In Jason Reese C’s work *Father Who Art In Heaven*, we fall into a surreal landscape that cradles five characters through an unearthly journey. The space feels like a barren home, a cathedral and a morgue all in one. There is a great distance between the bodies, what they do, what they say, how they interact. We watch as the underbelly of these relationships unfold through their inevitable decay.

This event is open to the public; free tickets are available at the door starting one hour before the performance.

"Hourglass Showers," a senior dance performance (November 16, 2023 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/113800 113800-21831705@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, November 16, 2023 8:00pm
Location: Dance Building
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

The University of Michigan Department of Dance presents *Hourglass Showers*, containing the works of senior BFA dance majors Anabelle Chalmers, Katherine Kiessling, Lauren Roebuck, and Mia Rubenstein.

Anabelle Chalmers’ choreography touches on themes of disaster, exploring the collapse of humanity and its effects on social and interpersonal relationships within the group. In Chalmers' solo, music and imagery are the driving forces of the piece, alongside the use of storytelling and vulnerability experienced throughout her movement.

Katherine Kiessling’s group work considers the various possibilities of who we become as individuals, focusing on how we seek escapes within the mundane. Meanwhile, Kiessling’s solo focuses primarily on the catch and release of moving between the floor and standing, exploring all possibilities of entrances and exits.

Lauren Roebuck’s, *She Cooks as Good as She Looks*, is loosely based on the film *The Stepford Wives*. It is a character-driven dance that critiques the traditional roles of a relationship between a man and a woman in the 21st century. Roebuck’s solo, *Goldenheart*, is an ode to her childhood, evoking feelings of nostalgia, innocence, and happiness.

Mia Rubenstein’s, *I Love You Like the Sun*, centers around the complexity of human nature, revealing how humans can be both beautiful and ugly all at once. Rubenstein’s solo, *Vigilance*, deals with themes of self-doubt and the unknown that evidently leave ideas of certainty within the chaos.

Performances of this concert will be Thursday, November 16, through Saturday, November 18, 2023. Each show will begin at 8:00 p.m. (Livestreaming on November 17.) Tickets are free and are available at the door an hour prior to the performance.

*The Nutcracker(ish)* is a BIPOC-centered modern reimagining of *The Nutcracker and the Mouse King* with elements of *The Wizard of Oz*. When young Clara, an aspiring ballerina, takes the train to get her first pair of pointe shoes, she is whisked away by a snowstorm to a magical Oz-like place. There she befriends the Nutcracker and the Snowwoman, encounters the infamous Mouse King, and and journeys to meet the Great and Powerful Sorceress to get her greatest wish granted.

Audiences of all ages will enjoy this magical journey filled with ballet, modern, hip-hop, and jazz with selections from the Tchaikovsky score and Duke Ellington suite!

The show was co-created by father-daughter duo Tim Rhoze and Kara Roseborough and originally premiered in 2018 at Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre in Evanston, Illinois. As an extension of Fleetwood-Jourdain Theatre's mission, this dance theatre work started as a community engagement and equity-based project. The revamped University of Michigan production features an expanded cast and additional dance pieces, including a selection created through the production's partnership with the U-M Chapter of Ballet & Books. After a semester of curation and making, this event features works by Kiana Cook, Scott Crandall, Leah Crosby, Ginny Jiang, and Timothy Tsang, students who were enrolled in Dance 532 (Grad Performance) with Professor Charli Brissey in the winter 2024 term. *Good. Steady. Still.* is a diverse 60-minute show with original lighting design by Mary Cole.

Free tickets are available at the door starting one hour before the performance. Doors open at 7:30 and the show starts promptly at 8pm with no intermission. This performance is made possible through generous support from University of Michigan-Ann Arbor’s School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Kiana “KC” Cook will present a work on her identity development as a mixed-race child turned woman entitled, *Steady Searchin’ for My Halo*. Scott Crandall’s *Cousin Lizzie’s First Birthday* is an experiment in how to lengthen and shrink the distance between performer and audience, and between the audience members from each other. Leah Crosby’s *Tenderizing* uses junk shop technology to tell stories about learning how to be taken care of. It is an illustrated podcast, it is a puppet show… It is basically a really emo powerpoint presentation. Ginny Jiang’s piece is filled with seemingly ridiculous, abnormal, unsafe, wary, probing actions which hint at the character of a person's body and movements. Inspired by acts of self-navigation and resistance, Ginny delves into the wilderness of thought and the meaning of wild, free-growing vitality through the power of vision and figuration. Timothy Tsang is debuting a solo as a tribute to the memory of Brian Anthony Moczygemba.

In a world that often obscures vulnerability with an illusion of fearlessness, this project seeks to challenge stereotypes and redefine strength and weakness through the transformative power of dance.

*Touch a Breath - The Body Tells* is a creative work that delves into the concept of portraying human vulnerabilities as strength, aiming to counter the narrative that falsely argues that females as more susceptible and fragile. The body has been influenced by a lot of circumstances; it is time to consider these difficult times as an opportunity for growth.

Drawing on the research of a Vietnamese philosopher Thich Nhat Hahn, the project seeks to bring participants into valuing the present moment, fostering healing, transformation, and a hope for positivity amidst difficult times. *Touch a Breath - The Body Tells* has a lasting impact on the mental well-being of participants, fostering a deeper understanding of self and spirituality through bodies in time and space.

The University of Michigan School of Music Theater & Dance and the Department of Dance present *Tidal Sirens*, a Bachelor of Fine Arts dance concert featuring choreography and performances by graduating seniors Joelie Havey, Kali Hightower, Alana Packo, and Caitlyn Wade.

Free tickets are available at the door starting one hour before the performance.

Joelie Havey abstractly shares the story of her grandparents’ current mental and physical challenges and the impact these two important individuals had on her teen years and early twenties through her choreography.

Kali Hightower’s piece *Terms and Conditions* unravels the masked layers of media influence, examining how society's view is shaped and often distorted by the screen. The piece seeks to challenge the audience to question the authenticity of their perceptions and the information they consume daily. Her solo, *Bluffs* serves as a profound reflection of her life's journey, encapsulating the valuable lessons she has garnered at every significant milestone.

Caitlyn Wade’s *Rage Rage*, is a dance depicting a hypothetical desolate, isolated planet which houses recently deceased mythological humans. Which of these beings are then guided to their permanent residence among the stars? And which of these beings will remain on the planet, not worthy of an honor in the sky? The answer is yet to come. Wade’s solo, included within her group work, follows the same theme, and focuses on a lesser-known Greek mythological character – Boreas, who, after death, became a lost asteroid that probes and orbits the lonesome outskirts of the universe, reflecting the complexity of the emotions surrounding ideas of isolation, abandonment, and self-worth.

Cristina Benn’s piece *Gratitude* follows a journey in self acceptance, thanking all those before who have guided her to where she is today. *Thyself*, continues the journey of self-acceptance, celebrating the beauty of accepting oneself and embracing all of who you are. The piece is lively and fierce, incorporating elements of Afro-Caribbean styles with hip hop and femme dance.

Reina Kitasato’s *I Offer Prosperity and Eternal Life*, focuses on the concept of the self in relation to others through the lens of nature. The different stages of life and the evolution of one’s self is shown in the dance. Kitasato’s solo, *Unseen*, explores her multicultural background and the difficulties posed by having to navigate two communities while maintaining a sense of self. This is conveyed through a unique storyline and detailed movements.

Annabella Vidrio’s *Reasons I Now Understand* explores themes of cross-cultural communication, systems of love, and acceptance of the unknown. This piece, comprising both her solo and her group choreography, is largely inspired by her upbringing in a vibrant Mexican-American household and throughout the dance, Vidrio incorporates modern techniques and traditional Mexican folkloric dancing. The work is supported in part through the School of Music, Theatre & Dance’s EXCEL Enterprise Fund and the Arts Initiative's Student Mini Grant.

Dance/Wellness faculty member Amy West’s personal statement: Why ALS Center of Excellence?

"My 43-year-old niece, Breanna, is a former dancer who was diagnosed with ALS in October of 2023. As she surrenders to this disease, losing her ability to walk and speak, she has developed a keen awareness of how precious life is as she spends the time she has remaining with family, friends, and especially her three children. Reaching out to the ALS Center of Excellence, and having the evening’s performance *Women Defining Themselves* be a fundraiser for ALS, is my way of honoring my niece as well as those individuals who live with terminal illnesses."
