Kenneth Kiesler, conductor

The University Symphony Orchestra presents the world premiere of Tales: A Folklore Symphony by Carlos Simon, U-M alumnus, now Resident Composer of the Kennedy Center. The 25-minute, four-movement work is the second piece of the project conceived and launched by Music Director Kenneth Kiesler in spring of 2020 which aims to commission a new orchestral work by a Black composer annually for a minimum of ten years.

The concert opens with Voices Shouting Out, an affirmative and optimistic work by Nkeiru Okoye. Okoye recalls sitting down to write music in the wake of 9/11, "I originally attempted to write Voices Crying Out, I could not…In the end, rather than “crying out,” my official response was Voices Shouting Out in freedom as it were, through the music. It was a march to acknowledge those fighting on behalf of our safety, and yet a sparkling celebration of life for those of us who continue living;."

When William Dawson earned his master’s degree at the American Conservatory, he and other Black students were not allowed to come to the stage to receive their degrees. When his Negro Folk Symphony was premiered by the Philadelphia Orchestra at Carnegie Hall in 1934, an outburst of applause followed the second movement, and thunderous applause called him back to the stage for multiple bows, and it received rave reviews from critics; a rare event for new music of the day. Dawson revised the Symphony in 1952 after a trip to West Africa.

The University Symphony Orchestra presents "Songs of the Ice, music from Scandinavia.” The concert opens with the American Premiere of Songs of the Ice by the young Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen. She has said, “I see music as a force of nature that can flood over a person and even change entire destinies,” and “I have a fundamental longing for the northernmost regions, within me.” The concert continues with the dramatic Violin Concerto by Sibelius, featuring violinist Arianna Dotto, Winner of the 2020 SMTD Concerto Competition, and the Fourth Symphony (The Inextinguishable) by Danish composer Karl Nielsen. With brilliant and stark orchestral colors and a unique and powerful voice, Nielsen’s Fourth expresses humankind’s struggle to survive against adversity and violence, and his conviction that human spirit is inextinguishable.

This USO concert features Benjamin Penzner, Winner of the 2020 SMTD Concerto Competition, playing the Viola Concerto by William, Walton. Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage opens this USO concert which ends with the "Four Sea Interludes" from the opera Peter Grimes by British composer Benjamin Britten. Highly regarded by his contemporary countrymen Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Holst, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was a super star of his time. In 1902 a group of Black Americans founded the Coleridge-Taylor society and arranged for three tours to America. In 1904, President Theodore Roosevelt feted him at the White House (at the time, a rare occurrence for a Black artist) and New York City held a parade in his honor. He included African music and American spirituals in his music. Symphonic Variations on an African Air is based on the spiritual “I’m Troubled in Mind.”

Kenneth Kiesler and Eugene Rogers, conductors

Acclaimed composer and U-M alumnus James Lee III was offered the inaugural commission of a ten-year commissioning project launched in 2020 by USO music director Kenneth Kiesler and SMTD aimed at diversifying the orchestral repertoire. Tethered Voices, a powerful and impactful piece for narrator and orchestra, is a setting of a striking poem by conductor and poet Kalena Bovell. While the USO recorded Tethered Voices during separate recording sessions with each orchestra section in September of 2020, this will be its first live-concert performance. Director of University Choirs Eugene Rogers leads the premiere of Damien Geter’s Justice Symphony for choir and orchestra, a work that centers on anthems of the civil rights era. It was commissioned by the University of Michigan and the Washington Chorus. The USO, joined by University Chamber Choir, University Choir, Orpheus Singers and vocal soloists, brings the 2021-2022 season to an exhilarating and affirmative conclusion with Mahler’s magnificent and inspiring Resurrection Symphony.

Big Ticket is proud to present Pink Sweat$!

Pink Sweat$ is an artist/songwriter/producer from Philadelphia, PA. Pink's music is rooted in R&B and Soul, stripping back the typical genre-specific production to showcase melodic intricacy and lyrical prowess. He began making music at the age of 19 as a demo vocalist, and soon after found himself working at the legendary Sigma Sounds Studios where he began his career as a songwriter. After 7 years of working behind the scenes, Pink Sweat$ launched as a solo artist in July of 2018. The rapid rise of his debut EP Volume 1 has earned him recognition from the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Fader.

Considered to be the father of the lithium-ion battery, 2019 Nobel laureate in Chemistry Stanley Whittingham will present "Overcoming Climate Change: The Critical Role and Challenges of Energy Storage" at 4:30 p.m. in Hill Auditorium. The event is free, open to the public and suitable for a broad audience. Note: Due to the popularity of this event, it is advised to arrive early to facilitate timely seating.

Abstract:
If North America is going to slow down climate change, it is essential that it goes to a clean sustainable energy economy. As many of the renewable energy sources such as solar and wind are intermittent it is necessary to store the energy for periods of generation outage. In addition, a clean transportation fleet requires majority conversion to electric vehicles particularly in urban areas. Lithium batteries are the dominant portable option, but they have a number of challenges in providing sustainable low cost transportation for most of us. After a description of the history of lithium batteries, I will describe some of the challenges and the resulting opportunities for all of us that will lead to a cleaner environment for our children and grandchildren.

Wynton Marsalis’s massive jazz symphony All Rise (Symphony No. 1) was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic for the millennium and had its world premiere in December 1999. Blending influences from African chant, New Orleans parade music, gospel, symphonic modernism, and Latin-based music, All Rise is a 12-movement arc built on the structure of the Blues that moves from uplifting and energetic to dark and distressing to Marsalis’s vision of the “togetherness and ascendance” of humanity. Marsalis has said that this monumental work is about “the rise from destruction to creativity, drawing joy out of tragedy, and refusing to be beaten down.” Of the world premiere performance, the Chicago Tribune enthused, “Marsalis finds plangent blues melody at [the] core…This is what makes All Rise cohere even though its 12 movements span entire continents and musical cultures.”
