We'd like to invite you to a new event series this semester, the Queer World Conversations! These will be weekly discussions on a variety of topics, but all of them will be discussed with a queer lens. We'll bring the topic, you bring the discussion! Everyone is welcome to join the Conversations, and the voices of those most impacted by the week's topic will be prioritized.

Topics will be announced the week before on our social medias and on the event pages. Registration is not required, nor is consistent attendance. Come when you want, bring your friends, and let's have a Conversation!

Upcoming topics:
4/12/23 - Weight Inclusivity

There are a lot of social ideas of what someone's body "should" look like, especially when it comes to weight. Body positivity is more visible than ever, but so is fatphobia. With the help of our friends of the School of Public Health's Weight Inclusive Initiative, we'll dive into the ways that queer bodies and queer cultures interact with and complicate the already complex ideas we have around one's weight. Are queer people held to a higher standard than non-queer folks? Do we hold each other to higher standards within our own community? Are there any major connections between fatphobia and gender dysphoria?

Spectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:
The Spectrum Center is dedicated to working towards offering equitable access to all of the events we organize. If you have an accessibility need you feel may not be automatically met at this event, there is space to report that in the registration, or you can fill out our Event Accessibility Form, found at http://bit.ly/SCaccess. You do not need to have a registered disability with the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD) or identify as disabled to submit. Advance notice is necessary for some accommodations to be fully implemented, and we will always attempt to dismantle barriers as they are brought up to us. Sometimes, the solutions to the climate crisis aren’t complex technological innovations. They can be as personal as your auntie’s renegade community kitchen that she built after a natural disaster, or cooking with your dad, who grew up poor, and taught you how to be resourceful in the kitchen. It can be choosing to share moments of laughter with your loved ones in a time of hardship, or sitting on the porch with your elders and learning from their stories of the past. Too often, climate conversations ignore these narratives of community resourcefulness and creativity in times of adversity.

The Future Is With Our People brings together work from 10+ UM students who live, work, play, love, and hope in the face of uncertainties and injustices. Through these pieces, the artists tell stories about the customs, communities, relationships, and experiences that bring them joy and a drive to demand a better future. As the climate crisis intensifies, we must recognize that solutions often lie within us, our communities, and our cultures. This art exhibit attempts to express just how vital our stories can be in building a sustainable and just future for present and future generations to thrive in.

Join the Student Life Sustainabilty Cultural Organizers and the Center for Campus Involvement for an art exhibition on the first floor of the Union from Feb 13-Feb 24.

Join the Spectrum Center Programming Board for brunch and a guided book club-style discussion of the 119-page novella *The Empress of Salt and Fortune* by Nghi Vo, snacks provided! A limited number of digital copies are available for claim via the registration link. Book summary:

"A young royal from the far north is sent south for a political marriage in an empire reminiscent of imperial China. Her brothers are dead, her armies and their war mammoths long defeated and caged behind their borders. Alone and sometimes reviled, she must choose her allies carefully.

Rabbit, a handmaiden, sold by her parents to the palace for the lack of five baskets of dye, befriends the emperor's lonely new wife and gets more than she bargained for.

At once feminist high fantasy and an indictment of monarchy, this evocative debut follows the rise of the empress In-yo, who has few resources and fewer friends. She's a northern daughter in a mage-made summer exile, but she will bend history to her will and bring down her enemies, piece by piece."

Democratically Engaged Assessment, Part One: Reimagining Assessment for Public Scholarship (March 13, 2023 10:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/104686 104686-21809860@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Monday, March 13, 2023 10:00am

Assessment. The word sends shivers up the spine of even the most experienced scholars. Assessment is one of the most challenging, fraught, and effective endeavors that we deal with as public scholars, community engagement professionals, and change agents. But does assessment have to be so stressful? So inauthentic? Devoid of values? The quick answer: no!
Assessment can be so much more than ticking boxes, taking surveys, and statistics. It can be dynamic, engaging, authentic, and reaffirming. In this workshop, we will help participants reimagine their relationship with assessment and develop ways of centering an equity-based, inclusive, democratic assessment process in their work. These workshops will guide participants through a series of activities to reimagine their assessment work using the framework of democratically-engaged assessment (DEA) as a lens. Following a conceptual introduction and initial engagement with the framework, participants will examine their assessment practices and develop an action plan for their own work in a specific arena. Reflective exercises and collaborative activities will help participants surface their assumptions about the role of values in assessment, the values they enact through their assessment, tension points that arise across phases of assessment, and opportunities to negotiate tensions through the lens of DEA. In keeping with the tenets of the framework, participants will not only enhance their own work, but also will contribute to the ongoing and co-creative development of the DEA framework itself.

Part 1: Reimagining Assessment for Public Scholarship
Intention: This workshop will cover the basics of assessment, bust some myths, introduce some framings and tools, and explore examples of the spectrum of assessment.

Julia Metzker serves as director of the Washington Center for Improving Undergraduate Education at the Evergreen State College. Julia received her first degree from the Evergreen State College, where she learned first-hand the value of a transformative liberal arts education. She obtained a doctoral degree in inorganic chemistry from the University of Arizona and completed a postdoctoral appointment at the University of York in the United Kingdom. In her 10 years as a chemistry professor at Georgia College, she discovered the power of community-based learning to engage students in learning that matters. After serving as the inaugural director of community-based engaged learning at Georgia College she moved to Stetson University as the founding executive director for the Brown Center for Faculty Innovation and Excellence. During her journey of discovering herself as an educator, she was fortunate to find a cohort of like-minded university educators who co-founded the Innovative Course-building Group—a grass-roots social network for learning that supports teaching faculty and staff across disciplines. She believes in reimagining and reclaiming the democratic potential of assessment, work she champions as a member of Imagining America’s Assessing the Practices of Public Scholarship (APPS) research group. She and her partner, Joe, raise chickens and bees in the Pacific Northwest.
Sarah Stanlick is an assistant professor in the Department of Integrative and Global Studies and the director of the Great Problems Seminar at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). She is also responsible for the delivery and support of global project-based learning through the Global Projects Program, and teaches social science research methods for students of all backgrounds and majors in preparation for the interactive qualifying project, a seven-week project with external sponsors. Her commitment to transformative and inclusive learning that engages students as active agents includes her regular participation in faculty learning communities at WPI and collaborative work to advance the integration of open educational resources and open pedagogical practices across the WPI curriculum. In addition to co-chairing the APPS collective with Julia, she serves as one of the co-directors of the Community-Based Global Learning Collaborative. Her priority for teaching, research, and service is to encourage and model engaged, active citizenship and help create conditions for all community members to be able to similarly engage. She splits time between Worcester and Hellertown, Pennsylvania (where her partner Michael works and lives with their spicy cat Miikka) and is an avid gardener, yoga practitioner, cook, and ice hockey fan.

This session is sponsored by Rackham’s Mellon Public Engagement and the Humanities program, and is open to all students on campus interested in the topic.

Understanding the true role of adversity enables us to embrace challenges as catalysts for change. Significant challenges in every context constantly emerge, and the wisdom needed to thrive in this dynamic environment is essential for our growth and development.

This workshop explores the resiliency theory framework, focusing on practical insights, knowledge, and next steps to build resilient habits as individuals, teams, and leaders. This workshop uses interactive online activities, small and large group discussions, and personal reflections to help participants understand individual, team, and leadership resiliency, and begin building resilient mindsets at each level.

The BLI, M-LEAD, Army ROTC, Air Force ROTC and Navy ROTC are excited to invite our students and emerging undergraduate leaders to join us on March 16th for this interactive workshop on resiliency.

This year’s distinguished lecture is an in-person and virtual event and is free to attend.

Professor Aziz is a professor of law, Chancellor’s Social Justice Scholar, and the founding director of the Center for Security, Race, and Rights at Rutgers University Law School. Her scholarship examines the intersection of national security, race, religion, and civil rights focusing on the adverse impact of national security laws and policies on racial, religious, and ethnic minorities. Her groundbreaking book, The Racial Muslim: When Racism Quashes Religious Freedom, examines how religious bigotry racializes immigrant Muslims through a historical and comparative approach.

Professor Aziz’s commentary has appeared in the New York Times, CNN.com, Carnegie Endowment’s Sada Journal, Middle East Institute, Foxnews.com, World Politics Review, Houston Chronicle, Austin Statesmen, The Guardian, and Christian Science Monitor. She is a frequent public speaker and has appeared on CNN, BBC World, PBS, CSPAN, MSNBC, Fox News, Black News Channel, and Al Jazeera English. She is an editor of the Race and the Law Profs blog. She previously served on the board of the ACLU of Texas and as a nonresident fellow at the Brookings Institution – Doha. She currently serves on the board of directors of ReThink Media, the Project on Democracy in the Middle East (POMED), and Democracy in the Arab World Now (DAWN).

Prior to joining legal academia, Professor Aziz served as a senior policy advisor for the Office for Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, where she worked on law and policy at the intersection of national security and civil liberties. Professor Aziz earned a JD and an MA in Middle East Studies from the University of Texas, where she served as an associate editor of the Texas Law Review. In addition, professor Aziz clerked for the Honorable Andre M. Davis on the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.

Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action is a new 6-hour workshop developed by the University of Michigan Spectrum Center. This workshop aims to deepen our UM community's understanding of, and ability to engage with, LGBTQIA2S+ allyship. In Towards Solidarity, we move beyond basic conceptualizations of allyship and challenge participants to center liberation as they show up actively for LGBTQ+ communities. Learning outcomes include:

Through their participation in this program, participants will:

- Develop their understanding of LGBTQIA2S+ allyship away from “ally” as an identity term and toward solidarity, a developmental, intersectional, and active set of practices;
- Increase self-awareness to more effectively be in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities;
- Gain knowledge about how LGBTQ+ oppression operates on multiple levels
- Identify inclusive practices, skills, and resources to support LGBTQ+ communities, particularly at U-M;
- Commit to the practice of allyship and showing up in solidarity in their personal and professional lives

In this public offering of our workshop, lunch will be provided. We expect that all participants to complete our 1-hour webcourse prior to joining Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action.

Vision 2034: Town Halls (March 28, 2023 2:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/106244 106244-21813970@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, March 28, 2023 2:00pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Vision 2034

The University of Michigan is engaging in a collective strategic visioning process to imagine our shared future for the next 10 years — our Vision 2034. The active participation of U-M students, faculty, staff, alumni and partners will be vital to the initiative’s success. Join us as we embark on this historic journey.

The collective visioning process for Vision 2034 will occur throughout 2023 alongside other important U-M efforts, including Campus Planning — which will explore how the physical campus must evolve to support the future of U-M. It will build upon the insights and lessons learned from other ongoing university engagement efforts including Bold Challenges, Bold Ideas, Culture Journey, as well as planning for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) 2.0. In addition, Vision 2034 will incorporate the strategic planning efforts occurring across the institution — including at UM–Dearborn, UM-Flint, and Michigan Medicine. It also will be informed by the 2023 U-M Audience Research Project findings, expected soon.

Our primary objectives are to:

• Engage the university community at large in crafting a compelling vision for our shared future, grounded in our mission and values. Learn how to get involved.

• Generate big ideas through town halls, surveys, focus groups and other forums.

• Incorporate key themes from recent campus-wide engagement efforts and other planning initiatives to inform the vision.

• Deliver a shared vision for charting the path of the university into the next 10 years.

• Enable university leadership to establish mechanisms to measure progress toward our vision over time.

The sessions available in this track offer multiple opportunities for feedback and idea contribution through a Town Hall format. A variety of audience groups & organizations will also participate through invite-only focus groups (not listed here).

Please note: Registration for events is currently limited to U-M faculty, staff, and students. If you do not see an event for your U-M affiliation, please check back at a later time. Additional engagement opportunities will be continuously added.

Vision 2034: Town Halls (April 6, 2023 3:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/106244 106244-21813971@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, April 6, 2023 3:00pm

The Inclusive History Project (IHP) is preparing to study and document the University of Michigan’s past and to engage members of the U-M community in order to better understand U-M’s successes and failures in creating a truly inclusive university. Since November, a Framing & Design Committee of faculty, staff, and students from the university’s three campuses has been working to design a multi-year plan for the project.

The contributions of individuals across our campuses and communities are vital to telling an inclusive history of the university, and there will be many ways to participate in this shared project. Currently, we are seeking your thoughts and ideas about the IHP in planning the work ahead of us.

We invite you to join us for an in-person or virtual forum to learn about the IHP and share your feedback. At these sessions, we will make a brief presentation on the purpose and scope of the project and our planning process and then gather your input through small group discussions.

NOTE: We're sorry, but the UM-Ann Arbor forum is now at capacity, and registration is closed. Share your thoughts and ideas through the feedback form in the links section of this page, or by contacting inclusivehistory@umich.edu.

Born in Detroit, Thomas J. Sugrue is Silver Professor of Social and Cultural Analysis and History and director of the Cities Collaborative at New York University. A specialist in twentieth-century American politics, urban history, civil rights, and race, he is the author of four books, among them The Origins of the Urban Crisis: Race and Inequality in Postwar Detroit (1996) and Sweet Land of Liberty: The Forgotten Struggle for Civil Rights in the North (2008). He is a frequent media commentator on modern American history, politics, civil rights, and urban policy.

Vision 2034: All-Staff Town Halls (May 25, 2023 9:00am) https://events.umich.edu/event/107789 107789-21816583@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, May 25, 2023 9:00am

While the sessions in this track are intended for staff members, all members of the U-M community are welcome.

The sessions available in this track offer multiple opportunities for feedback and idea contribution through an interactive discussion format.

Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action is a 6-hour workshop developed by the University of Michigan Spectrum Center.

Develop their understanding of LGBTQIA2S+ allyship away from “ally” as an identity term and toward solidarity, a developmental, intersectional, and active set of practices;
Increase self-awareness to more effectively be in solidarity with LGBTQ+ communities;
Gain knowledge about how LGBTQ+ oppression operates on multiple levels
Identify inclusive practices, skills, and resources to support LGBTQ+ communities, particularly at U-M;
Commit to the practice of allyship and showing up in solidarity in their personal and professional lives

In this public offering of our workshop, lunch will be provided. We expect that all participants to complete our 1-hour webcourse prior to joining Towards Solidarity: Allyship in Action.

NSF Priorities and Opportunities for Data Science and AI Seminar with Dr. Pamela Davis-Kean (September 12, 2023 2:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110471 110471-21824959@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Tuesday, September 12, 2023 2:30pm
Location: Michigan Union
Organized By: Michigan Institute for Data Science

As data science and AI have continued to permeate society, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has introduced new programs in the foundations of the data sciences and its applications to scientific problems. This talk will provide an overview of some of NSF’s activities and opportunities in data science and related fields, with a particular focus on the Social, Behavioral, and Economic (SBE) Directorate.

Following the presentation there will be light refreshments provided and time for networking with the speaker and fellow attendees.
Please note that this is an in-person event; live-streaming is not available.

About: Dr. Pamela Davis-Kean is the Developmental Area Chair and Professor in the University of Michigan Department of Psychology as well as a Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research where she is the Founding Director of the Population, Neurodevelopment, and Genetics (PNG) program. Dr. Davis-Kean was an Associate Director of the Michigan Institute for Data Science, and recently served as the Program Director in the Developmental Science Program of the Social, Behavioral, and Economic (SBE) Directorate of the National Science Foundation.

Dr. Davis-Kean’s research focuses on the various pathways that the socio-economic status (SES) of parents relates to the cognitive/achievement outcomes (particularly mathematics) of their children. Her primary focus is on parental educational attainment and how it can influence the development of the home environment throughout childhood, adolescence, and the transition to adulthood. Davis-Kean is also a Research Professor at the Institute for Social Research where she is the Founding Director of the Population, Neurodevelopment, and Genetics (PNG) program. This collaboration examines the complex transactions of the brain, biology, and behavior as children and families develop across time and is representative of the population. She has expertise in quantitative methods, data science, the use of secondary data for longitudinal analyses, and open science practices. Her current research is converging methods in social science and computer science to examine the flow of parenting information on social media platforms.
