We'd like to invite you to a new event series this semester, the Queer World Conversations! These will be weekly discussions on a variety of topics, but all of them will be discussed with a queer lens. We'll bring the topic, you bring the discussion! Everyone is welcome to join the Conversations, and the voices of those most impacted by the week's topic will be prioritized.

Topics will be announced the week before on our social medias and on the event pages. Registration is not required, nor is consistent attendance. Come when you want, bring your friends, and let's have a Conversation!

Upcoming topics:
4/12/23 - Weight Inclusivity

There are a lot of social ideas of what someone's body "should" look like, especially when it comes to weight. Body positivity is more visible than ever, but so is fatphobia. With the help of our friends of the School of Public Health's Weight Inclusive Initiative, we'll dive into the ways that queer bodies and queer cultures interact with and complicate the already complex ideas we have around one's weight. Are queer people held to a higher standard than non-queer folks? Do we hold each other to higher standards within our own community? Are there any major connections between fatphobia and gender dysphoria?

Spectrum Center Event Accessibility Statement:

Climate Solutions: Renewable Energy Storage and Carbon Capture
January 25, 2023 - *Tonight's Science Café has been cancelled due to inclement weather and has been rescheduled for March 22.*
5:30 p.m.- 7:30 p.m.
Conor O'Neill's Traditional Irish Pub, 318 South Main Street, Ann Arbor

How can renewables such as wind and solar energy produce power for use when the sun isn't shining or the wind ebbs? How can we capture the carbon dioxide that is already in the atmosphere? Join Charles McCrory of the U-M Department of Chemistry and David Kwabi of the U-M Department of Mechanical Engineering to discuss new research on renewable energy storage: using renewable electricity to charge batteries and produce chemical fuels like hydrogen that can be used for later energy generation. We'll also discuss how renewable energy may be used to mitigate climate change by capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide, or converting it into useful products.

Science Cafés provide an opportunity for audiences to discuss current research topics with experts in an informal setting.

Complimentary hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 p.m.
The program begins at 6:00 p.m.
Seating is limited—come early.

UMMNH would like to thank Conor O’Neill’s for 15 years of support for our Science Cafés. Their continued commitment brings U-M faculty into the Ann Arbor community to discuss current research topics.

Tania El Khoury - Penny Stamps Speaker Series (January 26, 2023 5:30pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/102232 102232-21803705@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 26, 2023 5:30pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Penny W Stamps School of Art & Design

Lebanese artist Tania El Khoury examines the universal, never-ending story of migration through a family diary of the borders, and the recognition that the cruelest of borders are invisible to the eye and present in everyday life.
Cultural Exchange Rate is an interactive live art project in which El Khoury shares her family memoirs of life in border villages between Lebanon and Syria. El Khoury collects recorded interviews with her late grandmother, the discovery of lost relatives in México City, and the family’s attempt to secure dual citizenship through war survival, valueless currency collection, and a river that disregards both colonial and national borders. The audience is invited to immerse their heads into one family’s secret boxes to explore sounds, images, and textures that trace more than a century of border crossings.
Tania El Khoury is a live artist whose work focuses on audience interactivity and its political potential. She creates installations and performances in which the audience is a witness and an active collaborator. Tania’s work has been translated to multiple languages and shown in 32 countries across 6 continents in spaces ranging from museums to cable cars. She is the recipient of a Soros Art Fellowship, the Bessies Outstanding Production Award, the International Live Art Prize, the Total Theatre Innovation Award, and the Arches Brick Award.
El Khoury is the director of the OSUN Center for Human Rights & the Arts at Bard College in New York. She holds a PhD from Royal Holloway, University of London. She is associated with Forest Fringe collective of artists in the UK and is a co-founder of Dictaphone Group in Lebanon, a research and live art collective aiming at questioning our relationship to the city and its public spaces. Tania El Khoury’s previous work, As Far As My Fingertips Take Me was part of No Safety Net 2.0 in early 2020.
This event will be an interview conducted by Tom Sellar, a writer, editor, dramaturg and curator, editor of Yale’s international journal Theater, and professor in the Practice of Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism at Yale. Sellar’s arts writing and criticism has appeared in national publications including Artforum, BOMB, the New York Times, the Guardian, 4Columns, TheatreForum, and American Theatre. He has served as dramaturg for more than 25 productions at theaters including the Joseph Papp Public Theater/New York Shakespeare Festival, Center Stage (Baltimore), PS 122, Yale Repertory Theatre, Yale School of Drama, and the Ontological-Hysteric Theater, among others. Sellar co-edited “Where No Wall Remains,” a special edition of Theater on borders and performance, with Tania El Khoury in 2021.

Organized By: Bentley Historical Library

What does it mean that U-M's first president, Henry Philip Tappan, wanted to turn Michigan into a "true university"?  How has student activism remade Michigan over the decades?  How did one of the nation's most prestigious student literary awards come to U-M?  What does it mean to be a leader and best -- on the playing field or in the laboratory?  And, how should you depict U-M's history?  For its 2017 bicentennial, the University of Michigan collaborated with Detroit Public Television to produce ten mini-documentaries covering questions such as these from U-M's history.  What do those videos look like six years later, given so many changes in the University and the world? For this movie night, we will screen several videos from the series, and our panel will discuss those videos and the series as a whole.  The panel will consist of Fran Blouin and Kim Clarke, who both appeared in many of the videos, and Gary Krenz, who directed the University's bicentennial.

As with all public events at the Observatory, this movie night will include tours of the building by our student docents, with observing if weather permits.

Neal Francis with Danielle Ponder (January 26, 2023 8:00pm) https://events.umich.edu/event/100737 100737-21800300@events.umich.edu Event Begins: Thursday, January 26, 2023 8:00pm
Location: Off Campus Location
Organized By: Michigan Union Ticket Office (MUTO)

On his new album, “In Plain Sight,” Neal Francis offers up a body of work both strangely enchanted and painfully self-aware, unfolding in songs sparked from Greek myths and frenzied dreams and late-night drives in the depths of summer delirium. True to its charmed complexity, the singer/songwriter/pianist’s second full-length came to life over the course of a tumultuous year spent living in a possibly haunted church in Chicago. The result: a portrait of profound upheaval and weary resilience, presented in a kaleidoscopic sound that’s endlessly absorbing.

Bravery can take many forms. For Danielle Ponder it took the shape of a leap of faith: leaving her successful day job working in the public defender’s office in her hometown of Rochester (New York) to devote herself full-time to sharing her powerful voice with the world. The singer-songwriter’s mesmerizing eight-song debut, “Some of Us Are Brave,” reinforces that her faith was not misplaced, and her leap has been rewarded with a safe landing. Written and recorded over three years, the album is a refreshingly original, shiver-inducing mix of pop, R&B, blues, rock, and moody trip-hop topped by Danielle’s celestial voice— an instrument that can plumb melancholy depths with a heartsick murmur and scrape the sky with hurricane force wails.

*Kalinindorf,* Yurii Kaparulin and Les Kasyanov, directors (29 min, 2020). Following the film screening, Kaparulin will lead the discussion.

The documentary film tells the story of Kalynivske, a village in the Kherson region. Between 1927 and 1944, the village–then known as Kalinindorf–was the center of the first Jewish oblast in Ukraine. Through their encounters with the inhabitants of Kalynivske and of several other former Jewish settlements, the film directors explore the common history of Ukrainian and Jews, complex Ukrainian-Jewish relations, and the Holocaust, and investigate how that layered history is remembered today. The story of Kalynivske and Jewish settlements in the region takes on new meaning following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24th, 2022, as the region was occupied by Russian troops and then annexed to the Russian Federation. After their liberation by the Armed Forces of Ukraine on November 9, 2022, war crimes committed by the Russian army are being discovered and investigated, providing the occasion to revisit the history of violence in the region.

Les Kasyanov is a photographer and filmmaker who has been working with the French historical organization Yahad—In Unum since 2011 collecting evidence of the Holocaust. Les was responsible for principal photography, sound, and editing.

Yurii Kaparulin, associate professor and director of the Raphael Lemkin Center for Genocide Studies at Kherson State University, is a legal scholar and Scholars at Risk Fellow at the University of Michigan Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia. He has been researching the history of Jewish agricultural settlements in southern Ukraine for the past five years. Prof. Kaparulin researched and produced the film.
