Location: Hill Auditorium
Organized By: School of Music, Theatre & Dance

Wynton Marsalis’s massive jazz symphony All Rise (Symphony No. 1) was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic for the millennium and had its world premiere in December 1999. Blending influences from African chant, New Orleans parade music, gospel, symphonic modernism, and Latin-based music, All Rise is a 12-movement arc built on the structure of the Blues that moves from uplifting and energetic to dark and distressing to Marsalis’s vision of the “togetherness and ascendance” of humanity. Marsalis has said that this monumental work is about “the rise from destruction to creativity, drawing joy out of tragedy, and refusing to be beaten down.” Of the world premiere performance, the Chicago Tribune enthused, “Marsalis finds plangent blues melody at [the] core…This is what makes All Rise cohere even though its 12 movements span entire continents and musical cultures.”

Get ready to Find Your Folk! The 46th annual Ann Arbor Folk Festival returns live in a slightly modified format after a two-year hiatus. Saturday night, January 28, will take place as usual in beautiful Hill Auditorium with a lineup you won’t want to miss. Friday, January 27 we’ve cooked up something on a smaller scale: an intimate, in-the-round evening at home in the 400-seat Ark!

The festival is the largest annual fundraiser for The Ark, Ann Arbor’s non-profit home for folk, roots, and ethnic music. Presented by The Ark and Bank of Ann Arbor, the 2023 Folk Fest brings two nights of music in two beloved venues. The festival delivers the full spectrum of “Ark music,” presenting a taste of what’s happening on the leading edge of acoustic music while delving into the very heart of folk and roots traditions.

The University Symphony Orchestra performs the great Third Symphony of Brahms, whose melodies have found their way into popular culture through dozens of movies and songs. The program also includes Ravel’s La Valse, the colorful and revolutionary orchestral showpiece originally conceived as a ballet, and Charlotte Mecklenburg by Nkeiru Okoye, American composer of Nigerian descent. Written to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the city of Charlotte, NC. Premiered in 2018, the work quotes a variety of music to trace its history, including a hymn tune, a spiritual and jazz. The title comes from the city’s namesake Queen who likely had mixed-race heritage. The composition’s title relates to Okoye’s other music, which includes pieces about Phillis Wheatley and Harriet Tubman. She has said, “I crafted together my reflections and additional research using various melodic elements from original and folk sources, well-known and obscure. With a gentle nod to Aaron Copland, and the early 20th century call for more “American” music, the composition weaves a tapestry of the city and its history.”

Program:
Brahms, Symphony No. 3
Nkeiru Okoye, Charlotte Mecklenberg
Ravel, La Valse

The University Symphony Orchestra, conducted by its music director, Kenneth Kiesler, performs one of the most beloved works in the repertoire for orchestra, the Second Symphony by Finnish composer, Jan Sibelius.
The program also features percussion soloist James Koo, Winner of the 2023 SMTD Concerto Competition, playing the virtuosic and colorful Percussion Concerto by Chen Yi. The first woman in China to receive a master’s degree in composition, Chen Yi received her doctoral degree at Columbia University and joined the faculty of the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1998. The following year she became a United States citizen, and, in 2001 she received the American Academy of Arts and Letters Charles Ives Living, a cash grant awarded with the sole requirement of full-time composing. She has written major works for the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. The concert opens with an evocative out-take from the opera Nixon in China, The Chairman Dances, subtitled a Foxtrot for Orchestra, by American composer John Adams. The word “Dances” in the title is a verb, not a noun. The music depicts Madame Mao “crashing” a presidential banquet, hanging paper lanterns, and performing a dance; Chairman Mao Zedong descends from his portrait, and the two dance a foxtrot, going back in time together.

Location: Hill Auditorium
Organized By: University Musical Society (UMS)

The UMS Choral Union invites you to take part in the return of Summer Sings. Just come as you are to this no-audition, no-performance evening of memorable music-making!

As many as 250 singers from southeastern Michigan, northern Ohio, and Canada have joined each session in singing through great choral repertoire with some of the nation’s most respected choral conductors and outstanding soloists.

This year, Summer Sings returns to join the community together over a rhythmic masterpiece, Carmina Burana.

You probably know the first five chords of Carl Orff’s legendary Carmina Burana as you’ve likely heard these notes in many forms of popular entertainment, though you may not have heard the story of what inspired them: the scandalous writings of some mischievous monks and a revolutionary composer who turned those musings into music.

UMS’s Choral Union Music Director and Conductor Scott Hanoian prepares the Grammy Award-winning chorus in performances with the world’s finest orchestras and conductors and will help direct the evening of community engagement. Portions of the score will be rehearsed during the first half, followed by a break for refreshments, and then singers re-convene to sing through the entire work.

Please arrive early at 6:30 pm for registration.
