Between 1918 and 1921, over a hundred thousand Jews were murdered in Ukraine by peasants, townsmen, and soldiers who blamed the Jews for the turmoil of the Russian Revolution. In hundreds of separate incidents, ordinary people robbed their Jewish neighbors with impunity, burned down their houses, ripped apart their Torah scrolls, sexually assaulted them, and killed them. Largely forgotten today, these pogroms—ethnic riots—dominated headlines and international affairs in their time. Aid workers warned that six million Jews were in danger of complete extermination. Twenty years later, these dire predictions would come true.

Jeffrey Veidlinger is Joseph Brodsky Collegiate Professor of History and Judaic Studies at the University of Michigan. His books, which include *The Moscow State Yiddish Theater* and *In the Shadow of the Shtetl*, have won a National Jewish Book Award, the Barnard Hewitt Award for Theatre Scholarship, two Canadian Jewish Book Awards, and the J. I. Segal Award.

America's art tells America's story - the optimism, struggles, humor and pain. We'll explore how people from early inhabitants to today pictured the history and landscape of the country reflecting its ideas and ideals.

Images will range from realistic paintings of John Singleton Copley to modern abstractions by Jackson Pollock, from the innocent America captured by Norman Rockwell in his early work to the struggles of black Americans seen in his late paintings and those of black artists like Jacob Lawrence, and from inspiring views of unspoiled country by Thomas Cole to the lonely cities of Edward Hopper. These artists, and others whose work we'll see, help build our picture of America.

Wendy Evans was raised among the museums of London, England. She has advanced degrees from Oxford University in England and Wayne State University in Detroit, taught Art History at Wayne State University and CCS, and is a long-time volunteer at the Detroit Institute of Arts. She gives Zoom presentations on a wide variety of art subjects. More information about Wendy is on her website www.art-talks.org

Preregistration is required via the OLLI website or phone. A link to access the lecture will be e-mailed prior to the event.

Conversation and Q&A with UMMA Associate Curator of Photography Jennifer Friess

Join us for a virtual presentation on Wednesday, December 8 at 5:30 p.m. EST, as we take a deep-dive into the new, dynamic reinstallation of the Museum’s historic Apse, You Are Here. This special exhibition, curated by UMMA Associate Curator of Photography, Jennifer Friess, celebrates our return to the Museum and opportunities to experience art in person. The works of You Are Here were selected for their ability to evoke feelings of what it means to be truly present upon our return to UMMA.

During this one-hour event, Friess will take a closer look at a few pieces from the exhibition and discuss how each of these works remind visitors to be present where they are: to look and feel and be at UMMA, in person at the Museum. Guests will have an opportunity to join the discussion through a Q&A.

This program will be hosted on Zoom. Please register here to reserve your spot.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch and the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.

At 7:15 join a pre-concert lecture and the 8:00PM performance by Concert Band and special guests, “Let Woman Choose Her Sphere.” This concert utilizes the centenary of the ratification of the 19th amendment as an opportunity to showcase the broader fight for equality throughout this country’s history to the present day. It is well known that only white women gained the right to vote in 1920, and the fight for truly universal suffrage continued in earnest for decades. But suffrage alone is not enough, and the fight for equality in all areas of public and private life continues. We celebrate the voices of those who have stood up and spoken out for rights in America. From Jane Adams to Janet Mock, this event is for ALL.

Free & open to the public.

Dan Weiss and Miles Okazaki have been partners in rhythm for 20 years. Having previously appeared together on seven albums (three by Okazaki and four by Weiss), they put forth their first duo record, MUSIC FOR DRUMS AND GUITAR, in October 2021. In the duet setting, Weiss and Okazaki are able to explore extreme rhythmic territory and freely construct flowing improvised sets.

Dan Weiss is consistently recognized as a top drummer in publications such as the New York Times ("Five Drummers Whose Time is Now"), Modern Drummer ("Top 5 Jazz Drummers"), and Downbeat magazine ("Top Up and Coming Percussionist"), and has been a member of many of the most influential groups on the current scene including Dave Binney, Rudresh Mahanthappa, Matt Mitchell, and Chris Potter. He is also an accomplished tabla player, having performed with Ashish Khan and Ramesh Misra and studied with Samir Chatterjee for two decades.

Miles Okazaki is known for his rhythmic approach to the guitar, is currently in groups led by Jonathan Finlayson, Matt Mitchell, Amir El Saffar, and gained wide recognition in recent years as the guitarist for Steve Coleman and Five Elements. The New York Times recently described his style as "utterly contemporary, free from the expectations of what it means to play a guitar in a group setting — not just in jazz, but any kind."

Over the last decade, New England native Stephen Kellogg has performed more than 2,000 concerts around the world, raised thousands of dollars for causes close to his heart, been named Armed Forces Entertainer of the Year, and penned singles for artists like platinum selling rock band O.A.R and American Idol winner Nick Fradiani. Stephen’s most recent writing work with legendary guitarist Robert Randolph, led to a Grammy nomination for “Best Contemporary Blues Record.” He’s also had his songs covered by international major label acts and released ten studio albums of his own yielding hundreds of thousands of ticket and record sales.

A father of four and married to his high school sweetheart, filmmaker Peter Harding was so moved by the everyman nature of Kellogg’s story that he made a documentary called “Last Man Standing” which went on to become an Amazon exclusive film. In recent years, Kellogg has added authorship and speaking to his resume as well. He delivered a TEDx Talk on job satisfaction, the keynote speech for the prestigious photography summit WRKSHP, and was invited to speak to the students at Columbine High School in Littleton, CO on the topics of social justice and ‘finding your voice.’ He has appeared as a contributing author in several publications and in 2020, will be publishing his first full length book-a collection of essays called, “Objects in the Mirror: Thoughts on a Perfect Life from an Imperfect Person.”

While Stephen Kellogg may have remained underneath the radar for some in the mainstream, he has succeeded in building a meaningful career alongside many of the best in the business. He’s sung duets with Sara Bareilles, Josh Ritter, Rosanne Cash, and Pat Monahan of Train and participated in the 2018 “Garden Of Dreams’ concert at the Beacon Theater. His music has found its way onto the Billboard charts and been featured in numerous films and TV shows. Whether performing solo or with a band, Kellogg’s soul and energy fuel one of the most dynamic shows anywhere. “With beautifully written songs and an engaging personality”, The Michigan Daily reports, “Kellogg appears as if he was born on stage, taking the spotlight and using it to his advantage, but never letting go of his connection with the audience.” A master storyteller in his prime, he will spend much of 2020 where he’s always been at home…the road.

Considering Matthew Shepard (December 9, 2021 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/88638 88638-21656327@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, December 9, 2021 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Presented in partnership with the U-M Museum of Art (UMMA), Considering Matthew Shepard is an evocative and compassionate musical response to the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998, one of America’s most notorious anti-gay hate crimes. Shepard’s tragic death ultimately led to the creation of the Matthew Shepard Foundation and provided a catalyst for legislation that expanded the definition of a hate crime to include sexual orientation. In 2009, Congress passed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Composer Craig Hella Johnson had a profoundly personal reaction to both the murder and its resonance. The Shepard family and Foundation engaged with Johnson to create the Grammy-nominated oratorio, Considering Matthew Shepard, which draws from fragments of Shepard’s personal diary.
In November 2021, the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance and UMMA created a live performance film of the U-M Chamber Choir performing the oratorio under the direction of award winning conductor Eugene Rogers, acclaimed stage director Matt Kunkel, and Emmy-award winning film producer Bob Berg, with pianist Scott VanOrnum, production designer Harrison Hoffert, and narrated by Priscilla Lindsay. The live performance was presented as part of the UMMA exhibition Oh honey...A queer reading of the collection and the 50th anniversary of the U-M Spectrum Center.
This Penny Stamps Speaker Series event offers a public screening of the performance film, followed by a conversation with Rogers and Johnson about the work.

Considering Matthew Shepard is an evocative and compassionate musical response to the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard in 1998, one of America’s most notorious anti-gay hate crimes.

In November 2021, the U‑M School of Music, Theatre & Dance and UMMA created a live performance film of the U‑M Chamber Choir performing the oratorio under the direction of award winning conductor Eugene Rogers, acclaimed stage director Matt Kunkel, and Emmy-award winning film producer Bob Berg, with pianist Scott VanOrnum, production designer Harrison Hoffert, and narrated by Priscilla Lindsay. The live performance was presented as part of the UMMA exhibition Oh honey…A queer reading of the collection and the 50th anniversary of the U‑M Spectrum Center.

This Penny Stamps Speaker Series event offers a public screening of the performance film, followed by a conversation with Rogers and Johnson about the work.

Detroit Public Television will also screen the film on Saturday, December 11, at 4:30 p.m. Visit www.dptv.org for more information.
