LuFuki is currently working on several projects including, XRoads, a traveling exhibit on the history of Black Muslims in Jazz, and Autophysiopsychic Millennium, a creative research-music collective to explore and experiment with the philosophy and music methodology of the great Dr. Yusef Lateef, which was featured at Carnegie Hall. LuFuki holds a Masters degree from Wayne State University in Near Eastern Studies, specializing in the Arabic Language, with a concentration in the literary genre of Tasliyah, praise poetry of the Prophet Muhammad, and a Bachelors degree from the University of Michigan in Africana Studies and History.

Adam Zanolini (co-founder) is a multi-instrumentalist, ethnomusicologist, writer, and arts organizer based in Chicago. He is the Executive Director of Elastic Arts Foundation in Chicago and former Associate Director of Arts for Art, presenter of the annual Vision Festival of avant-jazz in New York City. He received his PhD in music with a certificate in Africana Studies from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York in 2016. Adam’s highest ambition is to be a community musician: to cultivate and share knowledge through music in order to help heal, strengthen, and empower the Black community.

Mike Monford got an early start on his love for music digging through his father's jazz and R&B albums, DJing at parties through his teen years, then picking up the saxophone as his instrument of choice. Taking private lessons and being mentored by jazz legend Teddy Harris Jr., Mike took in the scene and began performing at some of Detroit's best known jazz clubs. In 1997, Mike was awarded a musical scholarship to the University of Hartford - Hart School of Music. While studying on the east coast under the great saxophonist Jackie McClean, Mike traveled to New York and performed and recorded with jazz greats including - but not limited to - Bill Lee, Marc Cary, and Hakim Jami. Mike spent some 20 years in New York honing his talents, and entrenched in the history and sounds of jazz. Armed with his experience as a performer, composer, and arranger, "Perseverance", Mike Monford's debut CD as a band leader was released in 2012. His sophomore album "The Cloth I'm Cut From" is being released June, 2023.

When Greg Robinson took over the leadership of the James Webb Space Telescope, it was years behind schedule, billions over budget, tarnished by engineering failures and waning stakeholder confidence. The trouble didn’t end there. COVID, hurricanes, and other obstacles soon stood in the way of success. Still, Robinson managed to bring together 20,000 people in 29 countries and 14 U.S. states to not only turn the program around, but nearly double its efficiency. In this inspiring talk, highlighted by breathtaking images from Webb, Robinson shares how trust, communication and effective leadership can bring teams together from across the globe to overcome obstacles and achieve your organization’s moonshot.

BIO

Best-known as the turnaround leader of the James Webb Space Telescope (Webb), 33-year NASA veteran Gregory Robinson is credited with transforming a program that was billions over budget and years behind schedule into one of NASA’s greatest achievements of the 21st century. Robinson’s renowned leadership skills and soft-spoken management and communication style have earned him numerous awards and honors, including being named one of TIME Magazine’s 100 Most Influential People of 2022 (alongside Apple CEO Tim Cook and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky) and receiving the TIME100 Impact Award, which credited Robinson’s leadership on Webb as bringing us closer to understanding the universe.

DESIGNING A DREAM: THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE “BLUE DREAM” HOUSE BY DS+R (September 21, 2023 6:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/111190 111190-21826181@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, September 21, 2023 6:00pm
Location: Walgreen Drama Center
Organized By: A. Alfred Taubman College of Architecture + Urban Planning

As the brainchild of collectors Julie Reyes Taubman and Robert Taubman, Blue Dream is an extraordinary house designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) that sought to renew the legacy of modernist architecture and art in the Hamptons. In advance of the launch of the eponymous book published by DelMonico Books, architecture critic Paul Goldberger will discuss the complex design process behind Blue Dream with DS+R partner Charles Renfro and Associate Principal Holly Deichmann. The panel discussion will offer insights into how Blue Dream reinterprets organic architecture for the 21st century, and stands as a striking addition to the roster of architecturally ambitious modernist houses on Long Island.

Paul Goldberger is a Contributing Editor at Vanity Fair. From 1997 through 2011, he served as the Architecture Critic for The New Yorker, where he wrote the magazine’s celebrated “Sky Line” column. He is the author of numerous books, including BALLPARK: Baseball in the American City, Building Art: The Life and Work of Frank Gehry, Building with History, Why Architecture Matters, Building Up and Tearing Down, Christo and Jeanne-Claude, and DUMBO: The Making of a Neighborhood and the Rebirth of Brooklyn. He also holds the Joseph Urban Chair in Design and Architecture at The New School in New York City and was formerly Dean of the Parsons School of Design at The New School.

He began his career at The New York Times, where in 1984 his architecture criticism was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Distinguished Criticism. In 2012 he received the Vincent Scully Prize from the National Building Museum in recognition of the influence his writing has had on the public’s understanding of architecture. In 2017, he received the Award in Architecture of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, which called him “the doyen of American architectural critics.”

Charles Renfro joined Diller Scofidio + Renfro (DS+R) in 1997 and became a Partner in 2004. He was the Partner-in-Charge of Blue Dream, leading the complex design process. Esther, a gifted Black seamstress in 1905 New York City, lives in a boarding house for women, where she makes a good living sewing intimate apparel (and keeping intimate secrets) for her clients. As she saves for the kind of future with a husband and family that she can’t have with the Hasidic shopkeeper who has captured her heart, she begins a deeply personal correspondence with a mysterious suitor laboring on the Panama Canal.

Steeped in evocative historical detail, *Intimate Apparel* delves into the inner lives of characters in search of connection.

Playing Traditional Korean Sanjo on the Violin (September 30, 2023 5:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/110003 110003-21823570@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Saturday, September 30, 2023 5:00pm
Location: Walgreen Drama Center

*Sanjo* is a genre of Korean traditional folk art music for a solo melodic instrument such as the zither *kayagŭm* or flute *taegŭm*, accompanied by an hourglass-shaped drum called *changgu*. Sanjo consists of several movements of increasing speed built on the unique Korean rhythmic patterns called *changdan*. The solo instrument plays dramatic and expressive melodic phrases that draw from the inflections of spoken Korean that are also characteristic of *p’ansori* singing.

ARTIST BIO

Although a native of Korea, violinist SOH-HYUN PARK ALTINO crossed paths with traditional Korean music only in 2019 while investigating distinctive musical elements in *Sanjo for Violin and Piano* (1955) by La Un-Yung (1922-1993), her maternal grandfather. Since then, supported by various research grants, she has pursued a new line of study of interpreting traditional ajaeng sanjo on the Western violin. In addition to studying extensively with traditional musicians in Korea, she has trained on the Kim Ilgu school of ajaeng sanjo with the composer-performer Kim Ilgu, Holder of National Important Intangible Cultural Property. This lecture and world premiere are made possible by the 2023 Korean Studies Grant of the Academy of Korean Studies and the Faculty Global Research Award of the Wheaton College.

Soh-Hyun came to the U.S. at age sixteen in pursuit of better musical educational opportunities and earned her bachelor’s, master’s, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degrees in violin performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the tutelage of Donald Weilerstein. Highly regarded as a gifted teacher and a versatile performer of solo and chamber music, Soh-Hyun taught at the University of Memphis and the University of Wisconsin-Madison prior to her current appointment as Associate Professor of Music at Wheaton College in Illinois.

Renowned multi-instrumentalist and conductor Kenneth Slowik will present a lecture about European and American bass instruments, including cellos, violas da gamba, and double basses. Ranging from three to six strings, examples of several instruments from the Stearns Collection will be available for examination at the lecture.

This program was made possible by a grant from the Arts Initiative at the University of Michigan.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Artistic Director of the Smithsonian Chamber Music Society, KENNETH SLOWIK first established his international reputation primarily as a cellist and viola da gamba player through his work with the Smithsonian Chamber Players, Castle Trio, Smithson String Quartet, Axelrod Quartet, and with Anner Bylsma’s L’Archibudelli. Conductor of the Smithsonian Chamber Orchestra since 1988, he became conductor of the Santa Fe Bach Festival in 1998, and led the Santa Fe Pro Musica Chamber Orchestra from 1999-2004. He is now devoting increasing amounts of time to conducting orchestral, oratorio, and operatic repertoire with modern- and period-instrument ensembles on both sides of the Atlantic.

Slowik has been a featured instrumental soloist and/or conductor with numerous orchestras, among them the National Symphony, the Baltimore Symphony, l’Orchestre Symphonique de Québec, the Vancouver Symphony, and the Cleveland Orchestra. A frequent guest artist with prominent chamber groups as well as with most of the leading U.S. early music ensembles, he enjoys providing the organ or harpsichord continuo for performances of large-scale baroque works at various festivals in the United States and abroad, and appears in recital both as harpsichord soloist and fortepiano collaborator for duo sonatas and Lieder.

Slowik’s impressive discography comprises over sixty recordings featuring him as conductor, cellist, gambist, barytonist and keyboard player for music ranging from the Baroque (Marais, Corelli, Bach) through the Classical (Haydn, Boccherini, Beethoven, Schubert) and Romantic (Mendelssohn, Gade, Spohr) to the early twentieth century (Schöenberg, Mahler, Richard Strauss). Of these, many have won prestigious international awards, including France’s Diapason d’Or and Choc, the “British Music Retailers’ Award for Excellence,” Italy’s Premio Internazionale del Disco Antonio Vivaldi, two GRAMMY® nominations, and numerous “Record of the Month” and “Record of the Year” prizes.

As an educator, Dr. Slowik has presented lectures at colleges and universities throughout the United States and has contributed to a number of symposia and colloquia at museums throughout the United States and Europe. He received the Smithsonian Secretary’s Distinguished Research Lecture Award in 2011. He serves on the faculty of L’Académie Internationale du Domaine Forget in Québec, and was named Artistic Director of the Baroque Performance Institute at the Oberlin College Conservatory in 1993.

Sam Schillace has been all over the tech world map and has quite the journey to share at EHour this Friday 10/6. He's been a serial entrepreneur, jumping into all sorts of cool projects, from video games to creating early web page software, word processors, and even application engines. And the best part? He's done it all. He's given us some cool consumer stuff like Box, and he's also delved into the enterprise world.

Remember when Google Docs was a revolutionary idea? Yep, Sam started it. Nowadays, he's all about consumer product culture and next-gen productivity. He's the kind of guy who's always pushing boundaries and asking those "What if?" questions in the ever-changing tech world.

Currently, Sam is a deputy CTO at Microsoft. Here, he's involved in a range of projects, from shaping product culture to infrastructure and AI incubation. He's truly a jack-of-all-trades in the tech world. Seriously, he's like a tech wizard.

And let's not forget his college days. Sam's a true-blue Wolverine, graduating from the University of Michigan specializing in combinatorics, and earned his BS honors in math in just 3.5 years. Oh, and he didn't stop there - he powered through and got his MS in a quick 3 semesters.

You've got a great opportunity to soak up some wisdom from this tech guru. Come hear Sam Schillace share his insight Friday October 6, 11:30am Stamps Auditorium. You don’t want to miss it!

“This American classic explores alternatives that might spring from the demented terrain of the California landscape. Sons of a desert-dwelling alcoholic and a suburban wanderer clash over a film script. Austin, the achiever, is working on a script he has sold to producer Saul Kimmer when Lee, a demented petty thief, drops in. He pitches his own idea for a movie to Kimmer, who then wants Austin to junk his bleak, modern love story and write Lee's trashy Western tale.” - Concord Theatricals

Undergraduate student Mirit Skeen directs this senior thesis show, a performance of *Accidental Death of an Anarchist* by Dario Fo, translated by Ed Emery. Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Performance: Directing.

Dario Fo's *Accidental Death of an Anarchist* is a 1970 political satire that concerns the accidental (or not) death of a supposed anarchist rail worker who fell (or was pushed) to his death from a fourth-story window of the police headquarters in Milan. It is based on the 1969 Piazza Fontana bombing and the real-life defenestration of a man during police interrogation. The play itself is a fictionalized version of the aftermath, following the officers responsible as they attempt to rewrite the truth of the event, all while being egged on by a Maniac with a penchant for disguises and making clowns out of cops.

Join experimental duo The Living Earth Show alongside pioneering composer, performer, and interdisciplinary artist Pamela Z for a moderated conversation and Q&A discussing their new work, process, and collaboration while in residence with the U-M Center for World Performance Studies.

ABOUT THE GUEST ARTISTS

PAMELA Z is a composer/performer and media artist making works for voice, electronics, samples, gesture activated MIDI controllers, and video. She has toured throughout the US, Europe, and Japan. Her work has been presented at venues and exhibitions including Bang on a Can (NY), the Japan Interlink Festival, Other Minds (SF), and the Venice Biennale, and the Dakar Biennale. She has composed scores for dance, film, and chamber ensembles (including Kronos Quartet and Eighth Blackbird). Her awards include the Rome Prize, Foundation for Contemporary Arts, MIT McDermott Award, the Guggenheim, American Academy of Arts and Letters, and Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. www.pamelaz.com

THE LIVING EARTH SHOW pushes the boundaries of technical and artistic possibility while amplifying voices, perspectives, and bodies that the classical music tradition has often excluded. The organization uses the tools of experimental and contemporary chamber music to foreground BIPOC and LGBTQ+ artists, facilitating the creation of their most ambitious musical visions and creating work that reflects and responds to our world.

Based in San Francisco, The Living Earth Show is simultaneously one of the premiere contemporary chamber ensembles in the United States, a groundbreaking production company (TLES Productions), and uncompromising record label (Earthy Records). The Living Earth Show has presented seasons of commissioned multimedia productions since 2011, working with dance companies, visual artists, sculptors, poets, and other musicians to craft compelling, immersive, progressive new work.
