The campus and Ann Arbor communities are invited to join us for a public lecture and book signing! Public health doctor and activist Dr. Abdul El-Sayed is returning to his alma mater for a special event with the LSA Honors Program, where Dr. El-Sayed will serve as the Fall 2020 DeRoy Professor. El-Sayed who began his undergraduate career with the LSA Honors Program, was the 2008 U-M Commencement student speaker and a 2009 Rhodes Scholar, among other notable achievements.

His forthcoming book, "Healing Politics: A Doctor’s Journey into Heart of our Political Epidemic," diagnoses our country’s “epidemic of insecurity” and the empathy policy we’ll need to treat it.

“Healing Politics is a token of appreciation for this state and its people, who taught me so much over the past several years. I hope it captures the challenges we face—and the hope I’ve seen in the least likely places,” said El-Sayed. “These are the insights I hope to bring to the classroom as the DeRoy Professor at the LSA Honors Program next fall. I’m excited to be back on campus, where, in many ways, the intellectual roots of this book took shape when I was a student.”

The LSA Honors DeRoy Visiting Professorship was endowed by the Helen L. DeRoy Foundation in 1981 to make it possible for students to study with distinguished persons in business, government, labor, law, and various scholarly disciplines. Former DeRoy Professors include poet and critic Carmen Bugan and French economist Jacques Mistral.

This event is hosted in partnership with U-M LSA Honors Program; Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships; The Phi Beta Kappa Society, Alpha of Michigan Chapter; School for Environment and Sustainability; Ford School of Public Policy; School of Public Health; School of Social Work.

Due to COVID-19, we regretfully cancel this year's Honors Commencement Ceremony. We will acknowledge the Class of 2020 with a special mailing, which will include graduation certificates, covers, cords, and other items. At this time, we are collecting photos and memories for a virtual Honors Yearbook (which will be available for self-printing). All seniors should have received an email from Director Mika LaVaque-Manty with information about how to contribute to this collection. We will sincerely miss this event, one of the proudest moments of our academic year. We celebrate all senior thesis and undergraduate efforts! Go Blue!

Excerpted from a letter from Dean Curzan:
"[Friday, 6/19] is Juneteenth, and I want to echo Rob Sellers’ invitation to our entire community to commemorate the holiday in some fashion. The celebration of Juneteenth has a long history in the Black community. In addition to commemorating the end of slavery in America, it honors the strength, perseverance, and legacy of the generations of enslaved African American ancestors who played a central role in building this country and survived the cruelties of slavery. Juneteenth Celebration Day is now officially recognized in Michigan, as well as 46 other states and D.C., and yesterday Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist II underscored that the day “is an important reminder of the work that must continue to be done to deliver equity and opportunity to every community.”

"I would like to invite you to join us, as part of our college-wide anti-racism efforts, in an extended exploration of Bryan Stevenson’s transformational work challenging racial discrimination in the criminal justice system and catalyzing conversations about the legacy of slavery in the United States. We will soon be sharing details about events this summer and fall. If you want to get started now, I encourage you to watch Bryan Stevenson’s TED Talk (“We Need to Talk About an Injustice”|
https://www.ted.com/talks/bryan_stevenson_we_need_to_talk_about_an_injustice?language=en) or the movie, Just Mercy (available for free on many digital platforms right now|https://www.justmercyfilm.com/), which is based on Stevenson’s representation of Walter McMillian, who was convicted and sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit."

In 1970, as Michigan prepared to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the admission of women, women faculty at U.S. colleges were exempted from the protections of the major civil rights laws and the U-M admissions office was enforcing a 55:45 quota on male-female admissions to ensure that there would not be an “overbalance” of women in the freshman class. But a small group of Ann Arbor women developed a strategy to unleash the power of the federal government to demand change at U-M by threatening to withhold millions of dollars in federal contracts. The settlement provided the model for resolving similar complaints at dozens of other universities in the years immediately before the passage of Title IX. Sara Fitzgerald, then an Honors history major, covered the controversy for The Michigan Daily, and a half-century later, reflects on how that time on campus shaped her own career aspirations and writing interests.

Author of "Conquering Heroines", and Honors alumna, Sara Fitzgerald is a former editor and new-media developer for the Washington Post and was the first woman to serve as editor-in-chief of the Michigan Daily. She is the author of Elly Peterson: “Mother” of the Moderates (University of Michigan Press, 2012) and The Poet’s Girl (Thought Catalog Books, 2020).
