects.

September 20th 2022 @ 4:00 PM: Virtual conversation with University of Pennsylvania scholar and president of the Middle East Studies Association, Eve Troutt Powell and Tennessee State University scholar, Keisha Brown. A cultural historian, Professor Troutt Powell’s scholarship has focused the history of the modern Middle East with a particular emphasis on slavery in the Nile Valley and in the former Ottoman Empire. Professor Brown’s work has focused on modern China and the negotiation of Sino-Blackness; her research interests broadly include ethnic and race studies, postcolonial theory and social and cultural history in East Asia.

October 4th 2022 @ 4:00 PM: Roundtable featuring U-M faculty whose scholarship takes up the question of race and racism according to a transnational lens. The areas of focus represented among the participants include: the construction of blackness in the Francophone world; race, gender and Islam; the role of race and racialization as a tool of biopower in Mexico; and race and representation in US classrooms, literature and media. This event will be in-person at Kuenzel Room in the Michigan League, with a hybrid stream option.

November 1st 2022 @ 4:00 PM: Pedagogy Workshop. The groups will function as both an opportunity to reflect on the provocations raised during previous two events, dissect our assumptions about race on the global stage, and exchange ideas and best practices for teaching the same. The aim is to create a constructive and productive dialogue which will ideally produce a series of “best practices'' for teaching race and racism from a comparative, global standpoint. This event will be in-person at the Vandenberg Room in the League, with a hybrid stream option on Zoom. Register for streaming here:

Abstract:
Anishinaabe (Odawa, Bodewadmi, and Ojibwe) legal and political philosophy is buried under the infrastructure of modern self-determination law and policy. Modern Anishinaabe tribes are rough copies of American governments. The Anishinaabeg (people) usually choose their ogemaag (leaders) through an at-large election process that infects tribal politics with individualized self-interest. Those elected leaders, what I call ogemaakaan (artificial leaders) preside over modern governments that encourage hierarchy, political opportunism, and tyranny of the majority. While modern tribal governments are extraordinary successes compared to the era of total federal control, a significant number of tribes face intractable political disputes that can traced to the philosophical disconnect from culture and tradition.

Anishinaabe philosophy prioritizes ogemaag who are deferential and serve as leaders only for limited purposes and times. Ogemaag are true representatives who act only when and how instructed to do so by their constituents. Their decisions are rooted in cultural and traditional philosophies, including for example Mino-Bimaadiziwin (the act of living a good life), Inawendewin (relational accountability), Niizhwaaswii Mishomis/Nokomis Kinoomaagewinawaan (the Seven Gifts the Grandfathers or Grandmothers), and the Dodemaag (clans). I offer suggestions on how modern tribal government structures can be lightly modified to restore much of this philosophy.

CAS Workshop | Modern State and "Internal" Colonialism (November 4, 2022 9:30am) https://events.umich.edu/event/100764 100764-21800328@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 4, 2022 9:30am
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Center for Armenian Studies

In parallel to the process of external colonization around the world, modern state makers simultaneously conquered and colonized people and places within their territorial boundaries by rendering them legible through knowledge production and manageable through force, coercion, intimidation, and, at times, reward. Mountains, deserts, and valleys that have sustained ecosystems of livelihood beyond the control of, and often despite, central administrations became the last bastions of coexistence challenging the expansion of modern state. Scholars such as Harold Wolpe, Rivera Cusicanqui, Robert Blauner, Michael Hechter, James Scott, and Uğur Ümit Üngör have applied the theory of internal colonialism to state-making processes in places as far and wide as, respectively, South Africa, Latin America, North/Black America, England, Southeast Asia, and Turkey. Seemingly provincial yet global in scale, such a wide-ranging applicability shows that internal colonialism has been as widespread and crucial as external colonization—i.e., colonialism *par excellence*—in the making of the modern world.

This workshop brings together scholars whose works challenge disciplinary boundaries and existing periodizations and who engage creatively with underrepresented themes and groups in different parts of the world. The main objective is to explore different approaches to intercommunal relations and environmental circumstances *before, during*, and *after *the absorption of nonstate people and places into a centrally administered modern state. By employing approaches outside state-society, center-periphery, and sovereign-subject dichotomies in conversation with one another, we hope to qualify the metanarratives of collective communal violence that treat ethnic and religious communities as hostile and monolithic entities. The workshop hopes to shed light on the role of the modern state in transforming intercommunal relations and in shaping collective memories.

To these ends, the first panel discusses narratives of cohabitation and state evasion in the imperial and post-imperial settings. The second panel discusses the transformation of ecosystems of coexistence outside direct state control and the ways in which such pasts are remembered. The roundtable brings together both sets of panelists to discuss internal colonialism as a conceptual framework in exploring the processes of modern state-making and its role in transforming people and places, both in history and memory.

In 2021, with the withdrawal of U.S. and allied forces, the Afghanistan capital Kabul fell. Anger and confusion reigns across America mixed with relief that the twenty-year war is over. Iraq, a fragile democracy remains but the rationale for invasion remains in question. Almost fifty years before, Saigon fell after the last American forces pulled out of Vietnam. How do Afghanistan and Iraq Veterans feel about their sacrifice and service today compared to how Vietnam Vets now feel about theirs? What, in fact, does winning a modern war look like? This panel will be one of the first in the nation to ask this urgently important question.

Author Douglas Stanton will review the heroic actions taken by the 5th Special Forces Group Operational Detachment Alpha 595 to liberate a region in Afghanistan from the Taliban without tanks or trucks, but by only using horses. This book became the inspiration for the major motion picture “12 Strong” by Jerry Bruckheimer, starring Chris Hemsworth and Michael Shannon.

Mr. Stanton will provide the historical context of the book and inform the audience of leadership techniques used by these Special Forces that can be applied to your everyday decision-making to improve performance.

Engaging heartland residents: Rebuilding pride, ownership, and a brighter future (November 11, 2022 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/99426 99426-21798730@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Friday, November 11, 2022 9:00am
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Weiser Diplomacy Center

Leaders from North America and Europe will explore approaches to industrial heartland economic renewal in order to address one of the root causes of the polarizing politics undermining Western democracies and the transatlantic alliance.

Industrial regions—historically their countries’ economic powerhouses during the 20th century and the foundation for the middle class on both sides of the Atlantic—have undergone significant economic restructuring over the past several decades, leading to fractured communities and the rise of populist politics. This event will be a working discussion with leaders, managers and experts on community and economic development from North America, the UK and Europe, exchanging insights and ideas around advancing place-focused economic development policies and approaches. The event is one of a number of transatlantic learning exchanges being conducted as part of the Transforming Industrial Heartlands Initiative—a partnership of governments and leading policy organizations in North America and Europe.

Attendees may join in person or via zoom.

*Speakers*

Understanding Demonization

In the age of individual responsibility, those at the bottom of the income hierarchy are routinely shamed. Out-of-work benefits claimants are subject to particularly severe forms of vilification, their unemployment being portrayed as resulting from personal failings. When these shortcomings are constructed as moral failings, we enter the space of what I call “demonization”. Demonization is the portrayal of individuals as wicked threats to the community and as worthy of deep moral contempt for their alleged behavior. Benefits recipients are demonized when they undergo sustained attacks on their moral character, when they are viewed as deliberately choosing idleness over hard work. The trope of the lazy free rider living at taxpayers’ expense is remarkably uniform across advanced economies and has been an effective strategy to undermine support for welfare. Because demonization diminishes its target’s moral standing, it pauses a critical threat to our ability to stand as equals, which contemporary theorists allege to be an essential component of a just and democratic society. Starting from the example of benefits recipients, my paper identifies several morally significant steps in the workings of demonization, clarifies its social function, and characterizes precisely what makes it wrong

We'd like to invite you to a new event series this semester, the Queer World Conversations! These will be weekly discussions on a variety of topics, but all of them will be discussed with a queer lens. We'll bring the topic, you bring the discussion! Everyone is welcome to join the Conversations, and the voices of those most impacted by the week's topic will be prioritized.

Topics will be announced the week before on our social medias and on the event pages. Registration is not required, nor is consistent attendance. Come when you want, bring your friends, and let's have a Conversation!

Upcoming topics:
4/12/23 - Weight Inclusivity

There are a lot of social ideas of what someone's body "should" look like, especially when it comes to weight. Body positivity is more visible than ever, but so is fatphobia. With the help of our friends of the School of Public Health's Weight Inclusive Initiative, we'll dive into the ways that queer bodies and queer cultures interact with and complicate the already complex ideas we have around one's weight. Are queer people held to a higher standard than non-queer folks? Do we hold each other to higher standards within our own community? Are there any major connections between fatphobia and gender dysphoria?

Spectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:
The Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event, there is space to report that in the registration, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Sometimes, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster, or cooking with your dad, who grew up poor, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity.

The Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live, work, play, love, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces, the artists tell stories about the customs, communities, relationships, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us, our communities, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in.

Join the Student Life Sustainabilty Cultural Organizers and the Center for Campus Involvement for an art exhibition on the first floor of the Union from Feb 13-Feb 24.

Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Student Life Sustainability

"A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage in an empire reminiscent of imperial China. Her brothers are dead, her armies and their war mammoths long defeated and caged behind their borders. Alone and sometimes reviled, she must choose her allies carefully.

Rabbit, a handmaiden, sold by her parents to the palace for the lack of five baskets of dye, befriends the emperor's lonely new wife and gets more than she bargained for.

At once feminist high fantasy and an indictment of monarchy, this evocative debut follows the rise of the empress In-yo, who has few resources and fewer friends. She's a northern daughter in a mage-made summer exile, but she will bend history to her will and bring down her enemies, piece by piece."

Democratically Engaged Assessment, Part One: Reimagining Assessment for Public Scholarship (March 13, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/104686 104686-21809860@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 13, 2023 10:00am
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Rackham Graduate School

Assessment. The word sends shivers up the spine of even the most experienced scholars. Assessment is one of the most challenging, fraught, and effective endeavors that we deal with as public scholars, community engagement professionals, and change agents. But does assessment have to be so stressful? So inauthentic? Devoid of values? The quick answer: no!
Assessment can be so much more than ticking boxes, taking surveys, and statistics. It can be dynamic, engaging, authentic, and reaffirming. In this workshop, we will help participants reimagine their relationship with assessment and develop ways of centering an equity-based, inclusive, democratic assessment process in their work. These workshops will guide participants through a series of activities to reimagine their assessment work using the framework of democratically-engaged assessment (DEA) as a lens. Following a conceptual introduction and initial engagement with the framework, participants will examine their assessment practices and develop an action plan for their own work in a specific arena. Reflective exercises and collaborative activities will help participants surface their assumptions about the role of values in assessment, the values they enact through their assessment, tension points that arise across phases of assessment, and opportunities to negotiate tensions through the lens of DEA. In keeping with the tenets of the framework, participants will not only enhance their own work, but also will contribute to the ongoing and co-creative development of the DEA framework itself.

Part 1: Reimagining Assessment for Public Scholarship
Intention: This workshop will cover the basics of assessment, bust some myths, introduce some framings and tools, and explore examples of the spectrum of assessment.

Democratically Engaged Assessment, Part Two: From Theory to Practice—Build a Plan and Make It Yours (March 14, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/104687 104687-21809861@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 14, 2023 10:00am

In this workshop, we will help participants to reimagine their relationship with assessment and develop ways of centering an equity-based, inclusive, democratic assessment process in their work.

Part One: Reimagining Assessment for Public Scholarship
NOTE: This session has a separate registration, please register for Part 1 here.
Intention: This workshop will cover the basics of assessment, bust some myths, introduce some framings and tools, and explore examples of the spectrum of assessment.

Part Two: From Theory to Practice – Build a plan and make it yours
Audience: This workshop is an ideal space for those who have a project, an idea, or an inkling of an idea that they want to develop into reality and plan how to assess it.

Participants may choose to attend one or both sessions, depending on their interests and needs.

She is a frequent public speaker and has appeared on CNN, BBC World, PBS, CSPAN, MSNBC, Fox News, Black News Channel, and Al Jazeera English. She is an editor of the Race and the Law Profs blog. She previously served on the board of the ACLU of Texas and as a nonresident fellow at the Brookings Institution – Doha. She currently serves on the board of directors of ReThink Media, the Project on Democracy in the Middle East (POMED), and Democracy in the Arab World Now (DAWN).

Prior to joining legal academia, Professor Aziz served as a senior policy advisor for the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where she worked on law and policy at the intersection of national security and civil liberties. Professor Aziz earned a JD and an MA in Middle East Studies from the University of Texas, where she served as an associate editor of the Texas Law Review. Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action is a new 6-hour workshop developed by the University of Michigan Spectrum Center. This workshop aims to deepen our UM community's understanding of, and ability to engage with, LGBTQIA2S+ allyship. In Towards Solidarity, we move beyond basic conceptualizations of allyship and challenge participants to center liberation as they show up actively for LGBTQ+ communities. Learning outcomes include:

Through their participation in this program, participants will:

- Develop their understanding of LGBTQIA2S+ allyship away from “ally” as an identity term and toward solidarity, a developmental, intersectional, and active set of practices;
- Increase self-awareness to more effectively be in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities;
- Gain knowledge about how LGBTQ+ oppression operates on multiple levels
- Identify inclusive practices, skills, and resources to support LGBTQ+ communities, particularly at U-M;
- Commit to the practice of allyship and showing up in solidarity in their personal and professional lives

In this public offering of our workshop, lunch will be provided. We expect that all participants to complete our 1-hour webcourse prior to joining Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action.
